How to wash pillows in washer
What's the best way to keep your pillows clean and white? Use the washing machine! I use a top loader but any washing machine should work.
First, every pillow is different, depending on what they’re made of. So shredded memory foam, molded foam, down, feathers and other materials are going to have varying washing directions so first consult the tag or website to see if your pillow is machine washable.
I mean I’ve seen dry clean only pillows and so we don’t want to ruin any.
But barring that, here’s what to do:
First, how to wash your pillows
If your pillow is washable, wash on the gentle cycle with warm water. Most of my pillows say wash cold but I like to use warm.
Add Oxyclean to your usual detergent. Set it on the longest wash cycle. You may need to do two cycles to get the yellowing out. And the dirt on pillows can be stubborn!
Do an extra rinse cycle.
Then, use the setting that gets the most water out.
GETTING PILLOWS FLUFFY AGAIN
My tip for getting them fluffy again is not to hang dry. That’s why they’re lumpy. Use your dryer.
You can use a very low heat setting, or if you’re worried or the pillow won’t take heat, use air dry or air fluff. It will take a long time, but the spinning and air will still take less time than air drying and it won’t get lumpy.
You can use dryer balls or tennis balls and that breaks up the lumps as they dry.
It will take multiple dry cycles (especially on air fluff) but it will dry eventually.
If you don’t have a dryer take down your pillow every so often and shake and fluff it, then rehang. Moving around the fluff inside will also help get it all dried out. It needs to be completely dry or you get mold and nobody wants a moldy pillow.
Some pillows have adjustable filling, so if you line dry I can just reach in and pull apart the wool filling/fluff it up should it feel lumpy.
We love the Coop pillows. Their pillow comes with extra ½ pound of fluff so if you ever need to you can refill or refresh the foam. They’re well made and fully adjustable, which means you can add or take out the fill so your pillow is the height you want. ‘
Really quick, the Eden is their softest pillow. The Original is a medium firm pillow. And they each have a 5 year warranty so you’re not going be be buying a new pillow every 6 months or so. Totally worth the cost.
And if you don’t have a dryer you can always wash your pillows at a laundromat. They have those large ones that can fit more pillows inside.
Now if you have any pee or sweat stains on your pillow, treat that separately. It’s the same way you clean a mattress with pee. We’ll put a link to that video in the description if you want to check it out. We’ve helped hundreds of people save their mattresses with this video. It really works!
Once you’re done with whatever method you use, get waterproof pillow protectors. Then you hardly ever have to wash your pillows, you just wash the cover with your sheets and pillowcases each week. Much easier.
I’m a 17 year old boy, I’d like to say I’m pretty hygienic, I shower every day, wash my sheets once a week, but my pillows, I’m not proud of them…I didn’t even know you could wash pillows so for a while I was just sad about how yellow-ey they looked, thank you for this :}
Thank you for watching and wanting to clean your pillows! Man do I wish my college aged son would even wash the sheets. You're way ahead of most 17 year olds and I'm proud of you!!
Super impressed that a 17- year old boy keeps himself and HIS BED clean!
-Heavy Duty setting
-Extra High Spin
-Warm water
-Extra rinse

traditionally, in India, we beat the washed and dried pillows with a stick, placing the pillows on a wooden surface and moving from one edge to the other end, multiple beatings helps to fluff up the pillows. Of course, we are blessed with a lot of sun, and can dry them up real well before the fluffing by beating. Thanks for the tip. another cautionary practice is to put two pillows at one go, so that the machine balances well.
Your way is actually the best method to clean pillows (even clothing), a washing machine tries to mimic this with the agitator but hand wash is best and let it dry out naturally whilst hanging.
I’ve never washed my pillows and now I’m just learning because I feel like I need to. Sounds weird but it’s cool how I’m at that point where watching something like this actually helps a lot and is appreciated 🤟🏽

