Nope, we definitely weren’t invited on this trip. There was a photographer to get shots for Octane magazine but that was only for a few days. Most of it was just Mum and Dad. I think the real credit goes to Mum for this episode. She did most of the outside shots, not sure if she ever quite recovered brrrr....

As a young lad of 17yrs old, in 1976, my first full time job was working for a private small printing company in the North Of England, rather eccentric owner, who let me drive his RR Silver Shadow on occasions, it was like driving a land yacht, but, like Harry, I felt there was something very special about this model, the bonnet and the emblem was so far ahead. What a fantastic, memory to go with Harry to the Arctic Circle. Thanks for the memory Harry, I now have lived in in the USA (for 20 years) and there just isn't the same special type of car.
I love the idea that that car has been working hard in a boring job for 40 years, travelled no further than a local church and has finally had the opportunity to go for an adventure of a life time. What a fantastic idea for a road trip. I can't imagine many Shadow owners would have the balls to take their cars on such an epic adventure, especially when faced with such severe weather conditions. It just goes to show, when looked after, what a near half century old Rolls Royce is still capable of, and how well engineered they really are.

Harry, I put the same sticker on the back of my vehicle when we arrived! We did it in our 2001 discovery td5 towing our 1965 Sankey trailer with a roof tent mounted on top, me and my wife and two boys all slept in the tent! We drove from the Bristol area and carried on after the artic centre and turned right, we drove across Sweden and into Finland, we then turned and headed home via Poland! We covered 4700 miles and did it in 13 days so lots of driving, our trusty old landy served us well apart from a small alternator problem north of Stockholm.. it's something both my boys will have brilliant memories of and life experiences means so much to me and my wife. For people who live and work in the arctic the whole thing about avoiding driving on ice and needing studded tires is a joke. -16 C is a balmy shorts and sandals day for us

I loved that video so much that I wanted to copy this road trip, so I drove my late grandfathers 1996 Renault Megane Coach to the Arctic Circle and then kept going to the North Cape. Not a beautiful Rolls, but not a new car either. It was such a great trip that I would do again any time. Thank you so much for the inspiration, Sir! Great video Harry! You have a lot of guts taking that old Shadow to the Arctic Circle! I'm on my second 1967 Shadow and I wish I was in England, where it's probably a lot easier to find a good mechanic who is familiar with them. I have a good mechanic, but it's a little distance. I've experienced similar issues with my car, my points made a backfire once and it was an easy fix. I noticed my speedometer needle not moving on occasion. Right now my wipers don't "park" and I'm getting ready to replace my blower switch. I only paid $5,000 for my car with 54,000 miles and it had brake issues, deferred maintenance, some cosmetic issues, but I love the comfort, the view from the wheel, the "wafting ride", nothing like it, even better than my 1993 RR Spur II. Keep the great videos coming, glad I stumbled on this one!
Epic! Well done Harry. Love this type of trip. There's nothing quite like jumping in your own car and heading off on a proper long trip over several days/weeks. It feels adventurous in a way that air travel just doesn't, much as I love the convenience and speed of flying. I used to love reading Car magazine's epic trips - Gavin Green drove across Australia when the first BMW MINI was launched, for example and your own recreation of the Ferrari to the Sahara - great stuff!
I really enjoy these journey videos. Harry's mechanical knowledge always comes in handy. Just when someone thinks they could do the same journey he shows 'minor' challenges like the choke and adjusting the points are needed. Sturdy Rolls!
Most relaxing view I had in years. The moments of small frustration are so recognizable. Loved how Harry dealt with them by applying slight mockery. I'd probably resort to violently kicking the car in a maniacal frenzy at some point.

