Ann Wilson is one of the greatest rock singers of all time. 1970s Heart was an absolute force to be reckoned with.

  • @Cadinho93

The lead guitarist is Roger Fisher, whose brother Mike is the "Magic Man" that Ann is singing about.
Also, the talented Wilson sisters get most of the credit, which they should, but the men in the original lineup were also factors in the band's success. Super talented group.

He never got credit, but he was definitely an original lead player. Odd combination of notes between his scales and harmonics.

"Dog and Butterfly" is another example of the softer side of Heart. They loved the folkier side of Zeppelin as much as they did the powerful side, and Heart could do both, sometimes in the same song.

Fun fact, I lived across the street from Ann in 1979-80 in Kirkland, Wa. I was in love with Nancy back then. Dog and Butterfly like others have said, Ann’s voice is actually velvet in that one.

I'm a little younger than you but grew up in Marin county knowing Mickey Hart's nieces, hanging out at Deen Castronovo's house via being friends with his stepdaughter, running into Santana, guys from Metallica, going into Phil lesch's restaurant often enough later on that he and his wife would usually stop by to talk to me. Used to hear Metallica rehearsing the Black album across from my childhood soccer field during practice. I never fully appreciated how special these things were until I was a bit older

I saw these ladies 47 years ago. It was my first actual concert in an arena, a small 2,500 seat one, the others being in bars. Great show.
Crazy on You from the same time frame, '77 - '78, there's a great live video with Nancy's longer acoustic intro that's epic.

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🎩🎩 ... wooooo -- hoooooo !! Yes , indeed - I knew this would Rock your world. I personally think Ann has the best female Rock voice of all time. Of course .. she can soften it up and melt me like butter .. you will get requests for her softer side. I never tire of this song ... or any Heart song. Nancy also crushes the guitar on every song .. I saw them live recently and the raised the roof .. they were hot .. the crowd went nuts .. and we all sang every song. Keep these Heart songs coming Stacey . Luvvvvvvvvvv to see you smile at Heart wailing singing .. and echoing guitars !! This is a great reaction. 🎩🎩🔥🔥🔥

Thank you, Stacey, for noticing how great the entire band was. Heart was far more than just the Wilson sisters. Drums, bass, two lead guitarists (one who doubled on keyboards), Ann on vocals and Nancy on acoustic guitar - including intros.
This is the Heart that I grew up with. Yes, the sisters had bigger hits during the 80s, but the original band created better music, as far as I'm concerned.
I first saw them about 1975, way back when they were hired to play one of our high school dances. As a young musician, I was mesmerised by them all. Their music was a mix of Rock with R&B and strong dose of Folk, all heavily influenced by Led Zeppelin. At that time, they lived in my native Vancouver, Canada, and I caught their shows as many times as I could - roller skating rinks, free shows in the city parks, even the clubs I could fake my way into (I had a full beard at 12). I saw them so many times the band began to recognise me. We were never friends nor hung out together but they knew me enough to smile and wave.
The last time I saw them was August 1978, when they were the last band at a day long outdoor stadium show. It had been a blistering hot day but the sunset and the breeze off the Pacific brought a cooling relief to us. Behind the stage, across the inlet, the lights from the mountain ski runs lit a peaceful backdrop. My friend and I had been 6th or 7th row all day and we'd just been treated to the sublime harmonies of Little River Band, when it was Heart's turn. They came on stage and it felt like they had finally arrived at the big time to me. Nancy saw me first, smiled and waved, then pointed me out to Ann. Then they played and it was incredible. The light wind, the warm night air, and the music I loved. They played their hits, local and national, a few songs that were their own favourites, and gifted us with songs from their soon to be released new album, Dog And Butterfly. It will be 44 years this coming Summer and these memories are forever burned into my mind. What an incredible band the original Heart was. ♥

Aways loved Heart. Didnt get to see them until the fancy clothes and poofy hair phase in the 80's. Yeah, being a musician, songwriter and vocalist myself, this is one of the bands that I liked listening to and learning how to play their songs as a kid. Ann is a great vocalist with great range and Nancy is a very good vocalist as well. I always did like all the rest of the musicians too; however, they did get overshadowed by the two sisters. The other musicians, I always thought were underrated and overlooked. 1st lead guitar player Roger Fisher, 2nd lead guitar player and keyboardist Howard Lesse. And you were talking about the bass playing Steve Fosson and the drumming Michael Derosier which all of them were very good at their jobs but overlooked. I wasn't much into their songs they did in the mid 80's. They had quite a few hits, however, I still like their older stuff when they rocked out more. This was the reason that the last of the 3 older members had left the band which were Howard Lesse, Steve Fosson and Michael Derosier. They wanted to keep doing the more upbeat rocking type music and the sisters wanted to go in a different direction. I think you did a very good reaction to the song. And you're super pretty as well. Great job! Stacey!

Hands down! Ann Wilson is the GOAT of rock n roll female singers and ranks up high among male rock singers in my book. The bass guitar gives a song it’s bottom sound, it rounds out the song. The best example would be smoke on the water by deep purple.

