Leaving Florida for the north, I have taken state routes across the border several times. Heading up into Georgia on some back roads. Passing through some interesting little towns. Waycross, Georgia makes me want to sing. Lots of music came out of that town with the various music festivals and several songs with Waycross, Georgia in the song.
Every summer in the 70's we would drive from NY to Florida and the highlight was stopping at South of the Border. Fun fact back in the 70's that place was so crowed and it was hard to cross the road. My Mom made a suggestion and that foot bridge was her suggestion. She got some cool stuff from them for it.
SOUTH OF THE BORDER! I remember going through there back in the 70s and it was like brand new looking, and packed with people. If I remember correctly, fireworks were legal there but not in North Carolina which brought people in from the north. There were large Billboards for up to 100 miles off I-95 in both directions, including one that said "BACK UP AMIGO, YOU MISSED IT!". Great memories!
I remember in the early 70s "South of the Border" was HUGE and packed with people. I couldnt wait to get there after all the signs. Went back for the first time in 2014 on a Fla to NJ drive and it was really sad. Almost no people. Shops and attractions empty, place sorta run-down. I was shocked. I guess thats the way with everything these days.
Every summer from 79-93 my parents always drove down from PA to South Of The Border. We’d start from Thursday and come home Sunday afternoon. When my brother didn’t have to work, he’d come with us. They had waterbeds for the honeymooners. There were Indian bingo tents when I last went there. Every six months or so I call them and get bumper stickers and postcards sent to me to keep the memories alive. I think the hat stopped going up before we started going there. The rides stopped working in the early 90’s. The steakhouse was awesome!! I hope to go back there before I wed my fiancé just to introduce my childhood to him. He’d love it!!
South of the Border is legendary! Always stopped here every year on the way home from Myrtle Beach or Disney World as a kid. Great memories! Thanks for sharing this incredible place, Adam!
I remember SOB from 1969 a family trip with two other families. We were shocked to see it too. We did see the signs I do remember that. No pandemics then so the parking lot was very full. I think some of the boys went to the Arcade. The girls went shopping. That was a fun trip.
Nice video but a place where you missed or may not have known about when you were in Walterboro, SC, was the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial of WWII (Walterboro Airfield). Over 500 men faced discrimination and segregation while training there from 4/44 to 10/45. This is where some of the "Red Tail Angels" as they were called by the white bomber pilots flew out of. Keep up the good work!
I worked here soon after graduating high school a short time. The Video Power sign was placed in front of what was then the Monte Carlo Arcade. I still don't know what they were thinking when using video power on the sign though.
My dad and I go to Myrtle Beach every spring to a big classic car show and we always stop off at South of the Border. Unfortunately the show was canceled this year due to the virus. Thank you so much for this video. That really put a smile on my face and hope for next year.
I think South of the Borders hayday was the 90s. They had a nice size amusement area ( not the same area it's at now), a train ride that went around the whole property, a VR ride and casinos. That building on top of the hill near the mini golf course used to be a casino.
Pedro’s South of the Border. Yessss. I was hoping you’d stop here. Such a crazy old tourist trap. Used to stop there every time on road trips when I was younger.
Did your family play the "who can spot the big Pedro's Sombrero first" game while driving? You're lucky though. My dad never stopped because he wanted to always make good time.
I went there a few years ago! We bought sombreros at the gift shop and wore them while we ate chili dogs at one of the restraunt which really make me question my ability to make good decisions 😂
I have traveled this stretch of road for over 60 years and I still love it. Look forward to it again soon. The SOB signs used to start showing up about 200 miles out. US 301 was the route to take before I-95 was built.
Wow ! 30 years ago we stopped here late at night and place was deserted. Was a little scary. Does anyone remember the 3-D signs along I95 "100 miles to the SoB"? Those were iconic in themselves.
I remember seeing South of the Border as a kid and always wanting to stop there but my mom was like “we’re not going to that tourist trap!” I remember seeing the signs and also once you saw it...that sombrero tower! Always wanted to go up that for sure, and I remember they had rides. Too bad they couldn’t have made the place a destination and had a full blown amusement park!
