First saw Heart in 1979. Nobody in those days cared if you were a guy or a girl, if you could rock. Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, Suzie Quattro, Grace Slick, Patti Smith, and of course Janice Joplin were at the top of 70s rock and deservedly so. But of them all, Nancy and Annie persevered and remained relevant for far longer. There are few voices as powerful, precise, and pretty as Annie Wilson.

My Uncle was a roadie with Heart. Traveled with the band for a number of years.. He loved music, worked to make enough to go to whatever concert he wanted. He never married, just a bit of a lost soul in his younger years, did some time in the slammer. He was 10 years older than me born in 1958. But he lived for this stuff. He recently passed of lung cancer. He was just 63. But he did life on his own terms.

I’m 65, lots of people including me became fans with the first album, did not seem to matter that the 2 sisters were essentially the leaders, they can rock, the drummer is awesome on this song too. Has similar tone to John Bonham of Zeppelin. I’ve seen Heart once in concert & lead singer Ann Wilson in her own band as recently as about 4 years ago, good stuff.

I saw them live in Charlotte, NC around 1980 when they were one of the opening acts for KISS. One of the best concerts of my life. STYX opened the concert. I had heard their music on the radio, but I did not know that Styx sang them. We were blown away by their performance. Then HEART came on next. I had heard several of their songs, but WOW. Blown away again. I have been a fan of STYX & HEART ever since that day. When KISS finally came on, we didn't even listen to the entire first song. We walked out knowing that it couldn't get any better than what we had already witnessed. We had been introduced to two great bands that night, Styx & Heart!!

I'm an original 1976 Heart fan. No one thought anything about the fact that they were women because they were just so original and good and that in itself took our breath away. Also, the guys in the band had strength, so it wasn't like they went unnoticed. Anything but. I saw them and met them several times starting with my first Heart concert in October of 1978 at the New Haven Coliseum for the Dog & Butterfly tour.

Saw/heard them live right about this time (77 or 78) when I was working as backstage security at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. They were LOUD but note-perfect on stage, but also super nice people off stage. The dressing rooms were a group of trailers in a square. It was their drummer's birthday, so they invited all the security to stick around with them for cake and beer! If no one mentioned it, they were big from their first disc (Dreamboat Annie), which was on a small Canadian record label named Mushroom, out of Vancouver, where they'd come to play and such. When they got out of that deal and went major, the other albums were all HUGE. This song is a dis track about the record label exec who promoted a rumour that Ann (guitarist) and Nancy (vocalist) were sisters/lesbian lovers (the cover of one album was them from the bare shoulders up, standing back-to-back. The band later imploded, thanks to a combination of band romances going bad, and the sisters wanting more say into songwriting and such. The sisters kept the band name and kept going. The 80s were more power ballads and covers written for them, so kinda bland. Even they said it was the only way they could still get records released. probably their best from this era was Dog And Butterfly, which was more their songwriting etc. They performed Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Awards show for Led Zeppelin, and had the original band in tears and standing to clap for their performance. GREAT video to check out if you get the chance. And the drummer in it is the son of Zep's original and long-deceased drummer.

They were known for being a killer live show in the late 70s/80s/90s. In the 70s Heart was viewed pretty much like other hard rock bands of the time like Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, etc. In the 80s they went hair metal and did a lot of power ballads and they kind of became a chick band -- still great but they had a few more love songs going at that time. Ann Wilson (the singer) is widely know n as the best female hard rock singer ever.

My husband and I were fortunate to attend a Heart concert in 2010. Ann Wilson’s voice as AMAZING as ever, and her sister Nancy has actually become one of my FAVORITE guitarists.
Heart and the Wilson sisters are actually from near where we live - they’re based in Seattle, Washington State… so I guess I also feel a kind of “home town pride” for them, like you would for your local sports teams.😉(I’m also told that Ann and I are “twins” of a sort - we look alike - which I think is kinda funny, given that Ann and Nancy don’t look alike at all!)
…I watched some interviews recently (with Ann mostly but also Nancy) where they talked about the challenges of being women in their role, back in those days, and how things have changed/improved. I don’t think they ever had an issue with public acceptance, because talent speaks for itself and good music is just good music.

Thanks for keeping it alive for more generations to come!! Much Love!

I think the distinction can be made that men dominated rock music in the early years. They were a pre cursor to a bunch of female fronted bands that were about to it in the next few years - New Wave and Punk Period - 77-81. Try the iconic PRETENDERS with Chrissie Hynde - anything from the first album is considered gold - such as "TATTOOED LOVE BOYS' that has a video - live performance type - and it kicks ass all over the place for women fronted cool chick bands.

Just ran across this. I grew up in the Seattle suburbs, they did in Bellevue, east of Seattle. Just before they became well known in the US, they came back to some club dates in Seattle. They were already known fairly well in British Columbia, Canada, above Washington. We were still in high school, but had been hearing a major buzz about "these two chicks from Bellevue who sound like Led Zep." They were already known as an excellent Zep cover band. We milled around the outside of a club they were playing at in North Seattle, trying to bribe the bouncer to keep the front door open so we could here them better, too young to get in. A year later thier debut album came out, but I'd just graduated & joined the Army. Sent to Germany, I didn't get to see them until '79, but the wait was worth it. I've seen them several times after that.

I think I was likely at the same concert. We were about to move from Greece down to Florida. I saw them live 5 times from 77-83. Always a wild show.

First of all, you can tell in this video that the visuals don't always match the audio. That's because while the footage in that video is of a live performance, the sound was of the actual studio recording from the album. There is a version of that video on TH-cam with the real audio of the live performance.
I've been a fan of Heart since their first album was released in the States in the summer of '76 (it was released in Canada the year before). I was only 10 years old at the time. Saw them live for the first time in late '82. They were in a bit of a down turn in their career at that time, but the concert was great. Then I saw them live a second time in '87 in the height of their comeback period that started in '85. The general audience age dropped greatly in that time. I was in my senior year in high school for the '82 concert, and everyone was generally much older than me and my date (the first date with a girl who would become my wife 13 years later - and still with her to this day). I was in college for the '87 concert, and everyone was noticeably younger. While the performance was great, it wasn't the same. They stuck just with the hits. Mostly from the last two recent-at-the-time "hit" albums, and when they did play the older songs, it was only the charted hit songs, and they seemed to run through them as fast as they could. For the '82 concert, they played more of the deeper album cuts - songs that were fan favorites but not necessarily one of the "hits". That was something they would come back to more since the early 2000s.
