Against Conventional Wisdom: Is formal education system actually good?

- Raising a one year old kid, Zayn, I realized that there a number of things to be looked at. And one of the most important aspect is your child's education.
Of course every parent wants his/her child to get the best education. Therefore, they enroll him/her in the best school. But is enrolling in the formal education system actually worth it?
I don't think so. Thus, my wife and I have decided NOT to send Zayn to a school.
Now before you get all tensed and start throwing questionable looks around, I would urge you to watch this video, till the end, and try to understand a contrarian perspective towards formal education system. It's not a popular choice, but there are fact-based reasons why I staunchly advocate this.

Now I am not criticizing the education system, but simply stating my opinions on why the formal education system may not be as good as one might think. Hope you understand a different point of view :)

I am a dad and I plan to teach these things to my son. I don't expect all learning to happen in a school. Afterall, the school is only a limited time institution that kids go to pick up a fixed set of knowledge. We need to set our expectations realistically somewhere.
As a teacher, I completely agree with this. Most schools are just glorified daycare centres for kids with busy parents. Having said that, I do believe that there is a great scope for improvement and change in our education systems. One that will be driven by the demand for core skills in the 21st-century job market. Keep up the great work Akshat! Loving the content!

yes, i agree with you partially, why we need prepare our kids for job market, i don't want to give economy one more product instead if we focus on creating entrepreneurs and self reliant living and minimalism then kids will be really good asset us and our nation.
Bro, Do fact check properly. Central gov have already recommended new education system. (I.e : 40% academic 60% sports, art and other.)

I went to one of the best schools in Trivandrum Kerala..My experience with school is bad..I still suffer from some of the post trauma situation from harassment of teachers in the school I studied .. the comparisons between kids, the over competition and teachers behaviour in general has made me hate schools..I am glad you have decided not to butcher your kids future by sending them to a school .Thank you and God bless.
Thanks for strengthening my conviction towards the home schooling. Some of the questions I have is
1. How would you decide the syllabus/curriculum to be taught.
2. How confident are you that you and your wife can pull up teaching multiple subjects and how will you test how much your son has understood these concepts.
I feel it's a continuous learning process for you as well. Please keep us posted on your home schooling strategies regularly.
@teja rk you can design your curriculum according to your goal. If your child has interest in are/painting give him resources and information so s/he can be artist. If s/he likes interacting with people he may be presenter or youtuber.
2. As you are not teaching your native language s/he learning by listening. Let him/her listen new information. You are not teaching walking s/he is imitating you.
3. Test is ment for to know how much child has understood. But you can see actually how much s/he is able to apply in real life, that is more important.

Simple , dont think like school system. have the syllabus as per ur child needs
Syllabus - pick up any board syllabus. I use NCERT books (- doctored subjects like history) as a guideline. Focus should be on learning. Syllabus is only a guide to take you through it. But don't get stuck with syllabus. Feel free to go out of syllabus when the child wants to learn more. For example, I introduced trigonometry and calculus to my 13 year son because he is interested in 3D and AI.
2. How much time is needed - I have been spending 2 hours a day on average. The fact that I had been working from home for last 12 years helped.
3. How to test - mostly the conversations we have on various subjects tells me how much he is picking up from academic studies. I don't hesitate giving him a "test" when needed.

I would like to ask , how do you rely so much on the marks based schooling that a person acquiring the highest marks only can know everything, and how is it that a person who grows up to be a singer or player or swimmer is tested on the same question paper as one aspiring to become a doctor or a CA or an engineer
In Bengaluru CBSE and ICSE schools, there is a big scam of skipping 8th or 9th grade completely except math and science which will be taught in special summer classes in Mar-Jun. Then 10th grade is studied for two years. This is all done just for "Exam marks in 10th" !

@@cutieandsweetievlogs2475 it's been a really long time. Not much of a difference that I can recall now. We skipped classes for 8th other than Maths. That way we completed our class 10th syllabus just a few months entering into class 10th. So while I was in class 10th we were just giving preboard exams from August/September-Feb. Fortunately I cleared all my exams by November/December so I was free after that.
My school had a really strict grading system that and unless you pass in all the subjects you'll have to continue taking extra classes until February
This happens even in West Bengal specially in Darjeeling district.
Ohhh... This is shocking... I'm from ICSE... bt my school started with 10th syllabus only after we entered 10th..not even special classes..btw mine is not a city school...

