You know what I like about this video the most? You were insanely positive and vendor-agnostic. When there were complaints, you voiced them, but you never went after a brand or talked down on a single camera. I REALLY wish the photo/video/A/V world was more like this. Thank you for this awesome video!
Thanks for the comment. It has become the "thing to do" to make negative videos. Negative videos get better views and seem to make people think you are honest. It's sad really, I see good channels being sucked into this and making these videos purely for views.
@@markwiemels another thing I see is (relatively) positive videos with quite negative titles. Often against m43 which I find kind of sad (guess I'm afraid m43 will die simply cause of a fad of wanting to have something to look down on ...)
Due to the fact that brands now deliver a new camera every year or every six months and the new functionnalities are very poor vs the previous one, I only buy second hand camera generally which are 2 years old. They are cheap, work perfectly and are largely sufficient for me. Same for the lenses. You can find very few used lenses for 70% or half their price new. A lot of people buy prime lenses because it s pro, but finally use their zoom at 90% and re sell their prime very little used. And you know what… it s good for the planet :).
@@markwiemelsA negative video every one and a while is okay even understandable but there are so many creators making only negative content if that was all I watched on a daily basis I would be toxic myself, and my mental health would definitely suffer considerably. There's a way to be "negative" without it being hurtful or toxic. Love it. Keep up the good work. Very informative as well
This is strangely enough one of the best videos I’ve ever watched on TH-cam for the simplicity of its intent. This is a perfect example of how to review products in my opinion without a single exception. Thanks for the info, am going to start looking for a LUMIX.
I think the Nikon Z5 is a highly slept on full frame camera under $800. It has dual card slots, 24mp sensor, 4k30, and IBIS. As a portrait photographer and hobbyist wildlife photographer, the Z5 is a very capable camera that I will occasionally pick up over my higher end Nikon, Sony, and Fujifilm cameras.
Meh, the Crop at 4k is brutal on the Z5. For about $100 more, you can get a Lumix S5 Mark 1 that doesn't have a crop at 4K30, also has the dual slots plus 10 bit color.
@@BadGVideoGames it isn't a video camera. But still a very viable stills camera. And a 1.7x crop factor is still well usable. That is not much worse than APSC.
@@hendrickziegler8487 Yeah, but the S5 is just as good as a stills camera and L-mount has a lot more support too from Lens manufacturers. The Z5 is the Canon RP of its lineup, which is exactly why no one buys it 😎
I just got the Canon R7 for $750 with less than 1000 actuations including a 256gb v60 angelbird card, battery, and charger, but no box. Camera and card were unregistered, so I was able to register them with Canon and Angelbird respectively. Heck of a deal, especially since I already have the Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 art lenses and their use is made much better with the IBIS in the R7. I feel pretty stoked about the value for this rig at that price point, particularly for me and the EF mount lenses I already own. Great video, thanks!
Sorry, missed responding to this. Got lucky with an eBay auction. Made an offer 25% below Buy It Now price and seller accepted. I was stunned, but grateful!
Just bought the OM-D EM-M1 I in silver and almost new condition of €150. Everything included except for the packaging. Really nice to handle and the images are still stunning. So far, everything is working well for an already used with 9000 shutter count. This E-M1 along with my €95 PEN E-P3 are my EDC combo.
@@odyssey24 I bought an EMD1Mii for $400. It has PDAF. Great IBIS and built quality. Very nice colors. Limited video features. The 12-40 pro lens lives on this body. Dollar for dollar maybe the best value. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Got myself Lumix S5IIX and oh my the image quality, the features, the IBIS, video modes and most importantly Active Cooling with heat sink was the best one for me as I mostly shoot outdoors in Florida. I’m so happy I went with this bad boy and there’s no looking back now…superb built quality as well
Love mine. Got a 12mm f2 Walimex pro 18mm f2 fuji 55-200mm fuji I then use an M42 adapter for A hoya 49mm f1.8 A helios 44-2 A tokina 100-300 f5.6 And a tair 300mm f4.5 Plus 83.5 mm of extension tubes Had the lot for ten years and it still smashes out incredible images.
This. A Z6 can be had for dirt cheap indeed (I had mine in good condition for 500e). The autofocus isn't perfect in low light condition but for a stabilized FF camera with excellent ergonomics, it's completely unmatched at this pricepoint!
