guess what I did to my 25 year old Audi, Exactly that, The result was just as you described it. I pays of, it really does. Roland from good old Germany. I really enjoy ever vid, Gary, thanks.
Would have been a good idea to paint the insides of those lower spring pockets to help prevent rust, these pockets are known to rust, fail and the spring begins to push its way out the bottom.
Well done mate just what I've been looking for someone that does things right takes he's time and replaces things properly your a spot on mechanic buddy thanks for the videos keep them coming good luck for your next venture 👍
Fearless man. I had a snapped spring, its quite common, the garage didn't have a spring compressor big enough. I do some stuff myself, but not that. Have you ever tackled the suspension and brake hydraulics, that's where I find recurring problems.
I remember my father always saying to me "you've got to have a method" when approaching any job. Well, Gary, you are the epitome of a methodical approach to working on cars - and so calm and composed. I'm sure you must edit out the occasional bleep.😉
Great video Gary. Thanks for taking the time to share this valuable information. I always promised Myself a Rolls Royce before I got married. Been married and divorced twice, and still not had one, but who knows, maybe next time!
Thank you Gary , your videos are superb and I feel as though I'm viewing a meditation in restoration with the music and the calming narration. It's fantastic. Congratulations on your beautiful classic Corniche find and restoring it with the love and attention these magnificent motorcars deserve. Cheers and looking forward to more.
Thanks for testing this kit for us Gary - super impressive work, and a great summary. We have been waiting for someone to be able to demonstrate the significant improvement rather than taking our word for it!
Thanks for taking the time to share your passion with us. It's wonderful having an actor do a video like this, gives it a very polished feel. Love your Rolls Royce, I'll never be able to afford one but I get to live vicariously through TH-cam.
Great to be able to do the work yourself. U really get to known the car and u can spot addition things like the cv boots as you go. Car looks great health to drive it.
Well done! I have the springs from the handling kit, paired with bespoke adjustable front shocks from Öhlins, on my Corniche DHC. Additionally, I ditched the old tech Avons for modern SUV tyres. All in all, these improvements are impressive and I wouldn't have it any other way. I criss-cross Europe frequently in my Corniche. It just piles up the miles, particularly on the Autobahn, where I adjust the shocks to a firmer high speed setting. It's such a complete and versatile car with these changes. In the snow, the independent suspension and SUV snow tyres make the car perform fabulously.
I have a Silver Shadow II and have changed only the front anti-roll bar to a stiffer from a Bentley Turbo R. This was a very cheap upgrade and I am satisfied with the result. I bought the used anti-roll bar and the linkage from 'Westminster' in UK.
Thank you, Gary, for another great job. Great episode I liked the way you think in your safety and in the others safety too, very rare thougts in these days. You are an amazing craftsman
Listening to your comments after the conversion Gary it seems to be the best of all worlds. Firstly it is much safer on the road which then inspires more confidence when driving. Then there is the enjoyment of experiencing something new and enjoyable in how the car now drives which then makes you even more enthusiastic owning the car and driving it. That then equates to more fun and enjoyment so you end up with they joys of the famous Rolls Royce “Waftabilty” and a better handling and safer car, strikes me that whatever the cost it was well worth it! Imagine the wonderful top down autumn drives in the countryside you can now enjoy! Another great video Gary, thanks so much.
You've made a great job of that Gary! You certainly know your way around a set o spanner's and are not afraid to get your hand dirty (well orange gloves aside lol ). The finish on this kit is very good and really looks impressive. I'm glad to see you doing this work yourself and not just paying somebody to do it for you. Just subscribed as a first time viewer.
Amazing knowledge, great safety advice, the clearest description of a procedure I have ever seen, it would be good to have a tenth of your skill. The Corniche is looking impressive. K&D
Hey Gary Lad ! Another great episode - see you had your hands full with this one and lots to do. Some great advice throughout this and love the way you broke this down into manageable stages and also overcame a few issues with sound common sense; got to say the Rolls is looking superb and although the kit fitted is none original, it looks equal if not better to OEM quality. keep up the good work Pal and I look forward to the next one ! Cheers Stew
Mr Mavers! I'm convinced, so I've bought the kit and it's going on my '76 Corniche (which looks like an '85 Continental.) I too bought new shocks, and the upgraded rear springs finished in grey. We'll see!
If you think about it logically, most Rolls - Royces of this age will have a lot of wear in their suspension. So, you’re replacing old, creaking springs and shocks with new components as well as firming up the handling and ride. Improving stopping distances and subtly making everything feel better and safer. Regards.
Wow. That was great. A great video with great narration, shot and edited so well . And its obvious that you are also a great craftsman when it comes to car restoration. Well done.
Ian Tyrrell said he used to fit lots of RH-B handling kits, it's good such things are available for 50 year old cars. I assume the Classic Range Rover kit is available as well?
Great video, thank you for showing the process. I remember back in the 80's I had a Rhoddy Harvey-Bailey kit fitted to my Range Rover and was blown away by the difference it made. I had heard that his kit for the early Silver Shadows does the same thing and makes the handling better than the Series 2, and it looks like that's true based on your experience.
Great job well executed, but for me the job you done on the soft top was an exceptional area of skill and patience.well done . and may you enjoy your car for many miles.
I just replaced EVERY rubber component and all the associated bits and parts (control arms, etc.) under the car and in the engine bay on my wife’s twenty year old Thunderbird. The restoration to as new factory spec was dramatic.
I worked at a shop years ago, and they removed the struts from a pontiac grand am the guy dropped it and the spring blow off and went clean through an 8-inch thick cinder block wall. So I understand compressed springs are no joke.