I just now decided to try and wash my pillows since I'm bored at home and I used to only wash the fabric cases for them, admittedly I never knew you could put them in the wash without damaging the machine. Looking forward to clean smelling ones tonight. ☺️
When you said 'im super excited" I can relate to things like this 🤣🤣🤣
Yes, it's soon fun to see the results!
I’m so glad we have the same washer made me so much less worried about breaking my washer or messing up the pillows.
There are so many kinds of washing machines. I wish I could try this on more. Do you like yours as much as we like ours?
@@CleanFreakGermaphobe Yea way better then the washer and dryer that came with the house.
@@CleanFreakGermaphobe Question for drying the pillows via dryer. how many cycles should I do? since it’s obviously not gonna be dry on the first try with low temperature on.
Commenting because of the storage kitty in the background at 6:58. 😊
I'm surprised by how many people didn't know they can wash their pillows. I'm doing a wash of all pillows in our house and putting them in pillow protectors because my husband likes tossing them when he says any tiny stain.
Teddy likes to sneak into as many videos as possible. If I open something I have to hide the box because he’s going to get inside and make noise. I have to restart my filming.
Yes, pillow protectors are an underappreciated way to prevent pillow stains!
KITTY!
I've come back to this video a few times already. My pillows come so clean! Like new. My pregnancy hormones are SO wild. Even with 2 pillow protectors under my pillowcase it smells greasy like my hair after a month or 2. Lol thanks!
Thanks for the pillow info. Very helpful

Thanks for your video. You answered my question how to wash pillows to a T. Happy Holidays ladies and all your subscribers, Kelley
Happy holidays to you too, Kelley! We appreciate you and each subscriber. Except the ones who complain about Diana's tile, ha ha ha!!
Just imagine how clean your wash would be if you had a washer with an agitator! These washers with the castrated agitator is completely worthless from my experience. Thanks for sharing your tips!
Have you washed a pillow in a washer with an agitator? Mine has an agitator and I’m worried I will either ruin my washer or ruin my pillow.
@@a.d.723 Most agitator washers have different cycles so you shouldn't have to worry anoud the agitator destroying your pillow or your pillow ruining your washer. Keep in mind in the wash cycle, there is also water in the tank so the agitator will not beat up your pillow too much. Try gentle cycle or regular cycle if heavy duty cycle is too much for your pillows.
Yeah I was skeptical of the washer with no agitator too but I bit the bullet and purchased one, it does a better job for doing pillows. I have always washed pillows and sometimes had to go to the laundromat to use the front load washers that also have no agitator.. these new washers are just front loaders turned upright..
You never have to worry about damaging your clothes with European style washers
I have washed a sleeping bag in a washing machine with a agitator and it ripped it pretty badly on the bedding setting.
Polyfill all through my laundry room when I pulled out the fabric.
I still occasionally find a little fluff in weird corners from that.
But at least I'm glad I did my cheap sleeping bag first as a test before putting in any other beddings.
Long story short I wouldn't trust agitator washing machines with a pillow.
Thanks sister
Kudos to you for showing your pillows. My pillows look like a murder scene.
Instead of using oxy clean you can use baking soda and white vinegar . They're more eco friendly and are good for your health.
Uhh… I wouldn’t use vinegar in a washing machine. Wouldn’t want residual vinegar getting mixed with bleach, unless you want to make chlorine gas.
My washing machine repairman told me to run a wash of vinagar & baking soda once a month to clean out the parts of your machine u can’t clean that ends up leaving smells. You can buy a tablet also. But that’s basically what’s in it.
Same as w/ your dishwasher.
hi! chem student here. u should use either baking soda or vinegar, but not both at the same time. baking soda is acidic, and vinegar is basic, so when u mixed up it basically just forms water plus some residuals cause they neutralize each other. They act much better seppartly c:
@@jacintamadridnoguer7759 I think vinegar is acidic and baking soda is basic.
My daughter threw up on two of the pillows we own and I definitely am in search of something to clean these pillows asap!