I'm up in New England, and every time we've been to Disney we "just *HAVE* to" stop at this place on the way down (dad's afraid of flying). It's very much a joke spot, but the quality, size, and hype-up on the billboards coming towards SotB is at a scale I've never seen. Very entertaining every time, just to remember how dumb of an idea it is...but I can't lie, I do love going there every time. Also, I've had the best burger in my life at this place. I don't know who was the chef that day, but holy crap, the seasoning on the meat blew every other burger I had out the park. Haven't had it nearly as good since 2017, but I'm still hoping I'll get that perfect burger again someday!
@@RLBS61 Oh, it was only a one time thing. I'm a bit of a picky eater at their place, so I usually just grab the burger for something filling fully knowing it's not amazing... but, that one time, the chef knew what he was doing and it actually WAS amazing.
Adam is truly one of the greatest videographers of all time! Someday his name will go into history next to the likes of Lewis and Clark and Huell Howser!! His documentation of places and things that would fade away into time without anyone knowing are legendary! Adam the Woo. A name studied in history class! How fun would school be when homework is "Watch TheDailyWoo"" episodes 2020-35 thru 45! Thanks Adam. Your adventures are fun, but also educational.
I agree 100% true and talk about history you found a Stucky's! When I was little every time we went by one I would say, "Lets go get stuck at Stucky's!"
We always stop at South of the Border on our way to Walterboro S.C and Lakeland Fl. to visit family!! The dome has the indoor pool in it!! We enjoy going there every year!! Thanks Adam!!
I remember the first time we ever stopped at SOTB, it was 1968 (moving from NY to Fla), it only had the restaurant, fireworks store, a bunch of those fiberglass animals, a small hotel, and a putt putt golf course. A few years later they added the Sombrero tower and the small carnival, then later all the other stuff. Always loved stopping there, and always loved the funny cheesy billboard signs, the signs really helped build up the anticipation of stopping (the owner was a genius doing that). My favorite SOTB Billboard was always: Pedro's Weather Report: Chili today Hot Tamale
As a boy we drove from Florida to New Jersey every summer. This was a HUGE thing for us kids. The signage along the highway was always a source of entertainment. Before I-95 was opened through Dillon you actually went underneath the first version of "Pedro" on the highway. I went there over a decade ago and it was extremely run down....it's nice to see it being in good condition now with the bright colors. The over sensitive people have had an impact on it, the signage has been changed a lot because it was deemed "racist"......the attraction used to be heavily Mexican themed and merchandise was actually shipped from Mexico to stock the shelves. Always amazes me that it takes white people to tell minorities they should be offended. Thanks for sharing !!!!!
Man this brings back so many great memories of driving from Massachusetts to Florida with my family as a kid in the 80s We had a extended cab pickup with a cap on the back my Mom and Dad put a mattress in the back plus me and my 2 sisters and off we went. I still remember going in the fireworks store at 10 or 11 years old and it was a teenage or pre teen boys wet dream seeing all the fireworks (which have always been banned in MA but boy they had everything EVEN QUATERSTICKS !!!😁😁😁😁 Man that place was heaven to me and we had gone to FLORIDA a few times and I spent a good portion of my birthday money there 🙂🙂 well before we made it to Florida. My sisters always held their money for Disney but THIS WAS MY DISNEY WORLD. Now at 47 I'm planning on driving to Florida with my dad who's 78 and you can bet this will be one of our stops. The wife and kids like to fly straight to Florida but I'm doing the road trip with my dad to spend quality time with him. Noone lasts forever but I hope he does and this is top of our bucket list just me dad and 3000 plus miles of open road.
I'm in Massachusetts also. My folks live in Florida. . We have driven 95 a few times to visit. And stop at Pedro's if it fits out schedule. Long drive for sure.
You are taking me back to my childhood. I was born in Birmingham and spent many years in the Tallahassee area. I rode down many of those back roads. Thanks.
Stuckeys is now operated by the Great Granddaughter of the Founder and they are working on a comeback. They even opened a brand new candy plant in Ga. Making fresh pecan rolls and other goodies. Check them out , they are on FB and IG.
My Grandma is from the area of South of the Border, she actually dated the owners son back in the 1960s. South of the Border use to be the hangout spot and nightlife for a lot of the people in that area.
