I love the tech errors. Its kinda like a running bit to me. Some are more egregious than others, but honestly very impressive how you can work around them! I learn about solving my own problems from your examples! Thanks Rob. Keep up the good work!
I got a real good laugh every time the Louise shrugging with "Rob Juggzed it up" slides appeared the other week. I'm glad you are all able to take the little hiccups in stride.
I Wrote my dissertation on ludonarrative dissonance and it's impact on single player narrative driven games and hearing that phrase again triggered me like a sleeper agent 😂
Rob you should absolutely not feel ashamed for using the term ludonarrative dissonance. It's a well established term, especially in the video game sphere, and it got a smile out of me hearing you say it.
I love that Rob says he is afraid of being caught by the heritage foundation for robbing burial sites, and not falling victim to an ancient curse or being haunted by the dead. Thats what I'd be watching out for Louise!
GW interview circa 2000 is still a tale I tell people cos it was so strange. 12 people herded into a back door of GW HQ with barely a word said. Then to warm up we did a 'just for fun' quiz on warhammer, and general history. This fun quiz eliminated 6 of the group who were escorted through a door and never seen again. The painting round saw 3 more eliminated after a cursory look at a unit we'd painted. The remaining 3 of us each did a presentation and were all told we'd failed and ushered out of the building. No proper interview, no feedback, no excitement of being in our hobby dream place. TBH after hearing the salary for being a retail manager I felt like maybe I'd dodged a very low paying bullet...
So much love for Osprey books, all my silly converted armies required one! Samurai Tombkings? Osprey Elite early samurai! Cat Beastmen from the dark continent of Indh? Osprey Medieval indian armies! Underappreciated aspect of this hobby, you can, like Peachy, find a creator of something miniature-related that you like, get talking to them and they turn out to be a super cool and friendly person. Very few hobbies out there that you can almost 100% guarantee any individual will be cool.

The number of times Joseph started a sentence and then got derailed by a tangent was noticeable. 2.) Some prep work / research prior to the interview goes a long way. Sean Evans from Hot Ones is a quintessential example of this. Thank you all for making this interview happen!
I can totally relate to Joseph’s story, except when I hit the decision point I became a teacher and a writer on the side while he moved to the UK and made the dream happen. What a legend.
It's interesting to hear Joseph's take on the Rings trilogy, since I've watched it that way in a cinema. Back when RotK released, our local Imax aired the extended editions of FotR and TTT back-to-back (with about 45 mins between) then followed them with the midnight premiere of RotK. It was a truly epic movie-going experience.
Wow, we went to the same college! He would've been a couple of years ahead of me but we may have actually crossed paths at some point. When he mentioned the game store in a basement I was like "Wait a minute" and did some snooping and I TOTALLY went to that same store! He has a picture on his blog from 97 or 98 and I would've been a Freshman or Sophomore! I remember going in and asking if anyone played Warhammer and being SOUNDLY REBUFFED and told that no, everyone had quit because Games Workshop was terrible and was trying to squeeze out small gaming stores. XD
Joseph did tell me I shouldn't do something. Within a ridiculously short time, he gave a detailed description of why the faster character that could interact with objectives was a bad idea. The Frostgrave and Stargrave Facebook groups are the only reason I still have an account there.
Rob and Louise really need to look at Malifaux. Rob because no game does a better job at expressing ideas about the characters through rules. And Louise because there's an entire faction of Gremlins with pigs.
When Age of Sigmar came out I liked just how open and loose the lore felt at the time. It opened up that creativity of, "Hey, I know the names are changing and all, but aelves and duardin and humans are all together now! There's so much possibility here!" And then the Stormcast, to my recollection, were just "heroic souls" being forged into a new shape. Which to me said ANY heroic soul, the aelf who was about to be devoured by a slaaneshi daemon gets zapped to Sigmars side, the duardin cracking skulls as his position is overrun, the human sucking in all the magic about to blast his own skull apart to defend his tribal village...all of them could be Stormcast. So I started collecting bits to make a duardin Stormcast force. We hadn't heard anything much about Grungni other than he helped create the Stormcaat and then he disappeared to find his people out in the realms. And them they started to write more stuff and setting boundaries and not embracing the potentially wild combinations. Stormcast are very heavily coded as human heroes. The duardin are either naked Slayers (with like 2 models and a giant dragon) or Sky Pirates. At least it felt like Cities of Sigmar would initially let you be a combined force, but even that kind feels like it's being pulled away.
I absolutely agree on Joseph's take on Prometheus. I had to go to the pub and talk it out afterwards. I was constantly rewriting the script as I saw the movie which seems to have been written by three drunk high-schoolers that didn't talk to each other and think they know schi-fi after seeing one crappy 90s SciFi series each, and not the same one.
Great fun interview, really keen to get Frostgrave happening in my hobby rotation, serious hard to find the books in Australia, they are on Amazon but as a retailer myself I always try to find a store.. the hunt continues.