Laundrymats have the best washers for washing pillows and massive bedding, but last time I used one cuz my washer died, I found a bedbug on my comforter😬 Thankfully I found it and took action and didnt get infested.
Bed bugs are my nightmare - so happy you got rid of them. I guess that's a risk you take using a public laundromat🙀
Hi... Can you share how to wash natural latex pillow? Thanks....
I attempted to wash my pillows in the past in my front loader and my washer stopped, maybe because the pillows got so heavy? Is it better to wash them in a top loader washing machine?
Have you put in the washer more than one pillow?
Is it fine with topload 2in1 machine/dryer?
Should I remove the agitator on a top loaded machine when washing pillows as mine is removable & should I wash one at a time or 2 as when it goes into the spin cycle it may rumble & you have to abort.
Thx mom!!!!
Any time!
what is the brand pillow you washed in the video?
'FOLEX' CLOTHES AND CARPET CLEANER will get ANYTHING out! Lipstick, grease, tomato sauce, ink, blood, wine (even works on blonde furniture)...Pick it up at lowes / home depot in cleaning supplies area.... My daughter kept the kid's clothes looking like new with this stuff!...
Also, WHITE TENNIS SHOES look like new much longer! I'd be rich if I got paid for recommending this so many times! LOL
How much cleaning spray do you have to use? I have an awesome laundry stain remover that I love, instead of Oxy Clean. Is that okay? Do I need to soak the whole pillow in the stain remover/fighter?
If it's for laundry then i would say you should be able to use it on the pillow as for the amount of product id say just spray it on medium don't drench it in whatever you use just spray back and fourth kind of the way you would use a fabric freshener maybe do 2 passes on both sides check on google to double check if the product you want to use will work also some products have the info on the label and list all the different uses. Hope this helps
I use dreft stain spray takes anything out. And odoban to sanitize
Many thanks for this - great methods. However, how do you prevent the pillow from floating on top of the water in a top loader? Ta.
You can either poke holes in it so you can get the air to escape, or use something to weight it down. Lysol laundry sanitizer actually weights down pillows and comforters. I'm not sure why, but when I use it it help, when I don't, it floats. Or you can just use your muscles and beat it in lol. I've done all of these, they all work. Just be careful if you're cutting holes, you have to do it in the right place so it doesn't further rip open.
I soaked mine overnight in a bucket weighted down with a dumbbell after my cat peed on it.
I didn't have any floating problems since it was already waterfilled when I threw it in the wash.
So you could do that.
Yeah. New pillow time.
They're emotionally attached so they're keeping it. People love their pillows!
I need some Oxiclean....I wash my pillows but still end up with left in stains
Does this work for couch cushions?
Can you still do warm water if it says “machine wash cold” ? Do you recommended warm always?
So I have the older model washing machine I think because it only goes up to high spin. However I am curious why warm instead of hot? I know technically hot is harsher on fabrics but I use hot on all my bedding because I’m so paranoid 😂 also, no pre soak? I can imagine that making the pillows super heavy and that makes my washer uneven but I just want to make sure I’m washing them the best possible way lol I have at least 20 pillows I need to wash today 🤣
I want a washer and dryer like that
I was thinking the same thing!
Baking soda + laundry powder helps then after washing put it in a dryer
Love your avatar and name lol
Great video! Thanks!
the only thing i hate with cleaning pillows is getting the balance right,
I don't have ox clean can I use Lysol spray?
I prefer to keep my pillows inside of a plastic cover before the external one (cotton).
I do too
Does it make you sweat
question, after washing 2 pillows and the spin cycle started it sounded like space x launching a rocket in my laundry room and the machine started coming alive. i did two to provide counter balance during the spin but it didnt help.. its a top load washer. any ideas, tips?
You may never get a reply. I have the same problem. Maybe replace the pillow and get a high quality cover so the pillow can be used without washing for a long time. Also what I thought of...next time I wash pillows I'll stop just before the spin, put my pillow in the clean bathtub and force as much of that heavy water out manually before I put the pillow/pillows back in the wash to spin.
You just need to rearrange the pillows to get the machine back in balance. I NEVER wash 1 by itself - that always causes my washer to be off balance during the spin cycle. I also have the problem when doing rugs - I just stop it and redistribute the weight evenly around the tub.
How do you clean or wash gel pillows please?
Thank you for the video. Could you please tell me what brand is that pillow protector pillow case. I need one desperately. Waiting for you answer. Thank you in advance

