At 8:40 I mention that "people who talk about the sanctitiy of the lore are casual fans" [sic] This is in reference to the recent deluge of content creators that have jumped on top of the whole female Custodes - many of them having no previous relationship with warhammer, no idea about the lore, but still using the "sanctity of the lore" as a bludgeon to complain about Games Workshop when if they were actual fans of the franchise and had been following it for a while, they'd know that retcons are very common place in Warhammer and that the lore often changes. This isn't about people who are just into Warhammer lore and reading the books etc. Obviously you can be a fan of warhammer that only engages with it via reading the books and following the lore. I know there's plenty of people out there who do so - many because the miniatures are so expensive, and I often argue on this channel that price keeps a lot of fans out of trying the wargame (and this is a major problem actually). That all said, the actual meat of Warhammer has always been the war game and the miniatures at the heart of it.
It seems like a lot of people are jumping down your throat in this one, so let me say that I do think you make good points. You’re absolutely right, GW makes retcons all the time. But I do think that retcons big and small should either serve the narrative or should be avoided. Making Custodes female seems to me to be pretty innocuous. I don’t think it will really change much at all nor come into play outside of getting new female Custodes models which sounds cool.

People that cared about the lore were welcome to the hobby because a bunch of GW designers were passionate about the lore. They are retired now. Now what counts for the faceless GW design studio is profit. Like GW had a strong aspect of profit-seeking which was used by people who were passionate about the lore to have careers. There's a few reasons why the fans are mad. And no, it's not because they hate women. We now know that this change is connected to the upcoming show. Though Henry Cavil is at the helm of creative direction, the main entities are Games Workshop and Amazon Studios. Amazon does not feel like they can achieve success from a show character belonging to the Sisters of Silence. Hence, the name, they dont talk much. The sisters of battle are "too religious" and they believe that will also turn off viewers(all 10 of them that give a crap!). They've debated using a female inquisitor, but similar issues arose. This is where randomly adding a female custodes or two has come it. Either directly or indirectly requested by amazon, they ultimately required a suitable female lead character. Thus Games Workshop gave them a couple. The outrage comes from further broken trust and we thus start down a path that end badly. Financially speaking of course.

The agenda in question consists in part of an obsession over representation of just about anything, an attitude which many fear will ruin the hobby in the long run, over years' worth of changes. You could certainly argue this is a slippery slope argument, but we've seen it happen in other fandoms, so concern is warranted. Adding female custodes is not the agenda itself, it is merely testing the waters, and so the many respond with a "Don't give them an inch" strategy.

I mean I lapsed playing table top longer than many fans, including this uploader have been into the hobby. Started back when your pocket money would buy you a diecast model blister or box of plastic at the local hobby shop or GW store, my life moved on from being able to play and then when I could GW went insane with the prices and I would still have to travel to find somewhere to play so I read books and play video games. I have early to mid 90s models for 40k and Epic 40k floating around in my horde of junk I filled my home with over the years, but because its been more than 25 years since I rolled a dice apparently I don't matter. Warhammer isn't for everyone it seems.

