You are Gary, a dying breed. One who has a deep attention to detail and who thinks ahead to possible negative outcomes and enacts preventative action. This was a joy to watch, thank you!
Your video work helps the rest of us understand where the bills come from. Mechanics definitely are a special lot, needing knowledge and patience, and dexterity.
It's therapy for me too. The music is better on this one - more hypnotic than the twangy tune on some of the others. Indulgence and relaxation - thank you Gary!
Carlsberg is an industrial mass-market lager, and Gary is a very competent and conscientious amateur mechanic. And both are (unfortunately) associated with a certain red football club… 😊
A joy to watch thats for sure.If only I had people like you to take care of my cars it would ve been great. There still people around who care for what they are doing.
I don't have a Roll Royce, nor do I want to own one, because it looks like it's a leaking beast, but Classic Obsession's videos are so calming to watch! I do learn some additional car fixing techniques, though.
I've only just discovered this channel and I have to say its superb watching..great choice of music as well and the voice over to. I'll bet your children loved their bedtime stories, it's very relaxing listening. Lovely cars you have. Thank you..👍👍
Gary. I have been a aeroframe and engine fitter from an aprentice, you are one good self taut machanic who could embaris me, l love your videos , am now 64 and love what you are doing, l also love classic cars. Take care Dave
Your videos are excellent and very therapeutic to watch, Roll Royce are so advance that they leak oil all over the chassis to prevent rot and rust, now that’s genius .😊
I like the Classic Obsession style very much, obviously there's a lot of work done in the editing, no irrelevant, meaningless fumbling, just showing the bits that we would need to know and what to watch out for if we were lucky enough to own a classic car, if not, like me, it's just a fascinating few minutes watching someone else who likes doing what they do. I have to say however, it won't be long before your body complains about working on the floor and dictates that a service pit is required, sooner that later and before it's too late and knees, back and hips give up the ghost. Peter Norcliffe, Huddersfield.
After cleaning any mating surfaces I wipe them over with a lint free cloth with Methylated Spirit. Really good for degreasing. Dry's almost instantly and makes it super clean. Thanks for the info. I'm in the market for a Shadow this year so found this very helpful.
It is most enjoyable listening to and watching your TH-cam contributions. Certainly great attention to detail. It seems that Rolls Royce makes things unnecessarily complicated with some parts of the design. As you say a sump plug in the transmission would be a good idea. Why didn’t they, who knows.
Hi. I know they’re an absolute pain. I’ll do the crankcase gasket as you never know but my suspicions are rear seal. It’ll be gearbox out and Introcar do an upgrade which is much more reliable than the original design. Thanks for watching. Regards.
Hey Gary Lad ! Superb episode and love the way you've got around (nearly) all the leaks:-) Camera work is good and the level of detail you go into is just right. Its a clean motor underneath I have to say and its looking superb - a very classy motor indeed. Im putting a double garage on my Christmas list this year - yours is great. looking forward to the next episode and keep up the great work! Cheers Stew
My Father, God rest his soul, always used to say about classic cars that an oil leak was a useful indicator that there was oil in the car and it was an effective rust preventative!
Hi Gary I just wanted to complement you on your excellent content! Thoroughly enjoyable and the perfect viewing time for me in Adelaide, South Australia having just got home from my local Mercedes car club monthly meeting. I really need to make some more TH-cam content myself. Cheers Tom
amazing knowledge gary what a lovely car thanks for taking time out to show all the tips please keep them coming i love the corniche ha map of the world that was funny you get my luck as well ha you are a brilliant teacher not many people in this day and age can do all these things what a great upgrade on the oil filter you could make a sump plug hole in the pan be good to do
I love your vids, so professional for won how is untrained, am trained and very much in your cornerner, it's about what you want to learn. Excellent mate. Lots of love Dave
Very interesting and useful video that can fit for many jaguar Borg warner as well. Good to know that you made the trip to Angouleme but I will appreciate to see you next year, same place. Or maybe at Le mans classic ? Take care. 👋
With all the videos you do and all the cars you work on I’m surprised you don’t have a lift in your garage. As the years build up on us crawling under these cars gets harder and harder.
The bloody rear main seal I’d say Gary …. It’s engine oil not gearbox from the look of the drops. Perhaps give the underside a good pressure wash down to get rid of any residual oil…???? However they all eventually weep there and that’s gearbox out to fix that. I put up with a few drops from my 86 Spirit rear main until , like you , I was tired of seeing the drops on my garage floor…. Gosh your Corniche is elegant though , full credit to you, I love watching you work 9n the old girl. 👍🏼
The gearbox was defo leaking but that was due to loose bolts. I did the rocker gasket, the oil filter housing, the breather and that oil level sender….but the worst one of course eluded me!! That dreaded rear corkscrew joke of a seal !! Looks like gearbox out. Regards.
Coming from a commercial RR/B shop, it's good to see that kind of servicing.... But, those cars on jack stands are just plain scary. Before I get the "what do you suggest?" hate comments, if there's no lift, and you have use jack stands, add some well-built cribbing under the tires. Great peace of mind with this.
Thanks Jimmy. Really appreciate your comments and advice. If it’s any reassurance, the axle stands are not run of the mill but super heavy duty from a garage that closed down. They’re like three times the thickness and height of normal. But I concur…you can’t be too safe. Kind regards.
@@classic.obsession Hi Gary, Good to hear from you. I noticed your stands.... My comment was more aimed at others who might not have your keen eye. I wouldn't want one of our fellow RR/B (or anybody) people injured. Great work there, by the way. Regards, Jimmy
@@jimmyfleetwood1118 When I use jack stands I put a spare wheel or two under the side of the car i am working on - just in case. It can only fall as far as the wheels.
Your transmission looks really good. A little clutch material in the oil is to be expected. My Cadillac's oil pan looked like yours, about the same amount of grey clutch stuff in the bottom of the pan, Bottom of your valve body looked clean enough to eat off of. On that last leak, I'm hoping for you that it is just the oil pan gasket, and not the rear main crankshaft seal. Those are never fun. It looks to me like RRs are like old Harley-Davidsons. They don't leak, they mark their territory!!
Just started watching your vids am enjoying it thanks. Could do without the piano as could not hear you plus please start wearing safety glasses. Under an old car is a must. Ask me how I know . Cheers
Gary another Great video, I'm learning a lot from watching your skills it's the BEST, Silver Spur owner. Sometimes that piano music drowns your voice, maybe turn it down a tick.?
There used to be a rumour, years ago, that Rolls Royce never used gaskets as they were so precision built; I think it was started by Rolls Royce themselves as an excuse as to why their cars leaked oils everywhere. Great video.
Yep. The top plate on the engine is a machine fit….always leaks at the back. Great engines though. Pure class. That’s why, along with the GM gearbox they we’re so successful and ran through so many models for years. Regards.
You think you had problems with leaks. I knew a chap who worked on the Supermarine Scimitar, and he was telling me that they leaked fluids like a sieve, he said no matter what you did, replaced pipes or seals there was always a puddle of fluid under them, all they could do was keep them to a minimum with fingers crossed, so you Rolls is doing quite well. I would love a Phantom VI though.
Hi Mal. I think with these it’s just a mixture of a car that’s sat for a while then abruptly brought back to life and jobs that weren’t attended to so the list built up. Yes. Similar GTE…if I can remember right, you have to strip and grease up the axle every 3k miles. Strange but very stylish and fibreglass quick!. Regards.
That ATF color and filter make me think that, at least, the pan was dropped and the gearbox was drained soon before you got the car. Possibly the entire gearbox was a rebuild (given how smooth it is)....
Doesn’t need to be upgraded. Set up works perfectly and no faff with the gap as the way it’s designed is so simple and reliable compared to every other car on points I’ve owned before. Twiddle a knob to adjust the gap. Great design. Regards
Hello Gary, I just want to know if all the RR Corniche's open tops are the same material and mechanisms. Some have said they're all the same, apart from some external cosmetic changes incl. some interior bits. Thanks mate
Hi, yes. Top frames are the same but although the headliners are also the same(albeit different colours. I think there’s beige and grey) the hood material can be Vinyl or canvas/mohair. But I stand to be corrected!! Regards.

