@@creativeloafer9792 Yeah, but Tide changed it's smell and formula to cheaper synthetic ingredients...many have complained about it. I miss the original Tide from years ago.
I've been only using Tide, Gain and Arm and Hammer for years but mostly Tide followed by Gain. Used Gain and Arm and Hammer when I was broke or running low on funds. I'm glad all 3 brands did well. Might have to go back to liquid Tide as I've been used Tide Pods for about 2 years now because of ease. I don't mind paying more for quality so I'll still stick with Tide unless it's so much more than Arm and Hammer or Gain. Oh, good thing I never tried Persil as they're supposed to be really good but I could never justify the price they charged. They're easily $4 - $5 more than what I pay for my Tide while Gain and Arm and Hammer we're usually $3 - $4 less than Tide.
I watch a lot of review type videos and I've been watching these for years and here's what I can tell you. If you watch about a 16 minute video from this guy, you are getting the equivalent to about a 45-minute video from most product reviewer- testers. He talks fast and moves it along and does not beat any subject to death. I like the way he finishes each segment with a full-screen chart that you can pause and analyze. I think this channel and Torque Test are about the best you're going to find on here.
I agree 💯 I haven't seen the other channel but I just shared this video to 20 men over 40 because this matters to us and we don't have time to waste lol

It's SOO nice to see your loving support for what your husband does to educate the rest of us consumers out here who have ALWAYS wondered "are we spending our hard earned & hard to come by money on the correct products, that all have the same claims (or about the same)"? Without the right support system behind a project or someone doing a project, the results are never quite the same as one that has the correct support. So props to both of you for developing & delivering such valuable information and content that we all have been desperate to know about without doing what it is that you both do! Many Thanks & Much Love & support from your followers out here!! Keep up the amazing work & know that YOU ARE APPRECIATED!! Thank You!✌🏼🩷😊
Who knew laundry detergents could be so dramatic? I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see if the Tide Pods would defeat the mighty gear oil. It was like the World Cup of stains!
The best thing for gear oil, or any other oil is ammonia. I stank up 3 loads of laundry one time when I got a little gear oil from the foot of my boat. The ammonia took that smell, and stain right out.
Great video and comparison per usual. As someone with severely sensitive skin I would really like to see a follow up with free and clear/sensitive skin options. Both compared to each other and their standard formulas. At least with the Arm and Hammer (what I use) and the Tide options, since they were the top picks.
That’s why I’m subscribed his tests are very thorough and very fair & he’s not afraid to say which is which. I like this channel & I know 3-4 others that watch this channel
Agreed. The only thing I would have suggested for this test is to have the washer a bit more full with other items. Top loaders work better when they have a full load (NOT over full though) because the clothes can rub against each other and help with removing stains during the agitation stage.
I just noticed that when I open a Project Farm video I habitually hit "Like" even before I start watching. I think I'm just so grateful for this man's ingenuity and commitment to methodical, transparent standards that we all benefit from.
@@ProjectFarm i use degreeser.. then go buy new cloths.. they burn well tho.. ausie..we have tide & ive heard of persell. omo was the best.. but. gretta put a stop to real cleaners..
My husband is a diesel mechanic. I wash his clothes separately from everyone else's. Over more than twenty years, I've used many different products to keep his shirts clean & odor free. As of now, I'm impressed with the Arm & Hammer brand with OxyClean & odor protection. Gain was a close second but not as affordable as the A&H. Great video.
After many years of working on farms, in emergency medicine, in field biological research, vehicle and building maintenance, and having done lots of yard work, I finally realized that charcoal gray clothing solved most of my stain problems. It's pretty much all I wear now.