The funny part to me is that people who just shrug their shoulders at this change have told me that female Space Marines would be the red line for them. Yes yes there are female Space Marines in Rogue Trader but I would say 80% of fans don't even remember that. Female Space Marines will happen now, they just started with custodes first because they aren't as iconic as Space Marines are.
Discourse, it isn't specifically the change. It is much much bigger than the change. It is part of a trend that has affected EVERY fandom. Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Dune, Terminator, Aliens, Predator, hell, nearly every fandom has been changed to be more "inclusive". All for the worse. Warhammer doesn't need added diversity, it literally covers the gambit on diversity. Adding a female custodes does not improve inclusivity to the hobby. But GWs response to people who questioned it has definitely damaged inclusivity. The gatekeepers are on high alert, because they have seen what happened in the other fandoms. Where the actual fans were castigated as bigots and run out of their fandom so the inclusivity could commence. The fans are right to be angry. This isn't like a usual GW retcon. This is getting on the pander train. How many times has GW stated they aren't a games company, they are a miniature company? They openly despise the fanbase who actually care about the lore they've created. Fans are just another paypig that should give money and keep their mouths shut. I get your point on certain people talking about this aren't real fans, just hopping on the bandwagon, but people like me who've played since 1st edition? When all the armies were in a single book? Who only had the lore in fluff paragraphs in said book? Who only got real lore when the codexes were invented? We speculated the entire Horus Heresy before Dan Abnett wrote his first novel. I have watched every fandom I have ever loved be turned upside down and destroyed in the past decade. It is ridiculous. Retcons do happen. For instance, originally, the two missing primarchs were intended to be open slots so fans could make their own chapters and lore that didn't rely on other chapters history. Originally, Chaos was split into Chaos and Renegades. Huron Blackheart wasn't a possessed monster, he was a captain that rebelled and took his company with him. Necrons were mere raiders that could just show up during a battle. Hit and run. Squats? Genestealer Cults? Looted tanks? Yeah, I'm familiar with retcons. This is not a normal retcon.
Anyone who criticises people for having a problem with female Custodes clearly knows nothing about the WHY they're upset. I have to disagree about your views on lore. Lore is the only reason I got into 40k. Dont get me wrong I enjoy the game but there are a lot of (usually cheaper) games out there. The reason I chose 40k over them was purely because of the lore.

And a lot back when I started playing could be played on smaller tables as well instead of the massive tables 40k uses. So if I just wanted to "bash toys together" they would have been better options. But 40k had the best story for the armies and models an interesting living world for those armies. So I went with 40k.

Without lore, those figurines would lose 90% of the price that people would be willing to pay for them. Not to mention books and game licenses. This is also not a small "pocket money" for GW, and without the lore it would have nothing from them. @@Tsunamiieh why not, I play through all the dawn of war games series (expect for 3), played space marine from THQ, regularly read up on the lore often, have a favorite legion (Alpha legion), engage with memes and fan projects like text to speech, had interest in playing imperial guardsmen army (respect the hell of those guys and love playing them in dawn of war) and keep an eye on the property from time to time. I may not be the biggest fan but I still have an interest in the property. Buying the minis and learning to paint them isn’t all that much of a step for me. The female custodes just kicked my interest a lot more simply because it made me think of the ip more and of how it actually enhances the setting for me more. It reinforces my fondness for emperor despite his flaws.

9:10 I chose not to get over it. Instead I quit the hobby altogether when the whole plotline about primarus space marines was introduced. Its safe to say I'm a stubborn old twerp and I'll never get over it. I'm pretty fine with remaining salty over the setting for a number of reasons including this retcon. To me this is just another reason to stay pissed at games workshop. Along my long line of other reasons, inside the personal book of grudges.. That resides in my head. I've said it before but the whole fem-custodies really does feel like GW pissed on a bunch of people and told them it was raining and a bunch of feminist types came out laughing at everybody who was pissed off thinking they won something. Every army in 40k except for Space Marine variants (and genderless aliens like Orks or Tyranids) has female models. People who push for female Space Marines are inherently disignenuous. And it probably would have gone over better if GW admitted this was a change instead of pretending it was always the case. The real question is "why even change it"? What's the benefit? What was the harm? If it was supposed to make the hobby more popular to women, then it will fail, because it's not popular for most PEOPLE on the WHOLE. And the punchline? These changes are not due to representation, it is about enforcing ones ideology in a new space. How on earth does 40k not have enough representation? You got Tallarn desert raiders which are badass, you have Sisters of battle and of silence, you have mixed sex regiments in the Imperial Guard etc etc ad infinitum. Except that representation is the ideology and GW was into representation and diversity for a long time. What has changed is just overall dumbing down of the setting, starting with Space Marines becoming more and more like capeshits and now with the fucking Primaris. As if Space Marines weren't OP enough and stealing the show enough. Big problem is that people who made Wh40k great came from background of history, archeology and historical wargaming. Now these designers are retired and there's only faceless anonymous GW Design Studio. Even John Blanche has retired last year. The problem is loss of talent and loss of design principles. It's a general shift towards Wh40k becoming slop. And also, I suspect that GW was more bound to lore in the past because of Horus Heresy being a cashcow. Now that it's over, lore fans are much less important financially. Like breaking custodes or space marines lore when Horus Heresy was ongoing would be a disaster for GW. Now they can do a reboot and ditch lore fans and get new audience for dumbed-down Wh40k.