Took my old Jaguar up there in the middle of the winter, but you got even more balls, taking a Shadow! As a norwegian I totally enjoyed this episode of Harry's garage. As a tip to anyone else who are thinking about doing the same trip: I think I would have waited till I got to Norway and then bought som studded tires for this trip. As Harry points out - it can be really slippery, and they don't use that much salt - so road conditions can be really icy - north of Trondheim :)

Not sure if this will be read...but here goes. I'm an Aussie and last July 2019...glad it wasn't planned for this year, three of us travelled from Penzance, Cornwall to Bodo, Norway by train, stopping at London, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Oslo, Trondheim(visiting Hell on a gloriously sunny and warm day), Mo-I-Rana, also staying at the Scandic. Bodo, then on to the daily Hurtigruten ferry service taking us via Tromso and many other port towns to Kirkenes in northern Norway. The journey/voyage of a lifetime that I'd repeat in a heartbeat. From the train at the end of this video, we could look down to the Arctic Circle and it was also announced on board as we crossed. The weather in July was simply stunning, warm, low to mid 20'C and I was in shorts and T shirt the whole way and return. We also travelled back to London by public transport before flying home. Thanks for a wonderful perspective by car in mid winter.

Absolutely fantastic and well done Harry! The Italian tuneup you gave the old girl on the way to Copenhagen didn't do any harm! Using a bit of oil is not unusual the first time on a high speed trip in a car that has spent most of its time at lower speeds. And regapping points by the side of the road takes me back (only it was an Austin 1800, not a Roller!). If a modern car started misfiring it would be check engine light, scan the computer....
As if taking a Testarossa to the Sahara wasn't brave enough, now you're taking a cheap old Rolls Royce way up north. What a cool journey. Next trip: an old Land Rover into the tropics. :D

Thanks for taking us along! I did a very civilized mini-tour with Porsche years ago and thought that was pretty funny (above the Arctic Circle in Finland in January in a Carrera 4), but your journey reminds me much more of all the crazy trips I took when I was young--driving worn out cars and trucks across the frozen western US in mid-winter; hitchhiking with backpack and snowshoes from Minneapolis to Tahoe; driving a VW micro bus (split windshield/sunroof version) at night through Minnesota and Wisconsin, munching on frozen bagels to keep awake, and using a long handle ice scraper on the INSIDE of the windshields as I drove). It is all such good fun. I was also reminded of the trick of using a matchbook cover as a feeler gauge when gapping the points--works every time. I even discovered that a car chain tensioner (rubber band, really) is just the right size for very temporarily replacing the drive belt on a VW Squareback, given that it is downhill from Truckee, California, to Reno, Nevada. Anyway, I think the old Rolls discovered her second childhood on your trip (Part One), and I am so glad you shared the journey with your viewers! Oh one more memory--brought on by your getting your jacket stuck in the hood--I was stuck in a snowy rut once, with no shovel or chains, and so used my jacket for traction--got out of the rut; put the jacket back on; and drove on. It's the craziness and opportunities for inspiration (or desperation) that make such adventures so much fun!

also when a car is equipped with 4 proper snow tires ,it's magical and feels great to drive ,I felt I was driving myself because I love these harsh winter conditions ,very pleasurable to watch ,thank you Harry.
Did the same journey in a Volvo 264 back in '89. Probably the perfect car for the conditions. Only I had standard UK tyres on it because I had a set of studded tyres waiting for me in Molde. So it was a bit more adventurous than it might have been. Oh, and the base gasket had blown on the Peugeot engine cylinder block. So I was running an open, unpressurised cooling system (no radiator cap) to avoid the water getting into the oil. Because the water boiled off every few miles, I had a washer bottle tank rigged to top up the radiator! Both had to be topped up about every 50 miles. Even though I had several water bottles in the car, they kept freezing (because the heater only worked when the water system had just been topped up), so I had to store them under the bonnet. When I ran out completely, I treked over a field full of waist deep snow to fill the bottles from a fast flowing stream which I was surprised to find wasn't frozen. Conditions were exactly the same as you experienced Harry. The big difference was that I did slide off the road a couple of times, due to the virtually useless tyres, which were only marginally better when deflated to 15 PSI and travelling at 15 MPH. A great adventure to be sure. Thank you for sharing your journey. It's brought back many memories.

