    Great vid! I have been using the Moment WIDE and TELE here and there, but then I bought the regulars Anamorphic and have used it for the last year and half and it’s incredible. In fact, I used it to shoot our short film within our film acting class for kids and everyone was very impressed.

    Completely agree with the approach to mastering what you have vs. buying the newest equipment. Sharp and exciting visuals are excellent for photography, but for video, the story and storytelling are as if not more critical and don't require the best visual quality. Good audio definitely is essential also.

      With the 3 lenses on the iPhone I've moved on from using external lenses specifically for the reasons you've mentioned like one more thing to carry. The anamorphic content does look amazing, although I'm not a filmmaker. I'd probably use that lens as much as I use my action cam which is very very little.

    Apparently, my new iPhone 13 Pro thinks that my studio lights constitute a “low light environment”. Even next to an open window with bright afternoon light streaming directly in, the slightest zooming produces awful video quality. It took me forever to figure out that the issue is the light, because I never would have believed that that was the missing piece. I chose the pro because it comes with a telephoto camera, not realizing what a waste that camera is. If I had it to do over I’d get the regular 13 and purchase a telephoto lens to use over the standard wide angle camera.

    • @nikytamayo
      @nikytamayo ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@markomclane475 that's an ai issue, not a camera issue. Because most telephoto sensors are so small, phone AI will automatically switch to the main sensor in dark conditions even when zoomed in past the point where it produces usable video.
      This isn't just limited to Apple.
      The only solution is a third party app that gives you more lens control. Or buy a phone with a bigger tele sensor.

    I own Sandmarc lenses for use on my regular iPhone 12. I love the lenses. The only thing I don’t have is a anamorphic lens. I love the space of “mobile rig photography” as I’m breaking into photography I know there’s probably a video on “the best beginner cameras” but this phone is ALWAYS in my pocket and my lenses all fit in a small sling I can easily walk around with without bulk. Is the technology there? Yes and no, I purchased a Apexel zoom lens and you can start to see the degradation of the image when the phone is trying to do more than it’s capable of. Although still fun to use all these and get slightly better than “stock”
    I did enjoy your video and thank you for the breakdown and sharing.

      I’m curious as to how you are achieving small apertures on fixed aperture phone camera lenses. Software (i.e., camera apps) are only simulating the optical results of a stopped down lens, no? Am I missing something here about the design and construction of the lens or lenses built into our phones (or these accessory lenses)?
      As I’m sure you are aware, there needs to be a mechanical means of making the hole smaller (the Iris). This is what gives us deeper depth of field. It’s physics (specifically optics). I’m really not ridiculing you, but I don’t think you’ve thought this through. Or it could be that I’m ignorant and you can set me straight.

    I have a Galaxy Note8 and a 58 mm lens. The most noticeable difference is in the ability to shoot portrait with a bit of bokeh on the main camera. Yes Galaxy Note8 has a Live Focus feature and this is where it gets interesting, when mounting the lens onto the 2nd telephoto camera and uses Live focus not to actually shoot bokeh but to force the camera to use the telephoto one not the main camera and THEN removing the lens, it messed either the telephoto camera or the main camera up by some unknown shenanigans and caused the phone to be unable to take Live Focus shot whatsoever. The fix is simply to clear the camera app cache.

  • @umbertoaguiar

    Very good information. I've watched the video three times! I live in the UK so access to lenses such as Moment or Beastgrip is more difficult as I buy only from Amazon UK where the return is hassle free so I bought a ShiftCam 60mm . I used it with my iPhone 13 Pro two days ago . The resulting images shot outdoor were so beautiful!
    The original, unchanged images even looked like cinema.
    I was using Mavis because something went wrong with beastcam, my favourite cam app, as the images were over exposed no matter what I tried. I have a great dislike for filmic pro and its primitive, labyrinth like interface so I use either Beastcam or Mavis . I am a broadcaster cameraman and feel at home with those two apps. Can't say the same about the erratic, poorly designed filmic pro.
    I think it's definitely worth having smartphone camera lenses. The only problem I had was with the case and extra costs. Those clips to attach lens to phone simply don't work so you do need to get a specially designed phone case that is made by the lens manufacturer in order to get a perfect attachment of the lens to your phone. But cases such as ShiftCam's case are not any near as protective as my UAG Monarch carbon fibre case, for example, and I wasn't willing to shoot outdoors with my expensive iPhone without proper protection. Fortunately, there was a solution. Shiftcam's "in case lens mount "is compatible with my UAG body armour so I could use the Shiftcam lenses with the UAG case . The best of both worlds.
    The. problem with the extra cost is that If I buy a beast grip lenses then I will need to buy a beast cage as well and that alone costs as much (or more ) as a lens, for example. And to get a" in case lens mount "for iPhone 13 Pro I have to buy the case which comes with the lens mount which I couldn't find to buy separately (there is one for iPhone 12 Pro. I guess it will fit?)

