Agreed. As someone who is from Asia, 2000 USD or even 1600 is not something that we can spend easily. He is so far, the only guy who has this approach when it comes to cameras.
"Lower End" is rather relative. These are two awesome camera - they both take great pictures and come loaded with features that didn't exist only a few years ago.
The only guy I've found on freaking TH-cam that seems to recognize not everyone has $2000 to drop on a new camera. I have been waiting for this video comparison for so long, and while I have used both cameras, I still struggled to figure out which one I wanted; however, my results were similar. Canon EOS RP has quicker autofocus, and less noise albeit less dynamic range. It also feels much more comfy in the hand.
Watched a video of a youtuber - and I am not hating on him, which is why I don't write up his name - and he was like "The most important thing is to go out and make fotos, the camera is not important at all.". Meanwhile he was taking pictures with a € 3000,- Camera ^^. I mean I understand that they want to encourage people not to stop, just because they do not have top gear, but come on, at one point, you want your photos to look better and it is only so far, some cameras can go. I took some shots, which were looking good on the small screen of the camera, but when I looked at them on my PC, I nearly lost my mind because of all the noise on them, they were ruined. So yeah, but still, the youtubers are all helping a lot, very motivating people and very ambitious to help others, I like that a lot.
@@natbrownizzle3815 Well, I don't know the youtuber you are talking of, so it's not a direct response on him and his Gear. I guess the cost of his equipment is not the point as far as he shoot it and it brings out good results. I could bring you the example of @Noealz, which has recently acquired a medium format fuji, but keeps telling "whatever you have is good enough", and I belive he's honest in telling that. Sometime your equipment fails and you have to replace it: we must not judge what someone gets as far as it does not become a "fetish purchase"; everyone is free to spend the money they earn as they see fit. He's been using an X100 original for a long time, then he gifted it to one of his students in Seul, then used an X-pro original with vintage Lenses. For paid jobs (usually timelapses) he's been using a 5D MkIII, buit it was so battered and damaged that he had to replace it. Same with is infrared converted camera, which failed. The guy also used a Iphone 7 for almost 6 months for his own streaming and night picture to prove the point that "you can use what you have". Many people are into "vintage lenses and go to great extent to get some particular glass, but' that's not because they think they'll get better images, but rather for collecting purposes: I got my RP 2 days ago, because I wanted a FF sensor for my vintage lenses, but I could not focus them reliably with my "inherited" 5D MkII. Is it the best camera? No. Does it matters? it does not, because it takes good pictures and solved me a problem I had. My best image was taken win an e-PL6 and a kit lens: I wish I'll get something as good with this FF!
@@Leptospirosi The thing is, and I thing this would need it's own blog, but anyhow I'll try this anyway. The thing is, I just got started and like anyone who just starts with anything, there is one thing that I lack and that thing is patience. I want to take great pictures, but I seem to not want to put the long time and hard work into it, learning about theory, about anything there is, which takes time and of course patience. I get what you are saiyng and I try to look at the way I said things to. There are great photographers who can take amazing pictures with let's be hones, shit and good for nothing cameras, but I am not a great photographer so I think I make the mistake every rookie makes, which is to believe that it is the Jordans who will make me play better ball and not myself learning the fundamentals first. Thanks for the comment, I will go on an shoot pictures with my MFT Sensor and when I will have a FF sensor I will work with that too and if any starter reads this, brother, sister, take your time, be patient and enjoy the beauty of it, becaus it is just worth it.
Just wanted to say you are one of the few (Or in my case, the only one) who speaks more sense when it comes to purchasing. As the others had pointed out here, not everyone can justify the pricing of the newer cameras out there, more so with the current situation that the world is into (COVID). All the best to you Sir.
Just sold my A7II, and I'm still crying. That little guy got my business started, and handled everything I threw at it just fine. If you are happy with 5fps continuous, and 1080p video, the A7II is still a beast.
My copy of a7II produced heavy moire pattern/distortion on the video. I sent my copy to the official Sony repair centre in Australia in 2015 and the response I got back was that I should have purchased a camcorder model such as FDR-AX700 or PWX-X70 if I wanted to focus on videography. The official Sony repair centre offered me a 40% discount voucher for my next purchase which meant that they acknowledged the issue but couldn't really do anything about the specific product. I am using the RP now and I am extremely satisfied with the quality of the video that comes out of it in terms of the distortion, the colour, and the CODEC and format it uses.