May I suggest a Volvo S or V70 automatic, 1997- 2000 they are very comfortable and will keep you fresh and relaxed even after days of driving, easy to fix, cheap and fun to drive.

pal, suv's are threats to everyone on the road. higher impact area means less chances to survive. selfish pos on wheels. set aside all that, since they are higher than regular cars, they have a higher chance to flip over.
Interestingly, years ago SUV's gave a commanding driving position over cars, now there are so many of the bloody things for a car driver all you can see is towering SUV's. I'd love to do the same with my XF, if I could afford the petrol!

Exactly what i like to see. An old car driven properly, what it was designed for. I found it interesting to see the oil consumption improve over time. With a good even compression reading across the cylinders, most wouldn't consider the rings to be part of the cause. I think here, with the years of light use, the engine barely achieving running temp, it is likely the oil control rings below the compression rings were gummed up. An engine can burn quite a quantity of oil without visible blue smoke in daylight, and a long run at full operating temp (at least before the arctic conditions) looks to have corrected the issue to a reasonable level, where valve guide leakage is unlikely to improve without resorting to the spanners.
I love this production on so many levels. I was 10 years old when this car came out and I've always love it. I used to draw pictures of it in my school books, lol. Love the use of the paper maps, setting points, driving on the Autobahn. I was stationed in Germany for many years and have driven much of Europe. So funny seeing you pull up at a Circle K, we have these here in Florida. Nice stop in "Hell" , lol. I saw that Moose cross the road at dusk. Congratulations on putting on the sticker. I drove from Florida to Argentina and put many stickers on my vehicle, and know the feeling of accomplismement. Cheers and thank you.

Five years prior, a friend and I also visited Tromso in February. The Northern Lights were absolutely amazing, one night we were out in the barren countryside and came across a local cross-country skiing with his dog at night. Suddenly the shimmering green sky lit up in golds, purples, and yellows. Even the local stared awestruck at it for about ten minutes. The snow was reflecting gold, minus 18 degrees, and being unable to take my eyes off the sky. Just remembering that... Oh, and you've got a torn spark plug cable boot at 18:30.

I cannot believe that I just spent 37 minutes of my life on your adventure. Truth be told, I filled my two-week pill box with my morning and evening apothecary selections of the drugs needed to keep this almost old man alive. Much like putting oil into your Rolls Royce I set up my own lubricant of life in the pillbox. Living near the equator, I longed for the good crisp air you were breathing. The beauty of a country covered in snow isn't that it is cold, it is that it is marvelously quiet. You didn't mention that. And now as I come to your end, I find that it isn't really the end, as there is a part two. I'll watch that happily next time I fill the pill box.

Epic adventure. Loved it. Reminded me a lot of a couple of trips I made up the E6 to the Arctic Circle in old cars. The first one was in a 1966 Sunbeam Alpine roadster. I did that trip in summer to see the midnight sun and the weather was fabulous. The road not so much though. In summer the E6 is much busier and you often get stuck behind slow convoys of (mostly) German-registered camper vans. They also have long stretches of roadworks where the entire road surface is ripped up and you have to judder along for miles on muddy gravel. The Alpine ran like a dream though and I eventually ended up in Helsinki. I particularly remember the bridge at 27:33 where I inadvertently ran over what must have been the world's unluckiest mouse! The second time was in a 1965 E-Type Coupe and took me all the way to the North Cape. This time it was in autumn and the E6 was much quieter although the weather wasn't great. The E-Type was cosy and sure-footed though and completely faultless. On both trips I stopped at the Scandic in Mo-I -Rana where on my second trip a small delegation of curious locals came to look at the E-Type. Great memories and thanks for a great video.
I have done the same stretch of road, its a EPIC journey and Norway is a stunning country (beyond believe). Driving on Norwegian roads where they dont put salt on them is a true achievement. The tranquility and majestic scenery made my trip to Tromsø a life moment. Full summer in Norway is better though for outside camping.
I just had to rewatch this after watching the video on the Rolls being done up. What an amazing and enjoyable trip this was to watch - especially the hilarious jacket under the bonnet incident.
Love this video! I love the easy-going, down-to-earth style and pace of the action. I love that the car wouldn't start in the cold, and that it required a bit of love and attention occasionally. I love Harry not being ready to film! When these cars were new, they never broke down. They simply disappeared from the driveway for a day or two! If your car uses a bit of oil between changes, and you do lots of short trips over that time, the level doesn't drop like you'd think it would, because the oil becomes diluted with fuel washed off the cylinder walls. Then when you go on a long drive at high speed, the engine warms right up and "dries out", and the oil level drops alarmingly, but what has actually happened is that the fuel has burned away, leaving just the true oil level. 2000 miles is more or less the distance from Perth to Sydney across the Nullarbor. I think that that journey would be a piece of cake compared to driving into the Arctic! You've got weight and a long wheelbase helping you along the ice roads. The old rear-drive Volvos (1 and 2 series etc) are long and skinny. They look a bit funny, but work quite well on loose surfaces.

