    The constant changes and updates that GW are making are starting to get depressing. I love the 40k universe, I love the miniature but I can't help but feel overwhelmed and exploited by having to buy so many things for the rules in such a short amount of time just to be able to play the game. This is quickly changing from a " Miniature Wargame" hobby into a " Miniature Collecting" hobby for me.

    • @lordllewellynofdarkdelight2613
      @lordllewellynofdarkdelight2613 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Overwhelming is right. I love the lore and building models I was hoping to start playing in 10th but I don't want to get jerked around. GW keeps printing books then invalidating them. They did that to Custodes in 9th.

    • @stankobarabata2406
      @stankobarabata2406 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lordllewellynofdarkdelight2613 GW trying to emulate the VG market. It's no longer about "exclusive" or "limited" models that toy companies do, which was GW's original modus operandi, and now they're trying to emulate video games by introducing basically what amounts to their version of "yearly Cod/Fifa titles". Just release new models and books on a semi-annual basis and force people to buy them if they want to stay relevant or participate in mainstream tourneys/games, like how old CoD games immediately lose all technical support once the new title drops so if you wanna stay on top of the curve you gotta buy into it.
      Main reason why I also refuse to participate in the miniature hobby despite being a huge Warhammer fan in general (both oldhammer and 40k, nobody likes AoS so). I've wanted to get into it so bad but GW's horrible practices just keep me away. So instead of getting me and all my friends' money by being consistent and non demanding, they basically discouraged us from ever paying a cent.
      Imagine giving money for a full army of Marines just before Indomitus dropped, I don't remember which edition it was supposed to be, when Primaris got introduced and GW announced they were slowly gonna phase out old models and Firstborn codexes. A full army would cost the average person at least a few hundred dollars bare minimum, and that's not mentioning stuff like making a gaming room and organizing players if you don't have a local club to go to for these things. And not mentioning bonus models or different army comps or even another army that you want to play. So imagine you spent like 500 bucks on a Firstborn army only for GW to come out shortly later and tell you your purchase will be invalidated in the future more or less. You can still keep the minis but for me the fun is using them in a game as much as painting and gazing at them on my shelves.
      They're actively trying to make people NOT want to pay them somehow by being as greedy as possible to the point where it seems pointless to dedicate yourself to something if GW randomly decides to change it, or worse - outdate it entirely and force you to start over from scratch.
      Feelsbadman. I really want to get into the hobby. Maybe 3d printing really is the way, and just use whatever the hell edition I want to use.

      Sadly, I think it's a common problem with management these days - most CEOs, etc, see their tenure as being short term contracts, potentially of about two years, before they move on to another one. This means they fixate on short term results so that they can receive their bonuses, all the while hoping that they will manage to get out before the whole thing comes crashing down.

Like the video-game industry descending into micro-transaction hell, all GW and WotC care about are the big spenders/whales; the people who have been in the hobby so long that no amount of mistreatment and highway robbery will get them to leave. I've never bought a codex or data cards and I never will. Not when the rules constantly get updated and render both of them obsolete. Imagine if, in MTG or any other card game, in order to play you had to buy a 60 dollar book that'd be out of date the moment they restricted a card or fixed errata. In this day and age of digital media it's insanity. And on TOP of that they REMOVED the free index rules so, if you said "You know, I don't like the new rules. I wanna keep playing with the indexes." welp, if you didn't download them you're fat out of luck. We already pay out the nose for the damn little hunks of plastic and yet we're being charged even MORE for the privilege of being able to play with the things we bought.

    I tried playing 40k with my kids.... they enjoyed the novelty but weren't into the special rules and complexity.
    Played one page rules game with them and they loved it.
    I enjoyed both but the kids loving OPR more definitely raised my enjoyment level.
    I understand 3D printing isn't for everyone but the fact I can dream up a scenario and then print/paint the models for it is freedom. I can explore any game system and (at minimal cost) get minis and terrain. Being able to jump to frostgrave/stargrave/five parsecs/five leagues/space weirdos etc etc keeps things fresh and let's my kids come up with exploratory ideas that we can then flesh out/try out.
    I'm a huge fan of 40k lore and have many fond memories of playing in my local store, going to conventions and tournament play. That being said, their corporate culture and attitude towards consumers is astonishingly short sighted and I believe hinders new hobbyists from getting into this amazing hobby.
    Heres the thing. If youre a massive 40k fan i dont hate you. If i disagree with GW practices its not a reflection on you because you love the game. It holds a special place in my heart and i wish the game and GW would improve so that it accessable to as many people as possible.
    Would it have been so prohibitively expensive (with a $60 book) to include updated data sheets with it?
    Why is there not a free (or even reasonably priced) app from GW? These resources tend to bring people into the hobby.
    Why black templars over norn irons?
    Why such hate for a content creator calling out bad business practices? Seriously tho, she likely plays more games workshop games than you do and more frequently.
    I think (that means its an opinion) a lot of what discourse says rings true. If you take a more objective view and compare offerings from other games/companies/systems you will find value and be a happier gamer.

    However, even that wasn't particularly fun for the first time - and if it was a competitive game, it would be weird to expect players to know what secrets lie in the opponent's expensive book.

    I knew it was coming. Of course they'd paywall the content behind the codex system.
    But it's just so boring and annoying. I hoped the codex's would be thinner but cheaper. They could still make more cash, but we wouldn't need to pay as much. But instead they did their usual and just made them more expensive for less content. I really wish they'd just kept the card system for the whole edition. It's been so much easier to play games.
    As for the strats...yeah...what can you say. It's nice to have variety of formations (mostly to justify the codex's I bet), but...they could have done that while still keeping strats simple.
