Used as a camp/kitchen knife it’s really great for the price. Personally I don’t use any of my knives as prybars or hang 45# of weight on the handle. I have other BPS kinives and other brands that have scandi grinds that are used for light wood kprocessing and other camp chores. Saws and small heavy machete type blades are used for the heavier wood work. It was interesting to see the knife pressed to its limits though.
Your detailed review helps others make informed choices. We're grateful for your support!
Totally good stuff 👍
I've had the Savage for about a year, and yes it is a great knife, either in the kitchen or the camp. I took the handle scales off of mine and then blued the whole knife with Bichwood Cassey Super Blue. Worked great, and the finish matches the sheath. As for the sheath. If you find it to be too tight. Soak it in Boiled Linseed Oil, then insert the knife and set it aside for about a week. When it dries it will be a a nice fit, not to tight, not too loose. Thats how I handled mine. Now the leather sheath is also water proof.
I own several BPS knives and I have the camp axe as well and all of them are great I recommend them all the time to people looking for a great budget knife that is well built.
It's a great camp kitchen knife and light duty camp chores type things. Just not a heavy duty knife you can beat the snot out of. For the price, it's a great value as long as you understand it's limitations. Good looking too.
I'm a fan of BPS Knives. I have 4 of them. Quality is great for the price
I looked at this model guessing about a year or so ago. It looked like a high value to cost ratio general purpose knife in that size range with a full flat grind. As far as BPS knives go I have and enjoy using their rendition of the Ray Mears design. I decided based on the specs regarding thickness of the Steel stock and Steel type against the purchase of this Skinner / Camp kitchen knife. I'm glad to see you review this as it was indicative of the very reasons I did not purchase it . I will relate the 1066 Steel patinas nicely. I'll also say that the BPS sheath is quite nice, especially at the asking prices
Great vid and great info. I actually picked up a BPS blade (the one that looks like a Mora) based on the recommendation from your old video. I’ve been very pleased with it. Thanks for keeping it real with us!
I agree they are great knives to customize. I cold blued one of them, did a vinegar patina on another. I put g10 liners under the wooden scales of all of them. If you don't mind touching up an edge fairly regularly, these are great to use.
I was a little disappointed with the fit and finish of the handle scales on the knife in the video. The liner idea could make this a much better budget buy.
@@MrGratefulEd plus, for me, the handle was a little thin. Adding the g10 helped my ergonomics.
Good to see something decently close to the OKC RAT 3/5 line in price to performance! Might have to pick one these up since it’s such a good deal
Thanks for your knife reviews!
Referring to your sandbag test... Mine had a warp like that in it maybe slightly less but very obvious from the factory. I love it gives it character
Had mine for about six months. Great around the camp slicing and dicing with the mustard patina I put on it. Beats the scandi grind for food prep. The leather sheath also works well as strop.
I have 1 BPS knife (Adventurer) , that I have had several years now. it will never replace my TOPS BoB, or other knives of that size, but it has been in use from time to time. often as the knife I let others use when they don't have a camp knife. they are well made for the price point, and the one I have has held up to light/moderate use over several trips to the woods.
I bought that same knife this year just for a field dressing/skinning knife, I used it on a deer and it held its edge better than I expected. I'm pretty sure I can use it on one more deer before touching up the edge. Hopefully I'll find out soon.
I saw this review and got one. Haven't really used it yet but it is very comfortable to hold and seems very well built for the money and yes as you said the sheath is amazing. For the money i dont see how you could regret owning this.
I have the Adventurer and love it. The scales on mine were perfectly flush with the tang. Looking at their other knives have to say I’m really impressed and may wind up with the whole collection. Taking into account the leather sheath, the full tang, the wood scales, and the firesteels that some of them come with, I think they are the best value in fixed blades. Yes, better than Mora.
I like the standardization of your tests. I look forward to seeing more knives subjected to the same.
Great vid. I have the version with black bog-oak scales. I have had this knife for over a year and enjoy using it as a food prep and camp knife. It simply isn't a survival or bushcraft knife as most define those terms. BPS has more robust and thicker scandi-grind knives that excel there.
I own the Savage as well the Bushcrafter and for the quality over price point it truly is a great knife
For that price you're basically getting a good quality/ high value leather dangler sheath that happens to come with a nice, "free" companion knife!
I have a few BPS knives. The adventurer The BST1 and BST2. They have held up well especially for the price. Im a fan.
Looks like the old Bill.Harsey designed Gerber Biig Rock which, although dismissed by some for being a Gerber, was a pretty good camp knife for $25.