We use to live in North Carolina and would travel to Florida to see my Grandparents my sister and I were always so excited because we knew we were going to stop at South of the Border. My Mother and Father always got a kick out of it . My Mother would tell us to get some sleep, but we were way to excited about seeing Grandma and Grandpa, being on the road and those creative billboards for South of the Boarder each one deferred from the others. Every mile just ramped up the excitement. As a kid it was the one and only place we were allowed to get fireworks, I never did get to buy a Sombrero, my Father would say "that's pretty expensive and this is a long trip, maybe next time".? Man what a place, like a mini midnight Disney world in the middle of nothing but blacktop and pine trees. Such great memories. Crazy Cool Americana . LOVE IT ! THANK'S WOO!
Being from California I’m enjoying these eastern backroad trips of yours, Adam. Thanks for the many adventures and memories. Just found your videos in 2022 so I got a head start on some of them already. ❤️🙏🏻👍
Hi Adam. Those old painted on brick walls that signs you like are called "ghost signs", not a haunted thing but named after the fact that they are fading over time. I love them too.
I have traveled that route and past that place so many times throughout my military career. It's good to see some familiar things are still around among these crazy times.
Bad roads in south Carolina.... Hold my beer- Massachusetts Seriously Inwas driving south to Florida through 95 and gps had me get off one exit and had me on some very very back gravel road. In fields. I thought we were gonna end up lost. But eventually got to the hotel. And lo and behold there was another exit to 95 about 1/2 mile past the hotel in the other direction. GPS trying to get us lost.
Love how you find beauty and interesr in the simplest things...pretty clouds...bridge structure...old buoldings. Wonderful...so fun to earch your videos.
It's South of the Mason Dixie Line border. This was one of many attractions for tourist that were created prior to the construction of the national freeway system. These places gave tourist driving for the north to the south mainly Florida a chance to take a break form the long road trip.
I REALLY DO ENJOY WATCHING ALL YOUR VIDEOS ADAM TAKES MY MIND OFF THE WORLD FOR 30 MINUTES! THANK YOU SO MUCH, YOU WERE 20 MILES FROM ME A FEW DAYS AGO WHEN YOU STOPPED IN CORBIN , KY AT THE K.F.C MUSEUM !
I was born and raised about 25 minutes from this place, and I've only been a handful of times. I didn't even know people still went there. Brings back memories.
Just made the drive from PA to Daytona Beach and back in August to take my grandson to college. I have made many runs up and down I-95 over the last 30 years or so. I feel like I know every mile of that road, at least from the Philly area to the I-20 junction. It's always significant to see the SOTB observation tower (the sombrero) in the distance, as well as all the signs for 100+ miles North and South of it. Adam, if you get a chance to head over to Easley, SC, say hello to my daughter and her three children. Miss those not-little-anymore grandbabies so much! And thank you for these signature road vlogs. Always happy to see them! BTW, I've never been to Townsend, GA, but maybe someday I'll go and see my kin!
Thank you! I haven’t been to South of the border since the 80’s, seeing all the signs leading to it was fun seeing as a kid, also all the lights at night time.. I believe they had a Ferris wheel at one time..I always wondered if it was sill around
You got good impulse. Loving this route you’re taking. A lot of cool things to see along the way. South of the Border is a really cool place. Never seen a jail as part of a water tower before. Great starting out in Georgia. Thank you for bringing us along with you. Stay safe. God bless
When I lived in Va. we made The I95 run to Fl. too many times. SOB and another stop we did was JR's Cigars in NC. It was a huge store with cigars being only a very minor part of what they sold. I remember the signs were everywhere on the side of the highway. Great video Adam, I think your at your best on road trips !!!
We always stop at South of the Border when travelling up 95. Lots of nostalgic roadside goodness. Stayed there once as a kid on our way to Disney before we moved to FL. My brother and I loved it when we were kids...probably would have different opinions of the rooms as an adult lol
Fifty years ago that place was buzzing.I remember eating a plate of silver dollar pancakes for breakfast there as a kid when we stayed over night there.Looks like a ghost town now.
Look , look up in the sky 😬 !! Hey adam , we're enjoying the roadtrip scenery 😀 , we hope you have a good time and a safe adventure back here to California 😎 !
I spent five months at NAS Glynco in Brunswick in 1973, then on to MCAS Beaufort until August 1976. I have been up and down all those roads and through all those towns many a time. I can still almost recite all those Pedro billboards that lined 95 for miles and miles....
