One more tip is to use a shorter stitch on these so that they don't unravel once you cut them. I do something similar when I am using up scraps.

When I woke this morning to your new tutorial I actually cried. Once asked what motivated me to quilt..it was this quilt
Yesterday I started a scrappy four square quilt from all my leftover bindings and scraps. A longer proces then using all 2,5" strips but inspired by
sa loving memory of cuddling under a 4 square quilt with my great grandmother every night we were together. After 65 years still my warmest memories. Thank you for today's tutorial. It brought back so many memories .. all symbolized by this quilt

Hi Jenny - question for you. you started this tutorial saying that you make these quilts because you dont like waste, but then you used brand new strips to make it. Do you have a tutorial for the best way to make this with actual scraps?

Can i ask, if I don't use batiks, then usually a jelly roll has some white or tone on tone strips apart from the colour prints, which I don't think would contrast enough against the white strips. What would you do then, not use the tone on tone ones, make a smaller quilt or do you then need to buy two of the print jelly rolls? I too love this pattern, sometimes the simple ones are the best!

Once you have a bunch of 2.5" squares, sew them onto 2.5" wide strips of background. When you have a bunch of strips with squares, cut them into pairs. Then just sew a bunch together, and soon you'll have a bunch of big squares. This would be great way of "warming up" before you start sewing your projects.

It was a really helpful tip to put the skinnyist strip on top and center it and use that as your sewing guideline so that the squares will end up the same size and the seams will line up! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

These colors are great together. I like this one because it's simple, easy, and BIG. I make a lot of Project Linus donation quilts, however, and their requirements are more like 40" x 60" for the little kids. Would you consider showing us a simple, easy, and small quilt? Thanks for all you do. You make the world a happier place.

    • @susanmei9980

20 strips wide by 30 squares long will get you to those dimensions without borders. Subtract a few rows and squares if you want to add borders. 2” finished squares make for easy math. 😃

Nice and simple: A Classic beauty! Thank you for this tutorial, Jenny & MSQC team. I find sewing WOF length strips sometimes rather unwieldy. Knowing each full jelly roll strip gives you 16 squares, half a strip will produce 8. I think I’ll cut my strips at the fold and produce double the number of half-as-wide strip sets. It’ll give me more variety of fabric placement and be a bit easier for me to handle. (Also good for practicing seam-matching, excellent for beginners!).

I just put together the butterfly blocks from a long time ago MSQC tutorial and used beautiful island batiks in purples, blues, and pinks. Turning out so pretty. Batiks are becoming my favorite to work with. Thank you for all of these tutorials. 💙🤍🤎 If I could just work as quickly as you all do. 😉

The first quit Jennie showed at the beginning of her video was made using 2 1/2” scrap squares. She said she put it together with 4 patches. I would think that you need to start by cutting 2 1/2” background squares, and then make the 4 patches to put together to create the 16 count squares.

No, it's fun, as you're starting with two very big piles and are ending up with two little piles which lead to a great quilt top. Only the first two steps are annoying. But the method here is great, too, as I have lots of little fabric pieces that can be cut in stripes.

Ruth Schwartz I went to an estate sale several years ago and bought fabric and started pieces. There was a large box of individual 2 inch squares. The person had started sewing them together with no contrasting fabric in between the squares. I'm planning on taking these apart and make 4 square or nine square blocks. There are a lot of them. Also in this same box there were blocks for a grandma flower garden quilt. These were all hand sewn and very small and neat stitches All most afraid to start putting them together. I'll get up my nerve one of these days. Really like this video as it has inspired me to put these squares together now.

Very enjoyable tutorial and a beautiful and fun method. I inherited a huge box of over 1200 2" squares that had been cut and saved for a cathedral window quilt. I do not have the patience (or the expected lifespan!) to make that large of a cathedral window quilt, but I decided to make a postage stamp quilt (another name for this type of quilt). I did not use background squares in between, but just sewed all of my little squares together. I added some from my own fabric scraps and ended up with a nice bright scrappy quilt for the foot of the bed when you need a little extra cover. Very fun! (And my 2" squares were not all really 2", so the seams did not all meet - but that was fine with me, it is a little higglety-pigglety, but still very fun.)

Then I sewed a block with all the same colors together. Each block had 144 squares. I sewed alternate colored sashing on each square and it turned out fabulous! I gave it away to one of my kids. I wish I could send you a picture. I also love that you are showing this side of you as a person who uses it all up. I knew that side of you existed, but you were keeping it for your own use! I love this quilt! Years ago, a friend taught me that blue & brown go together beautifully. Your trip proves it!

Thanks for sharing this with us. This is close to a quilt my Grandmother made for me when I got married. I want to make replicas for each of my grandchildren in honor of Gram. This technique will make it so much easier. Also I appreciate every little hint to make sewing easier. Thanks Jenny!

Good Morning from Colorado Springs! Beautiful quilt.
I bought rulers and they have safety paper glue to the back! How I removed it? Firs time that I see brown tape I guess is for extreme weather conditions and delivery protection.
I love your tutorial! Please answer when you get the chance.
    Thank you so very much

You just have to get under a corner somehow (fingernails work) and peel it off. Yes that backing is annoying but it’s there to protect the ruler or template until it reaches its forever home.

Great 👍 thank you 😊 I suggest a short instructions on the back for example lick it until is off!! just a joke!
Remove it patiently with finger nails! I tried the finger nails hard to get it started it!
Thank very much for helping me and please pardon me for my sense of humor!

Wonderful tutorial, thank you. Im looking for a backing fabric and love the batik moon and stars used here. I looked on your website, but no luck. Can you help?
