      Hi Tomas, its the story which makes an image camera actually is only 10 -15 % of final image.. But that said when we are buying a camera we should expect a camera manufacturer to give us their best as we will give our best to our clients, Now what I do want to point out is 6D2 which has royally pissed me off. Its jury rigged product which should not have been made and would/will give me poorer return for my hard earned money.. So to all I would really recommend to go for cheapest relevant camera and get the best lens..
      I don't know why I wrote this..

      Anil Maurya I completely agree with you about Canon 6D Mark II. Unfortunately it's no good choice right now from Canon you have to go for 5D Mark IV if you want to good pro camera.

      @Anil: It's called business Anil. If Canon puts all the goods on the 6Dmk2 who the hell is crazy enough to buy the 5D4 and the 1Dx2 you get what i mean? Reason why the 6Dmk2 is a single SD camera as to the dual card slot of the 5D4 that is reason enough for pros to buy the 5D4... the 1Dx has the full 4k capability as to the cropped 4k of the 5D4 it's not that they're cheating it just business.

      Dont drop the camera by any means, sometimes your camera just takes some damage when you are working and the canon cameras are built like bricks, my assistant drop my 5dmk2 right of an open rucksack to the sideway and nothing happend just a little scratch, i rather use a rig, or a stabilizer but go for a camera built like a tank.

    I personally haven't had any issues with the focus on my 6D Mark ii. In fact I find it to be one of the standouts on the camera. It's true that it has a little more contrast, so I dial it back by one. Against the 5D mark iii it has more magenta, but in general I've found the colours to be great. I believe the 6D Mark ii is sharper, and I do believe it's a little better in noise performance. And for the record I have a 5D ii 2x 5D iii and the 6D ii. So definitely had a good look at the difference. 6D ii is with me every day, even in 2020 I'm not ready for mirrorless and none of these camera's are dead yet. (5D mark ii still rocks)

    This is why I just got a 5DII when I upgraded to full frame. Even with a camera that old, basically the same image quality as a 5DIII up to ISO 400 or so... more than good enough. Although the focusing situation does suck.
    Though, you really can't pull up the shadows as much as with a 5DIII. That's fine if you know lighting and how to get your exposure right.

    I keep wondering why everyone always seems to think that more focus points are automatically better than fewer. If you don't have efficient ways to move quickly from edge to edge, the vast amount of focus points can be a disadvantage (especially for wedding and event photography). I much prefer my 5DIII over my A7rii because it's more efficient. I just can't see why most circumstances would require more than 50 focus points. This is one of the areas where I think people just get caught up on the specs without considering their feasibility in action.

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good point, Otto! I think it's also important to remember that everyone is going to have different things they are looking for in a camera and will value different specs more or less than others.

    • @ottolindholm5047
      @ottolindholm5047 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, for sure. But I was trying to make a point about the idea that you can't necessarily draw a linear correlation between the number of focus points and technical quality (specs) of the camera. If you can't efficiently move across your screen and still focus on accurate/small bits of your frame, I think you're skipping a factor. I think operability of the focus points is part of the specs too.

    • @Tzadeck
      @Tzadeck 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Having a full range of focus points is really really nice, though, if your camera can move between them quickly. I got really used to the OM-D series, where it's super easy to move between focus points and they cover the frame. So now when I'm using my Canon DSLRs I'm always frustrated.
      I'm not familiar with some of the newer Sonys, but I found their first mirrorless installments, including when they started doing full frame, annoying because you can't move between the focus points nearly as quickly as on the OM-D series, though. So I do know what you're talking about!