I've been to South of the Border once. Even got to spend the night at the on site motel there. A storm came through and knocked out power there and the surrounding area for a few hours.
Childhood memories traveling from NJ to Orlando, Florida .. South of The Border was our main destination I believe some has forgotten to enjoy life and This what i love about you
TheDailyWoo...Adam, you might be old enough to remember the longtime CBS television Journalist, who did the “On The Road” segments for the CBS Sunday Morning show, Charles Kuralt? His road travels and travails were very much like what you’re doing with your “off the beaten path” adventures, and remind me very much of what he did for decades - bringing the viewer some not too often seen items of curiosity and interest. Love your version of what Charles Kuralt did years ago. Who generally gets to see these tucked away 25 foot cows? Excellent stuff. Anyway, thanks for your great content. I’ve been a fan of yours for years, and would love to meet you and shake your hand some day. - from an enthusiastic supporter in the Orlando area...
@@TheDailyWoo I've often thought growing up in So Cal that the age of Kitsch was nearly dead. As here almost everything just gets torn down unless it's in a big Corp. owned amusement or theme park. Then you show it all across the Country. It's comforting in a weird way.
I love your sense of humour! I just got back from a job that took me to South Carolina and I stayed at South of the Border. I haven't been that way in 15 years before that. Thanks for sharing your journey!

Please Adam, head up to New England first, then West. I would love to see you there for the fall foliage and covered bridges.
Did you ever come back up here to Winchester Virginia lot of interesting stuff for you to film around here
I'm pretty certain there's some souvenir shot glasses that have remained on those store shelves since the 70s.
Those are the best finds.
I'm sure of it.
Stopping at South of Border...a tradition for me on the way to WDW back in the 70s and 80s.
Every summer in the 70's we would drive from NY to Florida and the highlight was stopping at South of the Border. Fun fact back in the 70's that place was so crowed and it was hard to cross the road. Really enjoying your travels - helps us each day
My Wife (r.i.p.)& I stayed at that motel on the way back to Jersey. I had to change my brake pads there
I remember SOB from 1969 a family trip with two other families. We were shocked to see it too. We did see the signs I do remember that. No pandemics then so the parking lot was very full. I think some of the boys went to the Arcade. The girls went shopping. That was a fun trip.
Sorry Adam, parks closed. Pedro out front should have told you 🤷♂️

The Reptile Lagoon is pretty awesome!
I first saw SOB as a youngin in 1980. Pretty sure that's where the obsession with roadside attractions all started. Happy trails out there.
I think South of the Borders hayday was the 90s. They had a nice size amusement area ( not the same area it's at now), a train ride that went around the whole property, a VR ride and casinos. That building on top of the hill near the mini golf course used to be a casino.

I love South of the Border since the 70's !! Santee , SC here I come......😁💖
Nice! I didn't know things like this still existed.. Well.. I haven't ever seen a roadside attraction this extensive.. Great video!
Enjoyed the classic style vlog thanks Adam the Woo!!!
I was born and raised about 25 minutes from this place, and I've only been a handful of times. I didn't even know people still went there. Brings back memories.
Thank You Adam keep showing us videos. Its like a mini vacation. From Lou Anne C.
That lil church is beautiful! Wow always amazed at the things u find in these towns. I reallllly need a roadtrip stat🤗😎🚙🚲🛴🛹🛵🚏🛣🛤⛽
We’ve been to South of the Border it’s really a cool roadside attraction
I remember that there use to be a ferris wheel there. I know bc I rode it with my mother. Hehehe. Memories. 🌝
Good ole Pedro’s. Stopped there several times over the years. The observation tower was closed S O B !!!!!!!
I grew up in South Carolina and South of the Border brings back lots of memories!
Chili Today Hot Tamale..the fact Adam didn't get this dad joke seriously bums me out...
"Pedro's Forecast, Chili Today, Hot Tamale" along with "Our Honeymoon Suites are Heir Conditioned."
I'd love to see a video where he goes back but gives the tour like it has just opened with the history of this place.
