I thought that also, but with the diameter change it would have to have a path for the cross slide to follow.

@alecsteele I'm an illustrator and what I'd recommend doing is starting by fluting the handle like you did with the rapier, that's the hard part out of the way, so now you dont have to confuse yourself with the complex shapes and whatnot. Once the handle's fluted it's probably gonna be a lot easier than you'd think to free hand the details.

Something that might help you with the layout of the scales would be finding some videos on how to draw a traditional japanese koi and/or dragon. You draw out the grid for the scales, then go back and round out the tips to make it look like real scales (overlapping half circles essentially). Makes the process so much easier to wrap your head around and it keeps the consistency of shape and size really quite uniform. Hope this helps.

after making narrow lines with a rotary air tool, you can lock it in a vise in a block of wood and use a triangular file or a ring file, or a file with blank sides to remove the stock material. You want to identify and remove volumes one at a time until you have the rough shapes. Start with the largest volumes and work down to the smallest. The final work is engraving chisels to so the under cuts and hard lines, and light shaping removal and brushing down to polish. The tool you show in your book looks 17th century, and seems inspired by cannon dolphins (lifting handles.)

The hardest part of doing historical recreations like this is the school of craft production which evolved over centuries that produced the original product that you simple are not privileged to. All that knowledge passed from master to apprentice is lost to some some extent. But that is also the fun of doing things like this because as you work, and inevitably fail, you begin to rediscover how the original craftsmen made the object. You begin to think as they probably thought, and basically time travel back into their minds and resurrect their skills and abilities! Nothing beats that experience!
