    I have the 5D MK IV and I wanted to replace my 7D MK II. So I decided to buy the RP. Sure, it is a slow camera, which is a bit disappointing. But be careful. It is still a canon full frame camera, with really good image quality. i do not regret it at all. I have tested all my EF lenses on it, and i can only say that this camera is underrated.

      I'm planning to upgrade from my SL2/200D to a full frame. Currently I've 50 1.8 and 85 1.8 lens. I use camera 95% for photography (close up, headshot portraits, with bokeh).... I'm confused with 5dmiv, 6dmii and rp 😞

    Funny how Vlogers rate a photography camera for video. I wish the camera manufacturers would stop listening to people like this and focus on developing an extremely good low light camera with excellent resolution and tell Vlogers to buy a video camera.

    Can we PLEASE stop judging these cameras on video specs? If they wanted it be used primarily for video, they would market it as such. Everybody wants every new release to shoot 10 bit 4:2:2 internal raw at 120p 4k with no crop. How about a kick ass photo camera that doesnt even shoot video? I'll buy that!

      D.E. SIGNS I agree with you. To me, it’s analogous to HiFi audio. From my 2nd system to my reference system, I had a separate power amp and preamp. In the reference system I even had mono blocks (2 separate amps) and a phono step up. The reason is that with an integrated amp a small box is being called up to do the work of separate equipment. No integrated amp will ever perform remotely close the separates.
      If you want all the best of video and all the best in still, get dedicated equipment.

      One other thing I have shot everything from 35mm to 11x14, and I have to say that my favorite camera were my 4x5’s. Just a lens, bellows, focusing screen, light meter. The focus (no pun intended) was in creativity.

    Thanks for the review. However I would point out that the ergonomics are much different between the two cameras. I own a 6D and have played around with the RP at the local Best Buy. The 6D is far superior in my opinion, the button and dials placement is almost perfect, the feel of the camera in my hands, it is probably Canon's best effort there. The RP feels awkward and cramped. Change for the sake of change. Too bad.

      @alchemisthere 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Preceptor Da that‘s true. But the wind tunnel test is very important for any photographer out there. And I just can‘t think of which is better since one is smaller but the bigger one has more aerodynamic edges.

    • @alchemisthere
      @alchemisthere 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Preceptor Da i don‘t know honestly. It‘s hard for me to give advice. I got a D750 after a D5300 since that‘s all I need. I know that you will get great results with an 80D, but the RP is not bad, considering the price and the most important thing: the mount options. Yout get this cheap ff body, now you get glass for it. If you upgrade your camera in the future you already have glass for it. Ok, you could also buy the ff lenses for your 80D, but in my opinion get the fullframe mirrorless for that price. Makes more sense than a DSLR now.

    • @alchemisthere
      @alchemisthere 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Preceptor Da No problem mate.
      yeah I experience the same thing. It's always hard to start when there is no friend with the same hobby/passion. And no TH-cam videos will help, cause doing something with your friends is always cooler.

    • @alchemisthere
      @alchemisthere 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Preceptor Da Sure. In the end it all depends in how important is this hobby for you, how much do you wanna use your camera and do you wanna keep doing it in the future.
      These questions should help you in how much you maybe want to spend. After that you I think Jared's camera comparison help you decide if you need certain cameras cause of their feature or if you can go with a cheaper/different model.

    The RP may also be an option for a user of an older FF EF camera (I have been using the original 5D and 6D), that does not care about sports or video (only stills), already has good EF glass to use, and wants to move to a lighter mirrorless camera, suitable for travel photography.

    amateur here, bought the rp with the 35mm lens as an update to my 5dii, i really like it, alone the autofocus upgrade is worth it to me, had to center focus recompose all the time and missed many shots on my kid and dog. low light is great too and the lightweight really has me bringing the cam along again after not bringing the 5d with me lately. Don't care what the haters say, i won't film much with it. didn't film with the 5d either. got a bunch of lenses that work fine with it and i'm very happy with it

      I've not held/used an RP...but I tried using the Sony a7ii and a7iii and couldn't figure them out. I'm sure that I'll get should I spend more time with them ...but I picked up the EOS R and it was very intuitive (despite the mode dial)...in 5 min I was navigating it's functionality.
      As for the haters...when the 6Dmkii came out everyone said it sucked...I used it last year for a week, and was blown away by the quality of the images. I presume that the RP is victim of theirs as well.

