- Eddy Zhong, successful technology entrepreneur, dives into the truth behind our K-12 education system. Eddy strongly believes that the education system diminishes creativity and confines children to a certain path towards success. He contends that kids are taught to believe college is a necessary step in life and that it is mandatory to achieve one's goals. His talk challenges the commonly held beliefs of our entire education structure. Eddy is the founder of Leangap, a summer program that helps high school students start their own companies
Eddy is an aspiring technology entrepreneur and the founder of Blanc, a smart-watch company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His ideas have been featured in numerous publications and he is passionate about empowering youth to think differently. This is why public schoolers laugh at homeschoolers for being dumb and yet those homeschoolers probably are more happy and successful now.
+The Great Papyrus (CoolSkeleton95) Kids are cruel, however you do learn more for social advancement
What kind of dumbasses laugh at homeschoolers? Less busywork, one single teacher who can actually focus more on yourself rather than having to micromanage 200 kids and they probably actually manage to learn something from it.
Example First Name Example Last Name conformity is the worst crime happened on this Earth.
Pug Ieve That's the average line from an indoctrinated person. The socialization going on in schools is terrible. My teacher literally destroyed my dream to be an artist. She basically said you can never be an artist because you don’t paint/draw using basic rules. And she was right, I never became an artist, because she killed it in me.

@@rainxx1 “who asked” doesn’t apply in this because the commenter is sharing a personal anecdote to support a relevant point made in the video.
For clarity, “who asked” is typically reserved for comments involving anecdotes that are both completely unrelated to the topic at hand and brings little to no educational or entertainment value to the discussion… which this comment clearly isn’t doing.
I hope in the future your dreams of becoming an artist will reignite again
because there are tons of artist that have a low point in their lives because of someone hurting them and putting them down but they get right back up
Even though they have every reason to give up there's always something or someone like their love ones that helps them to not give up on their dreams
And if you still love to draw to paint and draw then maybe you can still achieve your dreams (:

My dad once explained to me that if I got good grades all the time, and if I already knew everything, I'd feel like there'd be no more room to grow or improve myself, so he taught me to always use a bad grade or report as a learning experience. That's very true and insightful, but why does my C in algebra and chemistry make me feel and look like a failure if all I need to do is "do better?" I can't even really find what it is I'm doing wrong with my work, and I'm constantly trying to play catch up so that I can at least understand what the rest of the kids in my class are talking about, and I find myself sacrificing my time to do what I really love and want to pursue, like drawing and music, because I feel a constant desire to not "fail" all my classes. Maybe it's my time management or my mental state, but school really feels like it screws kids over a lot of the time. The American education system needs to change to accompany kids' abilities to be creative, critical, and collaborative, instead of drilling into our brains that the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.
Then what about Indian education system

Mile Dobrić we've now got a new system in our school where we have to work together instead of just listening to our teacher
At my school the only opinions taught by the teachers are in health class. They don't tell me to go to college but instead listen to what I want to do and say what college course I should take that would be best for that job. For some jobs like a video game developer they specifically say not to go into college and instead become an apprentice at a video game company so we get real life experience.
Mile Dobrić Exactly
I think one problem with school is that they expect us to fit their molds, and for us to do what they think is right, instead of helping us find our mission, not theirs.
When I was in high school, I was always disappointed, not in myself, but the school system, how narrowminded everybody was, how lacking in creativity, and how everybody would do almost the exact same thing every day and act like each day was different

Totally agreed. In highschool and college I became really good at math. I was acing all my tests and exams and I felt good about myself. It wasn't until I was in the real world I realized how little of it I could actually apply.
I spent all this time learning how to manipulate and work with equations and problems that were neatly organized and tied in a bow for me to unravel. With zero training how to model these equations from real world data, how to figure out what relevant information you need to solve the problem and how to acquire it.
It felt like my whole life education was holding a nail for me and only training me how to swing a hammer to drive in the nail in straight. Then I got into the real world and realized I have no idea where to get the nail from, where to place it, how to hold it for myself and how to incorporate it into the problem that is a house I'm trying to build.
Then you go into the world and you're asked "well what do you know how to build ?" and you realize all you know how to do is swing a hammer and you're severely underprepared.

But when we come to college is that we learn our value and understand we are more capable than what we think about us. This is the sad reality of schools
I learned more from TH-cam than school
School doesn’t teach you the real world.

English is my second language and I can tell you that 85% of the words or phrases I learnt are from youtube and random books in my home instead of books from the school. (Including the word phrase)
Same I learned English from watching movies context clues, watching vids on YT, playing random games, listening to western songs etc
I know that this is off topic (I think).
My vocabulary increased or got better because of Wattpad-
ooh about this
English is my second language, and i'm pretty much your case too
you know, isn't the purpose of language being able to use it? those English we learn in class is just so unpractical. i wonder why hadn't they modified it already
@osu591 well about useless grammar structures im not sure, i do actually use the grammar like "i had known that..." or "i wish i were in that place..." which are in the textbook
SombR3ro idk if somebody already said this but apparently a person from a Kpop group learned English from watching friends
Watched this 5 yrs ago and I'm here watching it again because now I think I will learn more deeply.
Go Eddy! So glad you found your path. I agree with you wholeheartedly - and I'm a teacher! I see kids come to school so wide-eyed and excited to learn, and all too often school just kills that in kids. We need to encourage kids to think outside the box. We need to LISTEN to kids. And we need to tap into their natural passion and curiosity. We will never have happy, satisfied, motivated and innovative people if we don't change our approach. I've been fighting the system from within for almost 40 years now. Creativity needs to be valued and encouraged. I hope I get a chance to do a TED talk about why creativity matters.
In school, it's more about copying skills than actually learning them.
Teaching you obedience...😵

You should suggest it. Really.

so true especially my english teacher
Watching this in 2024 makes me feel like a baby
I find this very true and it's a sad fact how creativity is crushed in our current school systems. I know many people who took art GCSE and from most of them I have heard how much they hate it, and people who used to draw all the time don't even want to be creative after they have finished their GCSEs because of how much time stress there was for the art course. It's terrible.