I agree with everything that you've said, but there is a lot of learning outside the classroom and curriculum in a public school. Friends, classmates, and the bonds children make in the process lead to extremely valuable lessons. You learn to interact with people, understand how others think, what drives them. In a public school you learn about other children their backgrounds, how that impacts their thought process. In exams, though most of what you're learning might mean nothing, you learn to handle stress, understand what makes you productive, learn to effectively collaborate. There is so much more that schools teach, discipline, empathy, team work through sports, and a sense of being a part of a group(a class, a section, a school maybe) which are all valuable drivers for personality growth.
Cannot agree more. I feel the pressure from the society is what drives us into school. Its good that your wife is understanding the reality and being supportive of your decision.
Hi Akash, I also have an idea for alternative schooling.
10 years ago, I applied for English test in British Council as mandated by my employer. There was huge difference on how they assess language proficiency compared to our schools. I felt their method was very practical and scientific way.
There were mainly 4 areas - Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking.
Our schools focus only on writing skills in exams which can be acquired through reading or listening to the classroom teaching. Listening and speaking are grossly neglected in our system.
For listening exam, they played an audio of people discussing during a meeting, and then questions appeared.
For reading, some news articles from popular newspapers were shown and questions followed.
For speaking, random topic was given to talk about for 3 minutes and questions followed.
Writing was same as our system.
Coming to My idea, its -
1. Instead of having 6 subjects fixed for an academic year, we need to have flexible system that supports any pace of learning. There is no limit on number of subjects you can choose at any point of time.
2. Every subject is divided on a scale of 15 level. Level 1 starting with basics and level 15 equivalent to Bachelor on the subject.
For example, Maths at level 1 starts with numbers and Maths at Level 15 = advanced calculus etc.
Similarly, English at level 1 starts with alphabets, level 15 - Bachelor in English equivalent.
3. Any student can drop any subject at any level anytime whenever the student finds it difficult to continue.
For example, a student completed and stopped education in English at Level 6, Math at level 8, Social at Level 10 etc.
There is no hard and fast rule like present system where all move in sync together.
Advantage here is that students can pursue only those subjects which they find it interesting.
Another advantage is that student who want to become Historian need not study Math.
4. Most importantly student will have choice to resume from the level he dropped a subject at any point in his/her lifetime.
Suppose a student stopped English at level 6, 10 years later, he/she can resume from level 6 at any point of time in lifetime and continue till highest possible levels.
5. All exams are conducted by Government twice in a year. There is no compulsion of attending schools.
Home schooling, private schooling are also accepted. Only assessment is universal. This is to build confidence for future employers.
6. Employment requirements will be like "Candidate should have cleared English minimum Level 7, Maths Level 12, Coding Level 10.
Similarly for higher education.
7. Language - These should be assessed on four skillset seperately- Reading, Listening, writing and speaking.
8. Importantly - Sex education - Mandatory to be completed before age of 18 but can be nominated at any age from 12 to 18 and by anyone (self, parents or teachers).
Wow that sounds so awesome 😍😍 if implemented, there will be drastic changes in the education system

This system is not possible to implement in India due to over population & lack of resources. As it increases the cost of study. Private institutions made education a business so they look every aspect from their own profit side. One thing can be implemented immediately by govt . Assessment for Home schooling & private students which can make homeschooling easy . As Indian colleges do not give addmission if the student is not cleared 12th class board exam (from any board). Even IIT doesn't give addmission such students who have excellent CV but not cleared 10th or 12th board exams .

What you have detailed is more or less what for 11th &;12th IB/ International Baccalaureate follows- an interest based flexible selection of subjects which are either at standard or advanced level. Plus there are other subjects like CAS - creativity, activity, service . It's across the world but in India schools with international boards like IB & A Levels GCE are really high cost

It's most important skill to know to grow ur own food also know how plants life work and animal life work n also weather patterns.

I come across ur video when exactly my wife and I were talking about homeschooling vs conventional schooling! U added most logical aspect to every point! Please come up with a video on challenges with home schooling vs conventional schooling along with financial figures for 12 years
I always admire your video. About this video I had a comment how about the kids should be given a chance to explore both the traditional schooling and the home tutoring options and then he/she picks what they like. Because I feel you proposing the same mistake what many parents have been doing already, deciding what's good for their kid without letting the kid have an actual opinion of his/her own.
I agree to you 100% even we discuss this amongst ourselved but still it is hard to muster the courage to not send our son to a traditional school. Kudos to you guys to have taken a road less travelled. All the best

This was an eye opening video. I totally mean it when I say that Zayn is actually a very lucky kid to have parents who actually care more about skill development than marks. Lots of best wishes to Zayn:)
But it is difficult for lower middle class family to adopt home schooling. Very few section of people could able to provide Home schooling.