Très belle et intéressante vidéo ! Merci. Je dois refaire mes trains avant et arrière sur ma SRX1663 qui en a terriblement besoin . Je commanderais ce kit très certainement ! Bravo
Hi Gary, interesting video. You commented how others may feel different to fitting such a kit , well it’s personal choice, and it’s your car, after all. You have done the work and you are pleased with the end result , and that’s all that matters. It was a particularly interesting video for me as I was fascinated with the tool you used to compress the front springs. Whilst I’ve never owned a Rolls Shadow/Corniche , I once had a Fiat 132 which had double wishbone coil springs with the shock absorbed separate mounted in the coil . I got a replica tool made by a tool maker which had a top circular plate with a long threaded rod which revolved on a bearing in the plate , a pulled up the bottom plate via the threaded rod which in turn compressed the coil spring. All in £25.00 ! Good video once again.
Really good video. Well done. At the workshop we release the front spring a little differently than this but the system you use looks impressive and effective. Thanks for your post.
Good job done there mate. What I would say, and you did stress it as well to be fair, is exercise extreme caution when releasing the spring tension from the retainer unit you lift the spring out in. We were told it must always go into the thick plate compressor to do this although I have done it without BUT ONLY IF THE SPRING IS NOT BROKEN as this causes so much unequal tensions & pressures it is simply just is not worth the risk. If that spring gets free it could cause massive / life changing injuries to anyone who gets in its way.
Beautiful car. I just heard about this upgrade from Ian Tyrrell. It’s the one upgrade this classic benefits greatly from. (Clarification: Ian Tyrrell’s TH-cam channel. Not the gentleman himself.)
The Series 1 MPW Corniche is such a pretty car. They are still relatively inexpensive compared to new 'high end' Mercedes shite but you can pull up to the Savoy, or the Hermitage in Monaco in a 40k Corniche, and you are looking like royalty. 50k buys a superb FHC. What a car. Great video but the 'shock absorbers' are the springs. Dampers are what are mistakenly called 'shockers'. Those bolt on caps for the rear UJ are glorious engineering, typical Rolls.
29:00 you don’t knock Harvey Bailey handling stuff Anyone diss HB needs a history lesson in quality & overall improvement which is what we just saw here . HB bought out Leda when Len Dixon Mr Leda retired so HB can do all the Ford stuff Leda once did and they were ford specialists and like HB on rolls Bentley it was about top handling and quality . Nice one Gary 👍
I’ve been debating upgrading to the Harvey-Bailey kit for my Silver Spur for the last three or four years. You’ve convinced me to go ahead, the next time anything on my suspension system needs attention. Although, I’ll leave the fun parts to my mechanic. Thank you.
guess what I did to my 25 year old Audi, Exactly that, The result was just as you described it. I pays of, it really does. Roland from good old Germany. I really enjoy ever vid, Gary, thanks.
Would have been a good idea to paint the insides of those lower spring pockets to help prevent rust, these pockets are known to rust, fail and the spring begins to push its way out the bottom.
My God man,you made that seem like a Saturday afternoon project . Nice work!
I have an Arnage but this is such an interesting series, that I am watching them all.
Very impressive indeed.
Paulus.
If the NTA did an award for TH-cam you would have one, and the smile on your face says it all, well done, you have a winning formula
Your a genius mate
Beautiful classic car
Beautifully executed. Job well done.
The corniche looks amazing, and its all down to you being able to tastefully keep it that way.
A chat with Harry Metcalfe of Harry's Garage fame comparing Rolls Royces would be fun. Keep it up, you're USP is an excellent spin on TH-cam.
Outstanding .
Thanks for yet another very nice episode Gary! Really nice channel you have created.
Excellent Gary.
Well done, a job well done.
Hi yes. Maybe check out my earlier episodes. Episode 3 ..I think. Regards.
I remember my father always saying to me "you've got to have a method" when approaching any job. Well, Gary, you are the epitome of a methodical approach to working on cars - and so calm and composed. I'm sure you must edit out the occasional bleep.😉
Those spring compressors frighten me to death . 😮
That is the most gorgeous car ever made and Gary you have a rare talent....that
What a beautiful example. Enjoy.
Great video Gary. Thanks for taking the time to share this valuable information. I always promised Myself a Rolls Royce before I got married. Been married and divorced twice, and still not had one, but who knows, maybe next time!
Gary is a legend & soo methodical in his work!
I hope you can train younger guys to be like you. So you have them doing the work and you are the supervisor.
Well done mate
Great video ,interesting to see modern tech improvements on an old design
Gary, great video, please come round and do the same job on my Silver Shadow.
I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a Corniche here in the US. Beautiful Rolls. One I’d love to own.
Thanks for testing this kit for us Gary - super impressive work, and a great summary. We have been waiting for someone to be able to demonstrate the significant improvement rather than taking our word for it!
Just discovered your channel. You are awesome and the Corniche a beauty.. will binge watch more
Thanks for taking the time to share your passion with us. It's wonderful having an actor do a video like this, gives it a very polished feel. Love your Rolls Royce, I'll never be able to afford one but I get to live vicariously through TH-cam.
Nice work Gary. Lovely car, it looks gorgeous and obviously drives much better and more safely now.
Hey Gary another gr8 overview of practical classic maintenance easy listening & clear what to do enjoyable keep up the great work 👍
needle bearings. urgh!! great instructional video. Thanks for taking the time.
Your right of course; you dont want the front end diving while a panik stop. Well done! So happy for you!😅
Brilliant. Thank you for sharing Gary really enjoyed watching this
Great to be able to do the work yourself. U really get to known the car and u can spot addition things like the cv boots as you go. Car looks great health to drive it.
I've heard about these kits and wondered how they performed. Very interesting to see a comparison with the original equipment. Thanks very much Gary.
Great ! And I wish I had a garage that big ! Best wishes from a fellow Brit in Japan.
I always heard about this Harvey-Bailey kit. I'm grateful to have seen your beautifully made video! Bravo!
Please continue with your videos!!! Just fantastic!!
Well done!

