So happy to see the dies in action and I'm very glad you like them. This was a great collaboration, I learned a lot.
The damascus came out very good for your first attempt. I've never seen that pattern before. Can't wait to see more damascus making!

MM, I loved how your dies withstood all that work, looking just the same as when you shipped them off. Your skills, abilities, and talents shine always, and your willingness to collaborate adds greatly to these videos. Thank you.

I'm really glad you guys opted to upload around the same time so we get to see the process of making the dies, then immediately get to see them put to good use. Very satisfying. If you want more chitoyance, otherwise known as the shimmery effect of the layers of the steel showing through in the pattern, then you'll need many more layers of contrasting steel.

He could tape a piece of paper on the metal. Drill through the paper. Remove the paper and tape it on the other side in the same orientation so he knows where the Side One holes are and be sure to not drill there on Side Two.

the temperature of the steel when you forging is too LOW !!!!!
you need to be always around 1400°C (2552°f ) !
under this temperature you don't weld the steel !!!

Great work as always and the cooperation between yourself and My Mechanics is, as with all the fantastic cooperative projects that I see on TH-cam, an inspiration and a source of great pleasure to many, I suspect. The admirable assistance given so freely here should serve as a lesson to all. A pinch of help is more valuable than a truck load of sympathetic platitudes. Bravo, long may this tradition continue.

if you don't mind a little suggestion from the crowd, if you had not drawn the Damascus out so thin before you drilled the symmetrical holes would have not been such an issue plus the fact that you would have gotten more of a teardrop shape in the final pattern. I loved the fact that you used different size holes to make the raindrop pattern more unique. One thing I have always wondered why not drill the larger holes shallow and then go behind with a smaller bit in the same hole to expose more layering? All in all I loved the video and the fact that you let us see the learning process !

I have the same hammer as you (15kg anyang model) and mine came with flat dies. I actually gave them a very smooth rounded surface so as to be able to draw out steel easier. My experience was that the complete flat dies took a very long time (as you may have noticed) to move the material. Very fun to see you use the same machine, great video.

I have an idea for when you have time for another attempt at this pattern style. what about using hole drill bits to cause bigger ripples? similar to what you achieved with just the drill press but a little larger in ripple diameter. great work and cant wait for the blade that is forger from that patterned billet.

quick question... excuse my ignorance, I am a big fan of both channels... is there a technical reason why BBP couldn't make the dies produced by MM, as you do so many other things? I can only surmise that the die material is harder, therefore needing stronger cutters, more powerful miller, and higher temp oven; but I'm not sure. thanks.

    Hello BBP
You should put some borax to protect your steel from mill scales (but be carefull, it's a hot liquid that goes stick to you when hammering !)
Can't wait to see what you will do with this damascus !

  • @ioannissitaras2202
    @ioannissitaras2202 3 ปีที่แล้ว

A really cool video. Is there any chance the black spots you got may be avoided if you used borax between the stacked plates in order to remove any impurities. Maybe that could also help you out losing less material. I am not claiming I know any of forging just giving idea.

Can I give you another little tip???
Try not to cut the whole long block but rather shorter and then bend it around. This is how the Japanese do it and this technique is also clearly better in terms of impurities and the subsequent degree of hardness.

I think maybe some rounder dies or japanese knifemaker dies would be a better option for such a small hammer. Flat dies are nice for a lot of stuff, but they do not stretch material very well.
