Oh, yeah, thats a really nice detail the VFX artists put in there. I also really like the bit in Picard where the warp nacelle gets sliced off, because thats what phasers canonically do. Disruptors and phasers are pretty much the same thing, but one is less precise and more "powerful" while the other is more of a scalpel, a precision weapon that can because of this also be used as a very effective tool, not just a weapon. Fitting for Starfleet. Both supposedly work by disrupting molecular bonds, which is also why they can just vaporize someone and why outside the shields ships are barely armored. Armor does not matter against phasers because most materials you could realistically make it from are just as susceptible to it as any other, or impact the effectiveness so little the extra mass is more detrimental than the benefit of what little amount of added protection it would grant. Also why in Star Trek the bridges position isn't all that important because with the way the weapons work burying it in the ship would only be marginally effective. Especially with the power plant that uses antimatter added in, that if destabilized turns the ship into it's constituent energy and particles.

I don't like those pew pew phasers we get in Picard, Discovery and the Kelvin timeline. I still want beams concerning both ships phasers and hand ones.
Both the Defiant and refit Enterprise used pulse phasers of one variety or another, however the sound design and visual impact helped sell the destructive nature of the weapons. Picard, Discovery, and the Kelvin timelines visual and sound design generally fails to achieve this, making it appear as if the ships are lobbing multi-colored droplets of rain at one another.
Nor should you. Kurtzman Trek's failure to adhere to the special history and look of Star Trek is one of the many reasons why his offerings suck. Instead of honoring the rich legacy of the franchise, he and his accomplice JJ Abrams have fought to undermine it by reducing it to the level of generic space franchise. The look, and sound, of his phasers could be from one of any of the generic sci-fi shows out there. It is shameful.
I agree with you, but burst phasers aren't new to Star Trek. The Motion Picture era films were burst phasers, albeit the effect looked almost beamlike, and the Enterprise-D's "antimatter spread", despite it's weird name, really just looked like they recalibrated the main dorsal phaser array to shoot pulses, like a big multitargeting turret. As for handheld weapons, the Type 3 phaser and the phaser compression rifle are seen across Voyager and the TNG movies firing both beams and pulses. I like Discovery just fine, but their phasers in seasons 1 and 2 sounded like a stick hitting taut cellophane. Not powerful at all. Pike's Enterprise phasers scratched that itch.
Good video, but... the 'early' phaser shots you use are from the Remastered series, where modern tech modernized both the shots and the sounds. The first time we got to see actual phaser BEAMS, they were red, pulsed slightly, and instead of the traditional whine we get today, it came out as a roaring ARRRR! ARRRRRH! Also remember that the weapon of choice in "Balance of Terror" were phasers set on proximity detonation, not photon torpedoes... mostly because the writers of these early episodes didn't know what a photon torpedo was yet. Unfortunately, the only way to find the red screaming phasers would be for someone to upload video from an old video tape of a pre-Remastered edition, like if someone were to have a copy of the Columbia House Video version which had this version. The issue is with the Remasters AND their 'Restored' non-edited variants, since the so-called non-editing is somewhat false, as my copies of these have cleaned up 'standard series' phasers and sound effects.
Yes, I am aware that the original phaser effects were different, but unfortunately, I do not have the pre-remastered version available. Thanks for watching.
Reminded of how the ships are a character themselves, I knew I wouldn't be liking the TNG films too much when as a first order of business they destroyed the Enterprise D.
I've always hated the phaser sound effects in The Wrath of Khan. The TNG-ENT sound effect is probably the best, offering a little more punch than the TOS sound but coming off less grating than the TWOK sound.
A shame there's no Discovery. I can understand some people's feelings towards if if you only consider season 1 and 2, but 3 and 4 took the show in the direction it should have gone from the start and made it Trek. It's still a bit melodramatic (which I kind of like to be honest) and does have some very silly odd choices at times in writing, but on the whole it feels like Star Trek. Especially season 4 with its resolution with the 10-C. It's particularly interesting to me given how much I remember when DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise all came out and people would constantly go "oh but that's not real Star Trek!" Hell, people even did that to TNG, and yet we accept them all today. But that is my opinion. This is a very well put together showcase, thank you.
Discovery is absolute garbage. Kurtzman thinks he's being clever trampling over what has come before. Including the effects for phasers torpedoes and warp effects. Unimpressed
Kelvin Timeline Starships are heavily armed even for a science and exploration ship like the Constitution Class Heavy Cruiser USS Enterprise NCC-1701. It has 6 Phaser Banks Top and Bottom (2 Phase Emitters Per Bank) for Offense, 6 Pulse Phaser Banks (Twin Pulse Emitters, 2 Per Bank) for Point Defense + 4 Torpedo Tubes ( 2 Proton, 2 Photon) a proper combat ship in a Militaristic Starfleet and Federation meanwhile the Prime Timeline has minimum weapons configuration a proper exploration vessel.

just trying to count how many Galaxy class ships in that 1 scene, it's amazing seeing all those big ships
that was stupid, we didn't even learn you was on board.