Rightly said,the schools focus only on marks and not on skills teaching which is very essential in the future.
Nobody asks your marks during job interview but the skills that you have.
Recently I was discussing this topic with one of my friends who is thinking of home schooling her kid. One of the primary drawbacks we thought would be the lack of social skills in the absence of a school environment. Thank you so much Akshat for covering that and also making a video on this topic which is not quite commonly talked about in Indian context
i have few questions (Edit: all q were in general context but i do think that given the background and knowledge of akshat sir homeschooling might be a better option for him and these are just counter ques that arose in my mind hope it doesnt sound like a hate comment , i just wanted to know as it seems pretty interesting hope akshat sir makes a follow back video on how exactly the process of homeschooling looks like )
1. Wouldn't he be missing out on a bunch of extracurricular activities which can be done in school like debates, mun, dramatics, school trips being a part of the school council, events organized by schools, workshops?
2. Wouldn't zayn be missing out on making permanent friends and relationships (maybe in the future) as a large portion of time for regular school going students is spent in school even enrolling him in a bunch of different classes could only bring short interactive sessions with a bunch of different people
3. How would you structure a long 12-year education on your own as you will be teaching him yourself wouldn't it be very hard
4. There are many more like if there is no exam how would he get a sense of what competitive spirit is and how to work under exam pressure situation leave this but learning from khan academy is good no doubt but research by some ivy league(Harvard I guess) showed that classroom-based learning is better than seeing recorded lectures as kid learn more by engaging and using these apps creates a digital dependency on child
one last thing that many people excel while going to school, spending their school time in exploring and doing a bunch of other things and academic studies at home so why do you think is the schooling system an obstacle while things can be achieved even with it we have many examples

These are some great questions on homeschooling system as the sole responsibility of nurturing and educating a kid lies on parents. It needs close monitoring and lots of micro management and parents should actively participate into it.
Point 2 is a big question for me too
For point 2: Honestly, It all depends on the person. I have friends whom I know for 4 years and trust them blindly and on the contrary I hardly remember some of my school friends. Time is definately a factor for long lasting relationships but not an only factor

Extra curriculum like hell, the school nowadays gives lots of homework, my cousin she is not getting any time for other activities due to too much home and pressure to get high marks, do not forget about bullying in school is more common because kids are usually highly immature in younger age and might end up hurting someone without realisation. I wish my parent would have chosen home school too. I liked sports but didn't get time for it after 8th due to excessive stupid homework that was just copy-paste.
I closely follow many financial content in YT. Being a researcher I really like the way you place a point precisely with facts and figures without any drama.
Keep posting such insightful videos. I am not happy with the way school impart knowledge.

I got 52% in 12th but Im doing all OK as a designer because I loved doing cretives things like drawing, sketching, painting etc. So my education didn’t affect how much I earn. I developed my skills and doing good right now from my point of view, this happened only and only because I have extremely supportive parents and I plan to do the same for my daughter. She just started going to school but I have made a promise to myself that her marks or rank wont affect who she becomes in life. Its going to be about find her passion and if she wants she can pursue that or something else altogether. Its her life, she will live it her way.

Loved your reply, my daughter is is 5th grade in IGCSE board, and I really hate a few subjects that teach all unwanted stuff and is super stressful and heavy for such small kids, despite being an English communication coach myself, I see that the syllabus focusses only on extensive deepest grammar terminologies that scares kids to the core, as they don't pick the enormous stupid syllabus and score low, the class teacher herself checks Google many times. I picked English very well despite being a ssc student. I think I made a bad choice, but I feel this is a problem of all boards in India. The education system just puts unnecessary pressure in learning unwanted things and needs to be revamped. I am very sure, I will not let my kid fall in this trap to unnecessary be pressured. I guarantee I will make her the best version of herself irrespective of whatever she scores.
By the way I got 57 in tenth and 52 in 12th...and we think alike too

Delighted to hear your thoughts on this. You are on to something. And that something is the future. I am an architect who designs learning environments, and the recursive question for us is how to break out of the challenges of curriculum! Maybe schools of the future will be no schools. Maybe they will still exist physically but evolve into places that are finally 'for' our children and their best interests rather than servants of curriculum, logistics and economics. Best wishes.

I think you are doing a wonderful job with your videos ! However on this topic I thought exactly like you : but two years back we put our twin sons into a not for profit school: I feel ur approach would turn into helicopter parenting and could be over bearing for the child . Human and peer interaction cannot be achieved in small bouts of interaction during the those extra curriculum classes u mentioned . I also feel schools are also changing and you should look at an IB or O level school to see their approach to teaching and curriculum. On the language front I think it’s an excellent that you start as early as possible cause kids are geniuses when it comes to language till they are about eight or so ! Again love ur content !