Warhammer is more than just a game, its practically a culture and a religion to some people. I wouldn't just call it "just a game". I personally think it's just because it was arguably an unnecessary change in lore, the idea was introduced to millions as a single sentence tweet which made it seem like GW were gaslighting the fanbase and with journalists calling people bigots for being confused about the change is surely making people dig their heels in further. To a lot of people it's probably like if Paramount tweeted "Captain Kirk was always a woman". As you pointed out it's also not a change about female representation as there are women everywhere else throughout the Imperium from the lowly criminal House Esher gangers in the underhive of Necromunda to the High Inquisitors with the authority to issue Exterminatus on entire planets, on top of two entirely female factions. So why is it so important to change Custodes to a mixed faction, especially considering there doesn't seem to be any female models to sell? As you said at 6:11 "Games Workshop try not to depict anything in the Warhammer 40K lore that doesn't have a miniature that can't be bought", so unless they have female miniatures in the works for the release of the new Codex, doesn't it make it even more strange that they would make this change? Although I suppose we'll have to wait and see for that, however it again seems strange to leak the details without confirming that there will be miniatures as well. It might also have something to do with the Amazon 40K series in development being produced by Henry Cavill (whose been put on record as saying that the Custodes are his favorite faction), I've heard rumors that the change might be in order to hit the series DEI target because the Amazon show-runners weren't happy with any of the existing possibilities for female representation so they might have forced GW to make this lore change which is why the messaging around this has been so flippant. I hasten to add that this is all speculation with no solid evidence one way or the other. One last thing, I also have to disagree with you on the lore mainly being secondary to the actual meat of the war game and miniatures, considering, in the 40K universe alone, there's over 450 novels, video games, comics, animations on their streaming platform on top of the Codexes, that's far more than "just a bit off fluff". The vast majority of lore fans whom enjoy the lore for the lore and most probably don't even care about the war game. Also assuming the specific characteristics of one set of fans the actions of a true fan while ignoring other behaviors sounds like a typical "no true Scotsman" argument. Surely it's not too difficult to think that a "true fan" could go against an unnecessary change to the story they adore so much. They honestly might have gotten far less backlash if they just released the Codex with the changes in it without it being leaked. I don't know, the whole thing has got me confused and I honestly don't really have a horse in this race. I'm more of an Ork/ skirmish game enjoyer (bring back GorkaMorka you joyless corporate twats! Its interesting to me that all this energy is spent on denying and retconning, when they could have simply created a whole new faction. Like the Kreig and Vostroyans, fan made factions, that were built up and made popular by fans. But this all falls apart when you examine what would actually do more for the game as a whole with regards to inclusion. Like making the price of entry much, much lower. This is a small change for a niche and very secretive faction but it is the way that they went about that is the problem, saying that it always has been is lazy. For me personally I find it pointless to have female Custodes/Astartes, it would not only fit poorly with the lore, not only would it not be something that fans want but it really sounds like it is just there to pander to the muscle mommy fetishists, and at that absurd level of sci-fi testosterone poisoning there would be nothing feminine left in the person turned Custodes/Astartes.

Actually its generally the older fans that get more upset, just to clarify, I bought the original Space Marine boxed set, the ones with the pointy noses back in the early 80's. And I can say, this is not going to blow over easily. Flipping off GW and going 3d printed has never been easier.
Back in the 80's GW wanted to make female versions of most things but they had to stop because they weren't selling. If the market was there they would have made some of the marines in the original box set female. For some reason they managed to add female sculpts to the original eldar guardian kit, I guess there was enough of a market for female models at that time to justify it, that or knife ear collectors aren't as averse to female sculpts. They probably are adding more female versions now to attract new customers, but they are also probably reacting to a demand that is already there for female sculpts.

