Listen I work in sales (and wish I didn't) and it's awful these expectations. A low rate example: You can make $10 comfortable, so they target you at $20. You somehow make it, so the next year they target you at $40 even though you cannot feasible meet this target. You may come close, but you will be disparaged for not exceeding expectations. Truly awful. Customers want what they want. Exhausting.

I avoid jobs like that like they're the plague. Had bad bosses a few times and have quit on the spot once and twice been fired because I cannot tolerate people being unreasonable or putting unreasonable expectations on me. I just can't do it. I've tried but the rage gets too much.
A flip in me switches and I go into zero tolerance war mode.
Luckily my current job in software dev allows me a lot of autonomy and the one time I had to deal with a bad boss resulted in us both apologising to each other and him agreeing to leave me be.
Bosses putting an expectation like that on me will suffer for it before I'm out of their hair

The poors who can't afford don't matter. GW survives on a steady stream of kids who pressure their parents into buying the new meta. Then they try to resell those unheated models as high as possible, which further insulates the retail price.
All of us who've been in this hobby more than 10 years are also to blame. We didn't push hobbying over legal models. We bought the new meta over and over. We didn't help kids start cheaply in local stores.
We let GW kill local stores and replace them with shitty corp locations.

As someone who had GW Stock and pulled out (while ago) here is why: It wasn’t that they weren’t hitting their $ marks. It was that every time they put out a product, it sold out in a matter of minutes, meaning the demand was there, but not the availability to keep making money.

Stock prices don’t affect the company unless they are putting shares out for sale. They got their money in earlier public offerings. That’s basic capitalization or recapitalization.
I follow a long-term strategy in investing, counting on the dividends to make money instead of the quick turn-around of the day traders. What I do affects the company, because when the prices drop, I buy more shares to increase my dividends and the value of my proxy votes.
I don’t recall if I have any shares in GW anymore. I know I bought a few, but I would have to check to see if I still have them.

its funny how the moment an entertainment company becomes more corporatised, the more they are incentivised to establish their products as "brands". GW is a good example as they make out the "warhammer hobby" is only exclusive to them and not a part of the wargaming hobby. Another is FIFA and Call of Duty; not being a "sports game" and "FPS game" respectively, but brands in their own right as this creates a monopoly of those brands; which once established incentivise the companies that own said brands to drain as much money as possible from as many fans as possible while trying to keep them invested in the hobby/game/brand as much as possible.

I see this regularly in the retail company, that I work for. The guys at the top think that profits from last year are a good way to predict what the future profits should be this year, and so on, therefor they can set targets, and expect to make a profit twice, or three times what it was the year before. They then get super pissy when the targets/profits are not achieved, "IT'S THE WORKERS FAULT, SACK MORE!" If they would pull their head out of their ass, they would realize that you cannot predict shopping habits, and you cannot garrentee profits, people change their habits on a whim, and you can't promise a set profit, if people are not buying your goods or services, you can't ever predict how many customers you are going to have, because people do not conform to spreadsheets, they have this thing called free will, they do not owe you money, and they will shop elsewhere if you upset them, kind of how like Games Workshop upset their customers.

One thing to point out about the share prices, the current price low isn't the only price dip we've seen this year. We saw dips in March, June and October, with March being the worst low of the year (£8,515 in March vs £9125 this week). Personally I wouldn't worry about this small dip, it's within acceptable price changes plus it's within GW's own expectations. I wouldn't be surprised if the price drop leads to further shares being purchased, whilst the prices are low.

They expected a higher RoI, so they’re getting out. Now is the time for fans to buy in if they can.
Company profits don’t actually affect the stock price. Higher dividends will discourage divestment, which can keep the prices high, but they the price per share is dependent on the demand for the shares being sold. If there are 10,000 shares being sold and demand for 100,000 shares in buy orders, the stock prices go up. If there are 100,000 shares being sold and only a demand for 10,000 shares, the price will go down.
Stock prices are massively confusing, because people will buy shares to resell for profit, rather than hold for dividends. Unless GW is issuing a new public offering or selling shares it didn’t sell in previous issuances, the stock prices are not an indicator of their business health.
A hearty “thank you” to FASA for teaching me how this all works in the Shadowrun book Corporate Shadowfiles. It has made me a lot of money over the last couple decades.

This Amazon rumor sounds suspiciously close to the rumors around the Damnatus fan movie in the early 2000s.
SGerman 40K fans had been making a full live action fan movie and wanted to offer it for free online.
Rumor has been, that due to a clause in german copyright law it would have extended all the rights to the IP (including sublicensing) to the makers of fan project, if GW allowed them to publish the movie.
So the fan team could offer and sell the rights to erveryone they wanted, if GW wouldn't take legal action against the project (in German business law not acting against something a company is aware of, counts a agreeing with it).

