that's genuinely better than the ones we used in school at first that used an older than xp windows installation (timeline was between release of win 7 and 8 but i was too young to remember details)
@@the1990kman Could you possibly do a reupload of this but let e1m1 play out in its entirety for each card? I wanna hear how each card sounds with the second half of the song. also, another request, could you upload a showcase of how they sound playing e1m4 (aka Kitchen Ace)? I would love to see that!
@@ariabritton9669 I wasn't planning making this a series, but after the response of everyone, I might consider doing some other doom music (maybe even e1m4, but not right away). I thought i recorded the entire e1m1 music, but after listening to it again, i did miss one part, so I don't know yet.
As someone who hunted around for a card to do the Doom MIDI (MUS) Soundtrack justice, I do appreciate this video. For what it is worth, I ended up with a Soundblaster 16 for the sound and Reveal WAVExtreme 32 for the MIDI which was decent enough. It took some fun and games with the IRQ settings to get that to work as you can imagine...
I had a disney sound source that plugged into the joystick port. I remember being told that it was basically an external gravis sound system. I played through the Commander Keens, the side scrolling Duke nukems, rockford, some of the kings quests. Then we got a sound blaster, with the cd drive, sound card and speakers so we could play the newer kings quest games, indiana jones and the fate of atlantis, 7th guest, 11th hour, doom, Wolfenstein, etc. I remember thinking going from the Disney to The sound blaster, The sound blaster sounded like real instruments and it blew my mind
This is so epic. Thank you for doing this. I have looked for this for some time now, to try to remember which was the actual sound coming out of my Acer PC back in the day.
0:19 I used to play doom exactly like this and my mom was freaking out because she would say, “what is all that noise!! Turn it off!”. You can imagine the immediate panic I would feel when I would just be trying to play doom, and my mom would yell at every time.

0:23 doom if he saxxy 1:26 doom if he midwest emo 2:28 doom if he rocks harder than usual (seriously this one is even better than the "original") 3:29 doom if he your upstairs neighbor 4:38 doom if he bass'd (those low notes are top-tier, only the high notes kinda ruin it) 5:43 doom if he E1M1 (the original)
the first and last sound the most like the game i played when i was a kid, but its hard to call any the original since they were all available at the same time and anyone could remember any of them as being their og sound.
so cool. makes me wanna take one of these PCs and load em up with newer doom community wads just to hear what modern music (shout-out to all the awesome doom community musicians) sounds like on these old cards
GUS with the extra memory module was always the most evocative and best for this game. I played it for hours on end hooked up to a proper amp and music speaker set back in the day.
Man that soundscape is really something else. I had seen a few videos before but this one seems to showcase it well enough to not use it's emulation for like anything. I usually like trash but it's terrible. Lol
I love how they all sound super goofy except for the Ultrasound and Dreamblaster, I feel bad for anyone who experienced Doom on one of those other sound cards lol
1. Adlib: Basic, the kinda sound I'd hear in the early school PC's in Québec. 2. Soundscape Adlib Simulation: Oh gosh, no... 2.1 Soundscape: 2003-2004 souvenirs galore from the PC I was loaned at school. 3. Awe 32: Sounds like someone choking and coughing. 4. Gravis Ultrasound: I recall having a PC at home that sounded just like that in 2000-2001. 5: Dreamblaster X2CS: Late 2000's PC souvenirs from when I changed home.
The last one actually sounds like real instruments that are trying to recreate the original MIDI and doing an amazing job. Probably my favorite. The first one is nostalgic, second one is terribly off-tune, AWE32 is a disappointment and the GUS, I remember sounding better. Weird.
@@the1990kman I know dude, I was just razzn' ya. :) Thanks for the vid, it's cool to hear the different music types for one of our favorite games. PC's back then were pretty expensive, you only heard what you had.

I happened to own a gravis ultrasound card. It was a really good card, tho how good it sounded depended on the instrument packet you had.

The one my childhood recognises is the Dreamblaster, definitely.

You'd have to ensure that it's vanilla friendly. Dos Doom does not handle pcm music in it's wad file I think.
ofc, modern doom wad makers have a lot of midi bangers
GUS with the extra memory module was always the most evocative and best for this game. I played it for hours on end hooked up to a proper amp and music speaker set back in the day.
The Adlib on ESS Audiodrive made the music sound like it was played through a floppy drive's motor. Sounds cool, but Dreamblaster is the most iconic.

The clarity on the dream blaster. Sometimes i think even on GZdoom the music doesnt sound as good as from actual soundcards.
Yea. That's just amazing. I've only heard that in source ports up until now.
Yes, that's because GZDoom's default soundfont is awful. You have to get a better one to make it sound better.

It's like that on the AWE 32 as well. Sounds like it is being played underwater or something.

The Dreamblaster is the most accurate to the PC version, and the AWE 32 kinda sounds like the SNES.
Awesome!
the Dreamblaster has a nice drum kit.
I hope you post a video showcasing the Soudblaster 16. I had that sound card first and later upgraded to the AWE32 a couple years later.
No, because I don't own a Soundblaster 16. And I don't plan on it.