The problem is not what has happened, it's how and why. I don't think anyone who has an issue with this change is ignorant of GW's penchant for retconning the lore, heck they retconned the entire Indomitus Crusade and reprinted The Dark Imperium and Plague War to reflect that change. The problem is first and foremost that this change does not feel like it has any other purpose than pushing political messaging and appealing to a DEI agenda, I don't necessarily believe the 4chan leaks about the Amazon show but I don't think it's remotely a coincidence that this change follows a partnership with a very DEI focused company like Amazon (see Rings of Power). Although I'm sure there are a few, the majority of people who dislike this change probably don't have an issue with female representation or even female super-soldiers, there are female Spartans in Halo and nobody seems to have an issue with that. It's that there does not seem to be any other reason than lazy politics for this change to have been made, there are no new products being sold, it's not a character central to some book or major storyline, it feels like another empty check box measure. Which brings us to the second issue, the how. It's one thing if (like with Stormcast Eternals) this change was launched with new models and a furtherance of the story, but a blurb in a codex just screams lazy. The twitter/x post only worsened the issue by yes gaslighting the fans, it's a tweet not a lore dump, obviously we have thirty years of lore showing no female custodians, to pretend it's always been the case is just dumb. If the account had come out and said: "yes this is a retcon, the company wishes to improve diversity and inclusion in the universe," then at least that would have been honest and up front, instead a lot of people feel belittled and talked down to by that post. That this has blown up so much is somewhat surprising to me but this does seem to have become the latest front-line in the ongoing culture war. As someone who grew up with plenty of fictional stories, books, comics and movies, showing strong female characters and characters of different races and backgrounds I have no problem with inclusion in any franchise that I am a fan of, however it is still important for characters to be well written. Audiences want well written characters who happen to be diverse, not diverse characters who have literally nothing going on under the hood. Over the last ten years I've watched nearly every franchise and story I loved growing up taken over and ruined by creatively bankrupt hacks who couldn't write a decent character or story if their lives depended on it. Star Wars, Star Trek, Terminator, Aliens, Ghostbusters, He-Man, TMNT, Avatar TLAB, Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Willow, DC, Marvel, Halo and so many more. For years it has felt like the dystopian nightmare of Warhammer 40,000 was one of the only impenetrable bastions of fun and camp. It is very tiresome to be constantly lectured to by my entertainment and for a time 40k served as a nice escape from the constant politicization and hectoring. But like the pebble that starts a land-slide once the woke gets an inch it takes a mile and I think a lot of the critics of this change don't just see this as a Custodes issue but an act of bending the knee to political ideologues who will render 40k unrecognizable before they are done. Also personally I dislike this change on its own completely removed from any other issue because it feels like it makes the Sisters of Silence obsolete and redundant, they no longer serve as the esoteric feminine counter-part to the imposing and hyper-masculine Custodes but now exist as an unnecessary and superfluous artifact. Considering GW has given the SoS far less support than the Custodes and has consistently seemed to struggle to find a place for them in the Talons of the Emperor faction on the tabletop this feels like another nail in the SoS coffin.
If anyone is planning on jumping ship to Battletech over this, as a longtime Battletech player I would highly recommend starting with a little bit of the fiction, especially the book “Fox Tales: The Collected Fox Patrol Stories” by Bryan Young.
Games Workshop doesn't seem to appreciate how fast life can come at you, especially when people have been simmering for a long time. When marriages break down into one last blowout that culminates in divorce, half the time it's over a toothpaste cap left off or a single stray remark, not the real issues that chipped away at the couple for years leading up to it. GW has been chiseling away at their fans for years with unwanted rule changes, extortionate pricing, pushy sales staff, etc. People are *ready* to pop off, and this may be as good a reason as any.