@@jolansbyeah, when you’re looking at crop sensor cameras with prices that approach full frame, it makes zero sense. Just get the entry level FF instead.
The Fujifilm X-T3 is my favorite. There is something special about the texture, build quality, and shutter sound. My X-T5 feels like a cheap piece of plastic in comparison. The X-T3 gets my vote of all the cameras you mentioned. It has a much better EVF than the X-T1 or X-T2.
I'm super happy with my X-T4, but if you're fine with always bringing extra batteries, I'd recommend saving 300€ and just getting an X-T3, that's a better deal.
There are some things I would like to add. I was surprised that you included the omd em-1. while i agree that it doesn’t look too good for OM System (formerly known as Olympus) at the moment I wouldn’t say the whole micro four thirds system is on the way out. The system still goes very strong and just brought very good new gear. Also it has stellar lenses and is the only affordable and possible to carry for wildlife photography.
I picked up the e-m1 mkI on mpb last year with just over 200 shutter count. It was less than $300. Amazing deal. I've wanted this camera since the day it came out.
I also own Lumix S5II and i think you should have mentioned couple of things: One good thing - Real Time LUT and Lumix Lab App, those can make this camera appeal to Fujifilm crowd in areas that Nikon Zf cannot, JPEG functionality and video colors without doing post processing. And one bad thing that i think cannot be ignored - moire pattern artifacts. You WILL encounter them and you WILL see them more than on camera brands that install low pass filters on their sensors. After vacation i found a few pictures with moire patterns, it was mostly fixable after post and doing resize, but there was one picture that i deemed unsalvageable. Never ever before on my fuji camera i have seen moire patterns in 4 years of usage.
This is a legendary video…As an intermediate, budget photographer/ videographer that has been binge-watching informative camera videos from most major creators since 2019 (I try to stay up to date on gear so I can buy the best used stuff when new stuff comes out) … this is the best recommendation/ comparison video I’ve seen bar-none. Idk if we just have similar likes and aesthetic choices or something, but this was really incredible. Definitely saving it to reference over the years as I save up for more used gear. Thanks for the great content and in-depth knowledge!
See camera sensors exposed like that always gives me chills. Great video . Very informative. I’ve got a Sony Fx30 and LUMIX GH4 I run for most shoots . Both are built into cinema rigs .
Seems to have very poor dynamic range at lower to mid ISO range. Around 2 full stops worse than some APSC cameras even. Might not matter too much but worth knowing before buying.
The shortcomings of the RP are well documented. Even with it being a 5 years old, for $600, it has a lot to offer. It comes down to use case and budget. I use the RP as a travel/casual/studio/backup camera. Also, I shoot primarily stills and not much video. So, it ticks off a lot of boxes for me.
Great video as always Mark, I have never even considered Olympus, and after your first recomendation of the EM-1 spent some hours learning about Olympus and I think it will be my choice of new camera, searching for a deal on E-M1 Mk III now. Congrats on the video!
@@dontipton4570agreed I went m4/3 about a year ago and have never regretted it. The extra features on the Olympus and lumix bodies are great to have. Pro capture is a game changer for fast action shooting. I also enjoy live composite and focus stacking. The 12-100mm is a great choice I would also recommend the Panasonic 12-60mm 2.8-4 and 50-200mm 2.8-4.0. Between Olympus and lumix there is just a vast choice of high quality glass. And it’s small size and weight is a great plus as well
I came back to this video, and what you said about the Sony A7IV (if my life depended on it) summed up my current "challenge." I've got two bodies: Fuji X-T5 (fun), Sony A7iii (dependable). I'm a hobbyist. If I wanted ONE body, I'm at a loss. Would the Nikon Zf be the answer? (Side issue: I'm in love with vintage lenses, so adaptability is an issue.) I shoot street, travel, some candid portraits.
Nice to recognise some Australian places in your videos. The Blowhole at Kiama, plus one of my favourite photography spots ever is Bombo Quarry, also at Kiama, New South Wales. I'm from Canberra. Great video content too.
I just did a "Best Cameras Under a Grand Video" and my goodness did this put it to shame 😂 hats off to you for being so thorough man. An inspiration to say the least!