Although my clothes only get gross through multiple hobbies (carpentry/construction, landscaping, auto mech/tech, Mexican food, etc.), I couldn't agree more. Blacks fade badly through tough washes and whites end up looking like a homeless guy used my shirt as his perpetual catch rag/shelter blanket. So, greys (grays?) have become my go-to t-shirt color because they hold up a LOT better than every other color. The only problem is trying to coordinate them with shorts/pants. Thankfully, there is Costco, where I can afford to just buy one of everything.
Likewise I work in an industry with a lot of similar issues and own dozens of identical dark gray shirts and jeans. I look like I wear the same clothes every day. But it absolutely prevents stains from showing up and it's all easily replaced if it gets too damaged. I love not having to think about what I wear.
A little bit of borax and washing soda added really boosts performance. I've been using the Arm & Hammer Odor Blasters with a little borax and washing soda for years. The fresh burst scent stays in the clothes longer than more expensive ones and with the inexpensive additives beats others I've tried. It's the cheapest on the list and beat out many more expensive brands.
I've spent years in appliance repair and found by users and self that Tide was the most trusted brand. Personally I use either Tide or Gain detergents in powder form. The only problem I found with liquid form is they over time slimes up the outer tub and outer basket, otherwise they're great. Best additives I use is a quarter cup or so of a Hydrogen Peroxide cleaner for washing and White Vinegar for rinse. The easiest way to add the Vinegar is using a Downy Ball. The Vinegar helps by softening, making colors brighter and eliminating foul odors. As usual, Thanks Todd
When traveling and unable to shower. Add some white vinegar to wipes. Using that to wipe away odors from toes, armpits and crotch area makes a big difference.
I used to use white vinegar in the old Downy ball to make sure the dye on my new cotton clothing was set. It worked compared to when I didn't do that, but I still have no idea why.
I have been a mechanic/fabricator all my life and my wife has tried every detergent under the sun to keep my clothes clean, settling on Tide eventually. Guess she picked a winner!
Arm and Hammer is the laundry detergent I have also used for several years. It is the least expensive jug at my local grocery store. Seeing how it performed in this test makes me feel so much better about buying it. I have also used Gain, but it is more expensive and I don't care for the fragrance. Many thanks to Todd for an outstanding video presentation (as usual!!)
Concur. I'm a DIY guy, especially with vehicle maintenance. My winter Behr tan colored coveralls get all kinds of stains. Brake fluid, bearing and joint grease, various lubricants and oils, various fluids. Stain removal would be a good test. Thx PF, best channel on YT
@@ProjectFarm as a person interested in hunting and camouflage, I'd be interested in a UV-free clothes washing episode. Military uniforms are supposed to be washed without UV dye to maintain the imagery-resistant properties and coatings. Hunters have learned that deer can see into the UV range so clothes washed with UV brighteners can alert them. Sport wash and old fashioned soaps are what I've seen, but ALL supposedly makes a UV free version available on base. There is also a Sport Wash UV remover.
Persil liquid and pods. Dash pods for heavy duty. Dash liquid for colder washes. My working clothes washed with Dash pods. Washing on the right temperature and program is also important. We use a Miele machine btw.
From tool reviews now to laundry detergent. Your tests are always ahead of the game and I trust them before anyone else. Thanks for the honest unbiased and well researched reviews! The amount of effort you put in each video should be applauded!
Excellent content, I grew up on a farm myself, and I will affirm that cow waste although a great fertilizer, will take ones breath away with it's pungent aroma 🙂
I just remember when a guy commented on a different video asking for this for his wife, and I was happy to see project farms commitment to his followers and made this. Thank you for all that you teach us.
While I find your results fascinating I would like to add a few caveats. First you should have done a rub test on each product. Every detergent calls for product to be added directly to stains for pretreatment. Also, you used a tub basin. Next time use a front loader that cleans better and are sometimes more difficult for pods. Just a few suggestions to make the tests more comprehensive. Nice video though!
I really like your videos for 1. The content; 2. You introduce your topic and quickly start the video without saying, "And without further ado; 3. You have no dead time in your videos. Every second is filled with pertinent content. Thank you for all the hard work you do to test so many things. I appreciate it.