Aight where as I do very much agree with most of this video, specifically saying "Lore fans aren't real fans" is kinda asinine. Like, yes GW is a model company first and foremost, yes the real meat of the setting is the game. To say that you're a casual fan because you care about the lore though? That's a bit much.
At 8:40 I mention that "people who talk about the sanctitiy of the lore are casual fans" [sic] This is in reference to the recent deluge of content creators that have jumped on top of the whole female Custodes - many of them having no previous relationship with warhammer, no idea about the lore, but still using the "sanctity of the lore" as a bludgeon to complain about Games Workshop when if they were actual fans of the franchise and had been following it for a while, they'd know that retcons are very common place in Warhammer and that the lore often changes. This isn't about people who are just into Warhammer lore and reading the books etc. Obviously you can be a fan of warhammer that only engages with it via reading the books and following the lore. I know there's plenty of people out there who do so - many because the miniatures are so expensive, and I often argue on this channel that price keeps a lot of fans out of trying the wargame (and this is a major problem actually).
That all said, the actual meat of Warhammer has always been the war game and the miniatures at the heart of it.

Making Custodes female seems to me to be pretty innocuous. I don’t think it will really change much at all nor come into play outside of getting new female Custodes models which sounds cool.

There's a few reasons why the fans are mad. And no, it's not because they hate women. We now know that this change is connected to the upcoming show. Though Henry Cavil is at the helm of creative direction, the main entities are Games Workshop and Amazon Studios. Amazon does not feel like they can achieve success from a show character belonging to the Sisters of Silence. Hence, the name, they dont talk much. The sisters of battle are "too religious" and they believe that will also turn off viewers(all 10 of them that give a crap!). They've debated using a female inquisitor, but similar issues arose. This is where randomly adding a female custodes or two has come it. Either directly or indirectly requested by amazon, they ultimately required a suitable female lead character. Thus Games Workshop gave them a couple. The outrage comes from further broken trust and we thus start down a path that end badly. Financially speaking of course.

My theory is that if tensions are present in GW and this tv project, then there will be a compromise. Perhaps there weren’t always female custodies, but these are totally new creations. That’s not going to make everyone happy, but I know it’s more amiable than what the tweet suggested. Nothing from the 10th edition codex leak seems to suggest these females were there from start. Just that they exist currently.

I started with lore before I bought models. While I don’t play anymore I still spend money on the lore. To dismiss it or belittle the lore fans is just idiotic. The products support each other.
I mean I lapsed playing table top longer than many fans, including this uploader have been into the hobby. Started back when your pocket money would buy you a diecast model blister or box of plastic at the local hobby shop or GW store, my life moved on from being able to play and then when I could GW went insane with the prices and I would still have to travel to find somewhere to play so I read books and play video games. I have early to mid 90s models for 40k and Epic 40k floating around in my horde of junk I filled my home with over the years, but because its been more than 25 years since I rolled a dice apparently I don't matter.

You can be into the warhammer franchise via lore, sure, but the actual meat of Warhammer has always been the war game. The focus on lore from the fanbase emerged in the last decade and a half.

Either through their novels (ie LORE), or their video games, even going so far as to buy my kids starter armies. But by your definition, I'm not a real fan because i don't play with my plastic anymore. Bunch of BS.

The funny part to me is that people who just shrug their shoulders at this change have told me that female Space Marines would be the red line for them. Yes yes there are female Space Marines in Rogue Trader but I would say 80% of fans don't even remember that. Discourse, it isn't specifically the change. It is much much bigger than the change. It is part of a trend that has affected EVERY fandom. Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Dune, Terminator, Aliens, Predator, hell, nearly every fandom has been changed to be more "inclusive". All for the worse. Warhammer doesn't need added diversity, it literally covers the gambit on diversity. Adding a female custodes does not improve inclusivity to the hobby. But GWs response to people who questioned it has definitely damaged inclusivity.
The gatekeepers are on high alert, because they have seen what happened in the other fandoms. Where the actual fans were castigated as bigots and run out of their fandom so the inclusivity could commence. The fans are right to be angry. This isn't like a usual GW retcon. This is getting on the pander train.