However, similar to Krzysztopherson - give it a bit more structure. For example, around 1:30:00, Rob suddenly goes off to tell Joe his entire life of what he is doing - to what end exactly? It looks as if Joe pretty much is out of it from then on. All a bit random, and that is a bit sad, but I am certain that you'll get into it Keep it up and all the best
I think ludonarrative dissonance was a term coined by a writer to describe his experience in the original Bioshock game. I think it’s a really useful term, but it is crazy sounding, and it always throws people for a loop if they haven’t heard it before.
Joseph, Vince Venturella and Uncle Atom should do a collaboration and call it Death Station 2, hehe. Great conversation, I'm really getting into Rangers of Shadow Deep at the moment, it's a great feeling when a ruleset really motivates creativity!
There's a Doctor Who story - Patrick Troughton's final story - called 'The War Games', which has soldiers pulled from various periods in Earth's history fighting in different war zones in order for a bunch of aliens to build a fantastic army of their own. Which sounds like something Joseph might find interesting.
Archaeologist here, I've done a little flintknapping in my time Louise, be prepared to break hundreds of pounds of stone! Ive done a few chips of flint and obsidian on models before, i keep meaning to go back and paint a savage orc and give him a real stone tool 😂
I always proxy models for ones I prefer, which is usually always undead regardless of what the skirmish wargame dictates I use. I see tables and stat lines as archetypes for a specific role/class in the warband.
Another great episode, I don't know why (maybe he is from the same area of the US) but there is a twang to Joseph's voice and I kept hearing the 'nam' teacher from Back to School.

I did an interview at the Derby store years ago and it was a group interview, with tasks etc. I have a feeling it may have been the interview that Duncan was hired. I remember we had to bring some painted minis and I hadn't completely unpacked having recently moved to Derby. The only stuff I has available was 95th rifles which were converted to Sharpe's Rifles. To Suggs if you want a course on Flint Knapping look for one taught by Chris Lord, son of the late John Lord. Chris and his dad are probably the leading experts in the UK.
I like the idea of the Rascal town sculpter maybe designing an enemy/competitors to the goblins. Could be insects in a cartoon style or maybe some sort of gnomes. Just a thought.

I like Joseph's take on victory conditions... meh... he was thinking about a game he wants to play, not a game that he wants to be over. I think progression and development are the important things. I whole hearted agree with Joe's philosophy when it comes to wargames. I think a lot more gamers would be having a lot more fun if they were less stringent about the rules, or even the themes, as written mentality. Also the simple yet profound thought of "write the ruleset you want to play" is something I think all hobbyists should try. It is a very rewarding experience and it gives you a reason to play and experiment with more games because the more rulesets you read and play the easier it is to get your own ideas in to a playable state. There's a Doctor Who story - Patrick Troughton's final story - called 'The War Games', which has soldiers pulled from various periods in Earth's history fighting in different war zones in order for a bunch of aliens to build a fantastic army of their own. Which sounds like something Joseph might find interesting.
Yes, I remember that episode. There's also a solo wargame called Brutality that explores the concept.

I always proxy models for ones I prefer, which is usually always undead regardless of what the skirmish wargame dictates I use. I see tables and stat lines as archetypes for a specific role/class in the warband.

Another game by Osprey Games, Gamma Wolves, was sort of written to let people use their Gundam models in a wargame.
I did an interview at the Derby store years ago and it was a group interview, with tasks etc. I have a feeling it may have been the interview that Duncan was hired. I remember we had to bring some painted minis and I hadn't completely unpacked having recently moved to Derby. The only stuff I has available was 95th rifles which were converted to Sharpe's Rifles.

I whole hearted agree with Joe's philosophy when it comes to wargames. I think a lot more gamers would be having a lot more fun if they were less stringent about the rules, or even the themes, as written mentality. Also the simple yet profound thought of "write the ruleset you want to play" is something I think all hobbyists should try. It is a very rewarding experience and it gives you a reason to play and experiment with more games because the more rulesets you read and play the easier it is to get your own ideas in to a playable state.