I may get one eventually. I have 3 of their other knives. I do love carbon and flat grinds. Got 30 year old Green Rivers in the kitchen and love the natural patina that has grown on them. BPS knives use really nice leather for knives in their price range. Think of 1066 as a bargain steel, get a nice ceramic rod to touch up the edges before they get sharpening stone dull. Holy heck, I got to get one of the DBK Bushmate, those look sweet and the DBK boys know their knives.
I have one on order
I have one of their knives, pretty much a full tang mora. Its nice and the sheath is top tier. Youll pay as much for a sheath alone as you do for a good knife and quality sheath.
I stepped away for a while but coming back I forgot how well you could present who a knife is for. I think this one is a go for me. Basic carbon camp/cook knife that isn't a pry bar or a scandi grind.
Thank you for sharing with us. Now to catch up with what I have missed over the past season. (I'm an Autumn/Winter only camper).
The handles are beyond Oak. They are BOG Oak. From Oak tree's that died, fell over into a bog and then over the years the wood was very well preserved. To the point that furniture makes and stringed instrument makes fight over it. Its very dense and stable. I just sanded the ones on my knife then treated them with boiled Linseed Oil. They look great against the blued blade.
BPS makes good knives. I have owned one of their Bushcraft models for years and it is a great knife.
I got one after seeing your video. Thanks for the review.
Definitely on the light & thin side...
I'd put this in the "nice kitchen knife" category, but I'm sure it will take on most camp/hunting/fishing tasks with no problem. That sheath is excellent quality 👍👍
For the price, BPS knives are an excellent choice. Well made and extremely sharp out of the box. However, finish quality, especially the symmetry of the handle is often hit and miss. Sometimes a slightly higher profile on one side than the other. Yes, the sheaths are of very good quality but some in cases do not hold the knife snuggly. Overall, they are a decent knive at a decent price. I have never believed that a knife should double as a hatch or an axe ie. battoning wood. Completely different tools. Thanks for the videos. Very detailed, non-biased and informative.
I have 2 BPS knives and they have hickory handles. The Savage has oak. I wonder why??
Thanks Aaron for the review. I like the way that it looks and the great sheath. Bummer about the steel though. In this price range I'd stick to a Mora like a bush black or kansbol or something. The sandbag hang might muff up many knives...seems extreme...whew! Some pucker factor on that one. Would not want to do that to most of my knives.
Well it survived at least, the unreasonable torture test better than I would fare in a strong man competition.
Great find mate.
Look at it from a different point of view. Buy the sheath and get the knife as a bonus for those people who have negative comments about the knife. Personally I think this company makes excellent lives. People don't always use knives for cutting through wood. You could be out in the field or on a farm harvesting food crops Etc.
Hi Aaron . I got one a few months back I didn't keep it long, although I loved it and it was mostly what I was looking for. My findings mirrors yours. The reason I didn't keep it was even though the sheath was awesome it was so tight the spine lined up to the back inside or the sheath revealed that the edge was right at the stitching on the welt, I felt it was just a matter of time till I cut through the stitching. I was very torn sending it back and still am. Thanks
Its easy to make the knife fit the sheath better. Just soak the knife sheath in Boiled Linseed Oil. insert the knife a few times, then with knife in the sheath, set it aside in a warm dry place, to dry. When it does you will not only have a sheath that fits nicely, but is now water proofed. I've had my Savage for about a year now with no sheath problems.
@@longrider42 when I overlaid the knife on the outside of the sheath the cutting edge overlapped the stitching the leather would have to stretch a bit but I could have done what you suggestedand taped the blade so it didn't cut into the stitching while it adjusted and set. Im still am not happy about returning it because the grinds and handle where symmetrical, Bps does sell the same size sheath reasonably priced just a different color, if it was an 1/8" wider I would have kept it . I plan on getting another someday anyway. Thanks
@@steellovingyou8673 You should have contacted BPS and told them the problem. They might have sent you the wrong sheath.
@@longrider42 I should have, it looked like the right one. I really loved the knife and sheath so I should have.
Got it, couldn't resist
Allow me to be the annoying guy in the comment section saying "nOt BeTtEr ThAn A mOrA..."
Hahah!! I knew we’d get some of those. Of course moras are excellent.
Ever try one🤔
Garberg or Bushcraft Black maybe, but I'd hate to see the 45 lb. hang test on a rat-tail tang Mora. Hmmm, video?
It depends what you are using them for. As a guy who actually owns both, I bought this one just for field dressing/skinning deer. The flat grind made it great for field dressing and skinning. It is still shaving sharp. Last year I used one of my moras for the same task, I ended up with two small chips in the blade.
Got butter knives better then moras
Looks like a similar size to my RAT5, maybe a hair smaller, with a nice blade shape, hc steel and its half the price. Sure I'd try one out!
