Nice comparison, Love moment lenses, but having had issues with the cases and the bayonet mount being plastic I'll take a 17mm screwthread any day of the week now.
Sandmarc is just amazing build quality. Absolutely no issues. Every bit as good a lens, no headaches, for way less money. Sandmarc is simply a superior design.
I have 3 sandmarc lenses. The tele lens has a filter thread vs moment. The moment’s attachment feels better because sandmarc’s screw on doesn’t always fit perfectly so I may try few times before it sits
Try them out yourself in real life and I think you’ll find that the Sandmarc gives you everything you hoped the Moment would. I’ve seen numerous TH-cam videos “demonstrating” the “clear superiority” of the Moment lens only to find that my Sandmarc lens delivers everything the Moment was claimed to. The real difference between Moment and Sandmarc? Affiliate program versus no affiliate program.
I bought the 58mm Moment lens to use with the iPhone 14Pro, primarily on the main (48mp) lens. I read that there were issues with the Moment 58mm lens not fully compatible with the larger sensor of the iPhone 14pro. I did my own tests and discovered that while the image is very sharp in the center, it quickly deteriorates toward the sides (ghosting, etc.). Very obvious. I assume(?) this is because the Moment 58mm lens was not originally designed for the new larger sensor on the main lens. I also tested the Moment 58mm lens on the iPhone 14Pro's telephoto lens and I didn't see any obvious ghosting, I'm guessing because it uses a smaller sensor. The lens is solid built with great optics, but.... I'm really disappointed in this lens as I bought it to use on the larger sensor lens, not over the telephoto lens. Moment's statement that it's compatible with the iPhone14Pro is only partially accurate. Moment needs to update this lens for the larger camera sensors, similar to what Beastgrip did with their new 1.7x tele lens. Thanks for your review and comments.
Ah this is very interesting to read. Thanks for feeding this back. Perhaps Moment somewhat hid a couple of issues people may come across then with the iphone 14 pro max as the video seemed pretty solid. I would love to get my hands on the Beastgrip 1.7x lens for sure. Thanks for watching!
@@SmartphoneFilmmaker Which iPhone did you shoot this 58mm comparison on? I'm looking for a lens system and, having read about the issues with softness/vignetting on the Moment lenses am wondering if Sandmarc plays better with the iPhone 14pros and their larger sensor....
@@americansafarico I used the iphone 12. Both work excellent on that iphone but i have heard of a few people now having some issues with the Moment 58mm on the iphone 14 models.
@@SmartphoneFilmmaker thanks for letting me know. I’ve got an email out to Sandmarc to see which of their lenses are working well with the 14 pro. We’ll see what they come back with
Following up here. Sandmarc confirmed that their 58mm and their 1.33x anamorphic work great with the iPhone 14 pro. Of course, Moment say the same. But based on reviews by JCKRGB, Moment lenses have serious issues with the new sensor on the 14 pro that the Sandmarc's don't suffer from. He speculates that it's because of the wider opening on the backside of the lenses with the 17mm mount. I've got both the tele and the anamorphic on order from Sandmarc. They're redesigning their 1.55x for the 14 pro, which is also encouraging.
I have an iPhone 14 Pro and I am split between these 2. Since both company are launching their updated version (T-series from moment and Lens V2 from Sandmarc) and I couldn’t find any proper review yet for these updated ones.😢
You might mention that in the bokeh test the details that are in focus which is typically more important than bokeh itself is way better on the sandmarc at least in these images even though it's a bokeh test it's worth noting.
Thanks for your review . I had the old Moment and old Sandmarc tele lenses. They were not pair with the Beastgrip tele 2.0 and the Shiftcam tele which are both better lenses. I don't know how good is the new Sandmarc. I am sure it's better than the previous one? But how much better? The new 1.7 Beastgrip is better but not much better than the previous 2.0 Anyway, it's good to see the market for iPhone photographic products moving forward despite Apple making sure to make everybody's lives more difficult with their usual irresponsible manufacturing and phones which are a tiny smaller or bigger than the previous one, just enough to force people to buy new cases, new cages etc. I think the game changer will be Freewell with their Sherpa line which they promise to be future proof. I hope they will release a tele lens this year.
