I was honoured to meet Mr Shatner at the Calgary Comic Expo. I lucked out in catching a moment of nobody in line and he certainly took advantage of not having to rush me away for the next person. I don’t think I asked him a single thing, he asked me question after question. Who I was, what did I do, what were my interests. It was a really beautiful moment where he seemed to really want to connect with me. I’ll never forget it.
I'm jealous! Several years ago, he came to Ottawa's Air and Space museum for some kind of Trek even (I forget the details). It was going to be a small-ish gathering that included a meal and a chance to meet him. I so desperately wanted to go but it was pretty expensive for me at the time and I just couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of money on myself when I could use it for my family. I don't regret putting my family first, obviously, but I will always regret that I couldn't go. I figure it was my last, best opportunity to meet him and I missed it.
I had a very similar thing happen years ago with both Mark Leanord (Sarek) at a convention and funny enough spent almost an hour with Stan Lee at a clothing trade show in Vegas. Really great to just spend time with them as individual humans. Never got a chance to meet Shatner but got to see him at a con in the audience.
Had a similar thing with Temuera Morrison a few weeks ago. (I met him before hand last year at a Comic-Con at the Gold Coast in Australia) He recognised me and had a good chat, he almost broke down when I said I had been battling cancer. Mr. Shatner, I’m 55 and have been a fan since I was a child. I was glued to the TV, every time the show was on, watching the heroics of Captain Kirk. I once angered my father when I was 7 by saying “Why can’t you be more like Captain Kirk” Your “Oh my” in Generations was perfect, so please don’t regret how the scene turned out. I understood exactly what you meant when I saw it in the theatre. Thank you for the inspiration you gave a young child to achieve things in life. Be well sir.
You know guys, a "director's cut" of Final Frontier with your VFX might be a spectacular match. Also this is the most switched on I think I've ever seen him.
Shatner agreeing to do Unification is fantastic - he doesn't need the money, he doesn't need the fame - he's got so much at his fingertips But - like all of us - he doesn't have time - he's 93 years old and I think he wants to go out with a legacy that, in cinema, as "decent" - just like his character, Cpt Kirk. This is essentially a eulogy... and he does it well. Congratulations, 'Captain My Captain'.
I remember him telling a story how he was living in his car in 1969 not long after Star Trek was off the air and listening to the broadcast of the moon landing on the radio. Life is so interesting how everything turns out. And our lives are better watching and listening to this man.

My father, 98, passed last week and he was my true hero. William Shatner's Kirk and James Doohan's Scotty were the heroes I watched as I grew up. I thank all three for my life's journey as an engineer, development engineer, business developer. Unification and this conversation cements in my mind how lucky I was to be influenced by all three. And thank you Dad most of all.
Thank you dear sir William Shatner for playing an iconic and amazing character of James Tiberius Kirk and bring him to life with your emotions and acting. I am currently 33 years old and will never forget in the year 2002 and when I was just little over 11 and half when I saw The Original Series. William Shatner, Star Trek/acting career aside, is such a clever and interesting man. Yes I’m a fan. The most significant moment in my life I remember as if it were yesterday, was sat on the floor with my friend eating spaghetti hoops on toast, glass of milk. The first time I ever watched Star Trek. I was about 4/5 I believe. My late Dad always used to say the Sci fi stories he read had so many lessons to be learned about the past and future that could, if we let them, help us in years to come. He gave me his love of reading and thinking about things that my peers didn’t even consider. Nothing else has ever had such an impact on me.
I could listen to this man talk for hours and hours. He seems so thoughtful and insightful, and his words about people ignoring history were spot on. A true legend.
I fell in love with Kirk back in 1974 when Star Trek replaced Bonanza in the afternoon right after school and before the news. Absolutely fell in love with Kirk as much as only a 12 year old girl can, and have been a Trekker since. Shatner has always been a favorite, I've followed him from show to show, movies, SNL - which I found funny, and now social media. He's a force of nature.
