    There's a video on here of a guy "wet" forming a sheath with pure beeswax, melted in a crock pot. Drop it in and sorta let it soak until it quits bubbling. Wrap the knife if you want, totally not necessary because its beeswax and while its hot, form the knife to the sheath. You can then burnish and wipe off excess wax, BOOM. IF it starts to get too cool you can warm it in a low temp toaster oven and hand work it till its right for you. Now the sheath is completely water resistant and of course, melted beeswax can't hurt your tools, no water😂

  • @longrider42
    @longrider42 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    If you ever "Wet Form" another knife sheath. Instead of soaking the sheath in water. Give it a heavy coat of Boiled Linseed Oil. Let the oil soak in a bit, then slide the knife in. You don't need to worry about the knife rusting. Its how I've done many a sheath. Plus the sheath is now water proofed. I'm looking at getting the BPS Savage. I don't need another Ferro rod. The reason its a tad loose, is due to the plastic you had wrapped around the knife.

      @@940joey2 Hello Joey , just a wee word of caution when using Linseed oil, boiled or raw, just be carefull disposing of any rags or cotton waste used to mop up or apply any linseed oil. It can spontaneously combust. I put any waste into a old bucket and use it to help light my wood burning stove.

    There are a couple of things I've found with wet forming that might help you. I've dabbled with making axe masks and knife sheaths but I'm no expert, probably just a few lessons ahead of you, so hopefully the advice is pertinent, relevant and achievable with the kit you have.
    1. Finding a way to stretch and hold the shape you want whilst it dries is a must. Think clips or the like (with scraps for padding, you don't want to mark the sheath) for the holding but for the stretching you really need to push and force the leather into the shape you want with a smoothing tool. It needs to be absolutely tight to shape, far tighter than you think you want it, and then you need to try to keep it that way for drying. A smoothing tool is anything hard, smooth and pointed enough you can really push the leather in to shape with that doesn't actually cut or mark the leather whilst you do it. I use the end of a butterknife handle, it's pointy enough to get into corners but is so rounded it doesn't damage the workpiece. They almost certainly sell tools for the job, I'm sure you can find something perfectly acceptable in your house for free though.
    2. Drying. The quicker you can dry it the better. I don't think the drying speed really matters as far as the leather is concerned but the less time it has to relax and move the better. A very low oven is brilliant and really easy for a knife (try it with a felling axe...) but even a fan on a sunny window cill will really speed things up. You want to end up with a hard leather that holds its shape, something you can rap your knuckles on. You'll lose some of that rigidity if you treat the leather, but try not to soften it entirely with waterproofing waxes or oils.
    I've never managed to shape and dry a sheath so quickly and well that I couldn't get the knife or axe out, so these days I actively try to make it so tight I can't and dry it quickly enough to keep it that way. That way I figure that if I'm 90% of the way there I've got a really tight fit that will wear in nicely with renaissance wax and use.
    Hope that helps, and as with all things like this: practice and experience are better teachers than most (me very much included).

    Leather supply stores use a sponge or spritz sprayer to soften the leather. I have done several several and they were tight. Good advive do not jam the knife in, but leave some snuggle room as the leather will give too much and stop on the welt . Nice bluing bro!

    I don't think I would have squeezed a leather around the knife. We all learn from previous attempts, I'm sure. I would have just sunbaked it... maybe be anxious and try the knife every 24 hours or less? However, I do share the exuberance about the Biew Bladed Beauty! By the way I wanted this knife also but because it is going to stick in the target when you throw it properly! Another guy on a knife channel has well demonstrated it.🤗 I'll share more because it's the kind of knife I originally wanted but I had already found four different ones first A Pakistani Damascus 12" and some Viking 10" looking one with perhaps 60 visible indentations on the front blade but it is quite sweet. But I really like carbon steel and it wouldn't surprise me if the Adventurer would have been my first, last and only. You have an awesome near custom thrower and you've done ezcellent work!

    I have a simple solution for you, a peace of shock cord on the back of the knife that you can rap around the leather of the rod holder.
    I use this with my Bench-made puukka knife because it has a plastic sleeve in the leather sheath and falls out easily, now with the shock cord it holds it in great.
    Your knife turned out great and if you had used a foam block forming press ( same one used with Kydex I think your result would have been better) .

    Thanks for the vid, knife turned out great👍. Wet forming can be a pain. Sometimes just the thickness of the plastic wrap can be enough to stop a really tight fit. Leather thickness can affect it too. Using a smooth pointer or stick to work into corners can help. If it loosens over time I'll usually add a bit of water, oil or dubbin (whichever I have handy) into the corners and rework it through. The vac seal, and beeswax methods sound pretty cool too

    I usually run warm water into the sheath for about 20 - 30 seconds. Then form with my fingers and a burnishing tool of some kind. (antler tine, wooden tool handle etc) let it dry for about an hour, remove the knife, then bake it in the oven for about 20 -30 minutes at 170 degrees.

    I use hot wax often after the initial wet forming.
    PRACTICE on a piece you do not care about first ! It WILL darken quite a lot.
    Anyhow, Use a heat gun on the leather to the point of just painful to touch. CATION, do not over heat the leather.
    Rub a chunk of wax (I use bees wax.) on the low points of any curves. This will give a nice shadowing to the piece.
    No harm and a uniform look to do this to the entire item.
    Using formfitting gloves or a smooth/rounded stick,etc. press the leather into the shape as one does during wet forming.
    Work it until it is cool. This will greatly improve holding the form and provides a lot of water resistance.
    Also look into carboili-(sp) wax boiled leather for armour hard, if you want that sort of thing.

