i love how tzuyu said her skin was the color of healthy skin. we need idols to appreciate all skin tones not be disgusted by them. tzuyus so real for that
Tbh they really shouldn't think twice before saying anything because many of their fans are quite young and they have the absolute power to influence the future generation.
Wow that was way more explicit that I could imagine, I love the fact that Tzuyu said that she's dark and like her healthy skin ❤ I appreciate how you explain what colorism is and why is something very common in idol culture, still wrong and unnecessary yet understandable as big part of the industry of entertainment and present in many many countries.
Props to you for making a video about this important topic. A lot of people want to just pretend this isn't going on but it's never going to get better if we don't address it.
It's surprising because there are Groups who make fun of each other for being darker. I mean like I saw a video from THE BOYZ and there was a member who is also a bit darker and one member said that he and the members like him how he is and that his darker skin is actually pretty. THAT WAS SO CUTE. As an Asian I don't understand the problem from darker skin I even think it's prettier than looking like a ghost or smth
The fact these kpop idols be getting those medicine injection to get whiter is funny to me, they even hate their normal tanned skin ☠️ (some idols) + what he means by" I thought he was Jamaican" bro better don't let Jamaicans see him in their country saying shit about them cuz it won't go well. These idols better get more education in their head and stop talking crap. As tzuyu say black is a healthy skin color no wonder I like that girl
Any natural skin color is healthy so yea. And if you watched the full video you would have heard that 99% of these clips were from the past so the skin color isn't much of an issue nowadays. Since they started opening up to the Western Market, Korea as kpop changed and adapted as well. Now, the borders and its seas were closed until 1876 BUT keep in mind the country only allowed some rich people to travel out of Korea up until 1989. So no, they didn't meet much, they stayed very closed and mostly saw Europeans and Asians during this times, still not enough for the country to focus on new beauty standards.
It's the fact that SM idols are repeat offenders. I can never look at Taeyong, Taemin, Key, DO, Chen, Chanyeol, Chenle, Jisung, Renjun, Jeno, Boa the same again. This stuff hurts and they should know by now that it makes a lot of their fans uncomfortable.
it's always for the same reason, tan means being rich in the west because it means a person can afford getting a holiday. roughly a century ago there was the opposite phenomenon though, rich people could do jobs that didn't require staying outside so they didn't get tanned, while poor people had to do hard jobs outside so they got tanned. It's all about classism. Maybe one day the beauty standards will change in S.Korea too, but honestly anyone should be able to look however they want without people criticizing you.
6:50 wow Sehun looked mad. Before that he looked more confused that his teammates were actually laughing along and he seemed to be the only one not laughing (not sure about those out of frame). I feel bad that Kai or others can't really get mad, because it's so typical for people to try to guilt trip the person for not finding the "joke" funny. Good for the few twice girls for actually rejecting the comment, even if it made the situation a bit tense.
I think Kai was truly sensitive about those comments. Other idols might be ok with the joke, but Kai has always looked pretty uncomfy and it seems he has always considered his skin as a negative characteristic. Joking about someone else's body is so normalized and in their early career that was probably the only laughable flaw they could see in him, so it was brought up very often in all sorts of situations. The Twice girls definitely handled it in the best way possible, you pretty much never see them making those types of jokes among themselves.
They really need to get their eyes check if they think a little tan will cause them to think their members are shadows. I know they are joking, but it doesn’t make sense. Instead of getting plastic surgery, they need to see an ophthalmologist. The irony is they got their style, dancing, rapping and persona from black culture. Was it hard for them to see those black artists they look up to as shadows?🧐
This is Colorism not Racism brining up black People has honestly not alot to do with it. Colorism has been around in Asia since thousand of Years sadly enough
I find it hard to comprehend how come these idols are ruined if they have a "dating scandal" or just a hint of a bullying scandal, even if it's not true, but offending and mistreating their own members for such a ridiculous thing as having a tan is not considered scandalous and inappropriate.
Welcome to the world where every country has diffrent cultures and histories that doesnt revolve around the western world, obviusly this comments where disgusting but some western people make it sound like omg how is this allowed? when this is the most normal thing in most asían countries, that doesnt mean is right tho
Just think......about what they actually think about black people behind closed doors or what they actually is be saying to their members when the cameras are off
they're hating on asians with dark skin, not black people. what does colorism have to do with racism HERE? at most they talk abt their skin tone BC OF THIS, not their entire existence bc of their race. having dark skin isn't all there is to the black race. now they could be saying anything abt anyone, we don't know anything. but THIS behavior/video isn't the right evidence. dark dirty tanned skin doesn't suit asians. but black people's skin aren't dirty, it's their natural skin, and it suits them.