GW will likely never rerelease that game because it undercuts themselves. When V4 came out, the secondary market was flooded with cardboard because 40k players were buying the game for the models which were cheaper than buying the regular minis. The only way they would rerelease it is at a substantial price increase that wouldn't kneecap their existing model range, or just release it like the recent Warhammer Quest expansion where you only get the cardboard parts and have to get the minis from their existing range.

  • @Xagroth
    @Xagroth 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Regarding that third crazy possibility based on a rumor... I can believe it happened, frankly, BUT it's also extremely likely the guy had overextended his signing authority (usually, a company has a certain number of people with authotization to sign specific types of contracts, in this case I'd think they guy was authorized to sign only media rights of use, that is, allowing third parties to use the IP for a specific production, with a pre-redacted contract to which they would add the specific project). Now, normally both legal teams speak together after the salespersons from both sides had decided on rough ideas, legal makes several drafts, those go to the risk department (which would look only to the numbers parts, not to the legalese wording, that being part of the Legal team!) then gets signed, and both legal teams review that the signatories do have authority to approve the contract (thanks to official documents listing what can sign that person). So yeah, several departments do look it over their specific parts... but as the Old Philosopher sayeth... "that's not my frigging job" regarding all the others!

Expectations become benchmarks and minimal thresholds for future operating periods, this is basic stuff that has gone on for centuries.
All the other stuff like stock issues, new product lines having a rough time of it after initial launch and even outclassing segments of the community with price hike after hike aren't even on the radar for these types of folks. They do not care nor will they ever even do a deep dive into the inner workings of either GW or the hobby.
It's all about their return on investment, the rest is just noise........they don't care and will take their (well generally not actual their) money to the next cashcow that outperforms expectations for a few fiscal quarters while avoiding taxes as much as they can. Its rare for me to even go visit my gaming store anymore cause it costs me 25 bucks just in gas to get there and back home where as few years ago i was there every weekend playing. 1. Investors having unrealistic expectations seems plausible to a point but not too much.
    2. Age of Sigmar is very difficult as a setting to translate into a good videogame or even a good RPG. There’s a reason most GW fantasy video games or ROGs are still WHFB. AoS was born out of the perceived need to defend their IP (so elves became Aelves, and demons became daemons…). The game has stunning centerpiece models for sure but it also generated a lot of ill will and the whole over the top “space marines in fantasy” setting is not what a lot of fans wanted. We’ll see how the Okd World does (given at least a modicum of support from GW).
    3. Unless the guy who negotiated the deal was paid by Bezos I can’t see that story being true. I love Rob and he certainly knows people in Nottingham but I think it’s more likely Amazon just decided a 40K series was too risky and costly, especially after the LotR debacle.

Sales appeared to be beating company expectations earlier in the year. Investor expectations became higher than the expectations of the company so investors bought more shares raising the price. Sales slowed and investor expectations were not met, only the initial company expectations. Investors sold shares based on their expectations not being met thus tanking the price.
This is not that difficult to understand.

    Well said.
The investors do not really care about the company they are investing in, the just want to see more and more money.
If you are "honest" in your forecasts as a public company, you get punished at the next shareholder meeting, as you did not exeed expectations.
So it is better to lie and set lower forecasts, which has the other downisde that the stock might tank after the forecast.
    Whatever you do,you are doomed.
This happens regularly to many companies, especially if their stockprice is already inflated as is the case in GW:
As you can see it is most of the time only a short time drop, and the price gets back to its pre anouncement price.

I am an actual GW stock holder so I read the report. Part of the disappointment was from a decrease in revenue from licensing which feel from 14 million to 12 million from the previous quarter. The delay of space marine 2 also did not help. GW also gave a bonus of 1.5k sterling to each and every employee as a xmas bonus. Investors also did not like this as they thought those should have been given as dividends to stock holders.

Im a player of 20ish years and in America (were they give a artificial 15% to 25% markup) and I remember that even though they didn't update models often the models were 25 to 35 usd for heros, 35 to 45 usd for infantry squads, and about 60 usd for a tank. I believe that the main rules were always 80 usd, and codexs were always 40 usd. The paints and brushes I belive went up a few usd since my childhood.

My plan is to wait for the stock to rise again after 11th edition and then sell it off. If there is another dip later that year I might repeat that attempt but generally I find double down on stock dips multiple times to be a bad idea.

The best part about GW raising prices is that it actually translates to less sales, and less revenue. Lower prices(to a point, obviously), will have a positive effect on sales, and thus, equate to larger revenue.
So, instead of taking some of my money because I want to buy a new army, they get none of my money because I refuse to buy their overpriced shit. I would rather 3D print my new army because I can find any number of sweet models from other companies. Oh well.