Thanks for the great comparison and adding comments that make the comparisons easy to understand. It would have been nice to include lens costs in the comparison : 50-45 equivalent and medium zoom. No matter what camera you pick the lenses are key to image quality so their cost is also part of the budget calculations. Thanks again for your thoughtful comments
Outstanding! I’m going to have to watch this multiple times but I would have liked to see u break it down between pure photos and strictly video use. I know that’s nit picking but I could care less about the video so seeing ur recommendations up and down the $ line for photo shooters would have been very useful. Thank u for always sharing so much knowledge. I appreciate u so much ❤
Wow Mark, one of the absolutely best camera recommendation videos made. Very practical on the why for each camera and not brand centric. Lots to think about for next purchase and your approach to decision making for all future purchases, new or used. Very well done 🙌🙌
Thank you so much for this video!! It's concise, tells pros and cons, offers different solutions per price range, and features newer and older cameras which is something I really appreciate. Just bought my first camera and the information your provided really helped. :D
I’m buying the Sony a6700 next week! Rather have that above any full frame camera in the ‘under $1500’. I used one for over a week recently, a friend of mine owns it and allowed me to try it for a bit over a week, and this thing is a beast both for photography and even better for video! It goes well against many full frame cameras and from what I have experienced it sometimes does even better! You can’t go wrong with this little beast! I recommend it!
Mark, what cheap/affordable combo camera-lens would you recommend for mountain photography? Something little, as light as possible (to fit in my backpack), useful in cold conditions, with good image quality for still photography (I'm not really interested in video). I will appreciate your recommendations. Thank you!!
Thanks for giving honest, experience-based opinions! It helped clinch a decision for me. I was playing with a hand-me-down Pana GH1 and like how an MFT rig complements my APS-C Canon setup. So I was considering the Pana GH5 II or Oly E-M1 mk3. I want a great stills and fast autofocus, and don't care about video at all. No other reviewer states so plainly that the Pana GH sensors aren't as good for stills as comparably priced alternatives. As soon as you said it, I realized that's exactly how I've been feeling about the GH1 (even when considering its age). Long story short, the Oly arrived 2 days ago and I'm loving it.
@@markwiemels I put it through its paces at a vintage hearse show today. The Oly sensor has wonderfully natural color pickup, and the autofocus is lightning fast and accurate. Again, thanks for the honest and unbiased info.
What a great video. Really well done. Yes, we all have our own opinions, it was great to hear yours. Sony a7 shooter, recently checked out Lumix in a store, you and your daughter were spot on. As soon as I put it in my hands and took a few shots, it felt really good. Keep up the great work.
How a tool feels can be really important. As Mark mentioned, if it inspires us to get out and play, that's valuable. Personally, I started with Canon, and when shopping for my first DSLR, I picked up a few comparable cameras and realized that the Nikon just "felt right." So I did. Several cameras later, my guide is still what whispers to my hands "take me out there, let's adventure!" The Lumix GX85 is my jacket-pocket camera and always a delight. Pardon me, my DSLR is dragging me o...
@@j_taylor Couldn't agree more with you. I sold my Ricoh GR3, it just didn't feel good in my hands. I rarely used it. I actually really like the older canons and nikons. Even though they are bulkier, ergonomically they were better designed than my A7 for sure. Some cameras look good and retro but feel terrible in your hands.
Awesome comparison ! I was very much into photography between 2014 and 2020 and I've heard of pretty much all of them on TH-cam, but never got such a comprehensive comparison. Being myself a previous Canon owner (EOS 600D and 60D) before switching to Fuji (started with the X-T10, which was my gateway drug to Fuji, then the X-T20, X-H1, and finally X-T3, which is my last owned camera), I'm super happy to see the X-T1,2,3 in your list. These cameras truly have something special to them, and it's a bloody shame Fuji has discontinued them, especially with the 2nd hand market scalpers going ham on Fujifilm cameras since their surprise hit with the X100V. Thank you for putting up such a detailed video, it's very refreshing to see someone who not only actually owned all of them, so has a lot of personal experience with them, but also going at it in a very down to earth way, and nothing sensationalist nor overly clickbaity negative (unlike this buffoon who's piling up on Fuji's lack of autofocus as if we were back in 2017 and building his whole channel around it... poor lad's viewers ratings dropped as fast as it artifically built up around a known issue for the past decade, and it just shows how authenticity truly is the most precious currency of our decade, as you've expertly demonstrated, so cheers to you).