    sorry to disagree gentlemen, thank you for the video btw.. love all your videos. I have the 5d3 but the mk4- was such a disappoint that I decided instead to take that money and buy the a7ii instead of the mk4, to boot for the same money I also got a godox 4 speedlight wireless system and a strobe, two triggers one canon one Sony, then I got the 50mm art with the mc11 kit it was a steal I got it for about $50 more than the lens alone, throw in 4 extra batteries and the battery grip all for the price of the canon mk4 which came out with DR already in the mid teens of dxomark falling way behind 2+ year older cameras. the a7ii quickly became my main camera, and relegated the mk3 to back up. The 5axis, manual focus assist, focus peaking, zebras, WiFi, remote control, and so many more features including the ability to customize the buttons to my exact shooting style obliterated.. the canon.the dynamic range, i could never pull the shadows back or recover highlights on the canons without suffering severe banding and so many other artifacts. I use the Tamron trinity adapted with the mc11.. except for the 70-200mm in low light the others are bang on. and even then as soon as it starts to hunt, i just start turning the manual focus ring, and the focus peaking with the manual assist kicks on and bang I am there can even magnify at that point to confirm. I have never missed a shot yet. I was so impressed I went out and bought the a7rii. My other complaint with the video was if you are going to mention used prices than the Sony a7ii' s used price is extremely low, which doesn't make it even close. once you use an evf it is hard to go back to the meter even tho I was very good at judging the scene with the mk3. why guess? when you can nail it exactly the way you want the first time. When Canon releases the 6dii with lower DR and iso performance than its predecessor the 6d, it proves Canon is falling way behind in the sensor game. Wait till the next round of Sony a7's or a9's the gap will be gargantuan. I was a major canon fan when they wanted to be the best.. they no longer aim for that. Their last remaining areas of photography where they lead will be gone in the next few years, they are losing out on bodies, lenses, customers.. like the others I to would've liked to have seen the Nikons in there also, not to mention the Pentax k1 also fits the 2k range although I appreciate that would be a stretch... thanks again gentlemen, even tho I don't think the testing was scientific.. we did appreciate the effort.

      Don't own these 3, but the images in this video shows 6dii is crap actually. I think these guys eyes have problems; that pink ground in the last comparison should give you all kinds of alarms if you claim to be "professional". And I am not a Sony fanboy. I bought rx100iv on friend's advice and thought it was a piece of shit in color, always blue somehow, and sold it, and prefered the much cheaper Canon powershot s100, (that one's color is also fake but more pleasing).

    I still shoot with the 5DIII, in fact because I have upper body difficulties that make me clumsy I use a 5DII for landscapes, and I can officially report that the 5DII bounces well. It also lets me concentrate on my photography rather than worrying about damaging my camera. I think that camera should have been another entrant as a first full frame camera. To me if the camera gives you pleasure, you get great prints out of them and you can afford it, without crippling debt, then it’s the right camera for you. However, if I was buying my first full frame camera I think I’d go for the 6DII purely because it’s the most up to date technology from Canon and the choices of lenses available, but I’d also watch out for firmware updates. If I was advising anyone though I can only say what I know which is the 5DIII, but I’d suggest looking at the reviews online but avoid the comments under the TH-cam videos as these can be very vitriolic and infantile. I would suggest listening to people like yourself, who has been a successful photographer for many years and knows what he is talking about. I would also suggest watching you series about light, but that is a total aside. I think when people are spending a couple of thousand pounds they shouldn’t rush with a first purchase into that arena. Another factor to consider, if this is their first full frame camera, is have they previously had a cropped sensor camera, have they invested in a lot of glass and do they intend keeping it. So if they previously had a 80D they want to keep then it would be better to stay with Canon rather than the Sony.
    I know my 7DII has GPS, but it really it really eats into the battery and I always forget to turn it on.
    Gosh your audio must be amazing, I hid under the table when I heard the sirens, I thought they were outside my home coming for me. Another fantastic video, with sound common sense.

    If your video convinced me of anything, it's definitely don't buy Canon 6dii. You clearly missed that a7ii had better dynamic range and shadow performance: starting from your "film noir" part; the 6dii you keep saying is good actually was clearly the worst of the 3 in image quality. And the Canon magenta looks quite fake especially on the 6d ii. The swimming pool over-exposed shot actually clearly shows your 6dii white balance is off making white pink, while the 5diii is better and maybe the Sony most accurate. And the skin tones you guys are showing in this video also look ridiculously fake.