Retcons do happen. For instance, originally, the two missing primarchs were intended to be open slots so fans could make their own chapters and lore that didn't rely on other chapters history. Originally, Chaos was split into Chaos and Renegades. Huron Blackheart wasn't a possessed monster, he was a captain that rebelled and took his company with him. Necrons were mere raiders that could just show up during a battle. Hit and run. Squats? Genestealer Cults? Looted tanks? Yeah, I'm familiar with retcons. This is not a normal retcon.

I have to disagree about your views on lore. Lore is the only reason I got into 40k. Dont get me wrong I enjoy the game but there are a lot of (usually cheaper) games out there. The reason I chose 40k over them was purely because of the lore.

And a lot back when I started playing could be played on smaller tables as well instead of the massive tables 40k uses. So if I just wanted to "bash toys together" they would have been better options. But 40k had the best story for the armies and models an interesting living world for those armies. So I went with 40k.

Without lore, those figurines would lose 90% of the price that people would be willing to pay for them. Not to mention books and game licenses. This is also not a small "pocket money" for GW, and without the lore it would have nothing from them. For example, in my country Warhammer books were officially sold almost a decade before the figures were officially sold here.

@@Tsunamiieh why not, I play through all the dawn of war games series (expect for 3), played space marine from THQ, regularly read up on the lore often, have a favorite legion (Alpha legion), engage with memes and fan projects like text to speech, had interest in playing imperial guardsmen army (respect the hell of those guys and love playing them in dawn of war) and keep an eye on the property from time to time.
I may not be the biggest fan but I still have an interest in the property. Buying the minis and learning to paint them isn’t all that much of a step for me. The female custodes just kicked my interest a lot more simply because it made me think of the ip more and of how it actually enhances the setting for me more. It reinforces my fondness for emperor despite his flaws.

There are other alternatives but they require more assumptions: sabotage, incompetence, narcissistic self insert, even investor appeasement is still the investor's ideology. I suppose there's simply the delusion that a short story in a codex would be enough to bring more women and new customers into the hobby...than would leave because of it.

I've said it before but the whole fem-custodies really does feel like GW pissed on a bunch of people and told them it was raining and a bunch of feminist types came out laughing at everybody who was pissed off thinking they won something. But it was a literal tweet. that was it as far as I know there's nothing about it in lore and I haven't seen any models for them. so what is the actual point of this entire controversy other than to piss off a certain group of customer.

Every army in 40k except for Space Marine variants (and genderless aliens like Orks or Tyranids) has female models. People who push for female Space Marines are inherently disignenuous. And it probably would have gone over better if GW admitted this was a change instead of pretending it was always the case.
The real question is "why even change it"? What's the benefit? What was the harm? If it was supposed to make the hobby more popular to women, then it will fail, because it's not popular for most PEOPLE on the WHOLE.