Thank you, Bill. It was GREAT just hearing YOU reflect without being obligated to entertain anyone. Perhaps Leonard isolated himself as his end approached so that your lingering memories of him would be those from better and stronger days(?) If so, then he was sparing you from seeing him declined and still declining further. God bless-Don
I am so thankful Captain Kirk is still with us. I dread the day when William Shatner departs this world. I will be 60 in six months time and your performance has had an enormous impact (positive) on who I am. Thank you Bill!
I am obviously feeling emotional in my own elder years because parts of this resonated deeply with my lifes experience of how our perspectives change and parts had me with tears in my eyes in memory of friends lost and regret for things not done.
The Unification video brought me to my knees...sobbing in great big heaps and gasps. Jeezus, that was powerful. Thank you for this tribute to you and Leonard's legacy.
William Shatner is a World Icon and Treasure! I don't care about his view on life, politics, etc., the man is entitled to whatever he believes and whatever he wants to say, so I have tremendous respect for that, whether I agree or not. All I do know is he deserves the world's thanks and appreciation for his entertainment he has given all of us, and to me Star Trek is his greatest and most important role, though he could and should be proud of many other roles he has done, and I for one will always love the man for his portrayal as Captain and Admiral Kirk! Because science-fiction is not taken seriously by awards like the Academy Awards, etc., which is ludicrous to me, but anyway he deserves multiple Academy Awards and most other acting awards, just look at his range and talents in so many different roles! The man is incredibly talented and I owe him a huge amount of gratitude, to me he is among the top five actors and to be honest people of this generation (my 1965 year of birth until now) and I am selfish to say I would give anything to have him reprise his role as Captain Kirk in Star Trek, but the way Hollywood works it is all about profit, money, and PC ideals, so it will not happen. Does not matter however in the big picture, he is a legend and I feel truly among the luckiest persons on the face of this earth to have lived and have been able to enjoy him, both on and off screen, and I would not trade that enjoyment for any money in the world! God bless you Mr. Shatner, and please know that even though I see people be critical of you for petty reasons, you have so positively impacted millions of peoples lives, including and selfishly most importantly to me, MY LIFE! Thank you Sir, we all love you and Godspeed to you!
It’s amazing to see behind the man and the legend. At 93 he gets what the meaning of life is and from a very unique perspective. Fascinating to watch, I could listen to him for hours I think . ❤
I noticed that when Bill was talking about Leonard, the slightly more moisture in his eyes. In mine too. Thank you for what you've done. Also, T.J. Hooker. Twilight Zone movie. Boston Legal. Ellery Queen. The books. That's all I remember for now.
I'm glad someone had the guts to say what they really think about new trek... more integrity at 93 than most people.... I'm sick of hearing cast members calling Alex Kurtzman a genius or saying things like all Trek is Good Trek.....
I have not cried for a movie in 20 years. this was so beautiful. thank your Gene, And all those who brought me hope, memories, dreams and goals and hopefully the peace i desire. Shattner is such a treasure.
Thank you OTOY for making these Star Trek shorts they are totally amazing you have made many many people happy, I wish everyone to Live long and Prosper ❤❤
Hands down this is the best thing I have ever seen. He answered every question I was wondering about for a long long time. Shatner has been my literal hero since 1970 when I was five years old. This was so fantastically well done, and that end piece, wow. Doesn't get better than this. Remember, if we go to war soon, that we are all brothers in science fiction. Thank you.
This was wonderful. Thank you William Shatner for being Captain James Tiberius Kirk. There were times in my life when I needed to be stronger than I was capable at those times. The life you brought to this character guided me towards inner strength and inner peace. And for that I am eternally grateful.♥ Thank you to Star Trek for the wisdom to seek something better within me♥
I love this man. I don't care what anyone says about how he was on set or his personal life. He was a big part of my childhood and at 50, I hope I live long enough to see mankind move out across the cosmos and even if I don't, I hope future generations go with hope instead of hate. That was always the message I got from Star Trek.
