- With the VholdR ContourHD 1080p strapped to my helmet I rode home after a nice session of rowing at De Hunze, Groningen, The Netherlands. When it started raining I was glad that most of my body stayed dry. Only my face got a little bit wet.
Met de VholdR ContourHD 1080p boven op m'n helm ben ik na een roeitraining op m'n roeiclub De Hunze in Groningen naar huis gefietst. Toen het begon te regenen was ik blij dat het merendeel van m'n lichaam droog bleef. Alleen m'n gezicht werd wat nat.

What an advanced system of bike roads! Where I live in Canada most of the locals have no idea of bike paths and many refuse to share the road.

This is a great video for someone like me who is waiting for his Mango Sport. I love seeing how you use it.
The more I watch velomobile videos the more I realize that they are cool because they can ride on bike paths or on the road (due to their speed). Pretty cool.
Very nice, Only we together can win oilmen's interests. I'm from Brazil and ride 30 km per day without any cycling infrastructure on my way but this just makes me more motivated

It sometimes works to overtake cars on the left if they're indicating to make a right turn in front of you.
Route advice: skip the Noorderplantsoen and go left on to the Wilhelminakade , all the way past the Zernike complex.

I do not own a windshield for my velomobile, but you can easily make one from a thin plastic sheet (Lexan for instance) and attach it with velcro. It makes the wind (and a bit of rain) go over your head and helps you to stay dryer. Haven't tried it myself though.
Enough to go camping for two weeks or two months (whatever you want). In 2010 I did a tour of our country. A bit more then 1300 kilometer in 12 days (including 2 'rest days'). You do however want to travel light. It will all fit in the bike, but you don't want to haul everything with you.
The bike comes with a horn and a bell. It also has head and tail lights and indicators. It almost starts to look like a real car (except this one is good for your health). The aerodynamic shape of the bikes is indeed what makes it fast. On the flat 30-35 km/h is easily achieved. Going to 40+ km/h takes just a bit more effort. Downhill you can easily reach 100+ km/h (if the conditions are right, like no cross winds a good surface and straight roads).
Thank you, I I really interested into buying a velomobile. They are expensive, but I saw one second hand for about 1000€, which seemed in good shape. Hopefully I can drive with it in a few weeks, about 40km from my home to work. ;)

Yeah. Car's park there very often, for a short time though, but still. Mostly for loading and unloading. Not a very big problem because speeds are relatively low and it's a short stretch. Dutch drivers are mostly very polite and wait behind you. Just don't give them the chance to overtake (aka, riding in the doorzone).
Need a very loud horn and running lights perhaps? Is part of your extra speed (compared to other cycle traffic) partly attributed to the huge reduction in aero load?

They have a high frequency flicker, but it's only noticeable on video. I think they're LED's. Because of the framerate of the video it shows but to the human eye it's a solid color.

The highest speed I've ever achieved with this bike was 94 km/h, but that was downhill. On the flat you can reach 40-45 km/h with some effort or even 50+ km/h if you have a tailwind. It also depends on the model of velomobile. Some are faster then others.
Mopeds and scooters are also allowed on some cycle paths (not this one by the way), so speed isn't an issue. The problem was... she wasn't looking. At all.
@xlnetwork Ja dat klop niet alleen op uitelijk beordelen want er komen nog heel wat andere dingen bij kijken zoals inderdaat wendbaarheid, gemak enz bij sommige zie je de ketting niet eens dat is wel fijn want dan heb ik geen vuile broek wat ook fijn is al de onderkant niet open is mocht je door een plas rijden dan komt het water niet naar binnen bij sommige zit er een opening aan de zijkant om lucht naar binnen te laten maar ja wat als het regend het is toch wel fijn als je droog zit.

What brand/model and specifications for that velomobile. It seems much faster than others I have seen. Very efficient. Wish everyone owned one of these. If only they could be produces cheaper...

@henk8791 Ja hoor, geen probleem. Sommige moet je alleen niet te hard nemen, anders heb je kans dat je de bodem raakt.
Deze dingen blijven echt te gek, ik wil ook eens 2de hands voor zo'n ding kijken. Alleen in de stad met zo'n ding rijden lijkt mij niet echt prettig rijden. Er zouden apparte fietspaden voor moeten komen, een soort Velopaden die kwa breedte tussen een fietspad en een normale weg zitten, met minder bochten en zover het kan gelijke kruisingen. Wat was je maximale snelheid die je er ooit op hebt behaald? Heb vaker gehoort en gezien dat je er heel hard mee moet kunnen.

@636lover1 When I was in the US last year to participate in ROAM (Roll over America), a 5000 kilometer tour from west to east, I got pulled over a total of 6 times. Yeah... you get used to it.
@MewFushisDad Jup, there's a main switch which can be used to switch on/off power to everything. Lights (interior and exterior), indicators, the horn etc.
As for faith in motorists. Here the are more aware of cyclists, but as you can see at 6:23 you always have to pay attention yourself. She didn't look at all, but she could have seen me (I could see her thought the back passenger window).
Mag ik vragen hoe het voelt aan de rug? Geen pijnen op kasseitjes bijvoorbeeld?