We covered 4700 miles and did it in 13 days so lots of driving, our trusty old landy served us well apart from a small alternator problem north of Stockholm.. it's something both my boys will have brilliant memories of and life experiences means so much to me and my wife.

Harry is absolutely brilliant. He puts all of the car shows on TV to shame! Why isn't this on mainstream TV? It is such compelling viewing and I can listen to Harry all day.
I loved that video so much that I wanted to copy this road trip, so I drove my late grandfathers 1996 Renault Megane Coach to the Arctic Circle and then kept going to the North Cape. Not a beautiful Rolls, but not a new car either. It was such a great trip that I would do again any time. Thank you so much for the inspiration, Sir! And thanks for driving all of your cars as they should be driven and sharing it with us!

Great video Harry! You have a lot of guts taking that old Shadow to the Arctic Circle! I'm on my second 1967 Shadow and I wish I was in England, where it's probably a lot easier to find a good mechanic who is familiar with them. I have a good mechanic, but it's a little distance. I've experienced similar issues with my car, my points made a backfire once and it was an easy fix. I noticed my speedometer needle not moving on occasion. Right now my wipers don't "park" and I'm getting ready to replace my blower switch. I only paid $5,000 for my car with 54,000 miles and it had brake issues, deferred maintenance, some cosmetic issues, but I love the comfort, the view from the wheel, the "wafting ride", nothing like it, even better than my 1993 RR Spur II. Keep the great videos coming, glad I stumbled on this one!

Epic! Well done Harry. Love this type of trip. There's nothing quite like jumping in your own car and heading off on a proper long trip over several days/weeks. It feels adventurous in a way that air travel just doesn't, much as I love the convenience and speed of flying. I used to love reading Car magazine's epic trips - Gavin Green drove across Australia when the first BMW MINI was launched, for example and your own recreation of the Ferrari to the Sahara - great stuff!
I really enjoy these journey videos. Harry's mechanical knowledge always comes in handy. Just when someone thinks they could do the same journey he shows 'minor' challenges like the choke and adjusting the points are needed. Sturdy Rolls!

As a norwegian I totally enjoyed this episode of Harry's garage. As a tip to anyone else who are thinking about doing the same trip: I think I would have waited till I got to Norway and then bought som studded tires for this trip. As Harry points out - it can be really slippery, and they don't use that much salt - so road conditions can be really icy - north of Trondheim :)

Not sure if this will be read...but here goes. I'm an Aussie and last July 2019...glad it wasn't planned for this year, three of us travelled from Penzance, Cornwall to Bodo, Norway by train, stopping at London, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Oslo, Trondheim(visiting Hell on a gloriously sunny and warm day), Mo-I-Rana, also staying at the Scandic.
Bodo, then on to the daily Hurtigruten ferry service taking us via Tromso and many other port towns to Kirkenes in northern Norway. The journey/voyage of a lifetime that I'd repeat in a heartbeat. From the train at the end of this video, we could look down to the Arctic Circle and it was also announced on board as we crossed.
The weather in July was simply stunning, warm, low to mid 20'C and I was in shorts and T shirt the whole way and return. We also travelled back to London by public transport before flying home.
Thanks for a wonderful perspective by car in mid winter.

