Great video, very well researched! A prequel seems to be the most likely option, but I definitely wouldn't be opposed to an Eternal sequel with a medieval theme
So idk about you but I think there's good reason that quake never made a full reappearance..... After quake 2.... That game took on a life of it's own as a multiplayer driven 3d arena shooter..... Secondly quake and quake 2 were basically a different themed DnD campaign. For a true 3d space... Doom was demons and 2.5d.... Quake was midevil, quake two was mechanized and industrial..... Also..... Dude..... Go play quake 2 and tell me Vega's graphic for finding the hell priest or secret door or target triggered walls aren't ripped straight from quake 2
Well, guns technically did exist from a long time, maybe not likd rifled and pistoled ones, but it did exist as small cannons, so the double barrel Shotgun actually makes sense, at least we are talking about a world full of demons and magic, so why not?
Good stuff. Only two small things, first the music overcomes the audio in a few places (around the first third i wanna say) but audio is already such a hard thing to get down so its not a big deal. Second thing is even tho you did put a timestamp down i feel you couldve trimmed down or focused a bit more on certain lines of the slayers testaments so i wouldnt have to skip such a big chunk of the video on top of keeping the viewer engaged the entire way through. Usually if you wanna show someone the full thing of smth you should have a good reason or else its gonna come off as padding. Other then that good shit, keep it up
I had a back and forth with myself about the testaments because I wasn't sure if it was smarter to pick and choose or just show all of them. I didn't want any context to be lost so I figured showing all of them would be the best option. That said, I agree with you in retrospect. It does come off as padding and I don't like that. I'll have to do another pass through with the audio because I did it with a headset and without and it sounded good to me but getting a second opinion would be helpful. Appreciate the criticisms though. This is helpful
I was hoping they'd go back to more methodical, horror style like DOOM 3. It's cool that DOOM 2016 and Eternal became arena shooters, but I still think DOOM is best when the horror is ratcheted up, tho DOOM 2016 is one of the greatest FPS of it's era, maybe the best. But I'd like a mastered DOOM 3 style. You could still keep the faster pace but really lean into the horror.
I rather have it slow. But you know, fun. People usually says its the change that made many people disapointed with Doom 3, but for me is just the idea that it didn't go all in into being slower. So things clash in a not good way, for me at least, the darkness and flashlight where not obstacles but rather just a irritating gimmick for example, the backtrack and the fact that maps are mostly linear so it was just, go from point A to B, then back to A with limited stamina. And so on, those things not only made the game very dull but a absolute slog. And all of this while i enjoy survival horrors like classide RE titles.
Doom is a fast action game, always had been always will be. Even Doom 3 still features faster movement than most games now. If the character is genuinely slow, it isn't Doom. Also, Doom INVENTED the deathmatch, Doom should NOT be a purely single player experience, it's a SHAME that id never implemented Deathmatch in Eternal.
@@Wobbothe3rd Doom is very flexible man. Doom is about creating trends, not following then(guess what Doom 3 did), the fast paced gameplay only came in the modern doom games because fps until 2016 where a absolute tragedy of recovery system and "realism". And also, old Doom its not as fast as people think they are.
Maybe I've watched too much original doom speed running but in my mind doom is absolutely frantic and hectic and fast. I like how cracked out and crazy you can play in eternal. I also enjoy doom 3 though so either way is ok with me.
No idea if there is any connection here, but when I first heard about this, for some reason, I thought of the unlockable Slayer skin in Eternal. Think it's called Barbarian, although that looks like something from the BC (Before Christ) era, rather than medieval.
My first time playing through ancient gods the longer rounds and harder hordes, and the optional battles with cosmetic rewards is so fun and i learned alot from this game but anyways, what id could do now is to show a little throw back scenes from the first game to doom 64 until the dark ages which i guess takes place around argent d'nur before he became the slayer, they could make little scenes that showing what happened to the old games and connecting them all to make it more palletable for new players of the series. I also see a comment on this video on why the next game should have some horror flavour, dark ages is the perfect title for that. They should not ignore the gameplay style of eternal but they could change the feels of the next game to match that of doom 2016. Btw this slayers testament is so long im about to finish this nonesense and the testament is still going. But in all honesty since id always seek to improve we can only guess for now, we may not know what kind of athmosphere are we going to be in the next gamw but im pretty sure we are all gonna have funfun fun. Youre not reading this all the way through now way.