Ah interesting. I have not heard of shiftcam lenses before so I may have to look into those. Unfortunately I don’t have the previous Sandmarc tele so I can’t answer. This new one is excellent though. Really impressed. Love the look of the Beastgrip tele too. Yeah these new larger sensors/lenses on the iPhones are great but annoying for external lenses. I had actually spoke to freewell but their new line didn’t work with my iPhone 12 it seemed.
Excellent video, but I'm still torn between the Moment and Sandmarc lenses. I'm not an experienced photographer, but I would like to have a wide and tele lens for my iPhone 13 for an upcoming trip into nature. Based on most reviews, Moment seems to have a slight edge on the quality of the lenses. Sandmarc has a better price package, including a phish lens and covers for travelling. Is there a difference in user-friendliness for beginners between the lenses or required apps?
Thanks! There isn't a huge difference really. I personally lean towards Moment as slotting the lenses into the phones case mount is slight quicker and easier. Also they have an 'opened box' section on their website often with lenses that are cheaper. Sandmarc is excellent though if you are looking to save money.
You’re welcome. I would love to get my hands on the new Beastgrip lens. It looks great. It’s very similar and made largely to also fit in the new larger iPhone 14 sensors.
It's a pity that these companies only make cases with lens mounts for the iPhone. It seems to me that photos with these lenses would look very cool on new smartphones with a 1 inch sensor.
the problem is with the shipping volumes of those other phones. iphones sell *way* over 100M each year, possibly closer to 200M. in comparison, those existing models with a 1-inch sensor are only selling like tens of thousands a year, even with a higher percentage of users who are photography enthusiasts, the numbers are still far too low. it’s also expensive to develop for each model for accessory makers, targeting smaller demographics would be a financial risk for them. but if the supply chain rumors are true, we should be seeing iphone16’s pro series with a massive upgrade on the main (wide) camera next year. unfortunately this year we’re only getting a minor improvement on the main camera this year, essentially using the same lens that the 14pro had, most improvements are gonna be on the telephoto with a periscope
Depends how far, sometimes with the lens on its hard to properly focus on an object only 40m away, it definitely reduces your maximum focus range, but sometimes with landscapes as long as your subject is close enough it doesn't matter if the background isnt razor sharp because your subject pops so much. Its hit and miss, I can put it on and think perfect then take it off and get a better picture, other times the lens is the reason the picture looks so good. Though 2x is more like 1.6x digital zoom on your phone and the 3x lenses are more like 2.2x digital zoom, without the quality loss.
If I have Pixel 7 Pro (will probably get 8 or 9 later), and I ordered buy my gf a newest iPhone, there's no point in getting older lens, like 58mm M series by moment, correct? New phones have bigger sensors, and those lens are from 6-8 years ago at this point.
Too an extent but not massively. I would avoid zooming in on any phone as that immediately diminishes the image quality. I would say if someone is pretty far away then it probably won't be much help to be honest.
Hey. I have an iphone 12 and slightly lean towards Moment but I have read a positive things about the Sandmarc being used with the iphone 14 series. Depends on your budget too as the Sandmarc lens needs only their case but not a filter adapter unlike Moment.

I tried to buy the 58mm moment lens, but sadly the lens never got to me, it was returned to sender twice… I understand shipping issues happen, and I’m not even bothered by the shipping issues. What is sad tho is that moment wouldn’t refund me for the lens until it was tracked as being at their warehouse…. It’s been over a month and they still haven’t refunded me. I had to reach out to my credit card company to dispute the charge :/ :/ :/ I just get a copy and paste reply from moment whenever I email them and ask for my refund.

Screw on is worse than bayonet because the lens doesn’t sit perfectly into thread right away and you try few times before it happens