    One thing to consider is the lens-choice and also the price of it! There are a LOT of great canon lenses that are quite affordable, especially used. Good Sony lenses are still rare and quite expensive. Of course you can use adapters, but most of the time with some compromises in usability/autofocus/reliability and such..

I am still used to focusing what I want to take a photo of using the center focus point. Then moving it slightly to the left or right to properly frame it. I really like your channel. You've provin to be non biased and gave a nice honest review of all three cameras. I already own the 5D3 But want something full frame that will auto focus on video. The 6D is my cheapest option. I just can't afford the EOS-R or the 5D4. I remember when some Indi Feature film makers where going wild ober using the 5D2 to make feauture films. Such as "The Silent House" and "Like Crazy" I prefer video production as well. That's why I bought the 5D3. But sometimes I just want to use my DSLR like a camcorder and let it do the focusing for me. Because it's not like I'm shooting a film and need to block a shot. Can't wait to see more of your videos.

    The main thing us amateurs have to really consider is a camera brand ecosystem: lenses et al. Yes, adapters can help with that but there is often a loss of quality/function by using them (e.g. Canon lenses on Sony). As the knight said to Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones 3: "choose ... wisely ...".

      Connor, have you used the G Master glass?? Sony has the better glass now and at least you CAN adapt the Canon lenses to Sony. It doesn't have as many choices in some niche areas, but they're slowly filling out their range. I think with the recent release of the A7 III, there's no comparison. Anyway, this was a great comparison, I love that they put the features to the side and only looked at image/sensor quality.

    I think D750 would be easily the best choice for FF under 2k$ (and that's coming from Canon/Fuji shooter).
    Regarding these camera models up in the video, it's really hard to distinguish ISO differences with poor YT compression, but seems like 6D2 is a tiny bit ahead, but it's really close, so ISO shouldn't be main reason to decide about purchase.
    Regarding colors I see a little difference in skin tones hues between Canons with 5D3 being my favorite, 6D2 second and Sony after that, but I think Sony was constantly exposing better shots with more DR, while Canon (as always with any Canon DSLR camera) was burning highlights too easy.
    Regarding DR push at @11:00 mark, you can easily see in deep shadow details of her hair (her left shoulder) how much noise Canons have compared to Sony.
    One more thing I would like to see tested would be AF accuracy through viewfinder (with consistency of accuracy included) where I think Sony would come first (being mirrorless) and 5D3 would be second being known for reliable AF (if you account AFMA may needed for certain lenses ).
    Overall all 3 cameras has some advantages/disadvantages over other ones.
    6D2 Pros: Dual Pixel AF, GPS, flip screen, lightweight, wifi+BT
    6D2 Cons: Not really and improvement over (much cheaper) 6D1 in IQ and DR which makes it really expensive purchase, (still the same) soft 1080p video (from 5 years ago with even lower bitrate), no 4K, AF points in VF too narrow, no Spot AF point in VF, no dual slots for SD card, 1/4000 max shutter speed
    5D3 Pros: Rugged and reliable DSLR with consistently accurate AF through VF, joystick for selecting AF points, dual card slots with fast CF card, optional Magic Lantern implementation, old (good) Canon colors look
    5D3 Cons: old and expensive for 2017, no tilt/flip screen, heavy (but rugged), same soft 1080p video (but with Magic Lantern ability to shoot RAW should be considered, although it is really PITA for editing), low DR/ISO compared to Sony sensors in this price range.
    Sony A7II Pros: DR and more consistent and reliable exposure compared to other two cameras in this review, extended ISO 50 - 51200, eye AF works great through VF (good for portraits), single point AF very accurate, lightweight (but ergonomically not as fitting as Canon DSLRs), better 1080p with XAVC-S codec
    Sony A7II Cons: Sony color science is still lagging compared to Canon, Fuji, Olympus, Nikon (but easier to fix if shooting RAW), ergonomics not the best compared to other manufacturers (too much digging through menus), (good) Sony lenses are quite expensive and not smaller than Canon/Nikon counterparts with similar quality (but ability to use Canon lenses with AF over Metabones is certainly plus)

