Vidhi Jain does not send her daughter to school or force her into the rat race of exams and degrees. Disillusioned by the ‘factory schooling’ system, she became an educationist and created a radical alternative. Breaking barriers and going against typical Indian education system, here her students are given the room to make choices and the freedom to be creative. She shares the results this has achieved.

I always think about how our ancestors were many things. They were theorists, philosophers, architects, artists, and many more things and weren't defined by one career. But now you are only defined by one path. He is a engineer, She is a doctor. Why can't we be many things at once? We need to be more accepting and unbiased.

Excellent point. Our education system has a lot of loop holes. On one hand we say that everyone is different and has different mental emotional and creative setup. And on other hand we have this education system which judges everyone on same parameters.
I am not sure that how well not going to school will work, but education which is being given in current form is totally unacceptable.

    • @BeyondTrafficJam
      @BeyondTrafficJam 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Well, there are many benefits of going to school too. In mordern way of living parents are too busy to find time for children. So who is going to guide these children? Which so much evil in society there are also chances that these children can get diverted in wrong direction. Moreover other benefits of going school can't be ignored.
So school education which is there to be transformed. some of the steps may be-
      1- Scrapping current examination system.
2- Giving students more creative space.
3- Promoting and awarding creative skills. Originality should be encouraged.
4- Providing practical education and real life feel of the subjects.
these are some things which can be done to start with.

To show the politics which is going on in the C.B.S.E. schools. & how a good student abused by some corrupt teachers . & loosing his marks just bcoz he is writing in his own words in exams not writing the bookish language .
    - Thank you

If the exams are vanished may be then also quality of education will improve because all people will focus on learning not exams etc. And also they should learn from internet, books, youtube, and many more not only with offline teacher. And they should learn whatever they want no need to force them.

School has always compressed my widening imagination and thrust of my knowledge. Right now I am in college where the conditions are much worse. I always want to be a teacher so that I can help those students who are like me but because of no guidance I have joined medical college where the system of learning is just for passing the exam. I don't know now whether I will be a doctor or a teacher. I am always in the favour of free learning.

It's a choice I'd say coz if one wants to become a doctor or an engineer it's not possible without getting a degree otherwise it's upto the person's personal choice. Plus schooling helps discipline children, even in older times children were schooled although the way of schooling was different back then.
Now the problem is with the particular pattern of our education system.

Home schooling is a good idea.
But I felt you guys are stressing it and taking the matters a little bit more.
I mean take home schooling, but let your kids have degrees, it's okay to give attention and give practical knowledge. Also let them write exams and have certificate. Be practical a little bit.

While I resonate with her points of absence of creativity in our pedagogies and the conformity it breeds in our people's thinking abilities and the advantages of self-learning I wish she would have also covered ways that could be applied for professions and vocations which need a license to perform like medicine, architecture, law or anything that deals with critical infrastructure.
For that we might need different solutions for curating syllabi and assessment, which ofc might be very different from what exists right now via the way our universities and schools do but just pointing out something that she missed out on.
I'm a self-directed learner myself btw and writing a book on designing novel interactive visual abstractions (novel ui concepts) for new ways of learning, teaching, explaining, discovering, inventing things online. This book aims to explore new approaches to online learning, teaching, explaining, discovering, and inventing, intersecting with educational psychology, open education, and interface design. The book is structured around ten themes, each represented by a pair of questions related to UI design, edtech, open education, teaching, research, learning, and invention.
A stepping stone towards building an ecosystem of services, tools and platforms to make autodidactism feasible and materially possible.