What people forget is that the show lived or died on shatner performance. He had 10 pages of dialogue a day. The other character, apart from Spock, were essentially background characters. If you look at the scripts George and Walter had a handful of lines per script, if they were lucky. Shatner was in almost every scene. He was never going to care much about background characters.
What an incredible way of thinking from someone incredible. He influenced the minds of all of us and future generations to come concerning space travel and influenced space exploration far into the future. He will always be a hero among Star Trek super fans! I'm proud that he chose a bride from my home state of Indiana!
RIP, Mr. Nimoy. Mr. Shatner (I am 62, but you are still of great respect - so Mr. it is) Thank you for all the years, sir. Thank you for Unification. Look forward to "more".
My role model growing up. Dad would secretly let me stay up late to watch StarTrek. he felt it important for me. Mom would get mad lol. I know things happen, things are said but in the end you are the vision I have for what dreams may come. as i think back i remember imagining being the captain of my own Enterprise, and sailing the stars. I admire you Mr. Shatner you have gone to the heavens and looked back, looked at our world and seen its place in existence. My one dream is to one day see our world with my own eyes. I know I'd cry.
You are and forever will be the greatest Admiral Kirk! Thank you for showing us the importance of friendship, leadership, courage and loyalty against all odds even in the face of defeat and death itself! Spock and Bones would be proud!
Star Trek V is AMAZING-its greatest strength is seeing the primary characters completely realized without breaking a sweat. If it’s been years, give it another watch. It holds up with the classic Star Trek and is VERY underrated. It’s not perfect-but nothing is. That’s what makes us… human.
I wanted to fly up to Ticonderoga to meet with you last week but my daughter had a baby so I went to Dallas to hold her. You’re right, life comes pretty fast. I really hope that I get the opportunity to meet you again. You’ve inspired, made me laugh and left me astounded. Thanks Mr. Shatner!
The term legendary and icon are so over used in today's society but William Shatner certainly deserves both titles. When I see the destruction of our planet on the news with the ill legal cutting down of the rain forest in Brazil and the heating up of the planet caused by India, Russia China who carry on regardlessly I'm always reminded that our politicians have failed us again and William Shatners observations in this report are so brutally honest.
I was fortunate to have two great Dads. My actual Dad, an extreemly intelligent, gifted man with many human faults and my T.V. Dad, a nearly perfect Dad with a few flaws but who worked hard at being the best Dad possible, Capt. James T. Kirk. Bill Shatner has become as close to being Kirk as possible. He's 93 and still getting better all the time. Love you T.V. Dad, stay with us as long as you can.
Mr Shatner is a genetic wonder to me... i mean, for gods sake, the man is 93 and his voice is steady, he looks like a 60 years old man, he's so vibrant and sharp. How I wish I could grow old with a fraction of his vivacity and health. I wish he was immortal.
Thumbs up! It brought me to tears to my eyes due to the truth of his words and the reality of where we should be heading. What a wonderful interview, I have and always loved Star Trek the Enterprise and her crews. William Shatner is insightful and with a meaningful heartfelt love for our future and the Earth.
What a gift to the world Star Trek was. And to have been there at the start back in the 60s and watch society change and evolve because of its influence and still be around all this time later to comment on it. It boggles the mind to think of a life like Shatner has had. I'm only 32 so I have no idea yet. Hopefully his worries of the future don't come true. ❤
6:55 This is why we love this man. Just honestly about what we all know about present day Star Trek. Thank you for being so inspiring throughout my life.
For everything all of you have given us, and now for 765874: Unification: Thank you Gene, thank you Bill, thank you Leonard, thank you Jackson, and thank you everyone who made Star Trek so wonderous. Finally a fitting goodbye to beloved friends. Rest in Peace now Star Trek, you deserved it.
