  • In this video, I talk about important aspect of indian education system, which is the No Detention Policy (NDP). I will tell you why the no detention policy implemented in 2009 helped improve india's education system. And how our present government wants to remove this NDP.

Government should focus on infrastructure and teacher training. It's not easy to get opportunity to study for children of people of rural areas, workers of unorganised sector , girls, SCs, STs. As your data suggests. On that removal of no detention policy further demotivate the parents and children's.

As far as I understood from your analysis that NDP is going to induce more critical and analytical thinking among students which will improve the quality of education and on the other hand now u are saying that it won't change. I am now a bit confused what you really want to say? can you elaborate what do you mean by root causes for quality of education.

    • @SumitSharma-gv2gr

Mr. Rather, I've passed out my 10th from CBSE board in 2018 and I want to tell something about my experience, upon which you should ponder.
    1. The detention policy made students not to study at all. I'm in a govt. school now(in 11th) and the students of my class can't even read simple English textbook.
    2. I was also in CCE system until 9th class and suddenly the system changed, which made me study more efficiently (though I couldn't score much but still, I have a broader horizon than my seniors).
    3. Though the passing percentage came down last year but those who have passed are not satisfied because their expectations were high as they thought that their marks will also be upgraded as in CCE system.

I disagree a bit with you.
The data you have shown for 10th class pass percentage from 88% in 2009 to 98% in 2012 is more linked to new grading system introduced in 2010 rather than NDP.
Is NDP responsible for school dropouts? -- YES
Does NDP lead to loss of human resource? -- YES
But the new system of CCE (Continous and Comprehensive Evaluation) is not implemented properly. You talked about CBSE, but quality and knowledge of students with state boards in Government Schools, after NDP, have been degraded to such a low level that students of 8th standard can't even do basic arithmetic. They don't come to school or study properly as they know they will get passed to next class no matter how poor or hard they study. This philosophy in students makes them unproductive in the academic arena. Obviously, such cases aren't seen in private schools where parents and teachers take the education of children seriously but students of public schools are real victims of NDP.
What should be the real solution to this problem?
-- Ensuring good quality of education in schools, especially public schools. The steps taken by Delhi government are plausible.
-- The economic conditions of poor families need to be improved so that there are no dropouts due to the economic condition of families which can also increase child labour. Mid-day meal policy can be extended to secondary education.
-- Scholarships or some other monetary help can be provided to students of poor families.
-- Education should be delivered in vernacular languages for tribal students who often leave school as they can't understand the mode of knowledge delivery.
-- Separate skill centres should be linked with schools to provide them vocational training as all students aren't interested in education after 10th/12th or for higher education.

Viral Shot even my family member is a government employee in education sector. He complains about the fact that students don't come to school regularly, still we have to pass them despite low attendance and when the same students get into higher classes, they still are unable to do basic addition. 2009 to 2012 data just tells us about the no detention effect on students which were being detained earlier. There should be no detention but the present CCE system cannot ensure that they will have all round development. What if they get into class 9th and start failing miserably year after year?
A child should be exposed to mind grinding activities in education, not detaining them will make their condition more deplorable. There has to be a better check mechanism.

You're forgetting the fact that everything that's taught in school now is just meant to make every kid discouraged of being creative while the very books we read are carefully put together to turn a group of individuals into a similar thinking crowd. They're taught to conform and as for permission for doing things, every morning the patriotic anthem, how kids become used to being in a crowd and start adjusting themselves to fit into that very crowd. Its creates an atmosphere where being the odd one out is considered bad and discouraged , even though everyone's different.

True.. I teach mathematics to kids upto 10th.. They all come from a reputed school of my city but some of them are so dumb that they can't even do basic algebra which is taught at class 5 , the reason is this no detention policy. When they don't even deserve to study in class 6 they are in class 8 and struggling with the problems because they don't know the basics by which the problem could be solved , Few days ago I gave them a class 5 book to learn basics first , but now they feel ashamed to ask questions from class 5 book.. It would have been better if they were stopped at class 5 only , first learn then go forward.. No detention policy should be immediately scrapped.
And in 2010 98% students passed from CBSE because of introduction of grading system and not because of this.