What an amazing video, I didn’t have a massive idea about what sort of camera to buy / which one I really wanted. This review sold me on the Sony A7 IV, will be a good hybrid. Thanks for the informative video !
Hi Mark, fantastic video and your recommendations are spot on. I think we needed another category of $4,000 and below for which Sony A7RV, Nikon Z8 and Canon R5 would have been the candidates. Although I think the A7RV goes into the Fuji GFX 100s territory with its image quality. I own Sony A7RIVa and chose it over the GFX 100s for price and also availability of tons of lenses for it. No regrets with the Sony but still wanting a GFX 100!!!
question if I found a r6 and r8 for basically the same price, same condition, same shutter count. And I shoot mainly sports photography and cars. Which would should I go for.?! the r8 is only 100 bucks cheaper.
The IBIS of the R6 would be nice, but I would do some research and pick based on the autofocus performance. Hopfully there are some videos with some insight.
Good review (I can't get on board with Canon - at all because - reasons I think) .. I have my eye on the Sony A6700 to shrink my load a little (I've used Canon, Nikon, and Minolta in the past), but the last hand full of years it has all been Pentax (K100D Super, K10D, K-3 ii, K-1 ii and now K-3 iii). I keep my bodies current with Pentax, but use all my old lenses all the time. Sony A6700 seems to always catch my attention (the A7C is also sexy - but lenses)..
Love the video and the great explanations of the cameras but the prices are way off. I understand the video is a few months old but prices are much higher than you've stated
Mark, I have been following your channel for a couple years. You are the reason I bought an M6 Mk II (bravo to u and to Canon). this is a superb vid. I hope it doesn't get ignored because of its length by the folks with short attention spans. Really nice work here.
What's going on Mark, looking for a starter camera been looking at the Sony a5100, Sony nex6 and I recently came across Sony a6000 for 250 wanted your input since I came across your video
i am looking for a camera for fishing...smartphone pics are not enough, i miss the color depth and the brilliance, i had an RX10 M3 and the fotos were so good but the focus was shit sometimes and the RX10 M4 is to expensive...Fuji x-m5 or Alpha 6400 under 1000, any idea...i need it for pictures only
I have been a lumix shooter for the past 11 years . the quality and range of the Lumix line - up has vastly improved over those 11 years .... as has the quality of my photography. zen billings
Which one is the best one for family travel between canon r8, sony a7c and fujifilm xs20? My budget for the camera and the lens is under $2500 which one you recommended?
lol, buy r50 and some good lenses, don't spend that amount for family shooting. It is not that big difference at all, only professionals need that kid of stuff
I just got into the Olympus and micro4/3 system. Good value for the money. Perhaps because it is so unique, just a few complaints regarding the complicated menu system? Regarding the Canon m50, it seems it was the last camera from Canon before they started raising prices on new models while taking things away, EVF etc,
I love my m5iii, smaller than m1 (same sensor as m1ii) got it refurbished and it holds up really well with pdaf ibis weather sealing and works great with my pro lenses (12-45mm f4 and 20mm f1.4) that I got also used, image stabilization is good enough for video to make it a viable hybrid as well
I’ve been thinking about getting into Olympus for more compact and travel photography. I shoot a Sony A9 but what would you recommend for me to look at?
" Perhaps because it is so unique, just a few complaints regarding the complicated menu system?" I found that a bit confusing before the penny dropped - the menu system throws up things related to the mode selected, and greys a lot of stuff out. I wondered what thd feck was going on before I twigged. Now, I just select the mode and get used to it, before going on to another one, if necessary. It can be really well customised to your own preferences anyway, and there are some things I've just got used to from having Canons early on. Since then, I've tried to make the layout resemble The Canon Way, if possible. I'm quite pleased with the IBIS system, I think it does at least as good a job as the Pentax ones of the late 00s. So far, I'm not missing the real estate of a full-frame, if I really want that I can take out one of the others (D600 or 5Dii).