Whenever I need a comparison video and I come to YT to search for results, I end picking your videos first. Thanks a lot for such easy and short honest reviews!
Love my Sony A7 II! It gets slack now because of how good modern eye AF is, but it is a fantastic entrance to a full frame Sony system along with the glass options
I have had my Sony A7rii for quite awhile and have yet to justify upgrading it-just kept investing in great glass. It’s a BEAST and shoots gorgeous video!
The target audience for these cameras may also shoot primarily jpegs, and that’s a huge win for Canon there. The RP jpeg engine produce beautiful colors in almost every situation while the A7 II struggles with white balance issues, terrible skin tones and unnatural colors.
I worked with an A7II for 2 years back in the days, the A7II autofocus is good only in the middle of the frame and there is a setting to enable the viewing of such area. Also its video was very bad and moiry, the a6300 kicked it out of the water at any mode. What I recommend to a newcomer is to get the A7 Mk1 to save up or the Mk3 for a good performing camera, also does the RP really have such bad battery life? the A7II required me to carry 5 extra batteries in winter, with the new A7III 1 battery = 6 intense hours
I use the RP for events and wedding and it sometimes worked with a single battery for the whole day. But it heavily depends on how you use it. Switching to eco mode will turn if the displays only Andre seconds after you stopped using it (and turn everything back on the moment you press a button) this will save a huge amount plus only using the viewfinder will also increase battery life. I would say around 800 pictures are possible on a single charge. I am currently using 3 batteries just to make sure but in general only need 2 when it comes down to a full wedding shoot
@@fadi_lee 6400 makes much better videos. Better White balance, Better colors, better low light (that 6K4K Is astonishing) get the sigma 16 1.4 and learn a Gimbal and it's beastly
I scored my canon eos rt5 for 300 bucks at a pawn shop and it came with the standard 50mm lens and a 200mm lens. Risky but it was basically brand new and 10k pictures later I'm still happy with it. Now I'm interested in sony cameras and I'm excited to find something good for a decent price, but I don't know if I'll be so lucky this time.
I own a7iii+ several 900+ lenses and i'm really happy of the results... But if i was short on budget I would certainly go for canon rp + adpter for ef lenses, and buy 35F2 / 50F1.8Stm / 85f1.8 used. Another great camera to consider i the 5DmarkIII, with maximum 100.000 actuation.
@Derpimuss as an A7II user wanted to switch to RP for its AF and better low light performance, I can say this... A7II is an amazing camera if you are not taking photos of a moving objects (eg. children) in kind of low light (typically indoor) situation. But even in a good light and with a decent zeiss lens this AF sucks and you really cannot rely on it... when it hits its great but mostlybit doesn't, and i learned it the hard way :( So, stills on travel, landscape and any situation where AF is not an must (eg. you have the time and can manually adjust if needed) take A7II and it works as charm with sigma MC11, but if you want to rely on AF only RP (from the two) Oh, and one more thing... if you don't need FF low light performance A6400 as an overall package with world leadingAF (in this price range) is the best of the best (haha to ad more confusion). Cheers

Old video and the comment is late, but one thing that I'd like to add is that Sony's A7 II was the first mirrorless fullframe to have 5-axis in-body stabilization, which for low light portraits, street and landscape gives you a great advantage of not having to use a tripod, even on lenses that don't have OSS / IS. This was my deciding factor when I was choosing for my full frame (RP vs 7II) and before picking up the Sony, I was a Canon user with two cameras (EOS 550D/Rebel T2i and EOS M100) for 11 years (and I still have those cameras today together with the Sony)
I use Sony A7 II and mostly adapted with old manual lenses. It can be setup magnificent for focusing. Can the the Canon Eos RP do the similar way? Thanks!
Which one do you recommend for taking portraits of fast-moving toddlers? At first I thought RP due to the auto-focus being better, but the A7ii performed better when you did the frame rate test.
Owned both of these cameras, the Sony A7 II had the edge in dynamic range, low light ISO, but the rp is way easier to use. Lenses are also much cheaper on canon.
I was on the market for a sub 2000$ camera when i recognized, that buying a good camera as a beginner it might be an overkill. And when you are good enough for the camera, you want a newer body. Because I like the Sony lens options, i bought the a7 MK1 with the 28-70 kit lens for 350$. You would be surprised what this camera is capable of. All lenses that I might buy in the future are still usable with an better Sony body.
A7II dose it too but the idea is to not blind the person you are trying to photograph with this light, and when this comes to play RP is much better in AF under low light conditions... sony A7II sucks... really...