I don't think its exams or the marks that matter, what matters is 'what is taught' and 'how it is taught' .
In our country, people are taught 5 questions and for the exams one of them is tested, but in countries with best educational system they are taught to answer the 6th question which may require knowledge of every other questions.

The RTE has actually brought a major change in education statistics to many states in India. Drop out rates are controlled, admissions have increased, pass percentage and mean has risen. Even the public schools have made to allocate 25% seats for students with limited financial capacities.
I'm afraid if detention would be applied, the students from weaker sections of the society would have the biggest impact.

Also , there are many other ways to reduce exam pressue . Things such as counselling and guidance will not just help them to curb the exam pressure but also enable them to handle life problem in future . Removing exams is not a way out as ultimately students will have to face so many other problems in their lives after their school . thus they must be prepared to fight the problems rather than creating an unreal environment for them by removimg exams .

  • @RankitGodara
    @RankitGodara 6 ปีที่แล้ว +35

Respectfully, I don't agree with you totally. I agrre that this policy have drastically helped the children in decreasing the dropout rates. But the data suggested by you of the CBSE for 10th class can not be used to determine that the students have rightly done in there first exam that is 10th as there were no exams before that. This data can not be used because with this policy CBSC also started a policy of home Board examination for 10th class. When i was in 12th, my computer teacher used give the 10th students grade arbitrarily on all the CCE like sports and other things, So even if a student was failed in theory there was no way he could fail in 10th. Even once our administrator told us that in a cbse board meeting at panchkula, they were having a meeting because few students jumped of from top of there house because of result so no student will be failed in exam of physics. He mentioned that these were exact words that students should not be failed.... Now some people will argue that why the some of them were failed than. So, to answer that, CBSE said that students can opt for board exams if they want of they can stay in home board examination, therefore the excess failure happened in those board exams. And some few who were not at all good were failed in home boards too.
What i think is that NDP is not a solution to this problem, Yes it have done great in slowing down dropout rate. But it creates the problem of kids not being serious or at all interested in things that should be done at schools. I am not against playing and other extra carriculum activities that they promoted with CCE but these all things were on paper.
To my knowledge best thing to stop dropouts is counselling. One counsellor, who is well equipped with knowledge of counselling and have a degree for it should be appointed at every school. That is the right solution.

This is the first video I disagree with Druv. I am a teacher and give home tuitions to children from class 6 - 10, and I have been giving tuitions since 2002. Ever since this policy has been implemented, I have seen a drastic decline in children's performance. They are not taking studies as seriously as we used to do in the 90's. They know they will pass even if they dont study. Taking the overall percentage into consideration and not just final exam marks is a good thing but not detaining stupid and naughty kids is unfair on the ones who are really taking the time to study and working hard for getting good marks. If all the data in the world was so accurate, then the whole world would rely on data and not look at the reality.

sir, i am a great follwer of your vedios and i completely agree to what you say... but here, i think we have a different opinion...I am myself a teacher and my mother was also a punjab govt lecturer... The ground reality is something very different... this system has deteriorated the quality of education since its applications... The teachers are bound to pass a child in his primary classes and in villages, the children of 9th are even unable to write ABCD.. this becomes a nightmare for the teachers as the standard of 9th is much higher in comparison to 8th... So if you say that the children drop off, its just the incompetent ones sustain longer,, hence the same child drops in 9th.. So no advantage... also he/she who availed all government facilities adds nothing other than burden.. The quality of city school education also reduced as now the students think that its ok to not study... Hence... on number, we generate high number of litrate people,, but the quality of literacy is very poor... Lets be more analytical, this is a possibility that a huge section of students drop out from 9th because of their incapacity and thus only the compitant students are able to reach 10th... Thus more % students pass in boards... Another point is that because the primary teachers know that students are bound to get promoted, they also dont teach.. Hence THE GROUND REALITY IS THAT A MOJOR SECTION OF PRIMARY GOVT SCHOOL TEACHERS TAKE SALARY EVERY MONTH AND TEACH NOTHING THROUGH THE YEAR... Darwin once said- "survival of the fittest" so why are we generating infit dependent students using this mechanism??? I expect you read this comment and react to it...
    -regards