Todd, you never cease to amaze me. You are THE authority on EVERYTHING. I don't know how I would get through daily life without Project Farm! Thanks again for another informative REAL product evaluation.
As someone in the professional laundry industry, the graying is caused by a process known as redeposition, or redep, when that happens there detergent does not have enough surfactant (bubbles) to carry away the soil. Enzymatic pre-treatment will greatly help on organic food stains, where specialty water-based (typically citrus-based) degreasers are needed for organic-oils and nearly all petroleum oil stains. If you really want that oil stain out go to a drycleaner. The "dry" in drycleaning is just not using water it's washed in highly specialized and controlled solvents.
@@chrisdeneault2735 Alright bud, you tell us: what's your personal laundry soap situation look like today next to your washer machine? Name the products.
One thing I learned about laundry over the years as a mechanic, is regardless of what you use, pretreating a stain with a few drops of the laundry detergent directly on a stain, for about 10 minutes before washing, by far makes a bigger difference than any laundry detergent. Now if you buy a cheap toothbrush or use an old one and scrub in that laundry detergent drops into that stain for 30 seconds, that helps even more.
A little bit of borax and washing soda added really boosts performance also. I've been using the Arm & Hammer Odor Blasters with a little borax and washing soda for years. I never realized how much this channel influences my everyday choices. And im proud of it. Ive always used Tide. And im glad i dot have to test other brands
I swear every video has me either instantly cheering for my brand like it was my favorite football team or wanting a brand of something I don't even have a use for to win. I love this channel!
Idea for a video... everyone has had a septic tank issue. There are tons of "treatment" and monthly care products on the market for a septic tank, but no one can see if they really work because the ranks are underground. Now that would be an interesting topic.
Project Farm hits a new video, and it's 5 am. You know what normal people would do? Yes, they would watch it without any hesitation. I just love this type of informative content!
Awesome video. I have another suggestion. Soak the stained t-shirts for 1 or 2 days in a bucket or tray with its respective detergents so that the detergent can cut through the stains further and do another wash. I do this for heavily stained clothes and it works 99% of the time.
Women do that with lingerie. It also works to pour detergent straight on the stain and rub it in. Better if you catch the stain earlier, but it usually works even right before washing.
@@floycewhite6991 Im a guy and I do that too. I work in the field and stains can get into my uniform. Id rather soak my shirt than buy a new one, especially with this economy
Quick note on the heavily perfumed Tyler wash from a guy who is very familiar with it: no one I know who uses it is actually using it for its power as a detergent. We use whatever unscented version of our preferred detergent and then add a capful of whichever Tyler scent we like. That stuff is strong. Depending on how much you use you can get a nice light scent or you can go full "Abercrombie&Fitch outlet store" on your clothes. And when you are only using it to add scent, one jug lasts plenty long to make the cost very minor. I think we had one jug last like a year and a half. Love the videos. You are a Godsend to all us data driven retail consumers.
I'm not entirely sure there is anything people wouldn't want to see tested in this format. Every single time it's informative and useful. I was looking for a new fan and the last video helped me pick one that is a good value (I went with the Hurricane). Thank you for all the hard work!