@@Santia5aThey literally compare their members to black people multiple times in this video alone, and koreans regularly make black people the butt of their unfunny jokes. So clearly, their obsession goes deeper. We see it all the time in variety shows and kdramas too 💓 Don’t act braindead on purpose.
Actually Tzuyu was consider “the most beautiful women “ in the top 100 . And also Taehyun was ranked the most handsome some Man Most of the tanned members are actually the “ visuals “ of the group
Unfortunately this is ingrained in their culture from a young age. They’re not purposely trying to be mean, it’s done in a joking manner. Especially being in the kpop industry, and Korea being a country with such extreme beauty standards, they’re constantly told that they need to be skinny, not be muscular, never get a tan, and be pale/fair skinned to be more attractive/beautiful/“fit the standard”.
Don’t baby Korean ppl. What makes you think that they don’t mean it in a disrespectful way? People know when they are saying something mean, why else would the tan idols get upset?
Before I forget, Taeyong didn't talked about Lucas's skin color. It was the lighting. That day I also thought that there wasn't enough light on Lucas, because I couldn't see him either.
I still remember Nct's first ever interview. It was after they debuted with seventh sense with one of the super junior members. I'll never forget how fixated Taeyong was on Jaehyun's skin and I got the impression he put a lot of value on light skin color. It seems like a lot of Sm artists are colorist. This video barely scratches the surface. I mean a super junior member even wore actual blackface with overdrawn lips and everything
It's just the tip of the iceberg unfortunately. It seemed like making fun of N's skin was their favorite thing to do back then I found it funny how Ravi was only a shade lighter than him when I saw them in person. If N wasn't there he would've been the darkest for sure. Most of these idols are more tan than white irl so these jokes and their ridiculous foundation colors always came off self hating to me
And meanwhile me over here where being a tan is a sign of healthy skin and colour - I'm too pale and being told I look sick..so I think this is global issue
It's ironic to me, because the members who are always making those comments I think are one of the least visually attractive members in their respective groups. To each their own though lol
i read a comment on reddit once, it was about how hyeyeon and sooyoung from snsd probably made colorist remarks towards yuri to feel a little bit better about themselves(yuri was considered a visual so in their head they were like, shes a visual but atleast im whiter than her)
Not that I didn't know that people in Kmedia are racist, but RM calling V and JHope dark when he himself has the same complexion is so bigoted. Disappointed in all of them.
@VishuZ1 and you don't see a problem with that, being called dark in a derogatory way "on a daily basis"?! For most people the safest reaction is to laugh. And considering how dark skinned people are considered diseased, the situation becomes worse.
@VishuZ1 Oh, so now we’re defending hurtful jokes just because someone laughed? Interesting logic. Some people laugh to hide being uncomfortable, but that doesn’t make it okay. And sure, I’m a fan-but that doesn’t mean I’m going to ignore behavior that’s problematic. Calling out something that seems off isn’t ‘making a joke out of racism’; it’s about having a conversation. Honestly, you’re not making much sense here, maybe because your English is so poor. Maybe you should take your own advice and stop acting like calling out issues means I’m somehow dismissing them.
@VishuZ1 Oh, thanks for the ‘brightest’ comment, but maybe save your self-descriptions for another day-you’re definitely not the brightest here. I’d rather call out double standards than defend someone blindly like it’s my life’s purpose. Funny how when I defend someone I respect, it’s ‘hypocrisy,’ but when you do it, it’s loyalty? Guess we have different definitions of ‘logic.’ And sure, I’ll wear the ‘Grammar Police’ badge proudly-maybe it’ll help you keep your story straight next time.
@VishuZ1 oh dear Lord! You're the one defending a racist. I have no favourite member. The fact that it was so easy for you to jump to such conclusions means you're a bigoted person. God, get some help. And call out racism, whoever commits it. You solo fans will damage BTS more than anyone.