I'm homeschooling my kids, with an unschooling slant. I get asked all the time about "socialization" yet I remember being told MANY times by teachers that I was not there to socialize!!
I learn stuff in school then forgot it like 1 week after :/
Exactly, this system feeds on grades and obedience. In school everything you learn is IRRELEVANT in the real world. The only reason we learn a lot of useless information is because of the tests we have to take over, and over, and over again. If you think about it, it almost makes it seem like the system is creating a false reality, essentially brainwashing kids to believe it is their destiny, but that simply isn't true!
Browser Option yeah agreeable
imagine there are 10 chocolate bars in front of you, and lets say you only like 3, what school does is that it forces you to eat all of those chocolates and when it comes to the tests you just throw up the chocolates, it's the sad truth.

As someone who got mostly B's and A's... yeah. Although not said directly, schools are about indoctrinating, not educating or helping people to learn (the specifics of how learning, educating and indoctrination are different elude me at the moment). Granted, some of the information they teach you can be useful (like, how to disengage, crisis handling, CPR...oh wait. They usually don't teach you that sort of practical skill in school or college).
Yeah, but I don't judge them they're only doing what they where told to do and believe

i wrote this on my class board as "THOUGHT OF THE CENTURY".
I actually just read a story of a little boy who kept on getting in trouble for doodling in class. He would later be hired to cover the walls of a restaurant with his doodles. It's amazing how people's creativity can get them places at a young age, but also how school squashes that creativity and makes it so people are less successful.

school isn’t about learning it’s about passing
and at school ik everyone is afraid to raise their hand because kids will make fun of you
As a high school social studies teacher it's sad that I observe that. All the students that come into my class from previous schools and whatnot all behave the same. Afraid to answer a question or give a new or creative idea. I spend a lot of my time trying to undo that damage and get them comfortable enough with my classroom and their peers to be able to try new things and not be "afraid to fail" as it has come to be.
I've had too many students try to tell me to just give the information to pass the test and that's it. Where did this behavior get learned? The 16 year old in this video does bring a valid point to the debate table and your point only reinforces it.
@@kyleshubert2863 As a middle schooler, I think it's the grading system. For a lot of places a standardized test is %45 (or more) of your grade. We're afraid of failure or being wrong no matter what because the grade that is automatically forced onto us. If we don't know it, the teacher might think less of us and give us a lower grade. I think that starts from the fact that standardized tests are meant to show how much you memorized or didn't memorize, rather than how much you learn from what you knew before.
Or if by mistake I didn't understand what the teacher asked us to do, if I ask her again the teacher will go mad at me, be like "Why don't you pay attention?". This makes asking questions harder and that makes it impossible for students to learn things.
This is completely true. I once got a question wrong that I was so confident in, keep in mind I’m new to the school and very shy, and let’s say I was so embarrassed.
The main reason why I don’t raise my hand that often other than maths ( maths is easy af ) is because the teacher would make fun of me. For eg. In science I raised my hand because I was still confused and my teacher just ignored me. My arm got tired so I put my hand down and then a few minutes later my teacher picked me. I WAS ANGRYY ASF. He asked me a question even though I raised my hand he didn’t care he just started shouting at me that I wasn’t paying any attention. So I just left the room. They called my parents and they got mad at me. ALL BECAUSE OF MY SCIENCE TEACHER. HE WAS ENJOYING IT. SO THATS THE MAIN REASON WHY I DONT RAISE MY HAND THAT OFTEN. MY UNCLE NORMALLY HELPS ME ON SCH HW .ECT.

As an educator, I tell you that kids are questioning what are they gonna use all they learn in school for. So, we have to adapt the things we teach to real world situations, and also open our minds and ask them what they want to learn so they feel free and exited about future life.
Wow this is an incredibly amazing idea I wish my teachers were like that too cuz I also question the same why and what r we actually learning for?
I can create my own path. When I was child, I used to believe what my parent's chose would be the best for me, and school will help me success, but now I learn more on internet and try to try not to put myself in cages

I feel like school is just a test for how good we’ll work when they put us in jobs but they try and dress it up as learning and building the next generation
I lost interest in school at the age of 9. So much of what we learned was useless. After seeing how my own children fared in school, I firmly believe that home schooling and life have more to offer a developing mind than school. My self taught knowledge from years of reading history, philosophy and learning random arts and crafts has enabled me to become an oldie who can have an inspirational conversation with young people today. An oldie whose input on a wide variety of topics is sought each week, and I only went to school until year 10.
But how could you buy a house, have income?
I have worked for 50 years, raised a family and own my home. None of which relied upon knowing algebra, when Henry VIII created the church of England, or knowing and believing the mythology of my national history. Schools are for churning out useful workers for those who hold the purse strings. None of what is taught is done to broaden our minds or make us think.