This reminds me of how fabric softener is one of the most shockingly problematic products on the market, which is a product I'd love to see you test. They're pretty much 99% marketing, generally adding a waxy layer to your clothes to *feel soft* without actually softening the clothes themselves, and in the long run (or if you use too much of it in a wash) you can actually make it HARDER to clean your clothes because that waxy layer gets in the way. Comparing fabric softeners to regular white vinegar (something that has shown to actually soften the fabric, rather than faking it, and no, there's no vinegar smell after washing) would be amazing to see, although I'm not entirely sure how you'd be able to test them.
Only the Boomer Generation would come up with an idea so insane as "Poison ourselves and two generations of our children to make our laundry 'soft' and smelling like cheap, migraine-inducing artificial fragrances" 🤢.
3/4 cup Armor Hammer Washing soda, 1 cup white vinegar, 1/3 cup epson salt. Works fantastic, better for the environment and less poison on your skin. Makes clothes very soft. Fresh smelling clothes. If needed, use wool balled dabbed in your fav essential oil in dryer
@@emmi5581 I have terrible skin as well and have been using Molly Suds because of the ingredient list but like the test shows, it may not clean the best. I tried A&M before but didn't have great results, may give it another shot.
This guy is a savage. Imagine practical testing, un baised, scientifically and subjectivly correct, and detailed. To see arm and hammer on the top is a surprise...❤❤
Yeah been using A&H for a long time too, I didn't buy it based on price either, I'm using a different brand now but that's only because I like the scent.
Dude I just moved two days ago and got done fixing the sink. Made some food and on my way to my room I was thinking "I need to get some laundry detergent tomorrow" now I know the feeling I've seen from other comments, beautiful.
Tide, Liquid Oxy Clean, Downy. Laundry staples of my life. Also, knowing how to separate laundry, not to overload your machine, pre treating stains, and what wash setting to use are also key components. I never dry whites in the dryer as they can yellow over time.
Newly married in the '70's, my husband worked at a Steel Mill. Known in area Laundromats as 'Mill Clothing', with designated machines. Thinking detergents were basically the same, I was driven by cost and coupons for purchase. After years of noticeable differences in cleaning results, I started documenting and rating brand effectiveness. *Tide* was always the best and the ONLY brand I buy for almost 50 years. I don't buy 'Pods' b/c the size of my loads varies. I also don't buy liquid, too bulky and too much plastic. The worst of the name brands was 'All' (consistently). Pre-treat a heavy stain with Wisk liquid : ) YOU'RE WELCOME!
We buy liquid tide and use 1oz per load regardless of its size and have for a very long time. We have not noticed any change. The savings is huge as a couple of bottles will last a person a year. The big bottles that have 150 to 170 oz in them will give you 3 loads a week for a single bottle a year. Consider trying it for a while and quit over using the soap. You do know the same soap sold a decade ago had small amounts. They increased the size so that you waste more soap and spend more money.
We women know that detergent by itself doesn't work on stains. Stains have to be pretreated with a stain fighter such as Shout or Felsnaptha. But, was an insightful comparison!
yes felsnaptha! i now use the white Goop hand cleaner as my stainfighter. even today I got out chicken wing buffalo sauce/grease off my white and turquoise hat with just rubbing it in with my fingers in the kitchen sink, drying now, no stain. kids shirts and spaghetti sauce disappears with it. Cherry bomb is red and still works the same with pumice stone in it. saves me $ by not throwing clothes to the goodwill
What’s wrong with Consumer Reports? Just the lack of actually seeing their tests? Or are we referring more to their usually dismal consumables testing (except for sunscreen and bugspray, their testing for cleaning stuff is indeed terrible I will admit)?