I found out just a few weeks ago (8/2023) that the 4k on the RP is a good option if (1) you can go wide enough and (2) you do not need fast reliable AF, but only sloooow reliable focus on slooooow moving subjects. Using the EF 4 16-35 L IS I like to have Ultrawide for FullHD which can be used in 4k projects but I also have a ~28...60mm equiv lens for 4k with rich detail. So I postponed to replace the RP and work with it alongside the R7 (with EF 100-400 ii, a gorgeous lens). EDIT: By the way: Good video, just three years later!
Well what can I say? I use a Sony A7II to photo live play dress-rehearsals. Low light (I must not use a flash for obvious reasons) and the actors on stage are moving about. Sometimes the focus is wildly blind but I touch the shutter release and the focus is quickly back in line. I've never missed a shot. The pictures are pin sharp, clear of noise and do not need editing. Yes, there are better (£1000+) cameras out there but the Sony A7II seems to perform extremely well at what it performs worst at.
I bought a Canon RP six months ago and quickly regretted it due to frequent autofocusing problems with RF and EF lenses. Users are also reporting AF issues with Sigma lenses. My first Canon camera was the A1 back in the early 80s. 40 years later (and many more Canon cameras), I'm now considering a switch to Sony or Nikon.
The A7II is only suitable for low-motion photography, I think, many people ignore it because of this limitation, especially when they find the focusing ability of the new generation cameras so great
Does not make sense since DSLR's from yesteryear were used for sports photography, and what about times before digital? Sports photographers still got good shots even if the hit ratio was less.
Canon is made in Japan. It was not all that long ago they ran the RP with lens for $999. Now that was an impressive price point. The lens is made in Taiwan. Canon menu system seems pretty good. Touch menus and touch for focus point - nice. I have too many cameras, but not a single FF one, so this is tempting. FF lenses diameter and weight still seem a little off-putting, but what the heck, overall weight is not terrible at all.
The a7ii is way more cheaper 2nd hand now, got mine for $600. and you forgot to mentioned that the a7ii has IBIS. while the RP does not have. great video btw.
Great comparison. Of the two I would definitely go for the RP. The A7 II is awesome for the price but from my experience it has TERRIBLE battery life :(
@@SolaSly Yes it does. I too have owned both; however, I prefer the Canon EOS RP for it's better ISO performance, faster autofocus, especially after firmware updates, better menu, and ergonomics.
I use RF and EF L lenses and RP makes great pictures still up to now. The only thing I think missing is animal AF since it tend to incorrect focus until I touch to correct. I am still debating going to 20mp R6 ...R6 has better dynamic range but I seldom shoot that far off range..5 stops? ... don't care about dual card slot cause I never need that to begin with...coming from shooting film. R5 is a over kill and the price is high as well...I rather spend on lens now since lens keep value long term. I will probably get R5 only a year or two from now when price drops on used market.
Well, I use a Canon 2000D ASP-C now for photos. I love it. I use mostly Vintage lenses. I want to be able to use the Canon FL 55mm f1.2 lens that I own. I want to use a camera for video as I will be shooting product demo videos to be used on TH-cam. I had not heard of the Canon EOS RP until now. I was leaning toward the A7ii. However, this video of yours has made me think. I do not and in fact hate any AUTO anything. I shot my band from 2000 to 2007 using a Sony PD150 DVCam and never used AUTO anything. I set up the shot first, then go with the settings. No "In/Out, In/Out, In/Out" BS for me. It is more of a distraction and irritates the viewer. So, I don't care about AUTO anything. Full Frame is attractive to me. 26.5mpix is not a step back from the Canon 2000D. The cost of either of these lenses is affordable. Am I missing anything?
I just had this decision to make today. I ended up choosing the 7 ii simply because the lenses were sooooooooo much more affordable. The RP body is a great price, but you'll find out fast you're about to shell out for glass. Might not matter to you. But for me it pushed me outside my budget.
I think it's the other way around. Older EF lenses work on Canon EOS RP through an adapter. And Canon has, like, an ocean of cheap-but-pretty-good lenses like 35 f2, 40 f2.8, 50 f1.8, 85 f1.8, etc.
Sony A7II also has IBIS which the R and RP lacks, even if its a first generation IBIS for A7 lineup, Sony has been doing IBIS in their cameras ever since they bought Minolta which pioneered IBIS systems for DSLR's.