I think at least 10 km/h. Some models even more. Depends on the model of the recumbent and velomobile.
I am curious about the max speed? And, how is it going up and down hills? What's the quality of the lighting for at night? The reason I ask, is that I am looking at starting up a shop that sells recumbent bicycles, trikes, and velomobiles.
Man I feel sorry fr you riding in the rain without full canopy. That being said, I wish I lived in your area because those bike lanes look amazing, and so much bike traffic too! Here in Aus cyclists are considered "cockroaches on wheels" and I had to buy a camera for legal purposes
@FlintF Nee hoor 200 km op een dag fietsen is geen probleem. We kan de afstelling van de stoel belangrijk zijn. Ik heb die van mij recentelijk iets vlakker gezet waardoor ik minder last heb van een slapend zitvlak bij lange ritten.

@europe85hollywood Het rijden in de stad valt op zich mee. Net als op de normale fiets moet je altijd uitkijken. Aparte fietspaden is altijd mooi, maar in de stad blijft het toch vaak bochtjes werk en zo. Rechtuit (waar deze fietsen goed in zijn) doe ik buiten de stad (en kun je lekker doorfietsen). Maximumsnelheid is afhankelijk van soort banden, wegdek en bereider. Denk meer aan kruissnelheid. Bij mij is dit rond de 35 km/h.
De velomobile WAW is ook een mooi ding alleen ook erg laag bij de grond voral de trisled dus als je daar over een drempel gaat is de onderkant aan flarde nog maar even goed rond kijken dus. Persoonlijk vind ik het wel mooi hoor als die dingen een beetje op een power boat lijken voral met die gesloten kap over je hoofd en dan zou ik nog donker getint plastic vizier zetten zodat niemand mijn kop ziet bij autos zie je dat soms ook geblindeerde ramen weet niet of dat wel mag bij dit soort dingen.
Have you sought out a convertible windshield? Or would it make vision problems worse?

@pjotr320 The overtaking maybe wasn't one of the smartest moves, but I figured the car had seen me... the second one I anticipated (correctly) that it wouldn't stop.
As for the route, sometimes I take that route, but as they say in Holland "verandering van spijs doet eten" (changing your habit once every so, make's life more enjoyable).
Btw. I think you mean Velonautic life (instead of live).

@doehri Beoordeel een VM niet alleen op uiterlijk, maar ook op dingen zoals: wendbaarheid, gemak met bv. in-/uitstappen, hoeveel bagageruimte heb je, etc.. De Tri-Sled Avatar SuperVelo zit er iid. mooi uit,maar wat als je nu een drempel tegen komt (die hebben we hier in NL wel). En als het mooi weer kun je bij dat ding de kap niet zomaar even achter in de fiets leggen. Mijn advies: sparen en proefrijden ;-)
Aha... but it has indicators (little amber LED in the front and back). You just can't see them when you're in the bike. ;-)

@morzazeal Ik verontschuldigde mij dat ik eigenlijk op niet op de stoep mag fietsen. Aan de andere kant ga ik niet moeilijk doen door de fiets helemaal eerst op de weg te zetten en dan een paar honderd meter om moet fietsen.

it's an amazing result, considering that the velomobile has got a third wheel, anyway the velomobile it's out of my reach since I haven't got 5000 € right now :-(
Sorry, but these velo's are too big to safely ride in the bike lane in my opinion. They should not be allowed because the bike lane is too narrow.

Ik zou ook best wel een velomobile willen tja alleen de prijs daar hik nog wel een beetje aan in de stad lijkt me het ook niet handig voral niet in rotterdam .
Als ik er een zou kopen dan zou ik de Velomobile Trisled nemen dat is echt een mooi design want dat mis ik nog bij dit soort dingen het design daar zijn ze nog niet echt ver mee vind ik persoon lijk. Verder moeten ze inderdaat heel licht zijn vandaar de prijs en zeker als je er een van bijna voledig koolstof wil.
@Anoukkop Ikzelf niet, maar ik heb wel verhalen gehoord van mensen die van alles en nog wat doen waar je hart van over zou slaan. Wel een paar keer teruggekomen dat het dekseltje ingedeukt was of verkeerd er op zat. Daarom heb ik ook een bewegingsalarm op de fiets (zo'n ding van nog geen tientje). Een soort van waarschuwing: afblijven! Ook wil ik nog een A6'je op het dekseltje stoppen met de tekst: Afblijven, zeer kwetsbaar, etc...
What is the alarm that you used, & where is it available, I've been looking for one & I can't find a good one.
I don't use that alarm anymore. I bought a different one which I ordered on the DealExtreme site (dx.com). There are a number of vibration activated alarms. All around 10 dollars. Take a look there.

Isn't it safer to ride the velomobile on the car road in urban areas? It seemed that the cycle paths were very narrow for the velomobile.
Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. It all depends on the place and time I'm riding. The road where the cars drive can be pretty busy sometimes. On the other hand, when you cycle during rush hour the cycle paths are also busy. So that's when I usually take the road.

The same can be said for a normal bike. Good practice in safe biking is not to put yourself in that position and always have an escape. Riding a bike (or velomobile) in The Netherlands is quite safe.
NO, on a normal bike you sit much higher and others notice you earlier and easier !!

You can buy them like this. Except for the flaming 'paintjob' (it's actually a sticker). That was custom made.
Ok, I'm looking into making my own. 1.Bike, 2.Motor, 3.Cover. The bike and motor and I can assemble and build my self but I fear my fiber-glassing skills are not up to par to attempt the cover yet.