As a person that had personally used all of the Top 3 brands, they all work extremely well. Tide if you can afford it is excellent. Gain is my current msin use when Tide isnt on sale and arm and hammer is fantastic as well.
When I was working as a diesel mechanic we used Tide to clean out the cooling system of oil when the oil cooler leaked oil into the cooling system. We tried many different detergents but only Tide would clean out the system good enough. It did take much time and water to clean but it was easer and much less expensive than removing the radiator and disassembling the engine. Tide is definitely my go to for cleaning clothes, engines and radiators. 🙂
That washer is by far the best design washer in the last 50 years. It still reigns King. I would take a 20 year old one of those over a new front loading high efficiency any day.
@@007nadineL My 4.7cf 2020 LG does a better job than my 1988 whirlpool agitator ever did. FLs made a bad impression in the USA market because until the past ten years or so, they were small enough (4cf or less) that an average "big load" filled the whole drum almost, meaning there was no room for water/detergent to circulate, and no room for the clothes to tumble into themselves (which provides the agitation). People were also not told how important it is to KEEP THE DOOR OPEN WHEN NOT IN USE! And running a hot bleach load once or twice a month helps clean everything in general. My gasket is flawless after four years of absolute hell. Anyway tldr old front loaders were too small for the US market until semi recently and they run like shit when they're too full. If you don't overfill, they will work better than an agitator due to removing more water from the clothes during spin cycle, exchanging the water from them more effectively.
Pro tip, you can turn a small dial inside the top cover to allow more water into the front washers. Mine now fills up almost halfway up the glass and does a much better job at washing.
Love the video....Partial to Tide. However...When I was first married, I caught my mom using a bucket to clean some rags. She and my wife had been cleaning a house we had just purchased. She rinsed the rags with the sprayer from our garden hose. Filled the 5 gallon bucket half way, chucked in the dirty rags with healthy glug of Lestoil. Finished filling the bucket and stirred it with a stick every 15 mins for an hour. Dumped the water out, threw the rags in our washer with a tiny bit of Tide and they came out amazing. I use Lestoil on everything but axel grease.
Agreed. I used to use Tide, but tried Arm & Hammer after balking at thr cost of Tide. Have not regretted it since. For heavy stains, a little pre treatment works wonders.
Same here. Been using Arm & Hammer for at least the last 20 years. However I don’t use the measuring cup. I use the TLAR method. My clothes get clean and I don’t stink so it’s a win. 😅
If you’re thinking about testing something, trust me, we’re here for it and there’s never gonna be a video you put out that we don’t watch and want. Love the thumbnail!
My wife wants a stain remover video as well. She would really like you to try Carbona, Fels Naphtha, Lestoil and Dawn dishwashing liquid. My wife never uses cold water. She says it doesn’t really clean clothes.
Good video. Very interesting. I think that you already did a video on degreasers. I would be curious to know how they would perform in the same test; i.e., just pour some degreaser in the washing machine. Also, I would be interested to know if any of the spot remover products are any good at removing these stains.
My wife always goes for expensive ones. Anything on the subject I said to her was not going to convince her. Once I saw this video, the first thing I thought was asking her to come over and have a look. Very useful video for her to understand how to select detergent cost-effectively.

