I'm having a plastic surgeon install a billet compressor wheel, 3 inch downpipe, and an external wastegate with a screamer pipe on my body. From now on i want to guys to call me Borg Warner and respect my right to boost over 30 pounds and make choo choo noises neadlessly. Some Saabs had an "Extra" button with no function, instead of just a plastic cover on the dash, it is meant to be used if you add something to the car (like foglights, or anything you want) so you save on having to find a switch and a place to put it!

That scramble setting was what my ex used to blow up both my b5 avants, when she learned how to adjust it :) Within a week of one another.. :)) Btw, 29psi is what a 1.8t will strip out a timing belt at. (: No I'm not still bitter about it that, it was only 8 intake valves, and belts, and 8 pistons, and 2 heads. Super fun. She called it the pass button

Next challenge proposal: Each buy identical cars and try to make them faster on a set budget. Preferably NA otherwise y'all just crank up the boost until something blows. Identical cars would probably be hard to find but its doable.
There is an over boost cut out under the dash on the Saab 900T, easy to find and bypass. Just follow the hose from the boost gauge down till it "T's" off towards the knee pad. If you are really making a lot of boost, the cut out can be dramatic, turning the engine into a 2L pre-charged compressor and throwing you into the shoulder harness. In doing so it can break the pinion bearing carrier housing, with a possible out come of you finding the gearbox in more than one gear at the same time, more drama. Been there and made all the mistakes and fixed them on the 900T.. Also, you may want to eliminate the stock bypass valve, a plastic Bosch thing. It doesn't like high boost and will likely just bypass when you don't want it to.

Got a Gforce 2 controlling the boost on my ST205 Gt-Four. Fantastic piece of kit. Also have a Saab 9-5 Aero as an daily so I am firmly in the Wasabi 9000 camp!
If when under boost it suddenly feels like you're hitting a brick wall its because of the fuel cut. With the Lucas ECU on the 900 it's possible to connect two wires together to stop this happening altogether. Just don't go crazy on the boost! The Lucas ECU is more restrictive than the Bosch system as the system automatically trims fuel based upon AFR feedback - whereas the Bosch system can be richened and leaned to suit along with AFR support. Could probably do with deleting the one way PCV vacuum hose - it produces an "air leak" and causes a rough idle. The side mount setup on the 900 is roughly 50% (or a little less) efficient and heatsoaks really quickly. There is not enough decent flow before or after to be effective. Changing to a front mount improved efficiency to around 90% and temperatures rarely exceed 30 degrees Celsius on long pulls. The best option for easy power on a classic 900 is to convert to T5.5 fuel and ignition from the later generation models. This uses a DI cassette to control the ignition and produces heaps more power off boost and has great knock control. Plenty of tutorials online and the best upgrade I did!

Was I the only one that go some sick in my mouth when he said bleed-valve or electronic boost control? the Saab has APC, one of the worlds best boost controls from that era, and it's modable easy. But fudging with the boost on a Saab without fiddling with the APC normally means fuel-cut and no teeth left...
24:15 Captain here: having turbo cars since 1917 I have the best fix for rubber intake parts repair. Sew them with fishing line and pliers and them seal the sewing with Goop glue. Properly done it will work with any kind of boost for years.
I guess the brush was used to clean the air vent as it is super clean for the year, good tip if you havent one of those goey blob things to clean your interior.
FYI, you can flash the Stock ECU on a Lancer. From what I've seen you might even be able to put a EVO ROM on it. Hell, the best ROMs for an Mistu ECU come from an Australian (Tephra v7 ftw).
Adjusting the boost cutoff or bypassing it is pretty simple, once you get the dash apart. Google "SAAB 900 APC Modification" and you should be able to find it. You'd also find how to modify the factory Turbo APC to produce upwards of 18psi of boost, and you could even have a sort of scramble mode plugged into it while still keeping the factory knock safety systems without having to spend considerable dollars. Oh well.
a 16v Turbo (B202) should run about 12psi on the stock APC box. 5 psi is wastegate pressure/base boost when the APC is inop. So "scramble boost" is just... stock boost
that ecu that was pulled out of the mirage was programmable, but i doubt there are definition files out there for it. that looks identical to the ECU i had in my 2g Eclipse 4g64 turbo that i built. basically flashed it like an Evo 8; ECUFlash and EVOScan
Am I the only one who thinks that running the haltech is totally cheating? The whole point of this is to be a budget build, it ruins it when you run a computer that costs more than your car. I would have loved to see a megasquirt setup, seeing as how that's something I could see myself doing in a budget build. Most people don't just happen to have a haltech elite just laying around.
metalpickle I don't think it's all product placement, but I'm sure the sponsorship is part of it. I'm sure they're getting these Haltech ECUs for either nothing or next to nothing, so I don't blame them for using them on almost all of their project cars. But because of that, we've never gotten to see them do something like megasquirt. I wouldn't choose megasquirt over haltech if cost wasn't a factor, but in the real world it is. Given that this is supposed to be a budget build, I feel like this would have been the perfect time to give megasquirt a try. It's a shame really...

But because of that, we've never gotten to see them do something like megasquirt. I wouldn't choose megasquirt over haltech if cost wasn't a factor, but in the real world it is. Given that this is supposed to be a budget build, I feel like this would have been the perfect time to give megasquirt a try. It's a shame really...