It’s all about the lenses. Sony has full 3rd party support and a viable used market. Tamron has really nailed the value segment and others are available too. There are other benefits of the Sony like much better build and body controls and IBIS, but the Canon has touchscreen and better AF. It was a tough decision but a gently used A7ii came up for sale for a great price and the available lens options won me over.
@@MC-yk4wl I am. The camera does incredible in low light indoors with a few quirks. Works best in AF-S (single) but will work well in AF-C (continuous) if you disable the view simulation. The inexpensive Sony 50mm is a but slow to focus but almost every other lens has been fantastic and fast. But, if I could afford it, I would for the A7Rii. It is basically the next gen and a better sensor. Plus much better AF. Rp has better video and better eye af than the A7ii but the A7Rii matches the RP and has a much, much better sensor.
@@jml7916 my experience is that when i shoot still objects, people etc. AF is ok but when i try to shoot eg. playing children AF accuracy is 50% maybe less :( Additionally i find AFS to hunt a lot. The best results i am able to achieve are when i use AFC , Flex spot tracking, but its not perfect and i really can't rely on it (i use zeiss 35 2.8) therefore im thinking of switching to RP (A7RII is out of my reach)
@@MC-yk4wl try disabling live view effect (or something like that) when using AF-C. I found that the camera would do an initial focus with Phase detect then stop the lens down and track in contrast detect to give the live view effect. It would hunt like mad. It really made flash photography a pain until I figured out what the camera was doing. By turning off live view effect it kept the lens wide open like a dslr and worked much better. I also discovered that eye AF only works in AF-S on the A7ii. The A7Rii (that’s 2 not 3) is only a few hundred more expensive than the RP and you get 42 Mp, much improved AF, eye detect in AF-C and twice as many PD points, and get to keep that sweet lens. The RP is also a noticeable step down in IQ where the R2 is a major step up. I can look up exactly what I disabled if you want.
Very useful video, thanks. I've been toying with trading in all my older e-mount gear for a cheap, older full frame camera and a couple of portrait primes, it's good to see the pros and cons of each camera laid out so clearly.
Make sure that you’re aware that the RP only has an EFCS instead of a fully mechanical shutter. To me it’s a pretty big factor. I talk about it in my eos rp videos. Thanks for the perspective!
Since I have a few L lenses with my old 5DMKii, I use the adapter as well for my RP. Do you find that the focusing became slower using the EF lenses on adaptor?
It's not the cost of the body....as much as the cost of RF lenses after canon has banned third party. I know there's the EF adapter, I own one and it's great. But there's now several neat sigma and Tamron lenses that will only be available for Sony and Nikon. So once everything is factored in, I feel like Sony might be a better long term investment. And that's coming from a canon guy who's never owned a Sony.
What's your opinion on buying a used Canon 6d for mainly video work? I need a second (proper) camera to go along with my Canon M50 for my drumcover videos on TH-cam. Atm I am using cheap old point & shoots cameras given to me by my family and it really is a pita to work with them...
In low light situation the IBIS of A7ii will help a lot, with unstabilized 85mm lens I can get sharp picture handheld at 1/20. Also the A7ii is much better weather sealed which RP totally lacks. These facts might be deciding factors for some people but it's a shame that you totally ignored it 😂
They're both technically weather sealed but to very low level. Unless you shoot in the waterfall you'll be fine with either camera. With or without the IBIS, I'd never shoot anything at 1/20 but that's what stabilized lenses are for lol
@@HyunRalphJeong But aren't stabilized lenses more expensive which for a budget comparison should be taking into configuration. Having one technically weather sealed and having on actually weather sealed is a bit different. Don't get me wrong I loved the video and am very glad you made it but IBIS is very helpful for alot of shooting styles and should definitely be considered. Also the Sony can shoot in S-LOG while the Canon cannot
comparing Sony and Canon is like comparing Android to iOS. (good hardware, a lot of feature and customisable vs ease of use). Sony (i had A7iii) get a lot of cool feature, but yeah, the color science isn't the best out of camera. But i can work it out in LightRoom. It takes a lot of my time though, correcting the color. For Canon, i'm happy with the picture i got straight from my EOS R (i'm ended with EOS R, not RP because the dynamic range isn't that good). But hey, you should try Sony A7C. Sony sure improved their color science in that camera.
Great idea comparing this models, great video! It would be cool if you compare the rumored upcoming full frame "budget" model of the Sony again with the RP!