Great video Mark, Thank you! I want to add my thoughts about some of your recommendations: - Canon M50: An amazing camera, really my first love that I had to sell in order to fund my trip to Japan (sadly). I just want to say that in my experience, the 4k video of this camera beats even some high end phones. So if you are on a budget and can adjust to the loss of AF and the crop, you can do a lot with it in video! - Fujifilm X-T2: So I went to Japan and from my budget I was able to hunt it down under $600 USD. The mechanical shutter sound is the absulte best I have heard in real life! It performed amazingly well with the XF 16-80mm F4 R WR OIS lens. Coming from an X-T5 I thought I would struggle again without IBIS but really had no issue, the OIS allowed me to get decent shots in moderate low light! Also records in 4K 24fps which I was super happy with. And tbh, the dials experience with Fuji can be really fast once you get used to it! Keep up the good work man!
Shutter sound is not something I considered before, but now you've got me thinking. There is something satisfying about the shutter in my old Canon SLRs. The silent shutter on the Olympus XA is marvelous for discreet street photos. The Nikon D700 shutter sounds like I'm reloading a bolt action rifle. What kind of shutter sound do you prefer, and why?
I have a Sony a6400 which i bought when it came out in 2019. Ive never really enjoyed using it and the feel of the images i get just isnt the same as my old Nikon D5600. I bought the Sony because it was lighter and i thought it was a great upgrade. But its not for me, and ive hardly been out in 5 years. Id like to go back to Nikon any advice on a good mid range alternative?
Not sure which camera I should get, between canon R7 and R8. I see you prefer more the R8 in this video,I would love to hear more opinions from people that have one of these cameras.
Excellent work! I am looking for a way to replace my R8. I love the R8 so much, but RF lenses drive me to trouble on budget. Thinking about the A7C or Nikon Z6ii used on Market Place. Thank you!
Did I miss the R6 Mark II. Why would it be left out? 40fps electronic with minimal rolling shutter, the same sensor as the r8 you praised, and basically the same Advanced AI focus of the R3.
I keep dipping back into this video. Some great cameras and useful analysis. The viewers comments also add nuance and choices to the list. I couldn't believe the olympus OM-1 mk1 was sub £300, but it is in excellent; £234 in good. So it's cheaper than an a6000! Dipping into a few of the original reviews it seems it's more of a stills camera by modern standards, which is slightly ironic given the ibis. The 1080/30 limit fits with it's launch year (as with early Sony) but dpreview seemed very sad on video image quality. Was that an outlier review or did firmware fix it? Thoughts everyone? Edit: took some digging as 2013-ish reviews talked about video and outputs a lot less than now. The weak spot of the EM-1 MK1 for modern usage is that it's only got *hdmi out during playback*. It's not even stuck with dirty hdmi, so that's likely a big part of why it's fallen to the budget bin. On the flip side, photographers can use the camera via usb2 in a tethered mode using an olympus application and theres wifi functionality too! So it remains a brilliant stills tool.
I was actually surprised how good the 1080 footage was. 1080 is getting pretty low resolution by modern standards, but the image still looked very good.
Never thought I ever would, but I bought the Lumix S5II. Incredibly impressed. I got it at a excellent price with the 20-60m lens. I ended up getting it based on the glass for the camera and the level of affordability--just like the camera. Plus Panasonic's persistent firmware updates. Only wish was that the S5II had a higher megapixel count for reframing, but still not a deal breaker since the photos and videos out if it look beautiful. Hopefully with the firmware updates AF gets better with tracking like sony & canon, but it doesn't seem far behind.
I love my canon R7! Got it for pro-features at an aps-c price and the quality is more than enough for what I do. And I never thought I’d be a brand loyalist but canon got me with their M50 and I’ve been firmly planted in the canon camp even through their short comings and weird decisions 😅 also the footage of the 50k celebration cake was lovely. So nice to see how your family supports you 🤎 Great video as always.
If doing lots of pro videos but also depending on pro photo capability (indoor sports in smaller rooms) is the S5ii x really an option? All commercial / vlogging work
Hey, great video! But I think you're overlooking some of the newer MFT cameras. The points you make about APS-C vs. FF also apply to MFT, and you actually get even better size-price benefits with MFT lenses. In terms of image quality, MFT and APS-C are pretty similar unless you're into astrophotography-then, yeah, you'd probably want to go full-frame rahter than APSC.