Your tutorials are the best. After work, watching these videos chill me out. 🤗
Thank you! I haven’t been to South of the border since the 80’s, seeing all the signs leading to it was fun seeing as a kid, also all the lights at night time.. I believe they had a Ferris wheel at one time..I always wondered if it was sill around
I'm almost positive they did,
Watching for the SOTB signs was always the highlight of road trips for me as a kid as well!
South of the border goodness! Thanks for all you do , Adam. Safe travels.👍🏼🤘🏼😎
Enjoying the hell out of the road trip. Thanks for the videos, bud.
While my family loves the Disney vlogs it nice to take a side trip and slow down a bit from time to time. Thanks...
Coffee and Woo!! The great part of waking up. Sounds like that would be a great jingle for a coffee commercial.
We very much enjoy your roadside / old town adventures. Thanks!
the billboards leading up to SOB remind me of the signs for "the THING" on the west coast..
good ol pedro lol
You should stop in Brunswick County, VA.... the real home of Brunswick stew....
I agree
"the thing" was referenced in a '90s song by a group called "the men". I think they were a one hit wonder. 😃
You got good impulse. Loving this route you’re taking. A lot of cool things to see along the way. South of the Border is a really cool place. Never seen a jail as part of a water tower before. Great starting out in Georgia. Thank you for bringing us along with you. Stay safe. God bless
You should have tried the blenheim ginger ale that is made on property.
You can buy it all over the place so he didn't miss out. It's spicy though.
I stayed at south of the border 2 times in my life!!! I loved it!
thank you adam , this one was cool :)
Always pass by here on my trips to and from VA to GA. Always been curious about what it looked like close up. Thanks for the lookaround!
Jr's is no more/closed up a few years ago.....
It sad. I remeber always driving by SOTB as a kid and it was always packed! It was always my dream to go up in the Big Sombrero.
We started going to Florida from NJ in the mid 80's even by then it was a ghost town.
@@bonniehowell4259 I remember one year when we was there I went in there
I have pictures of my family and I when we moved from Connecticut to Florida back in 1992 lol glad it’s still there
The mid 90's that place stayed packed out and had so many lights it was blinding from the highway. Weird to see it as a ghost town.
It has been going since at least the 1970s too.
@@elisahayes631 Try 1950.
Look , look up in the sky 😬 !! Hey adam , we're enjoying the roadtrip scenery 😀 , we hope you have a good time and a safe adventure back here to California 😎 !
I've been South of the Border one time that place is a very interesting
I spent five months at NAS Glynco in Brunswick in 1973, then on to MCAS Beaufort until August 1976. I have been up and down all those roads and through all those towns many a time. I can still almost recite all those Pedro billboards that lined 95 for miles and miles....
I've been to South of the Border once. Even got to spend the night at the on site motel there. A storm came through and knocked out power there and the surrounding area for a few hours.
Childhood memories traveling from NJ to Orlando, Florida .. South of The Border was our main destination
I believe some has forgotten to enjoy life and This what i love about you
The sombrero is closed, that’s disappointing. When I was a kid, my family stopped there every trip to Florida.
delawarepilot According to their web sight it is open at certain times. 🤷♀️
Such a neat roadside attraction. It’s sad to see it falling into disrepair and so few lights working at night on the sombreo tower.
I do , love his work
@@TheDailyWoo I've often thought growing up in So Cal that the age of Kitsch was nearly dead. As here almost everything just gets torn down unless it's in a big Corp. owned amusement or theme park. Then you show it all across the Country. It's comforting in a weird way.
Pretty sure Adam is living the life I want. Fire halls, water towers, abandoned buildings, small towns road trips!
Last time I was at the South of the Boarder store was 1969.
Yeah, fireworks and 10 years old, it was a fantasy world.
I love your sense of humour! I just got back from a job that took me to South Carolina and I stayed at South of the Border. I haven't been that way in 15 years before that. Thanks for sharing your journey!
I think that "walking stick" was actually a Shepard's Crook. Back to church you go, Adam!
Catch up all your videos!....... Piggly wiggly 🐷 loved it!😂
I pass South of the Border all the time and have always wondered what there is to do there. Thanks to you I now know!😂
Fill up the gas tank, buy a shot glass, eat a steak, buy some fireworks. No bumper cars or sombrero tower for you!
I have been to South Of The Border. Good food cool gift shop. Thank for bringing us along.