      Awesome thank you so much for the advice !! I’ll definitely give that a try, I’m not worried about it being darker in fact I think a little darker will look cooler 👍 .. do you recommend 100% bees wax or do you think I can get away with wax you would use on an axe handle with bees wax in it

    I hear bluing is toxic for food prep, I wouldn't have done it I would just fold over some thin paper and cut it to the shape of the blade and fold it over the spine and saturate it with apple cider vinegar and let it patina for a few min then rinse it off, I would also put a layer of Super Lube under the scales to seal it and prevent rust, SL is non toxic. Thank you so much for the awesome tip, I’ll def have to try that on another knife. Yes bluing is definitely toxic and I wouldn’t do this to a knife if you plan on using it on food. I bought mine a few months ago. Nice knife. Great price. I ordered mine directly from their site. Took 3 wks which isn't bad at all.
    I've read reviews on amazon stating that the knife came rusty. It's a high carbon steel knife. Rust happens. Any rust upon delivery is just surface rust. Easy to remedy. Easy to prevent. However if you want one looking the way it did when it left the BPS shop in Ukrainia than I suggest you support them directly by ordering from them directly. I received mine rust free and looking mint. Nice and sharp as well.
    Not sure if it was mentioned in the video, I have the volume down while commenting, but I've heard it said that BPS supplies the Ukraine Troops with their knives. I think that speaks volumes in itself.

      @940joey2  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for watching !!! I too read the reviews, but I believe people are to harsh or never had a high carbon blade before be sue they act like it’s the end of the world. Surface rust on the blade will obviously not affect the performance. I decided to go with cold blueing to help prevent rust because I use my knife a lot and sometimes I put my knife back in the sheath wet or the sheath gets wet and leather obviously will hold moisture, so I figured it’s just a little extra protection. I’m so impressed with the quality of these knives !! I got my dad one for Christmas, he loves it and he stands by his vintage bucks knives. He was blown away on the quality and the fit and finish !! Great instructional video Joey. My limited experience in wet forming leather had a similar result...more contoured and form fitted to the knife shape but no better retention. I ended up glueing another layer of leather inside the throat of the sheath which worked well. I have also used a kitchen vacuum sealer which did an excellent job with the wet forming but didn't increase retention. Perhaps the leather guys will have some expert tips.

    • @jordanstevens8132
      @jordanstevens8132 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vacuum forming will be brilliant for shaping the leather but it isn't going to let it dry at all. An airtight seal literally will not let the piece dry out at all. It's the drying that holds the leather in the new shape, without a way to keep that tension in the workpiece which the vacuum creates it isn't going to remain that shape once you take it out to dry. It's a good idea (and genuinely perfect for step one of the process) but to get it to work for step two is probably harder than traditional wet forming with a shaper.

    It might be a good idea to coat the part of the knife under the scales with polyurethane to seal it from water just a light coat, then when the scales are reapplied put a light coat of poly on the wood

      Thank you so much for watching !!! If you do decide to pick this knife up I don’t think you’ll be disappointed !! I’ve had this knife now for almost 2 years now think more around a year and a half. This knife goes out with me every time I step into the woods, and I use this thing !! It hasn’t let me down yet and I don’t think it ever will. If I’m being completely honest I’ve probably used this knife a lot harder than intended just for the sake of “there’s no way a 40 dollar knife is this good” almost like I was looking for a reason for it to fail. Well I tell you what this knife took everything I threw at it and kept on chugging 👍. In fact I picked up a second one just Incase this one failed and I honestly haven’t even opened the box yet, it’s been months !! Yeah I totally agree throwing some liners on would be an awesome finishing touch. I have 2 more videos with this knife if you’re interested check them out. Thank you so much for watching and subscribing 🤙. I must apologize ahead of time, it’s been about 3 months since my last video. I normally post at least once a week, but I’ve been slammed with work even on the weekends. That being said I hope to get out in the woods with another video soon 👍

    Try vacuums forming the leather with a simple kitchen vacuums sealer. I might work but then there is no way to get the moisture out to properly dry.

      @940joey2  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much, that’s a great idea !! I’ll have to give that a shot. Since then what I did was I sewed in a strip of leather at the top to give some more retention around the handle.

    Great video and I really like how your knife turned out. I don't know much about wet forming leather but I wonder if adding 1mm liners between the handles and the knife would make it fit a bit more snug in the sheath? I find the handles on my Adventurer to be a bit on the slim side anyway.

    • @940joey2
      @940joey2  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much I really appreciate it !! Hey that’s a great ideal maybe I’ll try that out. I never thought to make the knife it self thicker at the handle, I guess I was more concerned with making the sheath smaller and totally over looked that !! And yeah you’re right the handle is a bit slim any how, it could only benefit from adding some liners or making thinker scales 👍

    I use vinegar, mustard, hot sauce, etc. to force a patina on my knives. I heard cold blue isn't the safest if you'll be using it to cut food. Not sure if it's true, but better safe than sorry.

      Thank you so much for watching. Ahh yes that seems to make sense and this was pre oiled from the factory and I’ve oiled it my self so you’re probably right saying that. When I assembled knives, I put 2 ton epoxy between the scales and tang then put the pins in and clamp down. That will give you extra insurance in case the bolts come loose when you are out using the knife.
    Also boiling leather strinks it. So if the sheath really bothers you, you can try that and if it's to small then apply oils to the leather and stretch it out with the knife in it.

    It was either Mr. Sears or Mr. Roebuck who said you never use the word "Cheap". It has a connotation of inferior quality. There is nothing "Cheap" about there knives. They are one of the best bushcraft knives on the market today. I have 13 of their knives. On the leather I have used saddle soap first, than later a few apps of mink oil.
