  • No matter how many books and podcasts I read/listened to, there were still some surprises! (not surprising, right?!) after all every dog is different. And YOU are different. So I hope this helps you in the journey of trial and error in finding out what works best with your new dog.

Hi Jenny! One other thing you should maybe add if you do an update like this is- it's VERY helpful to have a greyhound experienced vet. As you already know, they're oddball (meant in the most loving way possible of course :) ) dogs and have internal differences as well. Their spleens are larger than other dogs, kind of like race horses, which is helpful to know when diagnosing internal issues. They are also incredibly sensitive to anesthesia unlike other dogs, their bodies metabolize it differently due to their genetics and what they've been bred to do. Just a couple things I've picked up over the years of adopting and fostering retired racers. :) Congratulations on Daphne, she's a sweetie!

I’m certainly with you on the bed issue. My experience of having a greyhound sleeping on the bed - or any dog, come to that - is that try to increase their space, to the detriment of your space. You end up on the edge of the bed, clinging on for dear life. It’s no way to get any rest.

    • @TheOtherJennyLee
      @TheOtherJennyLee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

THANK YOU!!! Yes, and then your sleep quality decreases too as they randomly decide to groom themselves or shift around :) and they're big dogs! they will take up lots of space!

My greyhound usually just curls up into a nice, space efficient ball of bliss so I don't have any issues sleeping with her, in fact I find it weird whenever she decides to sleep anywhere else in the house!

@@profgyland2 the answer is not to not get a greyhound but to ensure that the greyhound has his/her own bed and you have yours and that they aren’t the same space. I hope this clarifies matters for you.

My greyhound isn't allowed on the bed, but we had a snowstorm recently. It got really cold and we lost power for a short time, so I let him sleep in the bed. It was good to know he was warm, but it sure wasn't easy to sleep with an 80 lb dog sprawled out on top of me. He's definitely a bed hog!

If she has a high prey drive, it would be safer to keep her on the leash and only let her off when there are no other dogs at the park (fully enclosed area only).

I totally understand. My 1,200 sq ft condo with a fairly large yard is more than enough room for my “kids”. I live right outside of New Orleans and am retired. The cost of living is substantially different. Being retired affords me time to spend with them.
I find that putting them on a regimented routine is best. We walk everyday, breakfast is at 10:00am, dinner at 4:00pm. On Saturdays they run in a friend’s large yard. My male Red had irritable bowl syndrome a few days ago which required a 2 day stay in the doggy hospital which cost $2,000. I can’t imagine cost in NY. Enjoy your baby.

I have 2 greyhounds. I adopted 1 then a few months later I adopted another. I’m so glad I did. They get along perfectly. 0 separation anxiety because of the bond they’ve developed. For heart worm treatment, I use Ivermectin. It’s very inexpensive and works perfectly on greyhounds. Google cc’s per pound body weight(simple math). I use a syringe to correctly measure then inject into food once a month. Very inexpensive and works great. If your hound experiences soft poop, try another quality dog food until you have better results. Remember, 2 Greyhounds are better than one.

It took me almost a year to break the separation anxiety with my American Staffordshire Terrier. 8 years later and he will still get a random hair up his ass and throw a fit when I’m not home. Crate training really helped with it. His crate became his safe space and he would often actively choose to nap in there during the day. Also exercising him relatively hard before crating up helped him sleep through large parts of the separation. And I’m right there with you with not letting the dog sleep in bed. I hate it cus he’s not a good co-sleeper but my fiancé really enjoys him sleeping with us so we alternate days he sleeps with us. Flip side, my Rottweiler is very co-dependent on us but oddly enough she doesn’t have separation anxiety.

I just got a greyhound last weekend, the first dog I have owned and the first one for my husband and me. Afternoons are much easier for our dog, so far, but overnights and mornings are tricky. Our dog can basically sleep on his own in our room (in his crate), but he usually has to get out at least once during the night to pee. He is only two years old, and didn't have any racing history tied to him, so the belief is that he didn't actually ever race.

Love your channel and keep pumping out those videos. I don’t have a greyhound. I have another breed. Yes, the learning curve on that first dog is huge. However if you’ve done your research before you got the dog, it would’ve helped a lot. Some of your 10 points are greyhound specific and are interesting to me since some day I may want to adopt one myself. But other ones are very general and can be applied to other dogs. Anyway, my one observation/comment…my suggestion is to stay away from dog parks/runs. My first dog was attacked by another and it forever changed my dog’s personality. I’ve also heard so many stories from other dog owners about incidents at the dog park too. Remember this saying…you can have the most well behaved/trained dog but at the end of the day, you don’t know and can’t control other people’s dogs.

There is a product available in the farm and feed stores called Corona. It is an oily greasy thick goop that can be put on your dog's Paws and then they can wear boots for an outing now and then just so they get that conditioning treatment. It is antibacterial and skin conditioning good for a host of things. There is also something called nfz Puffer that can be puffed into their ears to rid off ear infections and earbugs and such ( it's a very fine powder it may also have antifungal Properties or medication in it as well because I used it on a dog's yeasty ear.

And oh boy, the medical bills... we don't have many shots that are compulsory, but my rescue was just sick EVERY MONTH. Most of the shelter dogs, even puppies have a bad stomach, because they never had proper nutrition growing up, therefore they are super sensitive for stomach and other diseases.

