  • A few movieclips about my trip to Giessen (Germany) with my velomobile (Velox Incendia). Slow climbs and fast downhill's make for a nice combination. Going up was sometimes 7-8 km/h, but downhill was more like 70-80 km/h. My topspeed was 84 km/h. Also the meeting with other velomobileowners and the trip to the center of a nearby town was very pleasant.

    Wow, no oil, no electric, I didn't know human power travel looked this cool! Thanks for posting. I've been investigating velos, but haven't found much information in Michigan [in the States] yet about them.

    Thanks Wilfred!
    I had two small chutes as well, but consider them just as much a nuisance as a good thing. My combined weight of velomobile+rider is low enough that I don't really need them. Still it's good to have them along, they weigh next to nothing and they do take the edge off the speed.
    I think the big chute with long cords are downright dangerous and they are unwieldy because they are very difficult to tow in and have to be thrown out before the speed becomes to high.

    @MewFushisDad The total distance was 975 km in six days. On the way to Giessen we cycled 3 days and covered 497 km. In Giessen we cycled 55 in the tour. Back was 423 km in two days (the last day @twilwel and I did 285 km).

    My bike is pretty stable at high speeds. Just don't make any sudden moves ;-). I don't have / need a parachute. Btw. you can just retract them a low speeds. I don't know the average speed of this trip, but it's certainly above 25 km/h. A VM (velomobile) is great for covering large distances on open stretches of roads. It's also very practical and of course fun to do.

    @xlnetwork I've talked to two other friends interested in seeing you all. Sounds fantastic. ...next door neighbor worries though about over heating inside the velomobile... Look forward to meeting you all either in Chicago or outside South Bend...

    Me and @twilwel (H@rry) left from Groningen (the north of the Netherlands). About 2/3 we picked up another rider and stayed for the night in Varsseveld (close to the border). From there we rode with about 20 VM's to Germany. I didn't have a chute, but they worked well. A Quest is a bit more aerodynamic at high speeds, also most of them had faster tires.

    @Schufa100 Normaly I cruise around 30-35 km/h, average speed depends on a number of factors: total distance, road surface, city or wide open landscape, etc. The wind has little effect. Last weekend it was storming. With a head wind I was still able to do about 30 km/h (but I had to work a bit harder). Average is mostly around 27-29 km/h.

    Those are two red parachutes to help the bike slow down during a decent. Not necessary if you're a light rider (like me), but it helps.

    Most velomobiles have front wheel steering. The Velayo is the only rear wheeled VM I know of. Turning radius differs from model to model and the tires you mount (bigger tires = bigger radius). Mostly somewhere between 8 and 12 meters. Also suspention is standard on most VMs, but not all. The WAW and Evo K don't have (rear) suspention for instance.

    That was wonderful. To ride with so many Velonauts would be a delight.
    How many were in your group riding from Assen and there abouts?
    Lots of drogue chutes. How effective are those chutes?
    Crystal clear video. What type of camera?
    Many Thanks for the great video.

    @scrillah81 This is a video made in Germany on the way (home) from Giessen (there was a velomobile meeting there). Mine costs almost 7000 euro's (the full body stickers were expensive).

    I just watched it a second time. What was the total distance? I was looking at a map on line and am guessing about 300 km one way.
    Again, excellent video.

    Excellent video! I ride a normal bike and I get a little worried about the stability of the bike at speeds beyond 30 kph. How stable is you velo at 84kph? The parachutes are a means of saving your brake pads I assume. Are they easily deployed? Do you need to stop to retract them? Lot of of questions but one final one. Did you calculate your average speed over the trip. Are velos better at getting from A to B than normal bikes or is it just the fun of going downhill at speed?
    Again Great Video.

  • @wilfredktlr
    @wilfredktlr  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @pseudotruth The discbrakes can get quite hot. I'm not that heavy (only 60 kg) so... and I have open wheel arces (that helps). Also I didn't have a parachute, again because of my low weight. Others did have them (especialy heavier riders with a Quest velomobile).

  • @maratgetmanchuk
    @maratgetmanchuk 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the video!
    Are all velomobiles steered by the front wheel? What is the min. turning radius? Anbd is there suspension?

  • @wilfredktlr
    @wilfredktlr  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @dawnous There's no engine in there, if that's what you mean. It's all leg powered. I don't know which parts of the video you're referring to, but if I'm going downhill I don't have to pedal (duh). On a fast downhill (say 60 to 70+ km/h) I can't keep up pedaling because the cadence is to high. Hope that clears things up.

  • @wilfredktlr
    @wilfredktlr  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @SaintG3 I the maximum speed I'm going is 84 km/h (at peak). I don't know what the speed limits are on the way down but in our country (The Netherlands) there is no speed limit for bikes. In Germany (where the footage was taken) I don't know about these rules. Anyway, I feel I wasn't putting anyone at risk. Also I didn't want to crash my bike, so I braked for every corner and dangerous point.

    Hi.
    I have one question. Once, I had the ability to drive in a Quest. Although it was just around my neighbourhood, I enjoyed it. I am thinking of buying one, but I noticed I couldn't really "trust" the steering. It seems pretty odd driving with a joystick like system. How do you anticipate and learn that?
    Thanks in advance,
    Maarten

    Yes, they are retractable.

    Do you know much about the sinner mango sport velemobile and red addition?
    I am just curious, because from the video's I have seen the taillite looks a bit small is it visible enough at night?
    I would like to get one when I can afford it so just asking.

    LOL @10:56! That white aerodynamic velo is going too fast and about to break the sound barrier that it needs the mini parachutes to slow down!

    @GuyFawkes40 Wow! Apparently you know every recumbent rider and their legs. For the record, who says we are all long duration riders of maybe the person you saw just bought his bike. I don't think you can put a label on all recumbent rider based on a video you saw on TH-cam.

    @ahaayman De eerste keer is het wel wat spannend. Hoe reageert de fiets, hoe reageer jij... maar daarna is het super leuk. Hoe hard kan ik? Alleen in de regen doet het wel wat pijn als je met dik 70+ km/h druppels in je gezicht krijgt. Oplossing: een helm met visier... maar die had ik bewust thuis gelaten.

    @c33r0k33 No problem. If you want to you can meet me (and a number of other velonauts) around August 17th. That's when we'll be rolling around Chicago. Check out the rolloveramerica.eu website for more information.

    @GuyFawkes40 Scrawny legs? I'm a 20 year certified massage therapist. Long duration exercise does not waste muscle tissue as long as it is combined with proper rest and nutrition. Some of those so called scrawny legs rode across the United States this past Summer in the very machines you see in this video, averaging 125 miles a day. I ride a Velomobile. 13,800 + miles in the last two years. 27" thighs and 18" calfs. I'm 6' tall with a 34" waste and weigh 220 lbs.

    @KrunchyJD A have friends who own a Mango Sport and a Red Edition (RE). The Sport is a bit lighter (can been seen in the video in white / gray) and quite basic. The RE is the same but has some more accessories like lighting etc. Take a look at: ligfietsgaragegroningen.nl
    The taiillight looks small but gives enough light to be seen in the dark. Also I have a second light (just above the first one) that's for breaking and can also be used as a fog light.