Doom does not need remakes. One reason being because the old games have such a grand modding scene, one thing many fans did was "remaking" the old games and it ranges from "well, maybe it just doesn't work" to people overexploring the classic aesthetic in ways that not even 90's id could do. And with D3: It just needs a proper re-release that does what BFG edition and others should've done (Plus, making it adhere to 2016/Eternal like changing its story or art direction feels dumb because it'd both disappoint regular D3 fans and fail at please Doom fans that already dislike D3 to begin with). Doom being a series that went through different iterations (specially without a "universe/lore") means a new game should simply be encouraged. But if id were to make a "retro/boomer shooter" spin-off: At best an opportunity to work with fans and feel like you're "canonizing" concepts seen in fan works. At worst, have to find ways to not screw up both modders and people that play mods to begin with. Doom modding in general has a lot of stuff that feels like "could/would/should have been official" but i guess it's better fanservice than referencing an internet meme like Doot. (specially in a fanbase with its own deep lore and how they affected Doom as a series, from the Doomguy nickname to even how people treat always_run like it's part of vanilla Doom play) I always thought the Night Sentinels as a concept would suit Quake better but the new Doom's also borrow elements from Quake (plus, most people think these games overlap and you can't blame them: a lot of these titles had small settings and were primarly defined by specific gameplay/tech features and innovation). So Doom "eating up" its brother franchises and taking their elements may've been a safer choice. (plus, just in case a Heretic reboot would get hate if it were to get some RPG upgrade system or a modern art direction people would complain about or whether or not a modern version of the Iron Lich wouldn't have its iconic tornado attack etc). At that point, might as well put ports of Quake and Heretic inside a Doom game, like an extension to the D1/2 ports in the Fortress of Doom. Perhaps a worry about Doom taking elements from others is also whether or not they won't consider some Doom elements worth bringing back like the actual flesh tech aesthetic in the originals or whatever. I expect comparisons to the mod GMOTA. I do think melee could be expanded on this time. Also wonder about the demons, like "techless" versions of usually cybernetic demons or those with Bosch inspired designs. Or they get "tech" but it's wood cannons and Da Vinci tech. At least the Sentinels can be expanded in terms of gameplay and themes for their items like their versions of the Plasma Rifle or medikits. Objects with certain themes can sort of "expand" their worlds. part of why some people didn't like the "videogame self aware" direction of Eternal i guess.
@@TheTrveMothlord I always thought a new Quake could get some gameplay ideas from Q2 and others but under a Q1 skin. Quake Champions even has a railgun skin based off that one weapon from the Ranger's player model.
@@TheTrveMothlord There is no "Quake", Quake 1, 2, and 3 are basically totally different games, and Quake 1 is obviously just Doom in 3D. It was actually criticized at the time for how derivative it was.
Honestly I think remakes can work well. All they need to do is what the dead space/RE4 remakes did. Just make the graphics better and expand a little on what the originals did.
@@Ghostman223 Even then, that doesn't have to be a remake. At least a "remaster" or something. And plenty of games getting remade are already modern looking titles. Plus, not only the industry/gaming audiences have an unhealthy obsession with "realistic graphics" (devs being overworked, higher budgets, too much time needed, realism still being boring, not the same as an actual unique or clever art direction, some older semi realistic games already looking better, why yellow paint in some remakes even exists), there's also stuff in older games that feels more impressive like cool portal effects. Seriously, like look at Prey 2006. That alone has more magic than most AAA games trying to look realistic and end up feeling like they're in the same series or engine. Another issue with remakes is if they're trying to memory-hole the original games. I also once wrote what an ideal D3 re-release should be and it boils down to undoing most of what later releases did and doing things like options for things some people didn't like, whether or not you'd prefer the D3 beta sounds or even stuff like model showcases. At least with older games, a remake can be even more different and sometimes port them like Nintendo did with the original Metroid and then Zero Mission. I also think remakes would be better for bad games that had interesting ideas or anyting that clearly comes off as missed potential. RE4 is a game everyone treated highly like it was part of some sort of prophecy or religion.
To me mighty Doom felt like a Doom eternal mobile game because of the similarities with the Doom slayer having the same weapons, battling the same demons and having the same praetor suite.
I think what they’ll end up doing is that they’ll have the slayer use guns and sentinal weaponry (ie the crucible and the hell breaker hammer) but the one thing that will remain the same from Doom Eternal to this game will be the Slayer’s SSG with the meathook attachment in order to some what keep the same combat loop or “fun zone” as Doom Eternal
I’ll be really bloody dissapointed if they not only take Quake but also Heretic/Hexen themes, aesthetic and flavour and put them into Doom in a way which makes those IPS less distinct and special.
There's nothing "distinct" about Quake lol. Quake 1, 2, and 3, might as well be completely different games. Quake 1's design was pure bullshit, just random cool stuff thrown together with no real thought or planning. But I do agree that id software should not just become "The Doom company"
Great video my guy, love your sense of humor as well! Definitely looking forward to whatever iD might be cooking up; I will say though that I think an entirely melee combat focused DOOM game is not entirely off the table. I think there are ways it can be done effectively and honestly, I'd like to see iD Software fully commit to this if I'm being honest. Putting in guns would still be cool and I'd still be fine with it, but I also can't help but feel that it would only be a half step towards what they're supposedly trying to achieve.