Nice video really helped me out but i can't still decide between eos rp and fuji xt3, i like fuji controls and colours on the othwr hand canon ff line up future and rp bigger lens. I do street photography and 10 percent portraits. I would love to hear your opinion🙏🏻
Xt3 hands down. This rp is soo crippled, very bad at dynamic range, low light and even video which can only do 60fps in FHD and cropped 4K at 30fps. If you want the FF lens, then Maybe wait for few months to see what's the new entry level A5 for Sony. Or wait for the Z5 to be heavily discounted at $999.
I need to do still flat images with prime lenses (22 or 50 max). I tried to cut canon cause of the recent lenses news (they are cutting out the compatible brands). But for the price range I’m still falling on a second hand RP. Any hint for alternatives in 2023?
Thank you for the video and information. I have the Sony A7 ii and really like the image quality in good light. I definitely like the menu system in my Canons much better though.
Hyun Ralph Jeong You seem to be a well balanced and honest reviewer. I would be interested to know how you see the Z5 in the context of its specs and not what “influencers” see. Is this a good step for an entry full frame relative to its competition? What does an entry level full frame at this price (especially the rumored Sony “A5”) mean for APS-C. Just general interest. Thank you for your time and for responding.
@@HyunRalphJeong I would throughly enjoy this comparison too. I just subscribed today. I am so thankful you posted a detailed video comparison of these two cameras that I could not find on the internet anywhere.
Had reviewed both of them as well. And both are actually quite enjoyable to use, but the Sony A7II will feel outdated if directly compared to the Canon EOS RP. Other then that I agree with all your points in the video, great stuff man. There was a rumor that there will be a new Sony fullframe camera with similar price as the RP. But it is just a rumor :)
Yes, but if the rumors are true, unfortunately, it will have the same body as their APS-C line, and I much prefer the feel and aesthetics of their full frame lineup. Wish they would take this route instead.
everyone know canon was playing catch up for RP and R ... now R5 and R6 basically even the game. This is a price range comparison where money is assumed limiting factor...unless sony has a brand new camera at this price range you can suggest?
@@ayayoutuber I wont argue about how good R5 or R6 are. All I am saying is that in 2019, Canon presented a camera that was at the same level with a Sony 2014 camera! I am not trying to suggest anything to anyone, at this price range there are big compromises and everyone has to pick what they can "live" without. Personally, as an amateur who uses mainly MF and vintage lenses for landscape/nature/street photography, I am very happy with my choice so far!

Hi, I am a hobby pgotographer. I am thinking of upgrading to the RP from my heavy canon EOS 6D. I need something more portable. The main issue holding me back is the battery life stories I heard about. I tend to turn my cam off in between shots or situations either way, but was wondering if its a huge issue on the RP in reality. Also I take many night portrait shots using city lights, so being able to pull shadows etc. Would be nice, is the dynamic range decent enough?
Hello. The battery life is definitely worse than the 6D, but it's still quite manageable in my opinion. But if you want better dynamic range, I'd recommend the Canon R8. The RP isn't much of an upgrade from the 6D in that regard.
@@HyunRalphJeong Thanks for the reply! I'm still a bit on the fence since the R8 is a 900 euro jump I do not think I can afford haha. Appreciate your insights
This is THE video I’ve been looking for. I’m not a pro by any regard but want to up my quality of photos, yet I can’t afford to drop 2-3 grand on a camera! Think I’m going with the Canon and am very happy with it.
Hyun, I'm a Cannon t3 user and looking to upgrade. The new Cannon eos RP looks like a really nice camera. Although with the smaller body style once you add an external flash with a bigger lens how is it to hold and shoot in terms of balance. I'm new to your channel and having been a television cameraman which turned into photograph I excited to see your reviews.Thank you!!!
After a few reviews I would say the Z5 does not worth its price. The RP or A7 II seems slightly better. Getting the Z5 worth only if you already have a few FX lens. One thing is sure, don't even think of the Z50! That wouldn't be an upgrade compared to the D3400! Waste of money, don't do it man!!!
It’s really up to what lens you want to use. The RP and 90D are both good. The RP’s image quality will be slightly better but full frame lenses are much more expensive.
This is a very fair comparison, and one that many have been searching endlessly for that didn't exist until this guy graciously posted a video. You have to remember, Sony was the front-runner for many years in the mirrorless market, and some would argue still are at the top, including myself. It has taken other camera companies nearly 6yrs to catch-up with their offerings.
hey im deicing about an upgrade to full frame im looking at those cameras does canon has a sigma 50mm 1.4 for that body? i also thinking about the nikon z6 which would be better lets say Sony A7iii canon EOS RP or nikon Z6 idk is there are another canon on the same price range as the other two
If you're concerned about lens selection, I think the A7 III is still the best choice. The Sigma 50mm 1.4 is only available for the EF mount so you would need an adapter for the RP.