Great choice for a reaction, one of Heart's best songs. This was Heart at its best, because this was the original line up of members. You're correct- there is a bass in this song being played by Steve Fossen. The guitar solos were played Roger Fisher and Howard Leese, who also played the keyboards.
Nancy Wilson also sings lead vocals on quite a few songs and she also has a very good voice. If you want to hear Nancy sing lead, check out "These Dreams", "Will You Be There In The Morning" , and "Love Mistake." Please continue your Heart journey, you will not be disappointed.

  • @WyteRabit

Heart recorded a cover of the Harry Nilsson song "Without You" on their Magazine album. If you want a GREAT example of the power of Ann Wilson's voice, give that track a listen. In fact, for another really great track off that album, I'd recommend the title song "Magazine".
I'd also like to recommend listening to the studio versions of Heart's music. While the live versions are all pretty good, the acoustics of a live performance are so much harder to control than a studio environment.
To truly appreciate the music the way it was intended, you can't beat the studio (in most cases). Give the studio versions of any of the songs by Heart, Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin songs that you've already reacted to a try and you'll see what I mean. Like Pink Floyd's studio version of "The Great Gig in the Sky", that you reacted to. You listened to the studio version first and, as you said, "it took your breath away".
One of the studio versions from Pink Floyd that I think is a MUST, is "Comfortably Numb". No disrespect to the live performance but the studio version blows the live version out of the water.
NOTE: To be fair, there are some live versions that I think are better than the studio versions. These include the Peter Frampton Comes Alive (Do You Feel Like We Do) and Kiss Alive (pretty much any of the tracks). There are a few others but those two stand out as great "live" albums.

You've done a reaction to "Alone" (studio/m-vid) but would recommend revisiting this in a live performance - specifically Live in Seattle 2002. It's stripped right back with Nancy's backing vocals & acoustic guitar the only support for Anne's voice. Pure brilliance 👌
Anne is also front and center where she should be, not hidden away in the shadows like the label did to her for the original music video.

So cool to see your generation explore music from previous generations. I'm so glad I grew up when I did, and that I was exposed to previous decades of music on the radio. There's a reason that older folks say they're sad for your generation with the music you're subjected to these days, if you can even call it music. They certainly don't make music like they used to before auto tune.

Good to see you rocking out to the Wilson sisters again! Looks like you enjoyed yourself chair-dancing. I know you like Ann’s softer side, but if you want to hear her absolutely let it fly, check out “Black On Black”. Not as well-known as some of their other songs, but a straight-up rocker. Good work-out music, very driving.
Also, you make an excellent point about classic live cuts not using Auto-Tune. That’s not true anymore, of course, live performances started also using Auto-Tune many years ago, too. The technology came into use in studios around the turn of the century. So these live classic rock performances from the 70’s, 80’s, and early 90’s are all the real deal. But keep in mind, those were the years when bands and artists were *expected* to be able to write, play, and sing their own music. Sadly, artists don’t have to be able to do any of that any more, due in part to Auto-Tune.
Always a joy to share your reactions. Don’t forget, Two Steps From Hell, gotta give ‘em a listen. Take care!

One of the other powerhouses in rock and roll of that day was Stevie Nicks, of Fleetwood Mac. A different kind of rock and roll but still rock and roll

Caught you for the first time on the full set of Heart songs. Enjoyed all of them. No question Heart and Ann Wilson were going to be amazing, but so were you. Don’t worry about musical training, you’re engaging and authentic. Great stuff! If you’re looking for another artist from the period with vocal purity and power you should definitely check out Linda Ronstadt.

Base and drum driving the rhythm, guitar solos wailing in any part of a song, good singer(s) with occasional keyboards. You figured out the formula for great 70s rock and roll. You will enjoy these songs for the rest of your life. Your guitar solo faux pax was perfectly timed.

Great '70s band, got a little commercial in the '80s/MTV era, but really talented. Glad the Wilson sisters decided to have a band. Check out their reinvention of Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven at the Kennedy Center honors. Awesome cover, cool audience- President Obama and Michelle grooving along to it.

There's a modern all-female rock band called "Plush" who attempt to emulate Heart by playing Heart covers and similar rock tunes. They of course are not Heart, but its nice to see modern young musicians wanting to keep the Heart and 70's rock vibe going. Other modern rock bands like "The Warning" from Mexico, and "Maneskin" from Italy are another recent example of young people keeping the rock flame burning.

Anne Wilson's vocal talents and stage presence are beyond reproach. But it might surprise you to know that
Heart's only number-one hit, "These Dreams" was actually written and recorded by Nancy on lead vocal. Here she is singing it live and lovely with her sis: th-cam.com/video/8tCC9yxUIdw/w-d-xo.html,

Not to worry about the break. The music came to a total stop for a moment, so in my ears the one solo stopped and another started.
So nice to see you reacting to Heart, such a great band, even in it’s many incarnations but with the Wilson sisters throughout.

You should listen to many hardcore Heart fans favorite song from the Dog and Butterfly Album called Mistral Wind . It is a song only Heart could pull off . Musically , it centers on Nancy's acoustic guitar , which provides the instrumentation for the first couple minutes as her sister tells a story in a subtle , intimate vocal . But then when the full band comes in , Ann lets loose as the storm rages and she finds her strength . Nancy has quoted Mistral Wind as the best Heart song , and when you listen , you will understand why !!!
