yessss! I and my family couldn't wait to get there. We always stayed at the Oasis for 2 weeks every summer. Everything you've said is so true. South of the Border was amazing
Having lived "South of Tijuana" for years, and being a Retro enthusiast, we LOVE "South of the Border" ! My parents retired in Mexico and Dad was born and raised in Asheville, so this is PERFECT
i used to go with my family when we drove from maine to disney. it was one of my favorite parts of the trip. i loved the signs and getting to sit on the jackalope!
We used to stop at one on the way to our Grandma's in South Carolina. It must have been like a smaller side store though, it wasn't as big as this one. It was more just a small gift shop/firework stand. Still had the billboards though.
I’m typing this in south of the border and let me tell you this is one unique experience. The park here is incredibly run down and I love it! This place could use some refurbishing but I love this place regardless
My daughter and I live 45 minutes north from there. Every time we're going to Myrtle Beach we stop at SOB .😊😊Its dumpy but so much fun. We always buy a souvenir and have an ice cream cone
Hey! I didn't travel that way much as a kid, but I did go thru south of the border around 1980, again around 1987, and then as an adult in 2005, (I took a bunch of pics and vids), and again last year in 2022 (I stayed overnight for the first time and made videos which are on youtube). I am going on vacation in a few weeks, and plan to stay at South of the Border again. It is very shabby compared to how it looked in the 80s, but they still have the best tacos, the rooms are clean and inexpensive, and the reptile museum is COOL! They also have a talking parrot!
I missed out on this, numerous family trips from Long Island to Disney and never stop there. Dad was a teamster so driving for hours without stop was his thing and stopping there would take to long, lol. Wives family stopped once in the 90's and she says it was a disaster.
I Love stopping at South of the Border. I agree places like these, which are vanishing, made road trips bearable. My stops there were always as an adult, traveling North from Florida to visit family up North.
As someone who grew up in central Michigan in the 80’s and 90’s, I came down to central Florida no fewer than 5 times. But we always flew when we did. We had limited time and it always felt easier. But I-75 was our I-95 to come down. Point of fact, I’ve actually lived in Central Florida now for just over 25 years and my entire adulthood. But I can totally see this place being a fond memory. As a kid, even the most quirky places, or getting to stay in a roadside motel like a Red Roof Inn or a Knights Inn was a cool “experience” for me. And honestly, where I lived it was nearly 100% Caucasian people. So places that were “Mexican” or any other culture, even if tacky, stereotypical, or Americanized, was really interesting and cool to me.
As a kid in the early 2000s our family would go down to SC every year for the 4th of July and I remember seeing all the billboards for miles and then passing South of the Boarder and always wondering what it was like when (if ever) it was actually thriving. Because even back then the place looked old and rundown with hardly any people there and most of the attractions/amenities closed. I don’t understand how they’ve stayed in business this whole time.
This place looks awesome! Kind of reminds me of Coombs, a super fun place on the island. You guys would love it. They're known for the famous goats on the roof. You can eat lunch and watch goats mosey around above you. It's really cool. All sorts of neat shops, too.
Yup! I’m an 80s/90s kids, and I grew up in North Western part of Virginia and we took I95 to family in South Carolina and of course Disney. If we were anywhere close to SOB, we stopped. My Dad got a kick out of the place too, and as a kid, I thought it was absolutely magical. Not sure why, but I thought it was a bit for fu because My brother and I got to do more there than at Disney. Anyway, thanks for the trip back in time for those fond memories!!!
I made many trips with my family down I-95 from New Jersey to, not Disney World, but Hilton Head Island, SC, back in the 70s. I remember all of the South Of The Border billboards. Back then, they were not so PC. "Tequila Ze Time" and "Pedro's Weather Report: Chili Today, Hot Tamale." It got so my father would always say, "South of the Border!" as soon as we saw the first one. But alas, we never stopped. Never. South of the Border was so not my parents' kind of place.
In the 70's. My sister & brother in law would always stop for fireworks and a trunk full of cigarettes that my sister would keep in her deep freezer for the rest of the year! LOL!
I have heard of this place over the years but I have never been there myself. It looks awesome and I have some friends who went there a few times in the 90s on their way through that area and always loved it
Here in Texas we have Bucees so idk what id do at a place like South of the Border. Bucees is AMAZING. The food there is maybe the best food you'll ever eat at an American truck stop.
Used to be when you pulled in and parked, after you left your car theyd stick a south of the border bumper sticker on your car. Also they did that at marineland.
I'm 52 years old I went there when I was 10 and I still remember my father not getting me the jumping beans because he didn't want them bouncing around his car and he got me like $200 in fireworks
We drove by there the other day. Its starting to look really run down compared to when I 1st remember seeing it 20 years or so ago. Hopefully it doesn't go under!
I’ve never heard of this place in all the trips to Florida I’ve had. Was there last week and got home Saturday night although not on 95. As a side note I don’t like anything about Florida and never have… but my mom and sister are there.
I used to love stopping there on my way to Mrytle Beach, because Dillon was the turnoff from 95 for us. Those billboards really built up interest and anticipation. It's a shame that the old, weird America is dying and being replaced by generic corporate culture.
@@NerdOutWithMe Heh, not like a wife and kid is going to show up out of nowhere ready for a road trip..... (cautiously looks behind for the ex) ....😬 Would love to do it!! Maybe someday.
I voted to "SAVE PEDRO" this time, I'm sure SC voted not to save them... At least we are safe from political correctness doing away with it now I reckon
Did you ever go to South of the Border???
I have never been, but it's on my bucket list for the next time I'm rolling down the east coast.
yessss! I and my family couldn't wait to get there. We always stayed at the Oasis for 2 weeks every summer. Everything you've said is so true. South of the Border was amazing
Yes !
Of course we did! Waking up in the way-way back of the car, looking up and seeing that Sombrero in the sky WE KNEW lol.😊
I went there a bunch of times back in the 1980s absolutely love the place