@@HyunRalphJeong yea ive heard its very good i thought there was a native sigma 50mm for sony already.. ? i kinda deciding between the sony A7iii and nikon z6. sony auto focus is faster. the screen on the z6 is better i kninda want it more for photos than videos they say nikon produces better RAW files with better dynamic range and its cheaper i could give it a try
Which one of these two has IBIS and if both of these don't have the feature then let me know what way does an inclusion of IBIS affect the performance of a mirrorless system including cost of lenses without OIS.
I want a full frame for bird photography. I can get great photos with my p950 and gx9 in decent light. But they lack on those gloomy English winter days. I don't want to spend the earth. Like £1200 max for the body and £1000 for the lens. I don't mind second hand. Any other options besides these? I really like the look of the rp. Seems to fit my low light requirement but I'm not sure about the lens selection and people seem down on it.
I would only get the eos because it’s newer. Just got an a7ii for 900 with kit lenz. For me that’s what it comes down to honestly. If I had the money tho, I would just get the a7iii
I have my R5/6 review coming but not until then end of September. I personally think 20mp is perfectly fine as I worked with 5D mark iii (22mp) for many years. With the sharp RF lenses, you probably won’t have any issues with resolution
The RP looks like an interesting camera, but until Canon brings out some primes that aren't bigger and heavier than the camera and cost less than two and a half times what the body costs, I'll be holding on to my money. Seriously, who are they selling $2,500 lenses to?

The thing is, and I thing this would need it's own blog, but anyhow I'll try this anyway.

Just sold my A7ii to upgrade on Canon RP, and it worth it!
You forgot to mention how each works with vintage/MF lens. Many people use these for this reason.

I am currently using 3 batteries just to make sure but in general only need 2 when it comes down to a full wedding shoot
so its not for video??

I scored my canon eos rt5 for 300 bucks at a pawn shop and it came with the standard 50mm lens and a 200mm lens. Risky but it was basically brand new and 10k pictures later I'm still happy with it. Now I'm interested in sony cameras and I'm excited to find something good for a decent price, but I don't know if I'll be so lucky this time.

You mean the AF for video, you don't need continuous auto focus when shooting photos lol
Did you change? if yes after experiencing both what is your feedback?

I own a A7ii and now use it for photography and I have to say it's a beast and easy to use, just get to know your camera. That's all.
In the lowlight AF, RP had one hell of an autofocus assist light.
A7II dose it too but the idea is to not blind the person you are trying to photograph with this light, and when this comes to play RP is much better in AF under low light conditions... sony A7II sucks... really...
I'd love to see a comparison of the RP and the 90D!
Joey Greenwood they are very different cameras but what would you like to know?
Nice comparison review. You really nailed the topic which a lot of people are searching for.
So disheartening to hear this
The A7II is only suitable for low-motion photography, I think, many people ignore it because of this limitation, especially when they find the focusing ability of the new generation cameras so great
Does not make sense since DSLR's from yesteryear were used for sports photography, and what about times before digital? Sports photographers still got good shots even if the hit ratio was less.
Canon is made in Japan. It was not all that long ago they ran the RP with lens for $999. Now that was an impressive price point. The lens is made in Taiwan. Canon menu system seems pretty good. Touch menus and touch for focus point - nice. I have too many cameras, but not a single FF one, so this is tempting. FF lenses diameter and weight still seem a little off-putting, but what the heck, overall weight is not terrible at all.
The a7ii is way more cheaper 2nd hand now, got mine for $600. and you forgot to mentioned that the a7ii has IBIS. while the RP does not have. great video btw.
what’s IBIS?

I use RF and EF L lenses and RP makes great pictures still up to now. The only thing I think missing is animal AF since it tend to incorrect focus until I touch to correct. I am still debating going to 20mp R6 ...R6 has better dynamic range but I seldom shoot that far off range..5 stops? ... don't care about dual card slot cause I never need that to begin with...coming from shooting film. R5 is a over kill and the price is high as well...I rather spend on lens now since lens keep value long term. I will probably get R5 only a year or two from now when price drops on used market.
did you get the R5
But for me it pushed me outside my budget.
you can get an adapter. But the sony is still an amazing camera
It was actually Olympus.