    • @gatsch69
      @gatsch69 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Silviu Vulcan no regrets so far, i really like the cam, plus the 35mm is awesome too. Been thinking of getting a 35mm for a while and couldn't be happier with it. The cam so far is great, sure battery life is a lot shorter than the 5dii but i bought the cam with a second battery and haven't had a day where i needed 2 batteries, one thing i also kinda notice is that the metering is sometimes a little inconsistent, but that might be something on my end. I have been looking into sonys as well but to be honest i was too lazy to do a whole system change, i have about 5 canon lenses which i really like and wanted to keep, they all work great with the adapter, also i'm probably too nostalgic to ever sell the 5dii so it will probably sit in my house waiting for a while cuz i didn't feel like using it after the purchase. I'd say go ahead and buy it, it's a great cam, fullframe is great too and you can keep both bodies in case you ever needed something for sports.as for the lenses, that's actually something where i would safe up to get a nice one, i have a 24-70 2.8, the first gen and it's great, buy good glass bodies come and go, cheers

      my only worry is EF adapter during auto focusing will it focus properly are you using one for EOS RP?
      i heard bad reviews about 6d mkii mainly it's video which i don't really care since i don't shoot videos with it.
      only thing that worries me now is the continuous shot. how slow is slow. need to put both camera photo and shoot side by side to tell the differences.

    I just got an RP with 50mm F1.2. (I already have a 6Dii and a M50.) I'm delighted with the RP. For me the advantages over the 6D are the light weight, the EVF, the headphone jack, and the RF mount. I shoot video at 25p so the lack of 24p is not a big issue. When Canon brings out a 5D equivalent EOS R I'll get that and use the RP for a second camera. The 4K is good for interviews where you can punch in for closeups without using 2 cameras. BTW, that extension thingy would be good for mounting on a tripod with the 50mm F1.2. A battery grip would be a good option.
    Everyone has different likes and needs, but if you can't take good photos and videos with an RP, YOU have the problem, not the camera. But if you want a different or better camera, that's fine.
    Also a big thank you to all the haters out there, I got my RP with 50mm F1.2, 35mm F1.8, adaptor, spare battery and filters for the equivalent of US$3,400.00 + tax.

    Dear Jarred, on all Canon DSLR cameras I had, they all had a pop-up flash. I bought a Canon R7 in May 2023. Unfortunately, it did not have a pop-up flash. I was in a somewhat dark situation and would have liked to have the pop-up flash for fill-in flash. Now I don't read anywhere in the reviews why the Canon R cameras no longer have a pop-up flash. I miss this one for a fill-in flash on the spot. You don't always have your external flash with you.
    Is there a reason why Canon no longer makes these pop-up flashes on the R cameras.
    Why is so little explanation given about this?

    I had the 6Dmii for about 2 months and finally switched to the RP. Basically as a weight consideration. The 6D with the kit zoom lens was so heavy that it made me not want to use it. The RP is so light and powerful that I keep it with me and use it all the time. Unfortunately, the flip side is that the battery life on the RP is appalling. The 6D I could shoot for days without thinking of battery life. The RP, I have to decide which hours I want to use it before rushing back to an outlet to charge it. I think too often we tend to ignore the more important part is, if the camera is an upgrade to our current model we own. I own right now a Canon t7i, and to me, the Canon 6d Mark II is a huge upgrade to my gear and to my abilities to create better photos. I find too often that review videos lean away from that message. I lean to the 6d simply for the fact I prefer not to need to buy an adapter for the glass I already own. I remain amused by the comparison between not only these two cameras, but between mirrorless and DSLR in general. Mirrorless is typically thought of as advantageous thanks to smaller, lighter bodies. Two ways they achieve that are shorter focal length and lack of a mirror and pentaprism. So then we have R series glass - some of the biggest and heaviest, not to mention most expensive lenses on the market today. But wait - you can put on an adapter to use your EF mount glass. Well, that just compensates for the focal length difference... hey wait a minute... yep, there goes your advantages. Oh, and if you like your body and lenses to have balance on the tripod and in the hand, well sorry but the EOS R will not have the same balance characteristics as an equivalent DSLR. So then maybe its just about features? Does the EOS R offer enough features to drive people to switch to this system? I don't personally think so, but maybe some folks do. Lastly, the apparent price advantage. Well, that evaporates as soon as you load on that nice 24 - 105 R lens it typically comes with and frankly if you're not investing in RF glass, why bother making the switch? As far as i can tell the few extra "check marks" that went to the EOS R do not really tell the story. For value you would be hard pressed to do better than the 6D MKII. It's a brilliant camera with some limitations, but with the exception of the focus points the EOS R does not overcome those limitations well enough to matter.