FOR EVERYONE WHO IS WATCHING THIS VIDEO 📹.
Druv Rathee, you always show one side of a coin. Watch the javedkar sir's full video on RSTv. No detention policy is only making our students and teachers unaccountable. India is the only country in the world having highest number of enrollment but our class 5th students can't read class 3rd book 📙 and class 6th student can't do class 4th maths problems. This is the result of No Detention policy. Are you still happy with this. 😕 Dont become a roadblock by signing petitions against No DETENTION POLICY.
👉 Most of the people who watch your videos and support you blindly are fools.
👉 NCERT will half its syllabus by next session. Then it will be easy for students to pass their exams in 5th and 8th.
👉 With no detention policy we are producing only unemployable youth.

This is one of the few videos where I do not agree with your views, though I do appreciate your efforts. However I thought it was imperative to put forward my thoughts so that it compells you to reconsider your stand on this issue. It is a well known fact that quality of education system in India has been downgrading year by year. Just to give you an example, my Grandfather was born during British rule and he completed his education for 11 years. Despite this, he could very well converse in English, he was good at Mathematics and his overall acumen was way above average. As compared to him, my Dad who was born in mid 60s is a Graduate, doesn’t converse in English (he understands it). Coming to me, I have completed my Post graduation and I had to take extra efforts to excel in certain areas. To be fair, speaking English is not a thumb rule to gauge education, but it can give a clear picture regarding quality of the same.
Also to point out, in your videos like Best state in India and India being No.1 in crime against women, you have stated that data is not always accurate. In a similar fashion, data regarding education cannot be considered reliable. If you actually visit a school, you will understand the ground reality. Students from 8th or 9th class do not understand basic mathematical rules, are poor in languages and communication skills and only few students are ambitious about their future.

I think 2012 board exam of CBSE must have been very easy. Facts and data are not always great to judge something, I also have given 10th exam in 2012 but from ICSE board and trust me NDP doesn't even matters to students, what matter to them is their class topper, family topper, elder cousin pursuing MBA or Btech from IIT and parents expectations resulting into pressure. NDP might reduce the pressure a little but then students will be more dumb than now.

Sir My mom has been teaching in government school since last 5 years and what they told me that students are not taking studies seriously due to no pressure of getting failed and when students got failed in 10th class exam ,at that time My mom have to have answer to higher authorities for students bad result.I am not doubting on your research but this is the reality which I have observed regarding this policy.

Hi sir I was your fan but in this topic I think you are illusioned . The no detention policy has a very bad effect on our students. As they know they won't fail so they don't study . students get very reluctant and don't give a shit about studies. They somehow pass till eighth grade but when they have to appear for the board exams they fail. They don't even know the alphabets properly. Even if the teacher wants to detain a student he can't because of this no detention policy. I've seen many of my cousin failing ninth exams because they passed till eighth without any exams or study. And about the statistics I don't know about the statistics but students suffer ,they leave schools after failing ninth. A teacher can't teach counting to a ninth grade student.Thats the truth. If the student anyhow passes the boards with his memory power but won't make a good citizen in the future.
p.s: my respect for you grew lesser.

Stats he showed were just of CBSE and in 2010 pass percentage increased because of CCE pattern . He calls it because of no detention .. Sometimes I feel his other stats are biased too but because of lack of knowledge , we firmly believe whatever he has to say.

I just began watching videos of Dhruv Rathee, been a week or so.. I came across one and was impressed, watched few more of my interest. But among all those, this one is the worst. An average educated adult who has been in touch with school/students in any way, be it his work, his own children or otherwise can throw more light on the pros and cons of today's education practices including the no detention policy than this video does.
      Highly disappointing and skewed.