OK I'm an admitted knife junkie have been since i was a kid. Ive grown up camping hunting and living in the outdoors, i even own a cabin in the sierra Nevada mountains, i have never carved a spoon, or made a wooden canoe, made underwear out of a deer hide, and the only knife i ever broke was a schrade hunting knife that fell out of my sheath and landed on granite rock and snapped in half. so now that that's out of the way i have purchased more knives based on your reviews in the last 3 months that the last 40 years. the average kid or camper may be even a hunter will never destroy that knife or most other sub $100. knives. keep it up and knife on...
Nice. Gonna have to look at one as a loner knife. Always looking out.
Thank you as always
Check out the new mossy oak fixed blade with leather sheath. For under $20 it has a 7 CR blade. But absolutely banger of a knife. They call it the mossy oak 8.5 fixed blade knife with leather sheath. You can get a g10 handle scale or wood handle scale. I've been care one for three weeks now. Been absolutely amazed by it. Only dropped it when I got it out of the box just to get a hair sharper. But yes that knife there is next on my list
This knife is super easy to hone on a ceramic rod, takes like 30 seconds and its back to hair popping sharp.
The B1 CSH from BPS is very similar but has a scandi blade and is $15 cheaper.
Mora has this style of knife down to an art at a great price. Kinda like victorinox has swiss army style knives dialed in.
I'd buy one. Just wish they had slightly better steel. 1095 at $50-60 would be a solid deal. Maybe 80cr. I will say 1066 is so easy to sharpen
I think BPS knives are great value for money. You usually have a ferrocerium rod included with the deal, which ups the value for money. In the UK there are no import taxes or customs duty on purchases coming from Ukraine (to help their war efforts) which makes it cheaper than it would normally be. Keep it well oiled or Vaselined and you'll have no problems with rust.
Ordered on BPS site, first took a month to get to UK from Ukraine. The second (Savage) just two weeks.
The new Pineapple Patina, may have to try it.
I think it did very well from your torture tests given the price point. I would purchase this knife with no reservations.
Looks nice
Nice blade shape 👍 thanks
Nice review 👌 Mine arrived today, intended use in the kitchen. I have the scandi small hunter also. Great for the money I think.
How can a carbon steel perform in a kitchen? Im awaiting your review.
Adds iron to the diet. I'm used to carbon Opinel - plus I don't have a dishwasher.
Every knife in this channel is the best 😂😂😂
Did you see the new one that was a collab with dbk ??? They released their vid today.
I did look like it’s got good potential!
I have a few bps knives all came razor sharp excellent knives for the money
I put a really nice mustard patina on an LPT Leuko 😀 and my buddy did me a favor by buffing it off.🙄
For $40 with a quality leather sheath. Looks like a winner to me.
If I needed a knife like that I'd use it, I'm not gonna be hanging 45lbs off it so it would be fine! I've used lighter duty knives for more before, big fan of argentine facons which are basically robust kitchen knives that were used by gauchos for basically everything from fighting, putting down live stock, survival, and most importantly to carve up a good bbq
G'day Aaron, reminds me a bit of the Jarosz Turok, though that one was a high sabre in 1095 Cro van and of course, priced accordingly. Mind you not everyone can, or wants, to pay bigger dollars for a 'camp knife" so it has a place I reckon, and as you said with the proviso of having other tools for the HD tasks. I sure wouldn't be taking it anywhere away from a car camping site or backyard as examples, .... i.e. you'd be mad to bet your life on it.
Btw; I like the standardised testing mate and I reckon its more than fair, with what looks to be a relatively soft pine species. I suspect even with the clamp/sandbag test there will be some relief with deformation of the timber across the blade, .... are you finding that ? Cheers Duke.
I love my BPS HK5. I like it better than my Cold Steel CRk which cost more. And I like it as much as my Cold Steel Master Hunter which was FARRRR more expensive with a 💩 sheath. I will be getting the BS1 when it’s back in stock.
I use mine as a kitchen knife. I keep it sharp with a ceramic rod. No problems.
What does the sandbag test simulate?
I am testing durability, tempering, and a few other things.
With a blade that thin the deformations are not surprising.
You should try the jakkaripukko 110 it’s pretty good for the money
Looks like a Schrade SCHF42D. Nearly identical
Oops thanks for showcasing this knife . It looks swell
there is also beavercraft from ukraine, they also make nice outdoor budget knives out of 1066, but with a tad more hrc . the also make all kinds of carving knives. got the big spoon knive, really nice tool.
please show some more good budget knives
I've got one but 2,8 mm thickness way to thin for me
One personal issue I have is that people keep talking about budget blades and how they're great because if you lose them they don't cost you that much but for a lot of us when we buy a knife we intend to keep it forever and not toss it haphazardly into our vehicles or to replace a knife because we want to avoid the shame of using a so-called budget blade even here in these comments we have people complaining about knives that cost $100 a piece. Sometimes it seems like we have to pay a lot of money for what people consider good quality and yet I'm running around with a gerber Scout that cost less than $30 and has lasted me about 10 years and it still working. And the fact is that's some of the Schrades from A couple of years ago were comparable to others that cost twice as much and you yourself Aaron have done a lot of videos on less expensive knives that offered great performance. We all appreciate the fact that if we pay a little more that we get something better but I often wonder if we're not just paying more because somebody can get away with charging us or convincing us that their brand is superior to another
There is a double edged sword that. Have use $40 and $400 knives there is a difference in quality you feel. But a working knife is often all you need.