These changes are not due to representation, it is about enforcing ones ideology in a new space. How on earth does 40k not have enough representation? I personally think it's just because it was arguably an unnecessary change in lore, the idea was introduced to millions as a single sentence tweet which made it seem like GW were gaslighting the fanbase and with journalists calling people bigots for being confused about the change is surely making people dig their heels in further. To a lot of people it's probably like if Paramount tweeted "Captain Kirk was always a woman".
As you pointed out it's also not a change about female representation as there are women everywhere else throughout the Imperium from the lowly criminal House Esher gangers in the underhive of Necromunda to the High Inquisitors with the authority to issue Exterminatus on entire planets, on top of two entirely female factions. So why is it so important to change Custodes to a mixed faction, especially considering there doesn't seem to be any female models to sell?
As you said at 6:11 "Games Workshop try not to depict anything in the Warhammer 40K lore that doesn't have a miniature that can't be bought", so unless they have female miniatures in the works for the release of the new Codex, doesn't it make it even more strange that they would make this change? Although I suppose we'll have to wait and see for that, however it again seems strange to leak the details without confirming that there will be miniatures as well.
It might also have something to do with the Amazon 40K series in development being produced by Henry Cavill (whose been put on record as saying that the Custodes are his favorite faction), I've heard rumors that the change might be in order to hit the series DEI target because the Amazon show-runners weren't happy with any of the existing possibilities for female representation so they might have forced GW to make this lore change which is why the messaging around this has been so flippant. I hasten to add that this is all speculation with no solid evidence one way or the other.
One last thing, I also have to disagree with you on the lore mainly being secondary to the actual meat of the war game and miniatures, considering, in the 40K universe alone, there's over 450 novels, video games, comics, animations on their streaming platform on top of the Codexes, that's far more than "just a bit off fluff". The vast majority of lore fans whom enjoy the lore for the lore and most probably don't even care about the war game. Also assuming the specific characteristics of one set of fans the actions of a true fan while ignoring other behaviors sounds like a typical "no true Scotsman" argument. Surely it's not too difficult to think that a "true fan" could go against an unnecessary change to the story they adore so much.
They honestly might have gotten far less backlash if they just released the Codex with the changes in it without it being leaked.

This is a small change for a niche and very secretive faction but it is the way that they went about that is the problem, saying that it always has been is lazy.
For me personally I find it pointless to have female Custodes/Astartes, it would not only fit poorly with the lore, not only would it not be something that fans want but it really sounds like it is just there to pander to the muscle mommy fetishists, and at that absurd level of sci-fi testosterone poisoning there would be nothing feminine left in the person turned Custodes/Astartes.

Actually its generally the older fans that get more upset, just to clarify, I bought the original Space Marine boxed set, the ones with the pointy noses back in the early 80's. And I can say, this is not going to blow over easily. Flipping off GW and going 3d printed has never been easier.
Back in the 80's GW wanted to make female versions of most things but they had to stop because they weren't selling. If the market was there they would have made some of the marines in the original box set female.
For some reason they managed to add female sculpts to the original eldar guardian kit, I guess there was enough of a market for female models at that time to justify it, that or knife ear collectors aren't as averse to female sculpts.
They probably are adding more female versions now to attract new customers, but they are also probably reacting to a demand that is already there for female sculpts.

I'm an older fan and I think this hysteria is nonsensical, especially considering that people who are blindly loyal in the face of things that actually ruin the game for people like whole armies disappearing, armies being rewritten so that your lovingly collected armies are now useless (which of my first edition Squat, IG or Space Marine armies could field in 10th? Or 4th for that matter) or the endless awful rule changes are yelling that THIS is the hill they'll die on.