Thank you for the amazing memories of me and my family
That place looks amazing! Great vid! 👍 =)
Was half the fun of driving to Disney!
Been there many times since 1986. Stayed there several times too.
We used to stop at one on the way to our Grandma's in South Carolina. It must have been like a smaller side store though, it wasn't as big as this one. It was more just a small gift shop/firework stand. Still had the billboards though.
Yeah, nothing but good memories 😎
A must stop during any trip to Disney
When I lived in Miami, we stopped by twice a year when we would visit Grandparents in NC. Such a cool / weird place
I was writing to say hello and I hope you folks are doing great. Have a great day.
I’m typing this in south of the border and let me tell you this is one unique experience. The park here is incredibly run down and I love it! This place could use some refurbishing but I love this place regardless
I used to teach/coach in Myrtle Beach and we played Dillon High every year and we always stopped there after the game
sounds like heaven!
@@madpajamas7628 especially after a win 😀
Win or lose... you guys won!

i hear it can be sketchy sometimes. I had a friend who worked there for a bit and said it had its ups and downs.
My uncle was the same. It was all about the challenge of getting to Disney in the quickest time. LOL
I don't think I have been, but I would love to go there!
You would really enjoy it.
I too have been here at one time or another. It’s interesting for sure.
We lived in South Georgia and traveled a lot so South of the Border was a yearly staple for us!
Wow me to man growing up in the 80s 90s. Drove from jersey aswell.

This place was the best part of the family trip from Boston to Disney World. Brings back great childhood memories 🚘⛽
Agreed!

You had us at goats on the roof....
@@NerdOutWithMe haha! Last time I was there, two goats squared off and I was afraid they would tumble off the roof. They held it together, though.
The billboards were glorious! They really built up the anticipation 😅
Most exciting part of driving down I-95!

We went back and forth from PA to Florida as a kid and my parents would never stop here... I feel like my life is incomplete...
You must right the wrong!
I got to go to south of the border when i was very young, so i barely remember it. i do still have a bumper sticker from there though
Heck yeah! I have stopped here a bunch of times. My parents claim to have stayed in the motel that is on site.
Ahhh, now I know where my friend's older brother picked up all those fireworks when they were on vacation.
I made many trips with my family down I-95 from New Jersey to, not Disney World, but Hilton Head Island, SC, back in the 70s. I remember all of the South Of The Border billboards. I am from the other side of the country but I can see myself going to the east coast just to check this out.
Worth it.
That place looks awesome, I live north of the border so I've never been there.
It's def worth checking out if you ever head that way.
One of my favorite pit stops
I have heard of this place over the years but I have never been there myself. It looks awesome and I have some friends who went there a few times in the 90s on their way through that area and always loved it
My friend took a pic there in 1992 and I thought she was in Mexico lol I was 12 and never heard of that place

The good times
Admittedly I've never heard of this place. But it does look cool and to me seems like it could well be a destination in it's own right. Cool video.
Def a destination for a short day trip. And for a kid from NJ, it was only second to Disney.
Never heard of the place but it looks awesome.
Def worth hitting up if you're ever close by.
I'm 52 years old I went there when I was 10 and I still remember my father not getting me the jumping beans because he didn't want them bouncing around his car and he got me like $200 in fireworks
WELL done Video !
Thanks!
I love stopping at ridiculous places like this and have been upset during every car ride when someone drove right past
Look, .run down now!
We drove by there the other day. Its starting to look really run down compared to when I 1st remember seeing it 20 years or so ago. Hopefully it doesn't go under!
I can't imagine it will ever die. I hope not! I was sort of hoping with road trips making a resurgence they would maybe fix it up a bit.
I’ve never heard of this place in all the trips to Florida I’ve had. Was there last week and got home Saturday night although not on 95. As a side note I don’t like anything about Florida and never have… but my mom and sister are there.
good job, good video
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Love it even though never experienced it (yes I worked out my password - hahaha)
Best place in SC
I think we counted, back in the late 80s, 97-98 billboards total.. can anybody give an updated number?
I used to love stopping there on my way to Mrytle Beach, because Dillon was the turnoff from 95 for us. Those billboards really built up interest and anticipation.
It's a shame that the old, weird America is dying and being replaced by generic corporate culture.
Truth. I love all the old spots.
Oh man.... I have neither been to South of the Border or Disney. Such a gaping hole in my life!!
Time to rectify that my good man.

ok, so now i have to stop here. i only live 200 miles away. day trip?
Do it
Hate to break the news but they unfortunately just demolished the site 😕
Just read they are only doing renovations. So all is well!
I went there back in 1998 I had one thing on my mind was fireworks
Heck yeah.