Defiant, best ship
I always thought it was weird how the ENT phase canons sound exactly like the TNG era ship phasers, and the same thing with the phase pistols and the TNG era phasers.
I have a video suggestion for your next upload. Photon & Quantum Torpedoes
Thanks for the suggestion.
The issue is you're using the remastered version of TOS here with the redone effects (that imo were redone chintzily)
You gotta hand Prodigy that : They knew how the phaserbank REALY works, especiel when you have energy to spare (wich in normal circumstances was never the case)
4:08 just noticing... WHAT THE HELL IS THE OBERTH DOING IN THAT BATTLE?!?!? Shure at 359 they used at least 2 Constitutions but still... an oberth? With Akira's Sabre's and Steamrunner around? Nope, that thing did say "frell the "keep your distance and let our warships do the job" warning". True Federation Captain at her helm!
2:59 fastest fire rate ive ever seen
I'm just wondering, but what in the world is the Voyager fighting against in 7:27? The James Webb Telescope?
That would be the station that broadcasted Tsunkatse.
@@JohnDiMarco Thanks for telling me. 👍
Excited!!!
The OG phaser shots for me, aka original vfx.
Even when SNW is a great show, I still miss classic phasers with continious beam and it's typical sound.
Sadly we never get a shot of DS9 being surrounded by either Klingons or Dominion Forces and firing its weapons in all directions (so showing the whole beast so to speak!) :)
I see you left off Discovery.... which is understandable, as your title is "Star Trek Ship Phasers"
And the JJ Star Trek movies! The scene where the Enterprise warps in to save Spock was pretty epic.
th-cam.com/video/FXy_DO6IZOA/w-d-xo.html
I like Discovery just fine, but their phasers in seasons 1 and 2 sounded like a stick hitting taut cellophane. Not powerful at all. Pike's Enterprise phasers scratched that itch.
All crap
How come TOS phasers look cooler than TNG VOY DS9 phasers?
3:00 Phasers! Rapid fire!
Out of all these, The Wrath of Khan still has the best phasers.
Phaser beams, especially when fired from phaser strips really are the best looking weapon in all of sci-fi.
Elegant, yet deadly.
And I like how there was no mention of Discovery anywhere 😂
Where were the DS9 scenes of the station tearing up the Klingons and Dominion fleets?
DS9 vs. the Klingons: 5:28
DS9 vs. the Dominion: 5:50
I remember being a kid and holding my finger to the TV pretending I had superpowers
Love the video
Thanks!
very comprehensive
I love this!
Thanks!
@@JohnDiMarco Playing it through the studio monitors... my wife hates you now on a massive personal level.
(Jk/ it's great man!)
@@DaveGSound Sorry, Mrs. DaveGSound.
Reminded of how the ships are a character themselves, I knew I wouldn't be liking the TNG films too much when as a first order of business they destroyed the Enterprise D.
You left out the best phaser scene in Voyager: battle with Numiri
That was a good one. Unfortunately, some scenes like that were not included for sake of time. Thanks for watching.
I've always hated the phaser sound effects in The Wrath of Khan. The TNG-ENT sound effect is probably the best, offering a little more punch than the TOS sound but coming off less grating than the TWOK sound.
The original series one isn't really accurate visually, since you're using the remastered animation for the Enterprise, planets, etc.
Thanks for watching.
Which ep is 2:37?
The Survivors.
The TWOK phasers blow everything else out of the water
DS 9 GAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW OFF THE FRANCHISE'S CGI CAPABILITIES.
I wonder why Discovery is missing from this list? Because they didn't have regular cool Star Trek phasers, they had Star Wars-like PEW PEW guns instead!
You didn’t do the Kelvin timeline
I prefer the photon torpedoes and the sound it makes !!!
@JohnDiMarco You should do one when they are firing Both Phasers and Torpedoes together. If you can great. If Not No worries.
Thanks for the suggestion.
If Yoda was a Borg. "Assimilated you will be! Yes you will see"
I didn't think anything could have been worse than lower decks💀💀💀💀💀💀
No red shirts were harmed during the filming of this scene 🖖
Best phasers and photons are in first contact no question
I just realized that the refit Enterprise only used phasers in Wrath of Khan. That seems like such a waste.
Space battles are no the strength of star Trek, but ship phasers are deadly
Can't believe you left out the battle against the Vuadwar from Voyager (in Dragon's Teeth), I think it's the best battle they ever did in that show. (th-cam.com/video/mwrCEgPcW6I/w-d-xo.html)
Now if they had only had phasers at the Alamo or Wake island.
I'm convinced that the blue phasers of the TOS era are of Andorian make, whereas the orange phasers of the TNG era are of human make.
I like that idea.
@@JohnDiMarco check out Axanar........they do say in "Prelude to Axanar" that the Andorians were happy to supply the phasers for the then brand new Ares-class ships during the 4 years war which is probably why TOS phasers were blue much of the time