I was 7 when Star Trek aired. I was hooked. Loved it from the first time I saw it. Love hearing from you and your reflections and memories. Proud to be a fellow Canadian
Going through life, the ups and the downs star trek has always been there for me. Captain Kirk is my Captain, and always will be, ever since my dad took me to see wraith of Khan in theaters. So when I seen the new unification I cried like when I was a kid, and I'm a firefighter in my 40's lol. Thank you William shatner.
That was a good interview! You got the Shat to say a number of things that I hadn't heard him say before. It was a good interview. The editing implies that the full interview was longer, and I would be totally up for watching the whole thing if you ever decide to post it. He's still so well-spoken even in his 90s!
Bill, my life would not be as good as it is without Star Trek and without Captain James T. Kirk. You and all the people involved gave us all HOPE for the future!!!
having the characters and the heart of star trek in the hands of its fans and creators is just so heartwarming. studios backing these projects give me hope for the future.
Thank you very much, OTOY, for uploading this interesting interview with William Shatner so that I can see it again in the future. ™ Please have a nice day. ™
I am incredibly excited for this William Shatner is my hero, my sister followed him since the Canadian Theatre days, she showed me his work, I first saw him in something in 1958, Then Judgment in Nuremberg, 1961, From there I followed and collected every one of his T.V. and movie works he has done from then til now. Only missing Star Trek Phase II, The western where he was playing twin half Breed brothers, and Barabary Coast, and some of the Unexplained!!! GaryBailey 🍀🌹🍀❤🇺🇸🇨🇦🇬🇧🇦🇮💚🌩️⚡
You will always be recognizable sir. This was such a great video of a terrific actor and series. Can never get enough of Star Trek. Thanks for sharing this!!!!
that was quite a bit more touching that i expected. Thank you Mr. Shatner for what you've given us. From the 60s and even the 2020s. You are an inspiration.
Wonderful to listen to this great man, William will always have a place in many of our hearts including mine.
Intelligence, humility and humanity. This touches all the bases. Well done. I really enjoyed this interview with William Shatner.
William Shatner is a legendary actor who brought Gene Roddenberry's optimistic vision of the future to life. Thank you so much, mr. Shatner!
I am so thankful Captain Kirk is still with us. I dread the day when William Shatner departs this world. I will be 60 in six months time and your performance has had an enormous impact (positive) on who I am. Thank you Bill!
Me too
I am obviously feeling emotional in my own elder years because parts of this resonated deeply with my lifes experience of how our perspectives change and parts had me with tears in my eyes in memory of friends lost and regret for things not done.
This morning, "Unification". Now this? Wow, Christmas has come early! Thank you so much for today, my friends!
Thank you William, you have given us all a gift that we can treasure for ever.
The Unification video brought me to my knees...sobbing in great big heaps and gasps. Jeezus, that was powerful. Thank you for this tribute to you and Leonard's legacy.
For me it was the moment that "For Leonard Nimoy" came up on the screen. Dust in my eye... a whole heap of it.
He truly is amazing. To be that articulate and aware at his age is something... Really is something, we can only hope to get as close as possible.
Shame on Paramount for the past disrespect of this man and the charactor he played over the last few years. He is a true American and global icon.
Shatner is Canadian, mon ami. LLAP
How about that game show?
Forgot that.
@johnverkler3962 and he's probably glad you did.
I'm glad someone had the guts to say what they really think about new trek... more integrity at 93 than most people.... I'm sick of hearing cast members calling Alex Kurtzman a genius or saying things like all Trek is Good Trek.....
Great interview. William Shatner will always be a legend and Generations was an excellent movie.
I have not cried for a movie in 20 years. this was so beautiful.
thank your Gene, And all those who brought me hope, memories, dreams and goals and hopefully the peace i desire.
Shattner is such a treasure.
My Captain. Always.❤
God bless, Mr. Shatner. Dude is going on 94 years old and sharp as a tack.