Well done for using this bullet proof reliable car regularly as it should be! Regards
@@classic.obsession thanks 🙏🏻
For twenty years I've owned it. It's a keeper, obviously 😊.
True passion. Love the old Rollers.
Great episode
I liked the way you think in your safety and in the others safety too, very rare thougts in these days.
You are an amazing craftsman
Wow that is amazing Gary! As someone who hopes to own a Corniche one day this is great to know! Thanks.
Listening to your comments after the conversion Gary it seems to be the best of all worlds. Firstly it is much safer on the road which then inspires more confidence when driving.

One of the only things I have not done on my '67 . Really glad I watched .All hail Rolls Royce nutters !
great stuff, you really explain it properly.
Brilliant job Gary so well filmed and explained
John
Fabulous, Mr. Mavers. Love watching you work. Pleased you're happy with the result - it's your car after all. Thanks for sharing.
What a great episode!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Super super silent inside of that car. Shown in a very clear way how to perform this replacement, awesome!
Lovely attention to detail Gaz..... She's good for another half-decade
Amazing knowledge, great safety advice, the clearest description of a procedure I have ever seen, it would be good to have a tenth of your skill. The Corniche is looking impressive. K&D
Fascinating and very therapeutic! You really have to figure that anything 50 years old can use a refresh and refurb.
Hey Gary Lad ! Another great episode - see you had your hands full with this one and lots to do. I assume the Classic Range Rover kit is available as well?
I've noticed the rolls is so overbuilt, like a truck, the parts are massive. Really makes me want one.
As usual Gary your enthusiasm shines through. Keep the awesome videos coming. Thanks again

Fantastic upgrade - looked like almost all the body roll was eliminated. A big job but well worth it !
This is a PhD course in Rolls Royce suspension repair THANKS for the education
Me encanta el cariño que le pones, eso se ve recompensado y demuestra que los clasicos siguen siendo buenos coches.
Really enjoying your content Gary. I think yours is the first roller I’ve seen with a rev counter!
Inspiring Gary..From the "White Shadow" Shane in Australia

Ein sehr interessanter & lehrreicher Kanal. Gut wird jeder Handgriff gezeigt & erklärt. Gratulation !
Beautiful car and transformed with that kit.
Excellent video of a beautiful car. Looking forward to the next. Thanks Gary 😎
Très belle et intéressante vidéo ! Merci.
Je dois refaire mes trains avant et arrière sur ma SRX1663 qui en a terriblement besoin .
Je commanderais ce kit très certainement ! Bravo
I’ve waited ages for this film… and it was well worth that wait!!! Superb job sir!!!
My favourite car channel..superb and I love your style and of course your knowledge is sublime
Mesmerising viewing. Am amazed and impressed by your knowledge and abilities. It must have been a very satisfying task.

Top class , bring it to East Kilbride we have not roundabouts on the planet. 😅
Meant to say more roundabouts.😮
Really interesting, many thanks. And it looks fabulous!
Good man Gary 🙂
A fantastic, informative video Gary, really enjoyable.
Fantastic Gary, enjoyed that 👍🏻
Excellent video....Thank you Gary! 😁
Another great video Gary, like the difference in suspension performance, great upgrade.😀😀
Great job Gary, beautiful car