The BPS knives is all a man needs and maybe PKS knives
I have the Adventurer. Haven't use it yet. (Kinda afraid to) I like the price and style just kinda queezy on the quality. Some love them some I've seen in video's Chip/Break. Have to get my courage up and give it a work out. That's the only way I'll know if I wasted money or not.
Use tha f$$$ out of it! So you know if it can be trusted.
@@jasonh.8362 yep. Very much my intention.
Just do not chop or batton wood with it, and it will hold up fine. Its a Camp/Kitchen knife, and for that is a great one. I got the Savage.
I picked up a few BPS models early this year. I liked them so much I bought two more for my sons for our Summer camping adventures here in Northern Colorado.
We beat the brakes off of them, and they are still going strong. Just needed some basic sharpening and stropping and a little oil and they are all good to go again.
Highly recommended.
That is awesome!
check out the Ted Foss Hyenas knife. I'm really impressed with it.
I think I would just save up a little longer and get a ESSE 4
If I'm leaning toward the cheaper side it's gotta be a mora or joker.
I think it would work fine if you bring other tools with it, especially if you have to go outdoors on a budget.
It's $40... what do you expect? For that price, I think it's pretty darn good. Another great review!
Thanks for watching!
Just get a SRK. Thanks for the review
Good review showing the pros and cons. To answer your question. No, this is not the best budget camp knife. The profile and thin full flat blade suggests a small chefs knife for in the field, but it's made of 1066 carbon steel. You'll spend more time cleaning the knife than actual cooking. The patina will rub off on your food. So for this it should be stainless steel and even a simple 12C27 steel will not dull that fast. For other camp chores it's obviously to thin and a full flat grind has no advantage. For this a thicker saber or scandi grind is more useful and a not so wide blade shape. So it's cheap for what you get but I have no clue who this knife is for? And for less money you can buy a Hultafors GK for the rougher work and a Mora Companion for the food part and still save 10 dollar. If you want to bring just one budget knife the Mora Companion HD in stainless steel comes to mind and save 20 dollar.
men..... you sold me this knife :)
Bro, my wife says I should stop watching your videos and keep my money in the pocket. She might be right, but I can’t stop! 😂
One of these is literally my kitchen knife...
Hmm, worse edge retention than ESEE, you say?! Now, THAT is quite an accomplishment! Has to be made from play doh or something then!
Great F-ing deal bro 😎
Cool
try #2 of asking for the joker avispa. love the videos
It maybe a bit 👍
@@gideonstactical i’ll wait, thanks for the reply
I have my doubts about 1066
I tolerate 1075
I LOVE 1095
BPS reminds me of Joker knives in terms of value. Although, I think joker outclasses them with their sheer amount of different knives that are very budget friendly. Nice to see other alternatives though.
Would you be willing to compare it to the Eafengrow EF135?
If it compares favorably at $20 less at bushcraft then it may be the one to go for.
BPS is awesome
They used to be Ukrainian made back a few years ago they only sold on Etsy, they've since sold out to and are now mass produced in china.
I love these knives, priced a bit more than a Mora they are still a bargain.
I've heard, and from the video it seems true, that the sheath is too small for this knife, and it doesn't fit all the way in; comments?
Works great for me
How grippy is that wood handle? I really prefer g10 or micarta. Some Amazon reviews said the sheath was actually designed for another one of their knives, and the knife was cutting the sheath. What do YOU think? Honestly, it looks great for $40! I would rather buy from and support Ukraine rather than China ANY day also.
If I want to use carbon steel , the Green River , or the Old Hickory will do every thing that one will do , and for half the price.
But for a camp knife , my money is on the Mora almost every time .
Can you give me a link to a knife of that quality with that sheath for half the price please?
everytime yall revie these good budget knives they double in price in a month
That's a bold statement
Watch till the end!
Thank you for showcasing this knife . It looks swell .
Cotton?
@@gideonstactical Have a CRKT Ramadi arriving tomorrow. Get you one and let me know what you think.
id own one of it wasn’t 1066. there’s really no reason for it to not be at least 1075 when there *were* ontario made in USA knives at the same price in 1075.
It might be all they have access to? But I agree 1075 would be preferred
