Triple Play is a favorite tradition here at Missouri Star. Once a month, Jenny, Misty, and Natalie each demonstrate their own, unique spin on a favorite block, technique, or template. In this episode, the talented Doan ladies show off three fabulous new Dashing Star, or LeMoyne star, quilt patterns.
Natalie's Scattered Shoofly Stars is a modern masterpiece with big lemons stars and decorative shoofly sashing. Her fabric is Daisy Fields 10" Stackers by Beverly McCullough of Flamingo Toes for Riley Blake.
Misty's Star Dancer features stars in two sizes. She whips up scores of itty-bitty stars using the easy 16 method for making speedy half-square triangles. Her fabric is the Country Rose Layer Cake by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics.
Jenny’s Scrappy Dashing Stars dazzles with intricate piecing, but it's all made with quick and easy strip sets. Her fabric is the Buttercup and Slate Jelly Roll by Corey Yoder for Moda Fabrics.

In Jenny’s quilt, you could sew 4 jelly roll strips of similar colors together. You’d have 4 different patterns but the same “color”. It would be both scrappy but also show the lemon star more. I might play with that. I also want to say how great Natalie looks.
The whole conversation about "squaring" my brain substituted "swearing" and it still works for me! LOL I truly do not like to square my blocks, thus squaring and swearing can be used interchangeably! LOL

Beautiful quilts. I like how two different sizes gives almost a telescoping effect to the quilt. That shows up nicely in this tutorial.
You can streamline the assembly of 16 patches (4 x 4 grid of squares) by sewing it together in 5 seams. The key is to think in columns. Sew column 2 on top of column 1 using chain piecing. Then without breaking your thread, sew column 4 on top of column 3. You can put a small scrap of fabric in between if you need to. That’s one long seam of 16 squares sewn into 8 units.
Your second seam sews 34 on top of 12. Your third, fourth, and fifth seams are your “row” seams. Using chain piecing, you can even sew several blocks together at the same time.
If you have enough length between your first piece and your last piece, you can just continue with one long seam by sewing seam 2 on the first block immediately after sewing seam 1 on the last block. This can really speed up your piecing.
The key is carefully laying out your block before you begin sewing which was well illustrated. It’s fun to see the different designs.
If you sew along all 4 edges of a square to make HSTs, you generally end up with bias edges for the units. This is something to be aware of and a little extra care is needed to make sure those edges do not stretch while sewing. Sometimes bias is your friend, and sometimes bias is not.

What amazes me about the 3 of you is that I watch other quilters who sew and cannot sew a stitch without pinning everything before sewing. I watch the 3 of you in the triple plays and never see a pin and it seems like everything comes out quickly and perfect as far as I can see every time! I enjoy the triple plays and learn so much each time. There are different ways to get it done and I love that about you gals! ❤ thank you again for another wonderful tutorial!!!