A very moving and beautiful interview
Long over due. William was and forever will be the first captain to captive the audience and created a fanbase that will be around forever.
Look forward to "more".
he deserves to make it to 100
I’m four minutes in … utterly overwhelmed. What a fantastic interview, just keying him speak. I need to save this for later.
Fantastic upload.
William Shatner has such an incredible personality that it's easy to understand why so many people love Captain James T. Kirk.
What an incredible, insightful man. I can only hope I have the privilege of being so thoughtful, clear and present if I should reach my 90s.
I wanted to fly up to Ticonderoga to meet with you last week but my daughter had a baby so I went to Dallas to hold her. You’re right, life comes pretty fast. I really hope that I get the opportunity to meet you again. You’ve inspired, made me laugh and left me astounded. Thanks Mr. Shatner!
I could only hope to be as long lived as shatner, what a hero
He lives long and prospers
This is wonderful. Thoughtful, heartfelt and just radiating his own personal wisdom and philosophy, accrued over 93 years. He's in great shape.
A true Canadian treasure.🇨🇦 Thank you sir.
We all wish that Mr Shatner was immortal my dear friend. Best line in here that last one of yours
Thumbs up! It brought me to tears to my eyes due to the truth of his words and the reality of where we should be heading. What a wonderful interview, I have and always loved Star Trek the Enterprise and her crews. William Shatner is insightful and with a meaningful heartfelt love for our future and the Earth.
I find it so hard to believe he's 93. He looks amazing and is as eloquent as ever.
We can only hope that the adventure continues ----
What a gift to the world Star Trek was.
Thank you for making this and giving it to us. It means even more than you may ever know. 🖖
Thank-you for sharing your wisdom and life's experience Mr. Shatner.
For everything all of you have given us, and now for 765874: Unification:
Thank you Gene, thank you Bill, thank you Leonard, thank you Jackson, and thank you everyone who made Star Trek so wonderous.
Wonderful conversation with Mr Shatner - thank you.
It's incredible that he never lost the voice as he got older. Get him to voice Captain Kirk in videogames and animated films!
having the characters and the heart of star trek in the hands of its fans and creators is just so heartwarming. studios backing these projects give me hope for the future.
Thank you very much, OTOY, for uploading this interesting interview with William Shatner so that I can see it again in the future. ™
Please have a nice day.
Only missing Star Trek Phase II, The western where he was playing twin half
Breed brothers, and Barabary Coast, and some of the Unexplained!!! GaryBailey 🍀🌹🍀❤🇺🇸🇨🇦🇬🇧🇦🇮💚🌩️⚡
Phase Ii was never made but a script for that was retool as Star Trek The Motion Picture.
Did you see him on Gunsmoke? I think he was shot by James Arness!
Not only was he such a passionate actor, he is also passionate about life and the universe around us. So happy to have grown up watching him.
Published on the day of my father's birthday. Nov. 19. R.I.P, dad. Space is you.
You will always be recognizable sir. This was such a great video of a terrific actor and series. Can never get enough of Star Trek. Thanks for sharing this!!!!
I watched Shatner's trip into space and I could see when he came out of that capsule after landing that he'd had a very deep experience.
that was quite a bit more touching that i expected. Thank you Mr. Shatner for what you've given us. From the 60s and even the 2020s. You are an inspiration.
He was my hero when I was 4 when I first saw Star Trek in the UK . Im 58 now and he's still up there
Wonderful to listen to this great man, William will always have a place in many of our hearts including mine. When I was a child in the 1970's I used to dream of being beamed up and traveling the starts with the Enterprise crew. The fascination of science has stayed with me all my life and to listen to William talk is like listening to a farther, he will be seriously missed when he has gone.
I am so glad to see one of my heroes still going strong. The cast and crew of the USS Enterprise are my favorite people ever!
How bravely candid, honest and open...