  • @Indy_at_the_beach
    @Indy_at_the_beach 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think this was a video that finally asked the hard questions about camera selection. What you revealed was that cameras today produce superb images that are scarcely different from each other despite all the oohing and aaahing over noise and dynamic range.
    I had been hearing about the vaunted Sony DR for a year and finally did a side by side test with my 5DmkIII. Yes the Sony was good but so was the Canon.
    At plus 2 stops they were the same. Above that the Sony eked out an advantage in the shadows that grew as the ISO went up. However, as JP noted, if you are actually watching your exposures, 2 stops is a ton.
    As a working pro, the notion that I need a camera capable of an excellent 4 stop push means I am trying to sell abject failures to my client.
    My desire to upgrade is gone.

    Heard a lot about the 6d mark ii being bad with focus but I shoot portraits where the subject will be around the middle anyway, so the 6d mark ii is a steal for me. Only thing I'm still trying to figure out is if the eos rp is better than the 6d mark ii.

    • @TheSlantedLens

    Guys... about the AF system. The Sony does not have PDAF edget to edge. It is only present in the center area. This is why when you put an adapted lens on there that you are limited to the center to leverage the PDAF points. It is a different story when it comes to the A7RII.
    So for stills (non-moving objects), the outside area is usable for AF. As soon as your subject is moving around you are limited to the center area if you want to achieve good reliable and fast focus.
    Also.... though the body of the A7II is cheaper, that is quickly offset by the prices of the lenses. For example the canon 70-200 f2.8L IS II USM goes for about 2k while the sony is closer to 3k. Price point per price point the sony lenses will run you from 20% more expensive and up. For a full lens line up (trinity zooms) and 2-3 primes, you can easily get the 5DIV instead of the A7II.
    But if you really want sony... you will just have to save a bit more.

    Why is the Nikon and the Pentax NOT in this comparison? “Similar features and price….” why would I choose between three cameras with similar features and price, instead of just similar price?
    Pentax for under US$1.900, (NEW), 36Mpx, PixelShift technology, IBIS, weather sealed, GPS, (with ALL GPS and 3D positioning data in the EXIF), AstroTracer, Wi-Fi, dual card slots, et al.
    Nikon D750??? Quite comparable with the two you selected. Of course, only the Pentax and the Nikon have dual card slots.
    There are four options brand new, more options if you buy used (but an unfair comparison). This video was seriously lacking. It does not discuss the BEST FF camera under $2,000, but the better of the two you looked at. That's right, the $2,300 doesn't count, and even if it did, Pentax, Sony and Nikon (New) are still better.
    Regarding colour shift, ① preferences, ② easily corrected in software, ③ preferences, ④ varies heavily with exposure on Canon systems (highlight colour shifts vs shadow colour shifts), ⑤ preferences. Did I mention easily corrected in software?
    Regarding weather sealing, the Sony α7 II is weather sealed. Furthermore, when it comes to outdoor glass, only Sony and Pentax tend to make them fully WR. Canon has some which are only fully WR when a filter is on the front, and Canon & Nikon have some which only seals ingress into the body, with a lens attached, but not ingress into the lens itself.
    When you want to make a good comparison of F-type systems under US$2,000, either do them all or none at all, and don't add in exemptions for what can be gotten used, unless you include all used options, without neglecting any new options. We learned nothing from this video regarding the BEST, because even if one of the two (or three) options was in fact the best, the fact that you left at least two options out, means we will never know).