Why not both? Have him enrolled in a school but never put the pressure of marks on him.. just tell him to enjoy and learn as much as possible. The rest of skills can be developed during the weekends or evenings too

Agree. Examine, rate, benchmarking/ranking are normal steps to evaluate performance. What's wrong in that?
The problem is over emphasizing a small test result by parents, teacher, and society as a large. Any test result brings you the opportunity to know the gaps understanding, preparation, etc. And not taking it positively.
Schools, khan academy, private tuitions are ways to get learning. SAT, Board exams are testing systems. Even if you go to school or not, you will have to go thorough the testing. And tehr also you will get marks.
What will you do then? Boycott exams?

As I used to get judgement not on the basis of my creativity but on the basis of marks I scored.Please make such types of videos so that the future generation should know that there is such concept like home schooling still exist. And more focus should be given upon acquiring skills.
I am in full support of this approach. There are many genius examples in the world with such teaching method. I just hope in coming years college's become more open to this. I am trying to study how I can bring up my kids like this

Yesterday I was discussing this at lunch with my family. Definitely very, very valid arguments in favor. Actually I want to take my 3 kids on a full year sabaticall trip during their teens, since I believe that will teach them much more than many other things. Keep up the great work on these videos!

I am a teacher at a private school and I can relate to everything you just said. That's the sad reality of the conventional schooling system. I have been in conflict with myself for a couple of years about being a part of it all and have wanted to leave my job.. which led me to investing..which led me to you 😄 I love my job as a teacher and put more effort into skill building but we teachers hardly have the autonomy to work that way. We end up projecting marks more than intelligence and skills. In my opinion, you have taken the best, well-researched decision for little Zayn. All the best! 😊👍
Here is my point of view:
Sending to school at the age of 3 year or not sending him school at all, both are extreme points, we should rather find a balance in between.
Interrupting child's natural development of brain is most absurd thing this generation is doing, what i will prefer if i will be having kid in future, that i will let him grow till the age of 8-10 years without pressure to develop any skills, rather i will try to tell him about how to develop any skill,how to be physically and mentally fit and stable, then after if he wants to go to school or develop skills on his pace its his choice.

What about peer bonding, working in groups, playing team sports, theatre and so on which build a child’s overall personality???

People getting out of schools are not smart enough to talk fluently and have that sort of personality and make an impact anyway especially in India. You need people to communicate and make bonds and understand social behaviour, not school. The right word is people. And there are tons of ways to do that.
Now a days, most of the schools are run in commercial complexes, maybe 1st, 2nd floors. Where's playground to play?

Agreed that schools are going to be outdated soon, but the social aspect of sending your kid to school is critical. They learn about culture, diverse backgrounds, real world competition and survival skills
May be in dreams nothing happens like that it's a rat race nothing else

Some kids may thrive with 3 hours of group extra curricular or just playing with other kids, but just think about it personally, who are your closest friends? Are they the ones you went to school / college with, or are they the ones you work with, or are they people you shared a dance class with or played basketball with. Schooling systems takes up 12 to 14 years of life and doesn't provide much learning with respect to different skill sets.
Homeschooling is a very good option but only because you are going to be the one overseeing it.

Very nice approach Akshat...Basically Education is good but its good for the schools management... It might be gearing up to the 3rd largest profitable business hr after Politics and Bollywood being the 1st two. The idea of yours of focusing on the skillset is exactly what the corporate requires or even if a child wants to pursue his interests. This will make him perfect in at least 1 skill and all family will save time and money together. Today's schooling is an absolute waste creating Jack of all trends, king of none.

I'm a single dad and I just am so elated that someone else has similar views to what I have and I'm trolled by many around. Since the pandemic hit us financially I have been pondering the similar mindset may be due to a different reason but you made a lot of sense

These are some great insights. It really takes a lot of courage to speak against a conventional system.
But regarding this how do you expect a student currently in this formal education system who wants to get out can explain this to their families. Since there is a lot of peer pressure and comparisons like the neighbour's kid was successful doing this or your brother sister turned out fine.

I am totally against the education system in India. It has done no good for my professional life. I never thought this could be possible but not I can think about it. Great video BTW.

I have also found schools highly stifling. Childhood is the time when the mind is most responsive to learning and schools largely waste that potential with their ratta culture. Plus, critical life skills required for emotional well-being are completely ignored.
The whole idea of schools is objectifying child’s achievements. Which is also limitation because it is already assumed that you can’t raise or ask questions beyond your teacher intellect.
This is a very good point. Teachers in India are not comfortable with being proven wrong or even argued against. So archaic.