Hi Mark, in 26:28 you mention that the Canon R8 body is weather sealed? Are you certain on this? I have one and so far I was trying to protect it even against the softest rain. Not to mention, that I don't have the pro canon lenses.
Not familiar with that camera, but you're right that a weather sealed camera is still vulnerable at the lens mount. My weather sealed lenses include a rubber gasket at the mount.
How big is the gap between the GH5 and the ZV-E10 when it comes to video? They’re around the same price (500 USD) where I’m at (GH5 with a 12-35 and the ZV-E10 without a lens) but I’m not sure if 10 bit is worth over having E mount and Sony autofocus.
Hi, great video! My exactly 10 year old t5i had its SD slot break (spring?) so I figure it’s cheaper/better to update my camera. After buying my t5i (crop sensor) I had my eye on a 6d because I kept reading full frame is better. Well now I see there is a 6d markii so that’s what I’m considering but now I’m seeing more about the r50. What should I do? Stay with a crop and do the r50 or do the 6d mark ii? I do portrait, lifestyle, landscape etc photography. I can find a new 6d mark ii for under $1,000 and I don’t want to go over that. Is full frame that much better? @@markwiemels cool. The M11 is used for everything except sports. I learned to shoot on the M10 so all the auto stuff makes it actually harder for me, like autofocus. When M12 comes out I’ll buy it without even looking at the specs, I simply love the Leica ecosystem. Thansk for the video.
Great video - if you like the Olympus E-M1, you should definitely check out the Mark II version. It's one of those massive leap updates, and still a super reasonably priced camera used. And the E-M1X is a monster for sports shooting.
I don't have a clear answer for you. For low light and autofocus, yes, the R8 is better, but the GH 5 has IBIS, open gate, and other great video specific features.
Thats a valid option for sure. H1 is so underrated. I would pick based on IBIS, size, and form factor, to choose between the two, for what works for you. I owned an H1 and loved it.

Sorry, missed responding to this. Got lucky with an eBay auction. Made an offer 25% below Buy It Now price and seller accepted. I was stunned, but grateful!
Olympus EM-10s are one of the best budget small cameras. Been using one since 2014. I considered the Canon M50 but not having IBIS was a dealbreaker.
Finally, someone objective. Clear and precise. Thank you very much.
So kind of you, thanks.
Exactly. Good work young man ❤
Just bought the OM-D EM-M1 I in silver and almost new condition of €150. Everything included except for the packaging. Really nice to handle and the images are still stunning. So far, everything is working well for an already used with 9000 shutter count. This E-M1 along with my €95 PEN E-P3 are my EDC combo.
hey mate where did you manage to find this deal ? Are you from U.S.A ?
@@odyssey24 I bought an EMD1Mii for $400. It has PDAF. Great IBIS and built quality. Very nice colors. Limited video features. The 12-40 pro lens lives on this body. Dollar for dollar maybe the best value.
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Got myself Lumix S5IIX and oh my the image quality, the features, the IBIS, video modes and most importantly Active Cooling with heat sink was the best one for me as I mostly shoot outdoors in Florida. I’m so happy I went with this bad boy and there’s no looking back now…superb built quality as well
My Canon M50 Mk2 is my workhorse for still photography. It's a great piece of kit for my budget.
Love mine.
Got a 12mm f2 Walimex pro
18mm f2 fuji
55-200mm fuji
I then use an M42 adapter for
A hoya 49mm f1.8
A helios 44-2
A tokina 100-300 f5.6
And a tair 300mm f4.5
Plus 83.5 mm of extension tubes
Had the lot for ten years and it still smashes out incredible images.
"none flown me to an exotic destination"...subscribed
And nikon camera ? Like z50 which is an insane value, or even like z5... And the z6 iii or z8 ?
This. A Z6 can be had for dirt cheap indeed (I had mine in good condition for 500e). The autofocus isn't perfect in low light condition but for a stabilized FF camera with excellent ergonomics, it's completely unmatched at this pricepoint!
Was looking for this comment. Own a z50 and love it.
@@jolansb I saw Panasonic G9 for 400 euros which is hard to beat
@@jolansbyeah, when you’re looking at crop sensor cameras with prices that approach full frame, it makes zero sense. Just get the entry level FF instead.