They've made so many changes ever since they obtained the global eye. It happened so quickly I also find it hard to believe they sincerely changed. I think Taemin and Key got too comfortable chatting with each other and slipped up. These idols probably still say this stuff when cameras are gone
Still makes me mad whenever I see that clip of Minho. If his friends can say that in public I don't even want to imagine the jokes they throw around when they are not in public
I don't know what to say i can't defend SHINee they are seniors in the industry and Kibum knows English he knows its colorist and Taemin started rambling and Kibum joined him... Why Key? I know they are Korean and Kibum isn't American but they could seriously do better to avoid any controversy
@@Maletearsasoilespecially as someone who debuted at 14, he internalized a lot of what is taught. However, it’s not an excuse and he has apologized. I hope they have learned from that especially working and getting close with black dancers and choreographers 😢
I do think thats kinda sad. Being darker tone means something bad. But of course i wld im darker tone! Lol... and probably lean towards the darker tone idols more... truthfully one reason i love minho! And Kai! And crazy. Even within my own ethnic culture...darker tones are looked down... and again i always wonder why? I love my tone wld never chng it kudos to idols of darker tones. I haven't seen anybody talking about the racist joke that Namjoon did in 05:46 Since he's a BTS member, people will accept his racists attitudes, but I think it's disgusting. 🤮 J-hope is my bias and a like his skin color, also V is the prettiest member.
I've always had this androgynous look, but in my case it was fuel for bullies when I was growing up. I embraced it, used it to my advantage in my acting / modeling career, I was almost the face of Leon in these new Resident Evil games 🙂 To anyone who's ever been a victim of hate / violence because of their appearance, gender, orientation, race : DO NOT ever let a hateful notion 'there's something wrong with me' sink in. Trust me, it's a recipe for self hatred and compulsive anxieties later on. When we suffer and we need a break, it's only natural to think: 'maybe if I wasn't 'different', if I was 'normal' I would be accepted. No, haters will always find something else to prey upon. They're extremely toxic who can see your potential and value but will drag you down with intent and hideus determination, when they notice a slightest sign of insecurity. Remember; There's never anything wrong with you.
I needed this reminder especially today. Cheers to your continued success. I'm making efforts to change my mindset and keep those negative comments from sinking in.
@@jaywhypapi_supremacy androgynous just means both feminine (girl) and masculine (boy). a good way to put it in a sentence could be to say “this girl has very androgynous looks.”

I'm not surprised by the vixx one tbh, but damn it was still disappointing and rough. "you looked jamaican", really jaehwan? jamaica is a pretty diverse place, but I can guarantee most people there are much darker than hakyeon 😭😭 and alot of the shit coming from hongbin too...maybe it's not bad that he aint in the group anymore 🤷🏽♀️. I'm glad tzuyu and the other twice members in that clip were combating the colorism a little though, it was really nice to see I feel really bad for kai and hakyeon tho, they just looked so done with all the nonsense..
I would like to scream at them and tell them that at least in the screen, they next to him, Kai looks just 1 shade darker and still he is in the light skin spectrum. I know this culture but If people dare to said that I will cut that so it would not become an inside joke.
Kai actually was significantly darker when I saw them in person. Idk if they do things to make him look lighter or he's lighted his skin since then or not. I always thought they wanted to take him down a peg because they were jealous of how much he shined. Unfortunately Kai really suffered because of them
Chanyeol was literally mocked for having a big ears and called names like "Yoda " or that circus elephant with big ear. In exo all of them tease each other
Chanyeol and Baekhyun were the biggest culprits. Idk how Baekhyun was bypassed. Chen made a few jokes too but he always was one of the loudest ones laughing
@@Feministandproud not often and it doesn't excuse his behavior. Baekhyun also made colorist comments and was caught using ablelist language in the beginning of his career I used to keep up with these things back in the day so I knew who to stop supporting. If you look I'm sure there are still places you can find articles about it
Tbh I know that they don't mean anything bad about these racial "jokes", I still get sad, because they think that it's okay to say these things. Like the one time when BTS's RM and, I think Jin, made a joke about Christianity when V talked about his angel he hears sometimes. I know that RM is a Atheist and the rest of BTS are non religious, it sometimes hurt and you just have to laugh and smile as a fan, because you feel like you will disappoint them if you don't. By the way I'm no longer ARMY. Not because of BTS, but because of the fandom's toxicity.
Hey , I’m a little late but I feel you. I’m Christian and I loved bts( like a lot , like I watched them everyday) and it hurts me when they make fun of other people’s religion like this. Bts was my home , my family when I was in a very deep depression. But I saw the video arm make fun of v and j’hope dark skin I felt hurt cause I’m brown. Bts didn’t felt like home anymore . Even though they didn’t made fun of me directly they still made fun of someone else’s skin just because it was darker. So I stopped stanning them. But now I’ve grown up , I realise that Koreans are obsessed with fair skin. So maybe for them it was just “ normal” to make fun of dark skin tones. I’m sure they realized their mistake and won’t do it again , at least not on camera lol . And back to the religion part, well honestly people who are non religious can not understand that religion is very important for people who are religious. They just think it’s some sort of tradition or something. So they think it’s okay to make fun. But the most important part is when your friend or someone makes fun of something that is important to you, you just tell ‘‘em to stop. And if they don’t then you should block them. And also , idols are human , they def are full of flaws like everyone. If they said something offensive then they should be scolded ( a little not canceled 😂) you don’t have to laugh with them if u think it’s offensive.
