2nd transmissions were used a lot in home built off road trucks, w/a shortened wheelbase used up here in Northern New England US of A for logging duties.
A lot of motorhomes use a overdrive unit Mounted behind the transmission and there's a company that builds them called "gear vendor" essentially, it gives you an overdrive gear for every foward gear so you would have 1st 1 overdrive 2nd 2nd overdrive And so on It gives you a lot of options including using a much higher Final gear ratio for accelerating and it gives you an additional overdrive gear on the high end so that you have better acceleration without robbing you of your top end. Gear vendor builds them for anything from tow rigs to drag racers and rock crawlers. Drag racers love to use the old school two speed power glides because they are bulletproof and putting a gear vinder behind them allows them to have two overdrive gears one for each gear.
@@Arhange1790 it's not really a customer car. It was actually built by (and for) the team over at the "Drift Garage 54" channel, which is one of the numerous Russian language channels under the Garage 54 umbrella that aren't being translated to English.
Its not that easy to drive since you need to learn the new gearbox style and two gear selectors. My issue is mostly running on certain gear most of the time. For offroad truck this makes sense as you are using whole range pretty much, but daily driver not so much. Still lovely little contraption and i wish some company made cheap couple gears and reverse boxes, but nope those are hella expensive what little is out there. Secondly this would never be road legal here. Just repair welding the subframe is automatic failure in yearly inspection. Seeing this, engineer would get brain aneurism and cause of this only place to use in is on the offroad side, maybe utility vehicle, but that also means it being diesel, witch there is very few around and completely out of price range of average joe.
One popular modification in the Volkswagen community is to take a Suzuki GSXR-1300 Hayabusa engine and mount it in a MK1 Golf [Rabbit in the US]. The engine fits perfectly, since it is approximately the same size as the Volkswagen EA827 engine the car came with, and it is easy to fabricate adapter plates. Since the early Golf was between 1800 and 2100 pounds, this 200 hp engine turns the little car into a raging screaming beast that runs with V8 Mustangs and Camaros.
Is this Garage 54?? This is a legit build. Incorporating a second transmission is nothing new but engineering it for this purpose is a stroke of genius. I would question matching up the gear ratios but it's probably fine in a Lada and makes the whole project especially interesting. That fabrication work is also no joke. You guys seriously stepped it up this time, there's real potential here . Please keep this project going.
@Garage54 thank y'all for doing this, my dad uncle and couple others THEORIZED about 39 years ago that will work, but to MANY mouth runners discouraged this and was dropped, thank y'all all for proving ANYTHING CAN BE DONE WITH BRAIN AND ELBOW GREASE
Plenty of Citroen 2CVs out there fitted with motorbike engines, the joy it must bring when audi tailgaters are left in the dust by a french duck must be immense, only ever seen them in videos, but the cars being so lightweight, they're pretty damned fast when the loud pedal is shoved... :P
I call this a 112% success, looking forward to seeing more of this project. Also show how the clutch is actuation is set up. Cheers from Montreal Canada.
Hell yeah. Keep this car progressing. Nice clean good sounding full length exhaust would be awesome. Try keeping the bike trans in a lower gear and shift the car trans. It would be a great comparison or project to find out what gear combinations work best for all around fun, drag ET, drift, autocross and daily. Aloha from Maui, Hawaii.
Now you're going to have to see what it's like on the track how fast does it actually go and how quick does it have between the start and stops compared to the original setup
Very well done project! By taking out a lot of front weight and having a clutch-less transmission I think you this is a good start for a Lada rally car build. Please do more videos with this car!
You *will* need a dry sump system. The Oil will vet skoshed to the side because the engine is no longer leaning whilst taking a turn. This will probably cause oil starvation if not taken care of.
If you can somehow get hold of it in Russia, perhaps you might want to swap a GR Yaris motor into the Lada. It's 1.5 liter and produces over 250 HP. Alternatively, perhaps a Fiat 595 Abarth engine might be a better fit...and probably more appropriate, since the Lada is just a Fiat 124.
Wonderful "on the fly" engineering! My only experience with a Lada's is dash cam videos of them crashing... Thanx for teaching me that they can be a little bit sports car-ish also. Glad to see you cleaned up the brakes... That should always be #1. Thanx for sharing and I've subscribed so I'll keep watching! Have fun! ✌️😎👍
i have to say out of all the videos this was really my favorite one great jobs guys that was awesome the gear box combo was the icing on the cake for me i know that combo would be great for the weather conditions you guys receive to awesome!
Now put the lada motor into a super bike.
😂
Yesss, this! 😂
Don’t tempt them! 😂
just the drop the 'super' from superbike
😂😂😂😂😂
Using parts of a second trans to add reverse and an odd low range is actually pretty genius.
i hope they seal up the open front of the bell so it doesn't get damaged

**6 reveres gears
yeah i was gonna say thats quite an outcome
This is unironically the best engine swap I've ever seen!
Exactly, and with two gearboxes its all terrain Lada 😄
Sound of changing gears, almost like in WRC 😉
Lol?
@@joe125ful yes?
Try to put the engine in trunk So can be mid engine layout ❤

This was one of the first projects you've done that doesn't feel like a throwaway project. This has real potential.
It is a customer car, so thats why they build it with very good quality.
"Very good quality" hahahaha
Yeah and painting the whole engine bay was a nice touch.
@@veightrwd8828 yes, but for the video it would have been better in white to better see what was going on.

We need to see this vehicle again in summer time for a speed and acceleration test! 🔥
I thought same thing! Put a roll cage in it for safety and go to that airstrip they use. It could get really interesting and FUN
They need to rest it on a ice track it will be quite the fun!
The mind boggles how well you've done this, it looks incredibly easy to drive considering the amount of engineering involved.
Cool story bro

🟦…I agree, he needs to find the lowest gear that it needs to drive the proper range of that secondary transmission and just Leave it there!
Thank you guys so much for bringing the Fast and Furious gearbox to reality!
The creativity of this channel is off the charts :)
Oh damn! That’s a keeper project Lada. Very cool indeed. I'd love to see how it performs on the dry track once the snow is gone.
well, obviously not like an ordinary car
This car is for winter drift
I'm 3 minutes into the video and I see you FINALLY found a decent welder.
Yea the other guys were ok and got the job done; but this new dude they got is a beast.
I and here I am thinking garage 54 is all about sketchy up experiments. I keep forgetting these guys can actually build good when they wanted to.

Hell yeah! That is a badass swap!
I love what you did with the second gearbox for fine tuning ratios.
Top speed eleventy billion kph!
That car is absolutely off the hook. I look forward to seeing more, there’s room for a turbo under the lid now, a disco potato would be mad as.

Do it!!!!