The problem is not what has happened, it's how and why. I don't think anyone who has an issue with this change is ignorant of GW's penchant for retconning the lore, heck they retconned the entire Indomitus Crusade and reprinted The Dark Imperium and Plague War to reflect that change. The problem is first and foremost that this change does not feel like it has any other purpose than pushing political messaging and appealing to a DEI agenda, I don't necessarily believe the 4chan leaks about the Amazon show but I don't think it's remotely a coincidence that this change follows a partnership with a very DEI focused company like Amazon (see Rings of Power). Although I'm sure there are a few, the majority of people who dislike this change probably don't have an issue with female representation or even female super-soldiers, there are female Spartans in Halo and nobody seems to have an issue with that. It's that there does not seem to be any other reason than lazy politics for this change to have been made, there are no new products being sold, it's not a character central to some book or major storyline, it feels like another empty check box measure. Which brings us to the second issue, the how. It's one thing if (like with Stormcast Eternals) this change was launched with new models and a furtherance of the story, but a blurb in a codex just screams lazy. The twitter/x post only worsened the issue by yes gaslighting the fans, it's a tweet not a lore dump, obviously we have thirty years of lore showing no female custodians, to pretend it's always been the case is just dumb. If the account had come out and said: "yes this is a retcon, the company wishes to improve diversity and inclusion in the universe," then at least that would have been honest and up front, instead a lot of people feel belittled and talked down to by that post.
That this has blown up so much is somewhat surprising to me but this does seem to have become the latest front-line in the ongoing culture war. As someone who grew up with plenty of fictional stories, books, comics and movies, showing strong female characters and characters of different races and backgrounds I have no problem with inclusion in any franchise that I am a fan of, however it is still important for characters to be well written. Audiences want well written characters who happen to be diverse, not diverse characters who have literally nothing going on under the hood. Over the last ten years I've watched nearly every franchise and story I loved growing up taken over and ruined by creatively bankrupt hacks who couldn't write a decent character or story if their lives depended on it. Star Wars, Star Trek, Terminator, Aliens, Ghostbusters, He-Man, TMNT, Avatar TLAB, Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Willow, DC, Marvel, Halo and so many more. For years it has felt like the dystopian nightmare of Warhammer 40,000 was one of the only impenetrable bastions of fun and camp. It is very tiresome to be constantly lectured to by my entertainment and for a time 40k served as a nice escape from the constant politicization and hectoring. But like the pebble that starts a land-slide once the woke gets an inch it takes a mile and I think a lot of the critics of this change don't just see this as a Custodes issue but an act of bending the knee to political ideologues who will render 40k unrecognizable before they are done.
Also personally I dislike this change on its own completely removed from any other issue because it feels like it makes the Sisters of Silence obsolete and redundant, they no longer serve as the esoteric feminine counter-part to the imposing and hyper-masculine Custodes but now exist as an unnecessary and superfluous artifact. Considering GW has given the SoS far less support than the Custodes and has consistently seemed to struggle to find a place for them in the Talons of the Emperor faction on the tabletop this feels like another nail in the SoS coffin.

If anyone is planning on jumping ship to Battletech over this, as a longtime Battletech player I would highly recommend starting with a little bit of the fiction, especially the book “Fox Tales: The Collected Fox Patrol Stories” by Bryan Young.
Games Workshop doesn't seem to appreciate how fast life can come at you, especially when people have been simmering for a long time.
When marriages break down into one last blowout that culminates in divorce, half the time it's over a toothpaste cap left off or a single stray remark, not the real issues that chipped away at the couple for years leading up to it.
GW has been chiseling away at their fans for years with unwanted rule changes, extortionate pricing, pushy sales staff, etc. People are *ready* to pop off, and this may be as good a reason as any.

They are mad about GW bending the knee to the woke tourists who don't give a shit about 40K, they just want their ideology injected into the game.
But there was no change in ideology. Warhammer was always a mockery of the far right, not a celebration of it. And as right wingers get dumber, the mockery has to get blunter to achieve the same effect.

I get the impression that this controversy blew up more than others because, well... can you imagine the daily mail writing an article going "warhammer inflates the number of fictional supersoldiers in its setting by adding primaris!"? Literally all of the bigger, more important controversies have been about things so nerdy that the average person would need a crash course on 40k to even understand the problem. I don't like this change, the same as i haven't liked many before... i just wish all the others could have had this scale of backlash. might stop GW from doing things like this so often.

1) its not that they are mad at the fact of adding women in the custodies, its how they did it, the execution was bad really bad and insulted the core player base, lets be honest are more autistic than some 4chan users that put thousand of pounds in the toys, I only played the video games as we don't have the toys in my country, but i still love the lore.
2) it is showing symptoms of wokenes and people on the internet have seen others Ip's turning to shit (Star wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Lord of the ring, The Witcher, Marvel, Dc etc) they see the small signs that would lead to the franchise turning to shit.

Aight where as I do very much agree with most of this video, specifically saying "Lore fans aren't real fans" is kinda asinine. Like, yes GW is a model company first and foremost, yes the real meat of the setting is the game. To say that you're a casual fan because you care about the lore though? That's a bit much.
