I was thinking the exact same thing. Marty's reaction times were dead on, but mechanical stigs....I mean, I thought he spent a lot of his free time at the drag strip with his other subarus? He was really sleeping on the tree.
Actually I don't think it was reaction time but the car bogging down.

How is the car with 300 horse and AWD launching fine but the car with 600+ horse and AWD bogging? I get that it's heavier but it's not that much heavier.
Pretty sure he has electronic trans so he could shut off the front wheel drive if he wanted to launch easier, he's kinda giving up the starts anyways.
Taller gears, more weight and it's a high revving v8 so it's not a torque monster like the 'muricans fit on their swaps.

I've got to say that both those cars are bloody impressive, well done to both of you.
The R34 fron on the Stagea looks shit loads better than the standard one, there is one around the corner and I want to ram it every time I see it as it's so ugly, then buy him an R34 front and fit it for him but sadly, I can't afford to do that.

STAG162 My car is completely mod plated and compliant.. still doesn't stop the complete harassment from the police because I don't drive a Toyota Camry.
After showing them my mod plates what to do they do ? Hit me with a car inspection and emissions notice. The police have WAY too much power, If I show them an engineers certificate that should be the end of it like any other country.
Not here though.

Australia is cool, a lot of other countries regulate mods like you wouldn't believe and not to mention charge you more money to insure/register. As long as you aren't a tool and don't have stupid/silly mods you she'll be right ;)

It's about effing time! MCM did a great series on the Double Unicorn build and then the story just died without doing anything more after the dynamometer runs. It's great to see that the Stagea can roll it's tires down the strip too. Great race !
Super gramps is one of my favorite builds mcm has ever done. I’m a big fan of fast wagons, and this one ticks all the boxes.
Lads... prob too many comments here for you to get this but throwing it out there anyway. I watched every episode up to supergramps original demise in the rain, then last track of what was happening because, well you know, life. just had the maddest binge session for the last week and caught up (video for video mcm and mcm2 as uploaded) to this particular video... man... i left off because i thought you had lost the reason why you started but since watching the build on ms. daisy, supergramps revival, s2000 nos, and now this I'm flekkin impressed. you've brought the 15yo kid out in me. I've gone from v8 guy to turbo xr6 dude to datsun and back again.... and double unicorn has just ticked EVERY box. Few more episodes to get through yet but sleep is understated. I've actually given up my job in the mines and decided to get back into cars because of this. THIS SHIT MAKES ME HAPPY. U MAKE ME WANT EAT TOFU.

Well you can time their times about from the video with your phone etc.
Because Turbo Gramps was supposed to be an 11 second car, but then they rebuilt it in and episode and then didn't tell us the times...
I can't get over how evenly matched those cars are despite the hp/weight differences. Both are incredibly well built and it was just bad luck Benny had some issues. the 3rd round would've been epic. Hope to see a rematch in the future.

We were going old school, it's more fun and less about the calculators and spreadsheet owners amongst us.
That is all fair, but i would also like to know what time these cars are pushing just for curiosity sake.

If you know the numbers it starts becoming a dick measuring contest... "Oh, this only does a 12 second QTR Mile time? My stock _________ does that no problem. Blah blah blah." When you get the numbers it creates an artificial scale and the car is solely judged on those few numbers which I think is really lame. You become more obsessed with what the car is running rather than the car itself. Just enjoy the cars!

If you're going for times then reaction time doesn't matter, I would guess that Mechanical Stig is more used to getting times than racing, but it's just a guess.

He wasn't giving it full beans as he had to drive the car back home not trailer it. Also it's not running at full potential as he still using the factory fuel pump which it running maxed out.. Once it's done he can push it harder his aim is 600hp for it
FOR THE RECORD! the stagea DIDNT have the better fuel pump installed (I asked benny) AND the stagea was STILL in 2WD! Please like this comment to let others know!

Super Gramps has to be one of the best sounding street Subarus getting around, damn. We need more raw audio, mount mics near the exhaust for races like this because I want to hear both cars roar damn it!

Too bad the MCM and Roadkill thing is never going to happen. Since Supergramps is sort of a "do all" vehicle, it would be cool to see Roadkill put the Muscle Truck up against it. Would be fun to watch.

if you look at the first race it seems that they had a perfect race and both very close so it just madders about not bogging and getting the shifts bang on.

