Gilles Villeneuve used to keep millions watching F1 races. There was always fun and excitement while he was in track. When he died in that horrific accident I felt like someone of my family had disapeared. R.I.P. Gilles... you will be missed forever
I watched this race from the Mirabaeu hotel in Monaco, I remember the Ferrari not being the quickest car on the track but Gilles made sure not one of the remaing 6 cars to finish the race was going to get past him. RIP Gilles, such a sad loss.
one of the greatest of all time, godly car control - winning races in a poorly handling car. imagine an era with him, senna, piquet, mansell, and prost!!
With all the respect to gilles, he wouldn't have been able to beat driver like prost, senna or piquet on a wdc, in some races he definitely could but over the whole Championship not. Maybe he could have given many problems to Mansell because he was never a driver interested in taking few points home but concentrated on the big prize
I was nine and I watched that GP with my late dad on ABC's Wide World of Sports cause we got the WVNY-22 feed from Plattsburgh, NY here in Montreal, QC. One of my idols with his good friend Guy Lafleur of the Montreal Canadiens.
Giles probably My Favorite F_1 Driver . Maybe Not the Best , (Jim Clark Nikki Lauda) but Fun to watch .Saw him drive at Long Beach ,He Bouced ,Up and Down in the cocpit ,when driving from exitement !
With the money he won in that race, Villeneuve said he would buy a trumpet to play, as this was an instrument he liked!
Gilles impression he made on people at Silverstone, driving the worst McLaren and being in fourth place before a faulty gauge sent him back into the pits. No one else could’ve done that maybe Jim Clark but probably not even him he’s never been race Formula One before he might’ve been the greatest race car driver ever.
Pity that Forghieri and the others at Ferrari didn't stand for him at Imola in 1982, its .the same shitty attitude that they have today when they silence Leclerc when he complains about how awful the technical direction is.
Gilles, Mauro i meccanici la loro felicità. L'eleganza di un'epoca che non c'è più.
Remember seeing this guy race snowmobiles in Wisconsin in the mid 70's he was fearless on ice also.

people rave about Senna's quali ;lap in 88 but Gilles qualified this unwieldy shitbox in 2nd place., Sadly no footage exists for either lap

Unfortunately, Forghieri wasn't at Imola that day (he had a family emergency). Pits was being run by Piccinini.
Thumbnail like from some kind of AI crap video.