Z5?? why use full frame if it cant shoot 4K 60p 😂
As someone who is starting to look into photography, this is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
I agree but I’ll take my xt5 simply over battery usage
Very kind, thank you.
See camera sensors exposed like that always gives me chills. Great video . Very informative. I’ve got a Sony Fx30 and LUMIX GH4 I run for most shoots . Both are built into cinema rigs .
This video just confirmed that I need to save for a Lumix s5II
I would add the Canon RP in the under $600 category. Canon USA has them regularly on sale "factory refurbished" for $599.
Seems to have very poor dynamic range at lower to mid ISO range. Around 2 full stops worse than some APSC cameras even. Might not matter too much but worth knowing before buying.
I'm no pro but I honestly pick up my M50 before I pick up my RP..probably just gunna end up selling it down the line
@@ivannachoothis is the same use case for me and am quite happy with my RP also.
@@ivannachoo I agree. It’s a lot of camera at that price.
Great video as always Mark, I have never even considered Olympus, and after your first recomendation of the EM-1 spent some hours learning about Olympus and I think it will be my choice of new camera, searching for a deal on E-M1 Mk III now. Congrats on the video!
Great choice. It’s a wonderful camera. The 12-100 f4 is a great do it all lens
And it’s small size and weight is a great plus as well
Nice video! I'm glad you included the ZF as an honorable mention. While it may not be the perfect camera for every user, it's still a great one!
The more I use the ZF the more I love it. I think that could be your camera, but you will probably just end up owing 3 cameras then.
@@markwiemels - I hate that you're probably VERY right. :)

Nice to recognise some Australian places in your videos. The Blowhole at Kiama, plus one of my favourite photography spots ever is Bombo Quarry, also at Kiama, New South Wales. I'm from Canberra. Great video content too.
Mark, have you ever had to control the high heat problem in Canon Cameras? One way is to install thermal pads. Ever had an experience with this?

Thanks for the great comparison and adding comments that make the comparisons easy to understand. It would have been nice to include lens costs in the comparison : 50-45 equivalent and medium zoom. No matter what camera you pick the lenses are key to image quality so their cost is also part of the budget calculations. Thanks again for your thoughtful comments
My recommended photography camera list: E-M5 mk1 & mk2, E-M10 mk2, X-T2, A7RIII. These are the cameras I will never sell.
What about a7iii he didn't mention it in the video i think
What about olympus e10 mk3 ?
The Oly will give you better colors (in my opinion) and better autofocus, that was 100% the right decision for a photo shooter only.
@@markwiemels I put it through its paces at a vintage hearse show today. The Oly sensor has wonderfully natural color pickup, and the autofocus is lightning fast and accurate.
Again, thanks for the honest and unbiased info.
if i want to take photos in disco, pubs, also while dancing, what mirrorless camera should I buy?
What a great video. Really well done. Yes, we all have our own opinions, it was great to hear yours. Sony a7 shooter, recently checked out Lumix in a store, you and your daughter were spot on. As soon as I put it in my hands and took a few shots, it felt really good. Keep up the great work.
Thanks!
How a tool feels can be really important.
As Mark mentioned, if it inspires us to get out and play, that's valuable.
Personally, I started with Canon, and when shopping for my first DSLR, I picked up a few comparable cameras and realized that the Nikon just "felt right." So I did. Several cameras later, my guide is still what whispers to my hands "take me out there, let's adventure!"
The Lumix GX85 is my jacket-pocket camera and always a delight.
Thank you for your time and efforts... I miss this type of vids from other TH-camrs
When talking about the Sony ZV E10 was that the mark 1 or the Mark 2? The Mark 2 comes just under 1000 bucks. Is it a good camera?
What an amazing video, I didn’t have a massive idea about what sort of camera to buy / which one I really wanted. This review sold me on the Sony A7 IV, will be a good hybrid. Thanks for the informative video !
You a pro? You spent a lot of money to take pics of your dog, if not 🤪
Hi Mark, fantastic video and your recommendations are spot on.
„No regrets with the Sony but still wanting a GFX 100!!!“….😁
question if I found a r6 and r8 for basically the same price, same condition, same shutter count.

What is with the sony a6400 with the sigma 18-50mm f.2.8?
What’s the best camera for shooting a music videos
" Perhaps because it is so unique, just a few complaints regarding the complicated menu system?"