Absolutely fantastic and well done Harry! The Italian tuneup you gave the old girl on the way to Copenhagen didn't do any harm! Using a bit of oil is not unusual the first time on a high speed trip in a car that has spent most of its time at lower speeds. And regapping points by the side of the road takes me back (only it was an Austin 1800, not a Roller!). If a modern car started misfiring it would be check engine light, scan the computer....
As if taking a Testarossa to the Sahara wasn't brave enough, now you're taking a cheap old Rolls Royce way up north.
What a cool journey.
Next trip: an old Land Rover into the tropics. :D

I did a very civilized mini-tour with Porsche years ago and thought that was pretty funny (above the Arctic Circle in Finland in January in a Carrera 4), but your journey reminds me much more of all the crazy trips I took when I was young--driving worn out cars and trucks across the frozen western US in mid-winter; hitchhiking with backpack and snowshoes from Minneapolis to Tahoe; driving a VW micro bus (split windshield/sunroof version) at night through Minnesota and Wisconsin, munching on frozen bagels to keep awake, and using a long handle ice scraper on the INSIDE of the windshields as I drove). It is all such good fun. I was also reminded of the trick of using a matchbook cover as a feeler gauge when gapping the points--works every time. I even discovered that a car chain tensioner (rubber band, really) is just the right size for very temporarily replacing the drive belt on a VW Squareback, given that it is downhill from Truckee, California, to Reno, Nevada. Anyway, I think the old Rolls discovered her second childhood on your trip (Part One), and I am so glad you shared the journey with your viewers! Oh one more memory--brought on by your getting your jacket stuck in the hood--I was stuck in a snowy rut once, with no shovel or chains, and so used my jacket for traction--got out of the rut; put the jacket back on; and drove on. It's the craziness and opportunities for inspiration (or desperation) that make such adventures so much fun!

Did the same journey in a Volvo 264 back in '89. Probably the perfect car for the conditions. Only I had standard UK tyres on it because I had a set of studded tyres waiting for me in Molde. So it was a bit more adventurous than it might have been.
Oh, and the base gasket had blown on the Peugeot engine cylinder block. So I was running an open, unpressurised cooling system (no radiator cap) to avoid the water getting into the oil. Because the water boiled off every few miles, I had a washer bottle tank rigged to top up the radiator! Both had to be topped up about every 50 miles. Even though I had several water bottles in the car, they kept freezing (because the heater only worked when the water system had just been topped up), so I had to store them under the bonnet. When I ran out completely, I treked over a field full of waist deep snow to fill the bottles from a fast flowing stream which I was surprised to find wasn't frozen.
Conditions were exactly the same as you experienced Harry. The big difference was that I did slide off the road a couple of times, due to the virtually useless tyres, which were only marginally better when deflated to 15 PSI and travelling at 15 MPH. A great adventure to be sure. Thank you for sharing your journey. It's brought back many memories.

Best do it in an old banger or a 4x4, I live just off the NC500 in Sutherland and the roads are hellish with potholes

May I suggest a Volvo S or V70 automatic, 1997- 2000 they are very comfortable and will keep you fresh and relaxed even after days of driving, easy to fix, cheap and fun to drive.

It is more fun watching this than yet another self indulgent vlog about meet ups with other self indulgent vloggers, talking about the car you got, thinking of getting and driving snips here and there.
Exactly what i like to see. An old car driven properly, what it was designed for. I found it interesting to see the oil consumption improve over time. With a good even compression reading across the cylinders, most wouldn't consider the rings to be part of the cause. I think here, with the years of light use, the engine barely achieving running temp, it is likely the oil control rings below the compression rings were gummed up. An engine can burn quite a quantity of oil without visible blue smoke in daylight, and a long run at full operating temp (at least before the arctic conditions) looks to have corrected the issue to a reasonable level, where valve guide leakage is unlikely to improve without resorting to the spanners.
I love this production on so many levels. I was 10 years old when this car came out and I've always love it. I used to draw pictures of it in my school books, lol. Love the use of the paper maps, setting points, driving on the Autobahn. I was stationed in Germany for many years and have driven much of Europe. So funny seeing you pull up at a Circle K, we have these here in Florida. Nice stop in "Hell" , lol. I saw that Moose cross the road at dusk. Congratulations on putting on the sticker. I drove from Florida to Argentina and put many stickers on my vehicle, and know the feeling of accomplismement. Cheers and thank you.

