    I have a Romanian rescue also. We have shared our lives for 4 years now. For the first few days I didn't even look him in any the eye it was completely up to him what he wanted to do.

    He is so wonderful, thank you for adopting him and giving him the life he deserves! As a Romanian, l am so touched and happy when l see people adopting abroad. Here we sadly have way too many strays and authorities do absolutely nothing to stop this issue. My parents have a shelter also (about 200 dogs) and all the dogs are adopted in Netherlands, Germany... very few here. May you have many happy years together and hope your video inspires others to adopt as it is literally saving their lives. All of them deserve to know what a loving home feels like!

My dogs come from Andrea Berar in Alba Iulia via Christina Larsson in the south of Sweden, who runs her own placement service. She may have enough to do already with her contacts dogs, though.

    I volunteered in romania in 2019 and had to leave early due to the animal abuse I witnessed. I managed to get one over from there tho that I met on my trip. I named him smiley, cost me about £1500. But it was all worth it as he is now safe in Scotland with his forever home. (He is not with me as I have 2 rescues already)

    So happy you adopted! Shelters have many wonderfully stray dogs waiting for their forever families. I know because I found one myself today. He's still a pup but is the cutest little bundle of silliness. He gets into everything and I'll have to puppy proof my home a little for him.

    It's nice a dog is getting a good home wherever he is from. He is such a sweet dog. Only thing I didn't like was near the end when you were sitting on the couch you called him and he went to put his paw up for some affection and you sternly told him no. He was only reacring to your call and wanting some affection. Bless him. I got my rescue dog when she was 5 and I was only to happy to cuddle her whether it was on the couch or the floor. Whichever she was happy with. But saying that you've done a good thing giving him a home.

      If you have seen any of our other vlogs then you would know that he has his place on the sofa now and is given so much love and cuddles. All the advice when you first get a rescue, especially without knowing any of his background is to not let them on sofas or bed etc due to guarding issues they may have. Remember this is just a glimpse of his first few days. Please do not judge on a few minutes of a TH-cam video. We had moment with him where he would put a paw up, then his full body and then refuse to back down - which when you don’t know their background can be very intimidating. Therefore this was not something we wanted to encourage, Because we were quite strict to begin with it means now he is so much better with boundaries and instruction, and gets to enjoy all the love we can give. Now we know him so much better too we can tell when it’s just a paw for more tickles or wanted treats or it’s something else. Plus he knows us better too x

      Thank you for your message.
      This was his first day with us and previously he had been doing this and then putting both paws up n the sofa and when stood tall he felt quite over powering for a dog we had no idea about .
      They warn you not to let them do this, as you have no idea about their guarding behaviours and to set boundaries early.
      Now we have these boundaries in place and we know that he ‘ paws ‘ at us all the time for affection, he’s allowed on the sofa and bed for cuddles etc.
      Without these early controls and making sure we knew Max’s behaviours first we may not have the dog we have today. Every step in the rehabilitation is crucial. For those that don’t do this sometimes the dog can become very guarded of areas like sofas and beds, and become very disobedient.
      If you saw him now sprawled over my legs on the sofa... he’s a big softy (with us at least , still nervous of new people) x

      He’s still not a snuggler now he just likes to give you his paw. As we had only had a few hours with him by this point we didn’t know this or what his behaviours were. As you’re told not to let them onto sofas / beds in the first instance due to guarding issues (which are hard to undo) we needed to make sure he knew his boundaries. Although it did get very tough we have made so much progress with him in the last few months, as you will see in other vlogs - every hard moment was worth it. We still have a way to go with his seperation anxiety and he's still nervous in certain situations but you can't expect too much from them and he has come so far. It really is about giving them time... I hated every-time someone said that to us ' he just needs time' or ' give it time ' but they really do.
      Part 3 ( which is day 2-4 ) is coming soon...I honestly got to the point where we didn't think we could keep him or cope but looking back I am so glad we pushed through and kept going.

      We gave up as he didn’t see it as his safe place. He just ended up using a comfy bed on the floor and has now been promoted to the bedroom on weekends but still sleeps downstairs absolutely fine during the week.
      It took a few weeks to get him outside but once he was out he has only had one accident inside since then and I think that was more our fault for not letting him out when he needed rather than him just peeing indoors. We are unsure why but he just took to knowing he should go outdoors straight away, despite going indoors for weeks. As you can imagine we were so pleased xx

      He arrived with a very tight harness on. That he had obviously been in whilst in Romania. It was way too small for him.
      I didn’t record every moment unfortunately. We were only using my phone to capture what we could.
      We just kept feeding him treats through the collar and eventually he would let me pop it on and take off the old harness.