I found that a bit confusing before the penny dropped - the menu system throws up things related to the mode selected, and greys a lot of stuff out.
I want to add my thoughts about some of your recommendations:
- Canon M50: An amazing camera, really my first love that I had to sell in order to fund my trip to Japan (sadly).
Is the RF50mm F1.8 STM compatible with the Canon r50 ? Because the two lenses that you have mentioned are expensive.
Yes
I have a Sony a6400 which i bought when it came out in 2019. Ive never really enjoyed using it and the feel of the images i get just isnt the same as my old Nikon D5600.
I bought the Sony because it was lighter and i thought it was a great upgrade. But its not for me, and ive hardly been out in 5 years.
Id like to go back to Nikon any advice on a good mid range alternative?
What would be the best, anything under 600, for just photos? I dont knowwhat to get
Still using my canon eos 100d. Works pretty fine for travelling. Pretty old but also good for beginners (like me) especially for the price imo.
Hi Mark,
Big fan of your videos. Can you recommend a camera and 150-600mm lens under $500 each for wildlife photography.
Not sure which camera I should get, between canon R7 and R8. I see you prefer more the R8 in this video,I would love to hear more opinions from people that have one of these cameras.
Olympus om de m1 or fujifilm xm1?
Newbie question but these vs go pro or Dji action?
Why not sony a6100 or a6400 is in the list.
I was planning on buying a6100 any other better option in same budget?
One of the best videos I've seen on TH-cam. Thanks a lot, Mark!
Thoughts on a Sony A7 II in the $500 range?
very interested in the hand grap of nikon ZF !! where i can get them?
Never thought I ever would, but I bought the Lumix S5II. Incredibly impressed. I got it at a excellent price with the 20-60m lens. I ended up getting it based on the glass for the camera and the level of affordability--just like the camera. Plus Panasonic's persistent firmware updates. Only wish was that the S5II had a higher megapixel count for reframing, but still not a deal breaker since the photos and videos out if it look beautiful. Hopefully with the firmware updates AF gets better with tracking like sony & canon, but it doesn't seem far behind.
You will be very happy. I use my S5II a lot, the recent firmwares have added a lot too, autofocus is very good now too.
question, im looking for on the used market so what are my key takeaways from this video
Subscribed. What a down to earth no BS no drama fact based video.
Me too!! The ibis is a huge pro also
If doing lots of pro videos but also depending on pro photo capability (indoor sports in smaller rooms) is the S5ii x really an option? All commercial / vlogging work
Hey, great video! But I think you're overlooking some of the newer MFT cameras. The points you make about APS-C vs. FF also apply to MFT, and you actually get even better size-price benefits with MFT lenses. In terms of image quality, MFT and APS-C are pretty similar unless you're into astrophotography-then, yeah, you'd probably want to go full-frame rahter than APSC.
Absolutely agree with you
Do you think the Sony7Cii is on par with the RIV for vlogs/podcast artist photo shoots?
Hi Mark, in 26:28 you mention that the Canon R8 body is weather sealed? Are you certain on this? I have one and so far I was trying to protect it even against the softest rain. Not to mention, that I don't have the pro canon lenses.
Not familiar with that camera, but you're right that a weather sealed camera is still vulnerable at the lens mount. My weather sealed lenses include a rubber gasket at the mount.
You’d be vulnerable without L series to the exception of the new 28-70 2.8, which is weather sealed but not technically an L series
Wow, I so enjoyed your elicidation of all these cameras. Immediately subscribed. Thank you!
I did the same. So many things to consider when looking to upgrade from a Canon eos20D. Feeling overwhelmed.
@@gabycarcamo5250 So after you mentioned the X-H1, yeah, that camera is a bargain at the moment! So I just bought one inspired by you comment, video to come. It's the best value used Fuji you can buy, has flown totally under the radar. (wasn't on my radar) Heads Up - buy it before my video comes out :-) Will likely be 3-6 weeks.
You seem to be very vast with cameras. I am originally a canon guy and done some great pictures with a number s of lenses withe the 50mm, 45 f 1.2.8, 18-135mm, but currently struggling to adapt to the 85mm 1.1.2 ii. Any advice on how to not get blurry and out of focus pictures?