Five years prior, a friend and I also visited Tromso in February. The Northern Lights were absolutely amazing, one night we were out in the barren countryside and came across a local cross-country skiing with his dog at night. Suddenly the shimmering green sky lit up in golds, purples, and yellows. Even the local stared awestruck at it for about ten minutes. The snow was reflecting gold, minus 18 degrees, and being unable to take my eyes off the sky. Just remembering that...

I cannot believe that I just spent 37 minutes of my life on your adventure. Truth be told, I filled my two-week pill box with my morning and evening apothecary selections of the drugs needed to keep this almost old man alive. Much like putting oil into your Rolls Royce I set up my own lubricant of life in the pillbox. Living near the equator, I longed for the good crisp air you were breathing. The beauty of a country covered in snow isn't that it is cold, it is that it is marvelously quiet. You didn't mention that. And now as I come to your end, I find that it isn't really the end, as there is a part two. I'll watch that happily next time I fill the pill box.

Epic adventure. Loved it.
Reminded me a lot of a couple of trips I made up the E6 to the Arctic Circle in old cars. The first one was in a 1966 Sunbeam Alpine roadster. I did that trip in summer to see the midnight sun and the weather was fabulous. The road not so much though. In summer the E6 is much busier and you often get stuck behind slow convoys of (mostly) German-registered camper vans. They also have long stretches of roadworks where the entire road surface is ripped up and you have to judder along for miles on muddy gravel. The Alpine ran like a dream though and I eventually ended up in Helsinki. I particularly remember the bridge at 27:33 where I inadvertently ran over what must have been the world's unluckiest mouse!
The second time was in a 1965 E-Type Coupe and took me all the way to the North Cape. This time it was in autumn and the E6 was much quieter although the weather wasn't great. The E-Type was cosy and sure-footed though and completely faultless. On both trips I stopped at the Scandic in Mo-I -Rana where on my second trip a small delegation of curious locals came to look at the E-Type.

I have done the same stretch of road, its a EPIC journey and Norway is a stunning country (beyond believe). Driving on Norwegian roads where they dont put salt on them is a true achievement. The tranquility and majestic scenery made my trip to Tromsø a life moment. Full summer in Norway is better though for outside camping.

I just had to rewatch this after watching the video on the Rolls being done up. What an amazing and enjoyable trip this was to watch - especially the hilarious jacket under the bonnet incident.
That car is surely engineered for all conditions and it is lovely to see it getting some proper use instead of being stored away.

Love this video! I love the easy-going, down-to-earth style and pace of the action. I love that the car wouldn't start in the cold, and that it required a bit of love and attention occasionally. I love Harry not being ready to film!
When these cars were new, they never broke down. They simply disappeared from the driveway for a day or two!
If your car uses a bit of oil between changes, and you do lots of short trips over that time, the level doesn't drop like you'd think it would, because the oil becomes diluted with fuel washed off the cylinder walls. Then when you go on a long drive at high speed, the engine warms right up and "dries out", and the oil level drops alarmingly, but what has actually happened is that the fuel has burned away, leaving just the true oil level.
2000 miles is more or less the distance from Perth to Sydney across the Nullarbor. I think that that journey would be a piece of cake compared to driving into the Arctic!
You've got weight and a long wheelbase helping you along the ice roads. The old rear-drive Volvos (1 and 2 series etc) are long and skinny. They look a bit funny, but work quite well on loose surfaces.
This will be my third rewatch of this video series. Planning to do a similar trip with my GR Yaris this winter. Very excited!