Probably cause they're unimpressively slow and all the mystique and wonder would be lost. That's what I've always guessed anyhow.
It takes some INSANE times to look good on the internet, we are all used to seeing 10, 9, and 8 second cars online, these would sound slow. Just like when they raced nearly stock roadsters (miata and s2k), times don't matter, its having fun, and you can do that even at 16 seconds with a close rival.
Well if you bothered to watch all the supergramps stuff it got to 11's I think. So both are capable of doing that
OK here goes:
Double Unicorn: Reaction time 0.598, 1/4 Mile: 12.196
Supergramps: Reaction Time: 0.225, 1/4 Mile: 12.597
That means even taking into consideration the botched launch by the Stagea, it still won.
Bear in mind he's still only running one fuel pump so there's a bit more to give in the rematch, so unless Marty pulls something out of his arse, he's toast in the next run.

Those two were soooo close! Not adding that second fuel pump may be limiting the Double Unicorn, but it really made for an exciting race against Super Gramps! That sucks you didn't get the third race in.

Double Unicorn. If you're gonna have a ridiculous yet somehow also practical wagon, may as well go all the way with the V8 and two stage turbo. Plus I prefer the looks of the Stagea as well.

I wonder what's the weight difference. for a turbo v8 on e85 it's not that impressive.
wikipedia says its 20kg (Subie 1600kg and Stegea 1620kg) which in fact shouldn't make this big of a difference at those power levels, althought v8 prolly adds more weight to Stegea. Not 100% sure if wiki is correct of course.
Iirc the Stagea is several 100 lbs heavier. They do mention it in one of the episodes. That Subie wagon is incredibly light for how large it is.
Niether has the standard engine and drive train so will be heavier than what wiki says.
Double Unicorn is very close to 2000kg. She isn't light, that's why Gramps can keep up so effectively.
And they said, the gearing in the Stagea is longer, which is why they're pretty evenly matched over the quarter despite Double Unicorn's extra power. With the Stagea reeling Supergramps in towards the end, if the race was longer the Stagea would win every time.
Not a Stagea fanboi or anything - I love both cars - just defending the charge that the Stagea isn't that impressive. I watched the series and the work they did on it and I can tell you it's mightily impressive.

I'm currently fixing up a 1973 Mercury Colony Park station wagon in my garage. 19 feet long, green with fake wood siding, and a 7.5L V8 under the hood. The ultimate Gramps wagon. Now I've just got to make it faster than these, which will be tough with 4700 lbs and rwd only.

The VW was running a flat 4 engine off a Subaru, coupled with a light frame made it a serious workhorse.
VWs are generally pretty shit unless you've worked a GTI.
I love the TDI golfs. They really do pull. But German cars are kind of a pig to work on and are very over complex. I wouldn't own one unless i was a more proficient technician or had money to burn for dealership visits.

The Stagea double unicorn is one hell of a build. I've just watched through the series on creating it and it's just awesome, I know Ben and Alan are professionals and have some specialist skills that a lot of home builders may not have but it really shows what can be done with some thought and attention to detail. With the double fuel pump set-up I reckon there must be a decent chunk more power to come and with a built engine I reckon it could be pushing some built Skylines for power. With all that V8 torque to haul it off the line and the turbo power I reckon that grey wagon is going to be giving a lot of people nightmares down the strip. It sounds fantastic too. The saying "there's no substitute for cubes" may not be technically true, but more cylinders and more cubes certainly doesn't hurt any...
Looking forward to seeing the new fuel pump setup. I reckon 500whp is well within sight.

Is Australia as bad as New Zealand for getting cars with manual gearbox. Almost every car in NZ is automatic, it really takes the fun out of driving. My girlfriend drives a BMW Z3 convertible, automatic... Even when you hit the 'Sport' button, it just doesn't feel right.

Been waiting for this for TOO long
At 5:24 Marty called his Subaru "naturally aspirated". Last time I checked, that meant that a car does not have a turbo or super charger and his Subi does have a turbo.
The 3.6 in his car only comes N/A, these is no turbo kit or upgradable parts. The Engine is designed to be Naturally Aspirated so essentially they bolted on a turbo to an N/A engine and tuned it properly, Thats why he says the car is only running 6-8 psi, which is a very conservative tune.
I understand that the car was originally N/A and that they did not use a kit to install the turbo, but by definition, the moment that turbo started to make boost the engine was no longer N/A.
Yes mate, congrats, we all understand that. The block is an NA spec block, as alluded to both both Marty himself and Lucas above. This means the block is *not* designed to withstand turbocharging, as opposed to one that *is* designed to withstand it and will generally have higher grade internal parts and a lower static compression ratio to achieve this.
I gotta say: that's _way_ closer than I thought I should have been a couple of months ago. Also: If and when I get a wagon, I want it (or, even better, will make it) do this.

Heres is what I think will happen next time. The stagea will be running E85 with its dual pumps. Gramps will have either a new motor or the same motor but built. Thats what they have said on old episodes so that is what I am going by.