Excellent comment about the ACL issue. Have not heard that one talked about in other videos I have seen so far. Also the drug resistant whipworm issue. That is another I have not heard of. Well done. I also agree with you about the bed issue. There is an old saying, 'start off as you mean to go on'. What happens if you are a single person who then gains a human partner. He/She vs dog. No one wins that battle. Better to have the dog be used to their own bed.

@@l.e.6263 It is important to have good sanitation practices. My neighbor has a large puppy/dog, and they do not pick up the dog waste. They must not realize that that dog is walking though that poop, and bringing it to their house. Also, that their little daughter is possibly walking through it also. They will probably be getting a visit from the city if I have to smell that stuff out there this summer. Both roundworms and whipworms can be picked up by people and cause issues. The term 'creeping crud' is the common name of visceral larva migrans - which children being infected with worm larva and it burrowing under the skin. Pick up the poop, people!

@@be6715 Agreed but Many do not pick up poo; also cannot pick up runny diarrhea. Even IF pick up poo must sanitize spot with ammonia immediately to kill resistant hookworms, parasite microbes & who does THAT in dog park? Concrete can be sanitized but lawn will die. I know good dog owners whose pooches were infected by using dog parks, as many owners do NOT quarantine sick dog @ home, & train dog to poo in park/another’s yard instead of own yard. Internal parasites vet bills in most big cities costs thousands .I replaced my lawn for my grey after she was free from all parasites, walked her in trails, not dog parks. Greys get chased by big dogs too.

I just wanted to add that it is very important that oregano oil is diluted before use as it is very strong (like original poster said). It can cause chemical burns if used undiluted. Some oregano oils are pre-diluted so just make sure to check the ingredients. It is a great thing to have around though for both doggies and people.

Ur right greyhounds love company but never get a second dog to fix your dogs separation anxiety bc first of all bc u have to care for that second dog as well as u do for ur first dog and that takes up double the time and effort. Second of all theres like a 50/50 chance that it helps with separation anxiety. It can also happen that they hype each other up and then bark and whine together and it makes it even harder to cure that separation anxiety

Ex racers are used to being around greys- it was their only comfort. But if u cannot afford another dog- DO NOT get one. Separation anxiety can be trained out via modern toys, dog sitters, dog day care ( NYC has few great ones), your time providing interaction & training. More u put in, greater reward by learning your rules. She just came from hell, u gave her time she needed to come out of PTS. Give her time to learn your world. She looks comfy on your sofa, like she belongs there.👍

Focusing on the "good" people doesn't help expose the bad ones - and it is the dogs who suffer because of it. The term "retired" sounds nice but "rescued" is far closer to the truth ... either way, these gentle, loving dogs are all survivors of the racing industry.

Daphne is beautiful. I have a rescue grey from Florida, and I got really lucky with her. The Greyhound agency that I got her from had all of her racing records, immunization records, and she was on a very good medication regimen for worms. She does have a Achilles tendon injury, and her toes are a little messed up on that one foot as well. But besides that she’s completely healthy. I got super lucky because she is literally the sweetest dog ever, I got her separation anxiety under control within the first week. And she is now being off leash trained and is doing fantastic. Like you said every dog is completely different, also she doesn’t like to sleep in bed with me and she likes to be alone so completely different than Daphne LOL.

She just finished her last dose of that, and now we have a vet visit scheduled for next week because she’ll have to be on advantage multi for the rest of her life for worms. My first tip would have been, don't let your dog on your furniture. Apart from ruining the furniture it will effect how your dog sees you in the pecking order. We were lucky, my greyhound could be left 4 hours from day one. We were also lucky that my dog has always been happy sleeping on her own, but I would agree a dog should never share your bed. Poor owners think a dog shares the same logic as we do, THEY DON'T.

Very good question Matt - I just pick a vet that is within a 20min walk. If I must travel w her it’s with an Uber/Lyft and I call ahead to ask if it’s ok with the driver to have a dog. Surprisingly I’ve never been rejected! I tip extra. This is one of the inconveniences of having a large dog in the city. There’s also a pet ambulance service called Ambuvet but I’ve never and hopefully never have to call it

Resistant hookworm is in all USA & Mexico (Caliente track) racing greys due to lack of vet care, breeding sick dogs for YRS in horrid conditions. Some Show grey dogs have it too likely from cross breeding. Same Hookworms spread to Schnauzers per AKC, cause unknown. NO CUREI !! Known Treatment is long & tough for grey to endure & often fails. It’s very serious cuz worms affect ppl & all your yards; while grey suffers from dandruff skin, brittle hair, GI tract problems, lethargy, vomiting, etc, lots of testing & bills. Charities do not want public to know these serious medical issues caused by racing industry.
Massages & swim therapy aids the joints & ligaments. Greys paws have same bone structure of human hand- complex & prone to injury. Paw Skin can be thickened w/ products - ask vet. Short walk in smooth concrete helps. Nails must be clipped short. Once u have a regiment, it’ll get easier. At least u take your grey to the vet- many do not & let the grey die slowly. You’ll be rewarded for all u do for her by her unending love, & truly heartbroken when she passes.

Oh and I don’t crate her Bc she HATED her crate and drastically reduced whining after I let her roam freely in the apartment. Note that my apartment is 640Sf (NYC life).