    • @durarian1978
      @durarian1978 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope it wont fit, Iphone 12Pro and 13 Pro have different camera dimensions. I had great interest buying a shiftcam incase camera protector like you and wrote the support of shiftcam. They said that there were many negative Revisions of the Phone getting to bulky with the incase product applied. So you will definitely have to buy the whole set: Case+Mount

I have an iPhone 13 Pro and it has trouble finding focus, besides it demands that I use my fingers to blind the other lenses in order for it to not change the “best” one for the taking. Yes, but once you put a tele-converter onto something that's f/1.5 it's no longer 1.5. The quality difference you're seeing is from the sensor size. The wide has about 4x the surface area of the tele lens.

But now I’m stepping up my camera to a iPhone 14 Pro and I’m wondering if I will need or use my lenses. For photography on the 14 Pro I thinking I really just need the phone and a polarizing filter. Ok maybe an ND filter or two.😎 I’ll probably try lenses to see but may not carry them around.

    What do you recommend for wide angle lens for filming volleyball?

    Nice video and great info. I'm not a massive fan of the lines that the anamorphic lens gives when I make my hiking videos, I feel they are too intrusive to the footage, but i do like the 'feel' that it gives, the cinematic feel without the black lines. However, I would like improve my videos with lenses, zooming in without losing the image quality, which one would you recommend? I have a Samsung s20 which I think has decent video quality but not so much when I zoom in digitally. Thanks!

      The digital lens flares are not really cinematic. We’re fooling ourselves and/or buying into marketing hype if we think so. Here’s the thing: 1) Lens flare in general is not desirable and professionals go to great lengths to avoid it. 2) When it is unavoidable, it looks very different than the digital look of horizontal lens flare bars. 3) That said, lens flare might on rare occasion be an aesthetic choice.
      Which brings me to the abomination that is JJ Abrams. I don’t know if he is the original abuser of post production lens flares, but he’s certainly a major abuser/over user of lens flare created in post. Maybe some believe that he expanded film vocabulary, but I think he created a rather stupid cliche. Still, it was an artistic choice, even if I personally think it was a bad one in most cases.
      My issue with anamorphic lens flare today is we’ve somehow learned not only to accept it, but to desire it. It’s like we’ve cultivated a taste for shit sandwiches to compensate for the fact that we have to occasionally eat a shit sandwich. We should avoid eating shit sandwiches when possible and not intentionally make them a regular part of our cinema creation diet.
      I own a moment anamorphic lens. In addition to the flare issue, it suffers from distortion and softness in the corners. Sadly, every other anamorphic lens for phone cameras I’ve seen is even worse. I was hoping the Smallrig lens would offer an improvement, but it doesn’t.
      I am all in favor of working with the equipment that I have, mastering it so I can minimize its deficiencies, and learning techniques to overcome these deficiencies or to meet new challenges. I’m considering fabricating or purchasing a French flag to help kill lens flare, and/or acquiring a matte box with hard mattes.
      To be honest, I’m fighting a sense that I would be defeating the primary purposes of using a phone camera, which are ease of use/availability and lower cost (using something I already own rather than having to acquire or rent an expensive camera system and all the lenses and accessories).

    Such great content. I'm curious if your thoughts are the same for filming sports. Are there any 3rd party lenses that you would use for sports. Super long telephoto? Something like Monocular Telescope 4k 10-300x40mm, Adult High-Power HD, with Smartphone Tripod Adapter, 30x Zoomable Bak4 Optical Prism for Outdoor Birding, Hunting, Camping, Travel, Concerts. Anyway, my favorite thing about the 14 day filmmaker course is that the concepts are laid out clearly, and then the application is there to execute the concepts. A great match of theoretical and real-world application.

      I've never used it so I can't speak from experience, but my gut tells me trying to film THAT long of a focal length with an iPhone would be hard. With how small and light the phones are they're super susceptible to micro shakes which only get exaggerated at longer focal lengths.

  • @Sir-Kay
    @Sir-Kay ปีที่แล้ว

    From what I'm seeing the Telephoto is on the top left, Main camera right below it & the Ultrawide on the middle right right? And on the moment phone case you can screw on 3rd party lenses to those 1st two lense while the Ultrawide doesn't have thread to screw lense on to am I right again? if yes, why doesn't the case have thread over the Ultrawide, thanks.

    Great analysis, thanks. I actually got the blue flare Moment Anamorphic lens for my iPhone 14 Pro because I want to shoot music videos. I was just considering also getting the 58m one but I think what you are saying about the in-phones lenses being good enough will let me spend that $$ on lighting instead. :-)

    SO I just recently purchased the 58mm from Moment, Im expecting good things based off of many reviews. I have gotten to know my Galaxy S20+ very well, I wanted to go the next step and see what I could accomplish with a third party lens. I have been a mobile photographer for 10+ years, and this is my first time trying a legit lens for a smartphone. I hope I made a good choice in buying the 58mm. For photography not videography.