Reg schools, I never wanted my child to go through the Indian schooling system. It does more harm than good. But I didn't have the courage nor support to take an alternate route. Was great to listen to your views and I 100% agree.

Completely agree. Have been thinking the same since my child came into the world. Unfortunately, neither myself nor my wife would able to spare justified time for her self education. But I do plan to do weekly/bi-weekly checks and not just focus on marks but on her understanding and learnings.
I believe there are certain aspects that are irreplaceable when it comes to going to school- developing a competitive spirit, learning to deal with bullying, managing your time, being disciplined, helping out your peers, appreciating diversity, developing respect for your teachers and getting to know them as human beings, and even eating your lunch sneakily during classes, it's all an essential part of growing up which cant be measured in terms of ROI. These things shape your overall personality.
The solution lies in being responsible parents by not putting pressure on your kids to achieve marks. It's okay if your kid ends up getting 60% , don't ask him to aim for 95%. Instead, tell him to invest his remaining time in sports, extracurricular, new skill learning, no one can take that away from him, if you decide it's okay for him to be a 60%er but learning (other skills) shouldn't stop. That's where your responsibility of wise parenting comes in!

- (persnaly I never exprienced positive competitive spirit IN SCHOOL)
- how many students in a class really take it positively? : 10-15%
learning to deal with bullying -
- school is the last place a child will get bullied, at least my school was sort of safe place. i delet with it outside school much more than in school
managing your time -
- school is not the only place you learn to manage your time
- how many students actually learn to manage time effectively by the time they pass 10th : may be 15-25%
being deciplined -
- how many 10 passed students are actually deciplined : i dont need to tell you, just watch people brake trafic rules all the time
- i just dont see it working
helping your peers -
- school is not the only place you interact with other people
appreciating diversity -
- for most of the people in india (other than in few metro cities) everyone in their class is from same religion, cast and economical background
- whereas you get more diversity outside of your school
developing respect for your teachers -
- for me having respect for someone just because he/she is your tecacher is just useless
even eating your lunch sneakily during classes -
- i dont think this is essential part of growing up
- for me having time to play outside is more essential but may be schools want kids to copy some garbage 10 times as homework insted
Best to choose between bouts of home schooling during the early years and a bit of formal education during the high school age

I think after 9th class or so .....home schooled kids can be send to school to balance their learnings .
Here is my rationale behind home schooling:
- The experience that a kid has, when they interact with different kinds of teachers and students (supporting them and those who are mean) , gives a very big life lesson. The kid builds his personality through these experiences.
- Being punctual and respecting the school's regulations instills a sense of time management and conformity.
- The kid learns to differentiate mentors from bosses.
- A child should not be devoid of the sweet experiences of bunking classes, pranks with friends, etc. These are the memories that one cherishes forever.
- When I was in school, our curriculum had all the possible subjects and I was fascinated by a few subjects and the others were just important, which I didn't realise as a kid.
- Studying in co-ed also has an effect on a child's personlities and the adolescent years.
- When I was about to join school, I used to cry for missing my parents. But I had to learn it the tough way. Im not sure if that will be possible in home schooling.
The school fees obviously shouldn't burn a hole in the parents' pockets, but it's importance cannot be nullified altogether, imo.
Adding to that, the role of parents is extremely crucial even if the child is going to school. The parents should connect with the child not only regarding the subjects taught in school, but regarding his/her experience as well.
NOTE: This is not a hate comment. This is just my opinion on the topic. I'm sure Akshat would have thought of various aspects and planned out accordingly.
Completely agree with your comments. Personally, I don't agree with not sending child to school. India as of today is one of the most powerful human resource in the world.

Till sixth standard, one can avoid school
There are Pros n Cons in each system, but I think from my own n my siblings example that to majority of the students in a class the Cons in an Indian school system far outweighs the Pros. So as a parent if I can manage the Cons in home-schooling, the the Pros in it far out weighs the cons, especially in day's world n the future. However, only time would tell.
Agree with you completely, it would be of great help, if you could discuss in detail, a layout plan we can adopt to implement it practically.

The knowledge dispensed in schools is cleverly designed to make you competent enough to do the clerical job but not intelligent enough to question the absurd status quo.
That being said, it is in schools we learn social skills and ready ourselves for competition and physical hardships.
Great Content! If the kid goes to school but the parents keep reminding the kid to not care about marks and focus on skills and social development, do you think it's possible to get the best of both worlds?
Even I have the same thought. I am soon going to become a father and was pondering upon the thought of home schooling from a long long time. I might take this middle path too. Just reminding the kid that he/she just needs to pass and not get into the rat race would help.
