As a former gameshop manager, I also know that GW has MINIMUM stock quantities of their products for Local gamestores that you have to maintain if you want to keep getting the stuff at all.... which is also predatory and horrible but also adds a level of malice to their practices that the general public isn't aware of. I should add that the minimum was basically 1-3 of every single product, including codexes they knew were about to go out of print (and they stopped the buyback for old products) and also keeping the paint rack full at at least 6 deep.

Nothing new in marketing going on here, and nothing new for GW, they've done this before........and yet, the FLGS has survived. Take a walk down the breakfast cereal isle, or the potato chip isle, or anywhere else in the supermarket and you'll see the same crowding out of the 'other brand' because of minimum stocking levels specified in contract. Same thing with just about any other product at any other store.

Oh hey. I'm in a capital city in the US. There are 7 or 8 game shops in this city. Games Workshop opened a store a few years ago. They closed for lunch and had bad hours. They gave all the local stores a hard time getting the warhammer items until the popular ones where many people bought and had weekly events stopped selling GW. You're correct. GW just makes nonstop bad decisions. The independent stores couldn't get the product if they wanted it and got tired of trying. On the other hand the GW store was just poor and nobody shopped there. So the game went from very popular in this city to newer store workers asking "what is 40k?"

I live in North London. There are _ZERO_ independent hobby stores around. I hate it, because if I need anything that isn't a Citadel miniature or paint, I can't get it without ordering online. It's a miserable experience.
So I was elated when I went on holiday to the Czech Republic and found a shop in Plzeň called "Colours of Warriors". I felt cheated, because this shop carries _everything_ you need to do hobby stuff. Magnets, scenery, brushes, sculpting tools, paints, dice, space to paint and game; my local GW store rarely has _glue_ in stock.
And I realised just how sad it is that I can reach that shop in just 12 minutes while walking. I miss it every time I go home. My borough has no trams, no trolleybuses, no direct trains, and buses that get stuck in traffic. And only one piddly little shop that's overpriced, only hosts games for just 2 hours a week, with nothing else until you reach central London, at huge personal cost to do so. Why is life like this?

Leisure Games in Finchley gone then? Yeah, 80's there were several Games shops in London, then GW Retail started cribbing GW Wholesale's homework and opening shops near existing Games Shops and by near I mean usually in about 100 yards away), pretty much killed off most of them. A few lingered a while thanks to the arrival of M:TG and other card games but it was a slow death for them, often cutting staff, cutting costs, cutting opening hours. Leisure Games was the only one that survived the 90's because they successfully launched a Web Store.
I've not used a GW product since.

Leisure Games seems like a nice place, but it's still well over an hour away from where I live. It's absurd how rare these shops are, as well as how poor public transport infrastructure and cycle routes are in London (unless you specifically want to go in or out of central London...).
Almost all shops are franchises; I needed magnets last month - Wickes, Homebase, The Works, Hobbycraft, GW, WH Smiths... these are the _only_ shops around, in multiples, and none of them sell them. I walk into just _one shop_ in Plzeň, and they have a bigger range than Element Games! And they aren't even the only model shop. They literally thrive because GW hasn't set up shop there.
And the best bit? Frenchies is on the next corner from them, and they do the _best_ English breakfast you'll ever eat. They even make the baked beans from scratch! This is why I love independent shops.

If i cant buy at my local gameshop.... i wont buy at all. Prices + Shipping is simply to much....
Guess im full in on 3d printing then... Getting a printer (already have one) and making your own stuff, is pretty much like 25% the price, and there is a ton of talented creators out there making miniatures that looks a lot like the GW stuff, close enough to be almost the same, but still differnt enough to not breach copyright.
Just printed out 100 Krieg Guards Men, a Rogal Dorn Proxy, 2 Field ordenance batteries and 3 Heavy Wepon teams. from stationforge.... Files, Resin and and printer combined was 450£.... and the printer iself was the 250£ and thats a one time thing....
I would be 450£ + Shipping just to get 100 Cadian Shock Troops,, 3 heavy weapons teams and a rogal Dorn from GWs store.

After reading the second line I wanted to comment that "and if you're running Krieg, you're probably in the green by the time your second print is finished", and then I read the rest of it, haha. Most GW armies at this point will cost you more than a standard resin printer, resin, and the STLs combined, so adding "and now you have to import Warhammer if you don't have a local GW store, or if it doesn't have what you need in stock" really makes it not even debatable.

    • @bertruslanus
      @bertruslanus 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes. And the rules are balanced 1 or 2 times each year, for all the factions at the same time. The rules are free and there is no codex creep. The companion app is great and free. The models are preassembled with no options so if you like building models it's not the same. But on the plus side, no build options means that the models will forever be relevant. Not like with Warhammer 40k where you don't know if in the next edition GW will make the build they were previously encouraging obsolete or illegal because they decided buying new models isn't enough. You have to build the one you already bought again... With asoiaf you can just enjoy the game at your own pace. If you want to play with updated rules, all you have to do is print the latest version of the tactic cards you plan to use (14 per faction + 6 per commander) and slide them in your sleeved cards, update the app and you are good to go. Models are not cheap considering they are prebuild but it cost way less than GW mosels and all factions have an affordable starter box to begin with.

as someone from the gunpla modelkit community. This is going to be so much worse for you guys than you think.
For us it started with a few kits being official bandai online store exclusives, which they justified by saying that the kits were based on to obscure designs, to be able to sell them at retail. As time went on however, more popular kits started becoming online store exclusive. Then the amount of regular retail releases started dropping.
Now we are in a situation where almost no new regular retail releases are being made. The online store exclusive kits rarely get reprinted. And most of the world still does not have access to the online store. So the only options to buy new kits is resellers, scalpers and shipping small packages around the globe. Causing massive price increases, on to of which you then have to pay import fees.

Don't buy direct from GW, kids! Get your 40k minis second hand and use proxies whenever possible.

In early 2000' I used to paint new releases for the official warhammer store in Milan and the monthly release day was such an event. We received the new products in advance (a month before the official release) because GW wanted the customers to see the new minis shiny and painted at Day 1.
No scalpers, no FOMO, the focus was only on the new minis and the hobby itself. And they made good money from it, GW has never been a charity.
Now, despite having an official warhammer store close to me, the magic of the day 1 of a new release is gone. GW don't send minis in advance anymore to the store, the showcase cabinet is just a collection of the employees' personal minis. GW should really riconsider the way they promote and sell their miniatures.