    Thanks, that was a great breakdown. It is a tough call between these two for me. I don't shoot action and shoot mostly handheld with heavy lenses so dropping a pound would be nice. The odd thing is I have come to prefer the optical viewfinder over the Screens for the most part. Somehow I just feel more connected to my subject. I loved the digital viewfinders at first but going back and forth I keep reaching for my old Canons over Olympus/Fuji bodies.

    Great comparison. Both are excellent cameras and I like the emphasis you put on glass and photography fundamentals over bodies. Both cameras have strengths and weaknesses. I use the 6d ii alongside the 5d iv (events, kids, crowds, people). The flip out screen is something the 5d just doesn't have, so the 6d ii is a great partner for this. I also love that both the 6d ii and 5d iv use the same battery. I often pair the 6d ii with the 16-35 iii and use it with dual pixel AF while the 5d holds the a longer lens (e.g. 70-200 2.8, 85 1.4 is, or even the 50 1.2 depending on the situation). I seldom shoot any video at all. I might upgrade the 6d ii to the R (or some next version of it), but not the RP. The RP gets minus two (-2) checks, in my situations, for being slow on paper. I should probably try it out, but I think this video confirms the slowness. Also, it's worth noting that while the autofocus points on the 6d ii are clumped when using the SLR system, you can use the dual pixel AF system on the 6d ii and get better (and slower) af coverage (albeit on a flip out screen). Along with that new 50, i imagine once those new 85s come out, it's going to be hard not having an RF mount. One more thing, I imagine that I *might* enjoy quieter shooting in some situations from the mirrorless. Is it noticeably quieter? Thanks again.

    I can’t comment on the RP, but I have the 6D mark ii, and had it 6 months and is still blowing me away with the vid and pic quality, I can’t imagine what better video must be like, I upload to YTube and insta and have to lower the bit rate and compress it so the in built app compression doesn’t do its horrid thing, so it is not quite as nice as straight out of the camera. So for me better vid would be a waste of spending thousands more. The only thing I wish for is 120fps, if it had this I would be happy as punch.

I understand the "p" in 1080p has a specific meaning but why do we say "p" in 60p when it's 60fps? Doesn't the "p" just stand for per? I really like the idea of sliding my thumb around on the rear screen to set the focal point whilst using the EVF, that's really cool and way faster than focus and recompose, which is what I mostly do now (I use a canon OES 6D mki) and I'm undecided between these two bodies to add to my bag.

When the rp was first announced it was really tempting to switch with the adapter and everything included but the more research I did the better my current camera looked. The major drawbacks for me were no top mount lcd, not a lot of external buttons for adjustments on the fly, the lower FPS, and the much smaller battery was what really killed it for me. Sebastião salgado, Irving Penn, Henri Cartier Bresson, Vivian Maier and a lot of another photographers never gets a equipment so good or tech as the ones that we use. (I know the quality of film, medium format and old lenses - the point here is this crazy technological capitalism).
    Here in Brazil - third world is especially hard to buy good equipments! Here's everything is so expensive, that we have to "work with we have".
    Well, peace!
    (never stop saying THE L MOUNT ALLIANCE!)