      We have actually had Max a year today and he’s over come so much, it’s taken a lot of hard work. If you watch our most recently video he’s just been on his first camping trip.
      It took us over a month to get him outside on a lead and then that was just walking to the end of the road with out him getting too overwhelmed by all the new noises and things, so I think we were a long way off a long walk back then. But he loves them now. Thank you for your comment. Xx

    So, let's get this straight, he came from Romania in a van directly and didn't go through mandatory UK 6 months animal quarantine?

    • @adventureswiththepolleys

      I think you’ll find that changed in 2011. He has a Pet Passport and all necessary vaccinations confirmed in his travel documents. They have to wait 21 days from certain vacations until they can travel to the UK.

    There are a lot of dogs in the uk too who need a good home so why is there this need to bring yet more in from other countries? Many of the major rescues such as Battersea Dog's home, Blue Cross and the RSPCA put thousands of dogs a year to sleep.

    • @adventureswiththepolleys
      @adventureswiththepolleys  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello, yes this is a question we have been asked before. We certainly tried the UK charities first but unfortunately it isn't always that simple.
      Below is a link to a good article to explain why...
      wunderdogmagazine.com/news/my-response-to-the-guardians-article-they-look-cute-but-should-we-rescue-romanias-street-dogs/
      Everyone can be in a different situation and have their own reasons for their choices.
      A report from 2018 shows an estimated total of around 1500 dogs were put to sleep, with 25 of those being because there was no rescue to take them in or anyone to look after them.
      Unfortunately most are put to sleep due to behavioural issues or ill health.
      It is very sad.
      Thanks for your comment, Chloe x

    I don't understand . Dogs need homes in Britain too. Why don't you adopt in Britain and donate the travel costs to Romanian rescues. This would save 2 dogs .

      Hello,
      Yes this is a question we have been asked before. We certainly tried, at the time, and contacted UK charities first but unfortunately it isn't always that simple.

      Everyone can be in a different situation and have their own reasons for their choices. These videos only show a glimpse of our situation and I would never judge anyone based on a TH-cam video.
      We do also support many animal charities, not just with dogs, in the UK and abroad too.

    • @adventureswiththepolleys
      @adventureswiththepolleys  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for your comment. We adopted Max back in June while others chose to buy lockdown puppies. It may have been a different situation if we were looking at UK charities to adopt now, but as previously posted on other comments we did try UK charities and unfortunately it’s not always that simple and we made the decision on our own circumstances. We also continue to support lots of UK based charities and others abroad. We would have not made our decision on where to adopt from because of the cheaper cost either. Please do not judge us or others from watching one or a few You Tube videos. Chloe x

    I don’t get it…. U order a dog then seem so afraid of him and won’t let him on couch!!! Oh joy 🥲

    • @adventureswiththepolleys
      @adventureswiththepolleys  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We did not ‘order’ a dog we adopted one. If you read other comments that are similar to this then you would understand the reasoning behind not letting him on the sofa initially.
      When you receive a dog , where you know none of it it’s previous history or behaviour, you have no idea how it will react or whether it will guard areas (like beds, sofas etc) and become protective over its space. When we first got Max he would put his front feet on the sofa and raise up to our faces and you couldn’t push him back don’t without him resisting, when you don’t know the dog this can be quite intimidating.
      If you’ve seen more recent videos, you would know that he now is regularly on sofas and bed , and even has his own chair!
      Rescuing a dog , let alone a Romanian rescue is a long journey and no step should be rushed into.
      Please do not judge anyone before you have all the facts. It can be very upsetting to those that are actually trying to do good in this very cruel world. We are by no means perfect but who is?
      Thank you for your comment.

      I have adopted also a small dog from romania. I have a golden retriever also. My golden is allowed on the couch. My rescue not. She hasnt earned that privilige yet. You have to set some boundaries in the beginning. Its not mean but better for the dog.

      I clearly was not laughing at him to be mean, being mean to him is not really the point of this video. I am not sure I would even call it laughing, , a sympathetic chuckle at worst, as it made me jump a little too and I do say 'awe, bless him '. We clearly care a lot about Max and to pick this one thing from this video, really? I'm sorry you felt that I were 'laughing at him'.