Who knew laundry detergents could be so dramatic? I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see if the Tide Pods would defeat the mighty gear oil. It was like the World Cup of stains!
Thanks for sharing!

Way better than soccer.
The best thing for gear oil, or any other oil is ammonia. I stank up 3 loads of laundry one time when I got a little gear oil from the foot of my boat. The ammonia took that smell, and stain right out.
My wife said “I’d absolutely love to see a stain remover comparison since I’ve not found a good one yet.”
best stain remover I've found so far is dawn power wash. even takes out old stains.
@@hoodrichallstarThanks for the tip! I'm willing to try anything at this point.
I saw a comparison on another channel and what beat all the store brands was plain old hydrogen peroxide with about 20% Dawn dish soap in it.

Fels naptha bars!! That and dawn. Fels can be rubbed directly on stain. Or you can grate it with a cheese grater and sprinkle into washing machine.
Great video and comparison per usual. As someone with severely sensitive skin I would really like to see a follow up with free and clear/sensitive skin options.
I am a maintenance mechanic in a foundry, and my charcoal shirts still look good while the others are destroyed.
Our gardener's clothing is baked-in-green
Although my clothes only get gross through multiple hobbies (carpentry/construction, landscaping, auto mech/tech, Mexican food, etc.), I couldn't agree more. Blacks fade badly through tough washes and whites end up looking like a homeless guy used my shirt as his perpetual catch rag/shelter blanket. So, greys (grays?) have become my go-to t-shirt color because they hold up a LOT better than every other color. The only problem is trying to coordinate them with shorts/pants. Thankfully, there is Costco, where I can afford to just buy one of everything.
I love to wear black but they definitely fade bad, even with woolite.
Likewise I work in an industry with a lot of similar issues and own dozens of identical dark gray shirts and jeans. I look like I wear the same clothes every day. But it absolutely prevents stains from showing up and it's all easily replaced if it gets too damaged. I love not having to think about what I wear.
Omg yes. Laundry detergent is so expensive. Now we can really know which is best!
Very expensive indeed! Thank you
Thankfully almost always the cheapest brands powders outperform the others. At least since many years in german institute testing. Stiftung Warentest
Tide will become more expensive after this video.
@@ibrax5 Priced well beyond sense .
Tide and Gain are foul odors.
I used to use white vinegar in the old Downy ball to make sure the dye on my new cotton clothing was set. It worked compared to when I didn't do that, but I still have no idea why.
I'll vouch for the vinegar, I just put it in the softener side, way cheaper than softener, helps rinse out the soap, helps with smells.
Thanks for the info!
You left out Tide simply clean and fresh in this line up. Can you do a tide red against tide yellow clean off?
I have been a mechanic/fabricator all my life and my wife has tried every detergent under the sun to keep my clothes clean, settling on Tide eventually. Guess she picked a winner!
Tell her to pretreat the stains with Goop. I've been using it for 40 years on my husband's oily stains.
Thanks for the feedback.
Try tide hygienic. I'm a construction equipment mechanic and it seems to work amazing on all of my oil and grease stains!
I use arm and hammer. With a lil dawn dish soap and a splash of Awesome cleaner. Seems to get about anything out I've tried.
As a user of Arm & Hammer for years, this pleases me.
Arm and Hammer is the laundry detergent I have also used for several years. It is the least expensive jug at my local grocery store. Seeing how it performed in this test makes me feel so much better about buying it. I have also used Gain, but it is more expensive and I don't care for the fragrance.

While I find your results fascinating I would like to add a few caveats. First you should have done a rub test on each product. Every detergent calls for product to be added directly to stains for pretreatment.
Also, you used a tub basin. Next time use a front loader that cleans better and are sometimes more difficult for pods.

Wow, thank you!
BTW @Projectfarm love your work, keep it up, I have used your hard work in making many decisions! Than you!!

Dawn as a pretreater works well.
I did that, and was left with a stain of the friggin dye in the detergent....

Something about it just seems right, right? I knew my laundry soap was good stuff!
The comparison would be very subjective, but we trust Todd, he’d do the best he could
Thanks for the suggestion.
Brighteners are another gimmick. I guess they leave a chemical residue to help reflect more light instead of cleaning
Only the Boomer Generation would come up with an idea so insane as "Poison ourselves and two generations of our children to make our laundry 'soft' and smelling like cheap, migraine-inducing artificial fragrances" 🤢.
Wait, isn't softness something you feel? How that the fabric softeners only make things feel soft without them being soft?

Pre-treat a heavy stain with Wisk liquid : )
YOU'RE WELCOME!
Try Shout. Shout beat up Dutch bicycle tires stains from an Amsterdam gutter on my wife's scarf. Actually, Todd should test Shout against Wisk.
This! Also, I find the Tide powder better than Tide liquid. Wish that had been the tested version.
Tide powder vs liquid? Which?
We buy liquid tide and use 1oz per load regardless of its size and have for a very long time. We have not noticed any change. The savings is huge as a couple of bottles will last a person a year. The big bottles that have 150 to 170 oz in them will give you 3 loads a week for a single bottle a year.
Consider trying it for a while and quit over using the soap. You do know the same soap sold a decade ago had small amounts. They increased the size so that you waste more soap and spend more money.
My grandmother couldn't use Tide because she would have an allergic reaction to clothes washed with Tide.
The fact that plain water beats expensive product is a huge insult to the advertisement market.

@@007nadineLI think the new ones have some advanced technology to allow the washing to be more thorough

Do you think it did much good, don’t say anything if you know what’s good for you !!!