I wonder how many mechanics at the local garage would be as thorough as this? Not many I suspect. It's nice to see someone who both thinks and cares.
As a mechanic I strive for your perfection of detail.
No one can accuse you of not paying attention detail in your work, Mr. Mavers. I'm sure you'll eradicate the last pesky oil leak. Thanks for sharing.

Those GM hydramatic and turbo hydramatics were excellent transmissions, best they ever made very smooth strong and durable
I agree. There’s also one in my XJS but for some reason it doesn’t feel as good. Regards.
This is instantly one of my favorite youtube channels. The content, production, subject matter and characters are all top notch. Cheers to you Gary!
That was delightful to see someone doing what is needed for a lovely old Rolls Royce! 😊👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👌
If Carlsberg did Rolls Royce servicing, this would be it in a nutshell, fantastic to watch a master craftsman at work.
Carlsberg is an industrial mass-market lager, and Gary is a very competent and conscientious amateur mechanic.

Fantastic job! These videos will be gospel for me when I tackle my 1967 Silver Shadow, it leaks like a stuck pig!

It's beautiful how "easy" it is to service such a car. Showes how it's made to be serviced and last and not used and thrown away.
It's been said below but great to see attention to detail and nothing so therapeutic as an oil change : )
Love watching you work on the Rolls!
Your videos are excellent and very therapeutic to watch, Roll Royce are so advance that they leak oil all over the chassis to prevent rot and rust, now that’s genius .😊
Lovely old girl. And only one good thing comes from all that oil blowing everywhere under the car !!! No rust. Love the content sir.
Fantastic Production A Joy To Watch
Great seeing that oil change , the car is beautiful.
No need to apologise for the video being too technical, I really enjoyed it, learning along the way. Another fantastic video.
Thanks 👍
Re-doing the points ! Flashback to the early 80s!
Only upside of oil leaks on older cars is Rust Prevention sad but true Great series 👍 nice to see your Rolls so well maintained and cared for

I said exactly the same thing just as you said it about having no sump plug on the gearbox sump!
Luckily gearbox fluid doesn't need changing too often otherwise fiting drain plug is sump would be a worthwhile upgrade 😉
Really good video, thanks. And you are so right, preventative maintenance is always better and cheaper than corrective !!
Just started my tax return, so needed cheering up. Thanks Gary, looking forward to the next one👍🏻

It seems that Rolls Royce makes things unnecessarily complicated with some parts of the design. As you say a sump plug in the transmission would be a good idea. Why didn’t they, who knows.
The rear crankshaft seal is spiral in design and will weep when the motor is not running. Much later cars used a newer design that can be retrofitted.

It was an interesting episode watching you do such a thorough job.
How many people would show another oil leak trust me not many these days . You are a cut above the rest 👍

Great content Gary. Keep up with the great videos.
When you have the gear box sump of maybe a good time to weld a drain plug on a good quality nut and a bolt and copper washer

I think the reason a sump plug wasn’t allowed for is so one would tend to change the filter once the cover is off
I often wondered why the internal strainer in the GM transmission has so much 'flop' in it even when the retaining bolt is correctly tightened.