@@suchan1698
No, its Minolta in 2004, look up the Minolta Maxxum 7D I think it was called.
It’s all about the lenses. Sony has full 3rd party support and a viable used market. Tamron has really nailed the value segment and others are available too. There are other benefits of the Sony like much better build and body controls and IBIS, but the Canon has touchscreen and better AF. It was a tough decision but a gently used A7ii came up for sale for a great price and the available lens options won me over.
might go this direction as well thank u 🙏🏽
Are you happy with your decision... how do you find AF, especially in a low light (indoor) scenarios?
AF is ok but when i try to shoot eg. playing children AF accuracy is 50% maybe less :(
Additionally i find AFS to hunt a lot. The best results i am able to achieve are when i use AFC , Flex spot tracking, but its not perfect and i really can't rely on it (i use zeiss 35 2.8)
therefore im thinking of switching to RP (A7RII is out of my reach)
A7ii has IBIS right? Didn't mention that?
I did briefly mention it
what camera did you use to film this video ? thanks
Very useful video, thanks. I've been toying with trading in all my older e-mount gear for a cheap, older full frame camera and a couple of portrait primes, it's good to see the pros and cons of each camera laid out so clearly.
Sony A7ii can go up to ISO 51200 but JPG only. A7ii has IBIS, while RP has no IBIS. Nevertheless, good review.
dude I looked but couldn't find it, how do we activate it
@ ISO 51200 is quite difficult to get, you have to go in multishot mode simulating HDR. In single shot, top is ISO 25600.
Make sure that you’re aware that the RP only has an EFCS instead of a fully mechanical shutter. To me it’s a pretty big factor. I talk about it in my eos rp videos. Thanks for the perspective!

Amazing video as always! Bought me an RP with the RF 24-105 and EF adaptor for like $1600, best purchase i've made when it comes to Camera stuff.
I went with RP the adapter and will use it with my EF LENSES. EF is cheaper!!!
I have a bunch of EF lenses, but I am reluctant to use the adapter. Glad to here you are happy with the adapter!
Since I have a few L lenses with my old 5DMKii, I use the adapter as well for my RP. Do you find that the focusing became slower using the EF lenses on adaptor?
No, actually EF works better and are sharper.
Hey mate what lens did you use with the Sony A7 II?
28-75 tamron
Hyun Ralph Jeong especially with moving subjects. Ibis doesn’t help that

comparing Sony and Canon is like comparing Android to iOS. (good hardware, a lot of feature and customisable vs ease of use). Hi, I used RF 15-35 2.8 for the RP and the Sony 16-35 2.8 GM for the A7
@@HyunRalphJeong ok thanks, very good lenses, very interesting.
Great review! Can you compare fujifilm xh1 and sony a7ii?
How is the quality of video with RP recording to External Monitor like a Ninja V?
This was very helpful as a suggestion to my friend in terms of upgrading to a full frame mirrorless camera!
This is THE video I’ve been looking for. I’m not a pro by any regard but want to up my quality of photos, yet I can’t afford to drop 2-3 grand on a camera! Think I’m going with the Canon and am very happy with it.
End up buying one? What do ya think?
Hyun, I'm a Cannon t3 user and looking to upgrade. The new Cannon eos RP looks like a really nice camera. Although with the smaller body style once you add an external flash with a bigger lens how is it to hold and shoot in terms of balance.
I'm new to your channel and having been a television cameraman which turned into photograph I excited to see your reviews.Thank you!!!
RP will be HUUGE upgrade from the T3.
Broooo! Review the Samyang RF 85mm f1.4 AF!
I will if I can get my hands on one but I couldn't find one anywhere haha
Hyun Ralph Jeong bro! Amazon and B&H hahahah
Looking into Nikon z5 or z50 but looking at these as well. I will b upgrading from Nikon d3400. Anybody got opinions or thoughts? Tia.
@@staLkerhu awesome man I appreciate the tip. I was looking at the a7 Sony looks like a nice camera.
Thank you for validating my purchase of the Sony a7II 🤣
Same lol. Just ordered it today
I’ve had mine for a few months now. And the photos I have pumped out on this camera are nothing shy of amazing.
How long it can record 60 FPS 1080p before battery getting down?
Which one would you suggest for Landscapes & Portraits photography .? Canon RP / 80D / 90d or any other in similar price range...?
