Mat's lining up in the classic Honda Civic Type R, alongside the new MINI GP, the Hyundai i30 N, and a Mountune-tuned Ford Focus ST!
So how about the specs? Well, all four cars are packing a 2-litre turbocharged petrol under their bonnets, and while the Focus ST can produce the most power at 330hp, it's the i30 N that can produce the most torque with a total of 550Nm! As for the MINI, well it'll only produce 306hp - the lowest of any competitor here today. But it does have one advantage... it's the only automatic!
So will the automatic gearbox, coupled with its lightweight, see it leave the field for dead? There's only one way to find out... LET'S RACE!

That Mini took me by surprise. I knew my favourite(i30N) was not going to win, but I certainly did not expect it to be last. I am gutted. Bearing in mind I raced a motorbike up the motorway and I kept up with it(was a 650).

@@cammy484 buddy, I’m in the motor Trade , and I’ve got that Mini as my weekend toy, and I can tell you now it’s probably one of the fastest cars I’ve driven of that type .
I had a GR Yaris , and that Mini would gobble up for breakfast.
In fact, the wife pointed out, I seem to drive that GP3 like I’ve got extra lives lol

Loved my old Focus ST-3 back in 2007 with the few engine mods to it's 2.5L power plant. It was a heavy beast of a car. Still prefer the old shape and split exhaust than the ST today. Glad Ford is still running with it alongside the RS version.

Somewhat of a Honda fan but love the GP not only it looks good with the help of that wing but also pretty quick with the help of that robot shifting the gears.
Mini sounded really well even with soft limiter. Focus actually have 2.3 engine not 2.0. Should be similar to Mustangs and Focus RS 2.3

Having owned a Type R I can say it is a hard car to launch well and can be somewhat tricky to change gears from 1st to 2nd and even 2nd to 3rd. With that being said it should have been closer to the mini when driven to it's potential. Hard to get accurate results when you have drivers unfamiliar with a specific car's manual versus a Dual Clutch where all you have to do is apply gas.
If you haven’t driven the mini then I’m not sure how you can gauge the difference, other than what you just saw here lol🤷♂️
@@the___truth8038 I'm not speaking on behalf of the Mini. What I am saying is based off oh how fast the Mini was in the video. I can tell you the Type R wasn't driven to it's full potential. I have no idea if driven better it could beat the Mini, I just know it can do better than what was shown here. If I had to guess I'd say even with a good launch the Mini would start ahead and then both cars would maintain a similar speed.
If you like straight-line performance, the mini is definitely the best. It is also among the fastest fwd hot hatch, tied with the Meganne RS depending on data, but the Civic Type R however, is a lot better on the corners, it is said to feel more 'fun' on track, while also putting out faster lap times. They are honestly both brilliant cars tho. The B48 also has good tuning potential!

@@mrbillcollector Well, I did watch a video on a Honda Civic Type R vs Mini F56 JCW GP and it beat it on track due to the corners, not saying the Mini isn't a cornering machine, but just that the Type R is much better on the corners.

I’ve got a Mini GP and the thing is hilarious. I’m sure the torque is restricted until 3rd gear because it suddenly takes off like a scalded cat. Fast like no mini ever before and goes round corners like a go kart. Bit bumpy but that’s the price you pay for such astonishing grip. Great way to put a smile on your face.
That explains why the track numbers aren't so great. Whyyy BMW!

Thats the issue with Dyno's they don't actually measure power, that is why there is a huge variance between dynos. So I doubt the hyundai actually has 325HP/ 550NM.

The Focus ST has a 2.3L Ecoboost engine and if it didn't have the panoramic sunroof it would be 20kg lighter 👍

Had a Mini JCW manual which was quick but on drag strip my slower auto Cooper S Countryman was 1 sec quicker! That Mini auto box is incredible!
Matt can't shift! Anyway the MINI show's them how it's being done while the exhaust note disappoints. I have had one of the early Cooper-S arriving in the US and later a pre-series Clubman-S from BMW headquarter in Munich. Both I fine tuned their engines and got quite some power out of them. The Clubman hit 155 mph with the rpm in the red. They were always fun to drive.
The driver in the i30N has the reaction time of a stone. ;-)

Chip tuning is a better way to increase performance. Probably a good tuner will ask you more than a chip, but the improvement is on another level

Mini has a classical automatic gearbox with convertissor , not double clutch, and many say its very SLOW and give chance for manual gearbox, but its a 8 and not 6, so it make already a difference; and the real power mesured is 330hp and 510Nm (french " Sport auto"), for me, I am not surprised.
I haven't finished seeing the video yet but the sounding test for me was clearly like this:
1-Mini GP
2-Hyundai i30 N
3-Ford Focus ST
4-Honda Civic Type R
I've driven the GP3 as I work for a MINI dealer and it is rapid. The Clubman JCW also has 306hp but doesn't feel nearly as fast despite having a faster 0-60 time on paper but the Clubman is 4wd so maybe off the line it is, when you are up to speed the GP3 feels like a little rocket ship!

The JCW GP3 does a 13 second 1/4 mile with a trap speed of 110mph... proper fast and can compete with V8 Muscle cars. Also has great handling to match.
Is the N driver shifting gears or staying in 2nd bouncing off the rev limiter the whole way? I have a Veloster N and the Type R doesn’t walk me like this video shows. Is it faster in a straight line? Yes, but not by much.

Honestly, you can't rev out turbo 4cyl like other engines. Once you're at least 1,000-500rpms away from complete redline, shift!! Learned that on my fiesta and other 4 cylinders turbos I've driven. That type r could've done better but the race was pretty accurate.
And yes, you do shift like you're driving a bus lol. Don't be scared to slam those gears! No hate c:

Big turbo running off a notoriously reliable 2.0L 4 cylinder power train, with inexpensive repairs and maintenance, plus a brand new BMW infotainment system. Why do all of you people cry over car brands being owned by BMW? Go cry over Porsche, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Bentley, and Audi all being Volkswagens. Or that Maseratis and Alfa Romeos and Fiats are about as Italian as frozen spaghetti.
As a mazdaspeed3 owner, id also like to see more classic drag races that aren’t new new cars. For example a subaru wrx vs ST vs mazdaspeed vs a mustang gt or something like that. because at the end of the day these are the cars that i’d say a fairly large chunk of your audience is driving or thinking of owning

FYI the B48 bmw engine in the Mini claims 301 hp but it dynos 285-290 whp and actually makes closer to 330 bhp and it only weighs 2700 lbs. BMW performance engines actually are very underrated. That B48 also has the forged internals from the B58 M240 and Supra 3.0, minus 2 cylinders, plus a bigger turbo than the lower trim B48s. Research goes a long way! B48s are starting to get mods and they're making 350+ whp from a downpipe and tune only. I know because my B48 is a development car going through custom tunes with Bm3 before the OTS maps are released.
I'm getting a Mini JCW GP as my next and I'm NOT going to tune it. I drove the GP and it was incredible. I thought the lack of a manual would make it bad but I was WRONG, it is an incredible experience. More like a supercar than a hot hatch.

I'd love to see Rory's face when he dynos his car and realises his race chip only gives him an extra 5 bhp.
Peak power is not so good with the RaceChip, but a lot more hp in the mid range. That is why it pulls hard in the rolling races.
@@baronvonsturz2.011 yeah the boxes do make a difference to the performance but there's no way the race chip is giving him those numbers. Check out dark side developments TH-cam for his tests on all the different boxes his results are the same as everyone else that's done a Dyno video on them.