I love light skin, like Suga, his skin is so beautiful its almost ethereal. I love darker skin it looks so silky smooth and warm. I prefer dark because its Korea, they are Korean. They should not be mocked for having one of the many beautiful skin tones that comes with being born Asian. I'm honestly jealous. I always wanted darker skin. But being a nordic redhead that's an impossibility. So I admire from afar.
Of course, Chanyeol, Xiumin and D.O.s flop butts come for iconic Kai. Kai is STILL very popular and does numbers and Chanyeol is still struggling to break out on his own. He doesn't have the range or presence. This has only taught me that they wish they had darker skin and resent having to conform so they bully Kai about it. It's so sad.
i read a comment on reddit once, it was about how hyeyeon and sooyoung from snsd probably made colorist remarks towards yuri to feel a little bit better about themselves(yuri was considered a visual so in their head they were like, shes a visual and more popular but atleast im whiter than her)
We should teach idols about colorism then trolling them for dating, maybe then kpop will look more normal and we will know more about idols rather than stalking them and making their life a living hell . But i wonder all those saesang who stalk their idols why don't they reveal the bad and criminal idols ?? Like sungri , tail , kris etc ??
Teach them? Are they one year olds? It's disgusting how you guys baby grown up adults who should know better. If I held my eyes mocking them would you make the same excuse for me?
Key and Taemin apologized multiple times, on various platforms. Instead of focusing on the idols, perhaps it would be best to focus on the Korean culture that perpetuates this ignorance.
You guys are so annoying always defending Korean colorism and racism. We’re gonna call them out no matter what we’re gonna always call them out so stop being weird and trying to unfocus their colorism☠️
I am actually Black and live in the United States. It is sad that Taemin and key behaved this way...But, they did apologize in public,,,even if it was only by letter. I don't think they are cruel people. It is the same with Blacks Americans, Indians, Philipino, Arabs, Africans. Colorism is very hurtful. I see Kai's face and he is insulted a lot by his own members. He is Taemin's best friend. I hope Taemin is sincere. All of these K pop peoples life dance and music is from us. Black people. they should give us credit. Micheal jackson is the king of Pop and K pop. Too bad, he is not around to see it. I think their colorist remarks may have been offensive to him. He would have spoken up. For sure. Joking about someone getting tan is not the same thing as making fun of someone for having naturally darker skin. People call everything racist nowadays.
They're saying it's colorist because they're making fun of idols for having a darker skin tone, having a darker skin tone is mainly seen as ugly compared to people with lighter skin tones. Racism and colorism are 2 different things, hope this clears things up
Tbh, I find it strange why people would criticize one culture’s beauty standard..Pale, smooth and blemish-free skin is prized in a lot of countries, but darker, tan skin is also prized in others. How come I don’t hear about people saying Americans or Australians are colorist for preferring tan skin and going out of their way to get a tan? People find different things beautiful. I think it’s kind of arrogant to think there is a need to educate another culture about what’s appropriate according to your culture. Just let them be themselves
I agree but disagree with this. Beauty standards in general sucks. Being to tan and having a slim waist and hourglass body sucks. Being skinny and too light sucks. It implies that those who do not fit these standards that they are not enough to be considered conventionally attractive. Not that anyone can fix this. But it is a general problem around the world. Even in africa, skin bleaching and having a risk of cancer is bad. We don't need to conform. We need to accept.
@@girlonline9038 I don’t know. For me at least, complaining that the beauty standards is too restrictive or too toxic implies a desire to conform in some way. If you don’t care about the beauty standards, regardless of what they may be, it shouldn’t bother you so much. I think different people find beauty in different things. Even within a set culture, there would be people who don’t find the things that others do attractive. Also, to be frank, unless you have most or all of it, I don’t think it really matters that much. I mean, so what if you have darker skin, you could still be attractive like Kai or Haechan or Minho.

I feel bad that Kai or others can't really get mad, because it's so typical for people to try to guilt trip the person for not finding the "joke" funny.
Good for the few twice girls for actually rejecting the comment, even if it made the situation a bit tense.
