    The popping noise when you cut off the gas is it similar to a backfire in a car, this is preventable with something called a flashback arrestor. Essentially a piece of metal tubing with a reducer on either end down to the size of your gas lines. The tubing is packed with brass wool. Simply connect the flashback arrestor at the end of the gas line and the base of the torch, no more bang!

    • @HvV8446

      I personally like the loud pop, but i imagine it getting annoying rather quickly with a system like this

    • @dodgydingygames

      I think you're mistaken here, the noise isn't the gas burning in the lines, because it can't - one line is only oxygen and the other is only fuel so neither can support combustion themselves, likely the noise is a flashback in the torch body itself when the gas gets slow enough for the flame to burn back to the point the oxygen and propane mix. This is a result of torch design and flashback arrestors in the lines wouldn't do anything to help it (though they are still a good idea for safety in gas air got into a fuel line or something)

    • @Frie_Jemi
      @Frie_Jemi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@dodgydingygamesyou're possibly right, but I have had this problem before and fixed it with the flashback arrestor. I can't say if it would help in his situation for sure but as you said probably a good idea regardless.

      pretty sure that pressure wave can go back into the gun and ruin some of its internals and only happens when the oxygen is cut off before the fuel. Perhaps the new valve can be adjusted to shutoff gas flow in the correct order.

    My son, Wyatt, is 8 years old and is obsessed with Blacksmithing! He's been into tools, in general, since he was 3 years old. His dad and I both have been with Home Depot for 20+ years. He watches you every day before school, as his 'educational' selection. We truly back him in this interest and see a future. He has quite the set up in the garage...anvil, tool box, tongs, hammers, etc. He's wanting hot cuts now. Just know that your show is very kid appropriate while at the same time appealing to all ages! Thank you for being someone we can trust to teach, have fun and make things that appeal to even the youngest of Blacksmiths! :)

    To try to get rid of the popping noise, try turning the gas back a little. What it is is like an automobile backfire. It builds gas in the exhaust pipe then explodes. The torch is doing basically the same thing. It might be at the hang valve it may be at the tip but one of the settings on the gas side it a little high.

  • @nuuskye
    @nuuskye 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    For your flame saver, the bang is indicative of an imbalance in pressures, where the propane comes back into the torch while it is still trying to burn. Try adjusting the propane pressure up :)

    The reason fro the bang when you shut off de flame, is that your oxygen pressure falls to fast.
    It lies in the operating principle of the torch. It's an injector torch and that means, that the oxygen that has a higher pressuere than the propane or acetylene sucks the burning gas into the mixingpipe. But when you turn off the oxygen and burning gas, the oxygenpressure falls to fast and then the flame can burn back into the mixing pipe and with the right oxygen/burning gas mixing ratio in there, it exlplodes.
    At our factory we always turn the oxygen a little bit up before killing the torch.
    Im sorry for my bad english skills.
    But im just a sheet metal worker from Switzerland.

    I'm just curious and maybe it hast been asked/answered a thousand times - Is there any information on the montana workshop? Does it still exist/run? Who manages it? Alec said in this vid: Thats for another month - how long are you planning to stay in Britain? Questions upon questions :D Hope you're doing well! Cheers from Germany!

    Red spray on dykem??? Heresy! When I was in metals class in high school the teacher didn’t even call it blue dykem, he called it dykem blue.

    Try swapping the off brand rosebud for a victor nozzle. Bet that fixes everything for less than the cost of new torches.

    about the noise
    i think i remember from pneumatics that there is some sort "backdraft reducer"
    correct me if i'm wrong
    but the bang comes from one gas burning faster as the other
    with a reducer, that would solve the problem

    Install a flashback arrestor at the end of the lines to the torch, bang problem solved. The paper shim made me really nervous. I was bracing for the key to shift and destroy your lovely power hammer. Could you add a retaining plate at the back, to prevent any chance of the key sticking out that side? Similar to that retaining plate on the front, but it could probably just be fixed bolted/welded in place.

      Just think of what this young man has accomplished in that short amount of time. He is very successful, and I'm damn proud to see it all come full circle. Good for him and his team.

      Yes when he said that I thought it has only been 1 and a half years. Maybe he is wrong?? We could find the moving to Montana videos to see. I checked and they posted to TH-cam in 2018. That's 2 and a half years. Where has the time gone?????