It’s really up to what lens you want to use. The RP and 90D are both good. The RP’s image quality will be slightly better but full frame lenses are much more expensive.
@@HyunRalphJeong i dont have any lenses. I did lot of photography by mobile now I'm shifting. So may i use efs lense on RP..?
@@suyash_m4 No if you’re going to use efs lenses, just buy the 90D.
@@HyunRalphJeong sure, Thanks a lot. ❤️ Love from India

I borrowed both for the afternoon and chose the sony (the higher dynamic range is very noticeable in the photos)
I think this isn’t a fair comparisons considering the Sony a7ii was released in 2014 and the RP was released in 2019.
This isn't sports. Just a piece of consumer advice because they're priced roughly the same.
This is a gem of a video. Thanks for making this for people with real world non professional budgets.
hey im deicing about an upgrade to full frame im looking at those cameras does canon has a sigma 50mm 1.4 for that body? i also thinking about the nikon z6 which would be better lets say Sony A7iii canon EOS RP or nikon Z6 idk is there are another canon on the same price range as the other two
If you're concerned about lens selection, I think the A7 III is still the best choice.
Very good topic and interesting comparison!
Just sold my A7ii to upgrade on Canon RP, and it worth it!
Which one of these two has IBIS and if both of these don't have the feature then let me know what way does an inclusion of IBIS affect the performance of a mirrorless system including cost of lenses without OIS.
A7ii has ibis
Great video comparing entry level full frame cameras.
7:36 RP has focus light assistance wich on the other side for sony does not have or it's to dim
Ilovethisvideo
Bro which is best video camera
Yes super helpful and immensely well put together video. Thank you!!
Rf nifty nifty 50mm 1.8 STM is about 200 eur, absolutely great lens, I'd say much better than the 24-105 f4 usm (not L series)
Fantastic review give us all the things we want to know
Hey man, can you do a video or make any comments on the R5/R6? I’m a little unsure about the R6 given the 20.1 MP sensor.
fewer megapixels, but much better pixels, how is the A7SIII producing such good video and pictures with just 12 megapixels?
I have my R5/6 review coming but not until then end of September. I personally think 20mp is perfectly fine as I worked with 5D mark iii (22mp) for many years. With the sharp RF lenses, you probably won’t have any issues with resolution
The RP looks like an interesting camera, but until Canon brings out some primes that aren't bigger and heavier than the camera and cost less than two and a half times what the body costs, I'll be holding on to my money.
Seriously, who are they selling $2,500 lenses to?
They have the 35 1.8 and 85 F2 on the way. Probably a cheap 50mm is coming soon also.
@@todanrg3 There's a young lady who has a channel on TH-cam about portrait photography. She uses one of the new Canons with the 85mm f1.2 lens. the pictures are very nice, but she's a small person and she looks like she's carrying around a trash barrel.
I'm 6' 2" and 200 pounds, but I won't be considering these Canon cameras until they bring out some smaller (and less expensive) lenses.
Thanks for the heads-up.
@@scottparis6355 im 5'5 and skinny, i never understand why people complain about those lenses size amd weight, it's only slightly bigger and it's not even that much heavy,it makes me think people nowadays rarely exercise
Why was there such a price increase on the A7ii ? I can't find a new new one for 1000 . They are now 1600 ?!??!?!
Great comparisons! Thank you!
this is the most down to earth review ive seen so far but im super confused. buying my first camera soon mainly for IG pictures. need the high quality defition... im kind of decided on the sony a7ii but still i wonder if theres any cheaper options ill be happy with? there seems to be a general cult of "sony or nothing" so i'm king of in the market for a sony lol i've also seen the a6100 but i've never held a camera that wasnt full frame sensor so i have no idea of what to expect?
which one is better, EOS RP or M6 mark ii ? whats difference between those two
Raaz I have the comparison right here: th-cam.com/video/kh8fncydplM/w-d-xo.html
this is tempting, i wanna get the RF lenses which is your favourite RF lens of all time?
I use the 35mm 1.8 most often but my favorite is the 15-35 2.8
Hyun Ralph Jeong that’s the lens I had my eye on, would u recommend the RP + 15-35mm for now then upgrade body later? Just vlogs for youtube 😍
And tiktoks
Louis Luzuka yeah it’s a bit pricey but if I had to choose one lens to spend the rest of my life with, it would be the 15-35.
Hyun Ralph Jeong wow thats all I needed to hear, thank you 🙏
RP. How could it be a question ? They are not in the same "weight class".