What if I don’t have the tag and don’t know if I can’t can wash it in my wash machine, I did put a pillow in my moms front loader and I think it was on delicate, it tore up my pillow, I thought many years ago I did wash a pillow, I gave a Maytag washer it’s top loader and has the thing in the middle, I put my pillow in there with water but got nervous so I did a search, saw your post here, I like this pillow because it’s seems more better then the new pillows I just bought my children
Any suggestions
Hi, do you know the brand name of your pillow? If so you can reach out to them or check their website for care instructions. But otherwise, you can do this method by hand, ideally you have a vacuum (much better) th-cam.com/video/N1PnYe_NB5c/w-d-xo.html
Then use a waterproof pillow protector to extend the life of your pillow. I know they can be loved, so I think it's worth the extra money to help them last longer.
Our favorite pillow protector is from Coop - www.cleanfreakandgermaphobe.com/coop because it's soft and doesn't make any sound, plus it's like their mattress protector which we've tested (same material) and use ourselves. It works really well.
Do you have to use a wool ball in the dryer?
You can use tennis balls or those plastic kind. If you have neither one then you could try to fluff it up when you get it out of the dryer.
Hello! Is there a reason you wouldn't use bleach, ammonia, or vinegar?
Thank you!
Some people just don't care for sanitizing. Or think that washing something also sanitizes it, which it doesn't. Laundry detergent isn't a sanitizer
I have a top loader with an agitator and when I wash it sounds like an earthquake any tips?
Make sure the load is balanced. Evenly distribute the weight around the washer so when it spins it's not lop sided
I wash 2 or 3 towels opposite
What type of washer do you have?
I have the same washing machine and the water never covers the top half of the pillow. Any advice? Thanks!
Same problem I had(same machine also). Decided to go to the laundry mat and used the big heavy duty machines. Pillows came out great. Nice and fresh
I don’t have your sophisticated settings on either washer or dryer. A bit tricky to translate to an older machine! Still helpful information aside from multiple settings you have!
Hottest water, heavy duty wash, after it's done you can put on rinse cycle again/spin again.
Would you suggest just 1 pillow at a time in a regular home washer ??
You can do two at a time 😄
I would think one pillow would make it go out of balance and go gabunga, bunga, bunga.
I add 2 or 3 towels to wash opposite.
6:52 cat
He tries to get in every video he can 😀
Mine says spot clean only but I really want to wash it...
I've washed a lot of things that say spot clean only (like mattress covers). Unless it's a delicate fabric I totally would. But it's up to you!
Washing might/probably ruin the waterproofing. I washed my mattress cover and ruined the waterproofing which was supposed to protect from spills, bedwetting, etc.
I think it's better to cut it open remove the fluff and then wash the cloth. Stich the pillow with the chain mechanism so that it will be easier next time
But then the foam never gets clean??
My pillows just float in the wash. Any tips? It's a top loader. Pillows are down
Okay but what about this stuffed animal duck platypus thing pillow with eyes. I would look at the tags but the tags are faded out and blank now
Hello! i have a question, do you recommend doing each pillow one at a time, or can you do multiple at once?
You can do more than one at a time. I don't know how big your washing machine or size of pillow but I would only do 2 at once in mine.
Can I wash 3 pillows at once in that same washer you have?
If they're not very thick pillows and don't have any foam in them, yes.
6:51 aww your cat
He’s struggling but it’s cute lol
What can I use in replacement of a tennis ball?
I got old sock and rolled them into tight balls
Or a wool dryer ball
What if you don't have a heavy duty programme on your washing machine?
Just use hot water and/or an extra rinse.
I just have one problem, whenever I put in my pillows the water that the pillow absorbs makes it super heavy and makes my washing machine tumble all around the place and makes me scared it going to break it, I've tried counter balancing it with another pillow on the opposite side but it ends up worse, what do i do?
Go to a laundromat…
Is my 7kg washer can wash my pillow? 🥺
Yes it can
Mine has an agitator and I can't wash pillows in it. I tried and had to stop my machine quickly when it was spinning or the drum would've broken.
can you wash more than one pillow.
Yes, you can wash 2.
Are those Coop pillows asthma/allergy friendly? Love your channel and now I gotta wash out my pillows! I have 2 cats and Im betting theres tons of cat hair

what should you do if your pillow is yellow?
CAN YOU USE THIS METHOD ON MATTRESSES
IDK???
Can you fit your mattress in the washing machine. 😉
I washed a serta pillow and cant get water out of it
My liner will fall down, my pilloelws after wash looks 10 kg after rinse NG too in washing machine
When I washed our pillows in the washer the pillows floated and the washer over flowed making quite a mess… I’d suggest squeezing the air our and submerge into a half filled washer…then complete the fill.
That was my question. Thanks!

All right....who out there is peeing on their pillows? 🤣
everytime i put my pillow in the washing machine it literally exploded in the washer and i have the same washer as you have , and i also put it on delicate to be sure ... what do i doo i've lost 2 pillow already lol
It's got to be the kind of pillow you have. What does the tag say? I wouldn't do it again. Use the hand wash method instead.
I have a washing machine that has an agitator in it. Could I still wash pillows in it? The last time I did, all the stuffing was to one side and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get it back to normal. 🥺
I would take it to a laundromat or do our baking soda wash by hand method, instead. th-cam.com/video/N1PnYe_NB5c/w-d-xo.html