Sehun is such a sweetheart ❤
I think Kai was truly sensitive about those comments. Other idols might be ok with the joke, but Kai has always looked pretty uncomfy and it seems he has always considered his skin as a negative characteristic. Joking about someone else's body is so normalized and in their early career that was probably the only laughable flaw they could see in him, so it was brought up very often in all sorts of situations.
The Twice girls definitely handled it in the best way possible, you pretty much never see them making those types of jokes among themselves.
N being harrassed for his darker skin breaks my heart. I got into Vixx because of him and to see him treated this way makes my blood boil.

They reflect the prejudices of their culture. Time to self reflect as a country.
I wish I could like this twice
They really need to get their eyes check if they think a little tan will cause them to think their members are shadows. I know they are joking, but it doesn’t make sense. Instead of getting plastic surgery, they need to see an ophthalmologist.
The irony is they got their style, dancing, rapping and persona from black culture. Was it hard for them to see those black artists they look up to as shadows?🧐

Just think......about what they actually think about black people behind closed doors or what they actually is be saying to their members when the cameras are off
Why they MUST think about black people?
they're hating on asians with dark skin, not black people. what does colorism have to do with racism HERE? at most they talk abt their skin tone BC OF THIS, not their entire existence bc of their race. having dark skin isn't all there is to the black race. now they could be saying anything abt anyone, we don't know anything. but THIS behavior/video isn't the right evidence. dark dirty tanned skin doesn't suit asians. but black people's skin aren't dirty, it's their natural skin, and it suits them.
@@Santia5a in the video they mentioned black people a few times😉 they compare it with skin of black people…

Most of the tanned members are actually the “ visuals “ of the group
exactly because pale skin isn't a requirement of having a good face card, period. 💋
It's probably jealousy then to try to bring them down a notch.
Jin is the visual member lol
Unfortunately this is ingrained in their culture from a young age. They’re not purposely trying to be mean, it’s done in a joking manner. Especially being in the kpop industry, and Korea being a country with such extreme beauty standards, they’re constantly told that they need to be skinny, not be muscular, never get a tan, and be pale/fair skinned to be more attractive/beautiful/“fit the standard”.
Not an excuse I don’t give a fuck if it was ingrained it’s disgusting and colorist.
Don’t baby Korean ppl. What makes you think that they don’t mean it in a disrespectful way? People know when they are saying something mean, why else would the tan idols get upset?
Minho's skin looks healthy. He l8kes sports and doing outdoor stuff so it's only natural. I also love that he embraces that tan. He is gorgeous
Wow the vixx videos were endless lmao
It's just the tip of the iceberg unfortunately. It seemed like making fun of N's skin was their favorite thing to do back then
I found it funny how Ravi was only a shade lighter than him when I saw them in person. If N wasn't there he would've been the darkest for sure. Most of these idols are more tan than white irl so these jokes and their ridiculous foundation colors always came off self hating to me

@VishuZ1 When talking about looks, It's a subjective matter, not an objective one. You're wrong.
i read a comment on reddit once, it was about how hyeyeon and sooyoung from snsd probably made colorist remarks towards yuri to feel a little bit better about themselves(yuri was considered a visual so in their head they were like, shes a visual but atleast im whiter than her)
Not that I didn't know that people in Kmedia are racist, but RM calling V and JHope dark when he himself has the same complexion is so bigoted. Disappointed in all of them.
@VishuZ1u make no sense. Some people gets hurt but they don’t show it
@VishuZ1 and you don't see a problem with that, being called dark in a derogatory way "on a daily basis"?!

To anyone who's ever been a victim of hate / violence because of their appearance, gender, orientation, race : DO NOT ever let a hateful notion 'there's something wrong with me' sink in. Trust me, it's a recipe for self hatred and compulsive anxieties later on. Tbh I know that they don't mean anything bad about these racial "jokes", I still get sad, because they think that it's okay to say these things.

Joking about someone getting tan is not the same thing as making fun of someone for having naturally darker skin. People call everything racist nowadays.
Can you please explain what you mean, I'm kinda confused
They're saying it's colorist because they're making fun of idols for having a darker skin tone, having a darker skin tone is mainly seen as ugly compared to people with lighter skin tones. Racism and colorism are 2 different things, hope this clears things up
Also the part with Xiumin he even complimented Kai’s dark skin. How is that even colorism?
Obviously it aint racist, cos they're making fun of eachother instead of making fun of another group of people. 🤷🏾♀️👏🏾
