    I am glad to see a allopathic doctor talk about diet. Most allopathic doctors just write a prescription cuz they really don't know anything about how the diet and how food affects the body. I'm very happy to see the head of this department talkin about diet. There's Hope for the world.❤❤

    I really like Dr. Leslie Cho, what she said is easy to understand, very knowledgeable, and makes sense. Best of all she understands how people struggle..to do of easily said than done. Like..1lb a week losing weight is so encouraging more than just random saying they need to lose more weight or are too fat. I, myself 70 yrs old weight 115 lbs, but I always have a high cholesterol problem. Now I listen to Dr. Leslie Cho I've learned so much about it and will try to use her method to lower my cholesterol and hope I can keep it up:)) Thanks.

    I am 5’2” have never weighed more than 102 unless I was pregnant and have been highly athletic most of my life. I am genetically predisposed to high cholesterol . MMy current cholesterol is 280 down from over 300. I already have heart blockage but my heart test last month was way better than anyone expected. I am still fit at any age and as a senior with high cholesterol my heart test on a treadmill even got my technicians excited when they saw how great I did. I was literally running on the treadmill even though I had been admitted to the hospital the day before for chest pain. I take my statin faithfully every night ( our bodies make cholesterol while we sleep so it’s better to take it at night.) I am trusting that my memory issues will improve as my cholesterol level gets under control. I dislike taking statin, but I dislike thinking of my lifespan being shortened even more. I plan on seeing my great- grandchildren one day. I already have 3 granddaughters and 1 will graduate from high school in a few years 🎉Life is good and grateful for all the opportunities available for love and happiness and access to good medical providers.

I know it’s a problem. So I will add more vegetables, and oatmeal (which I used to eat more). I also used to not eat meat. I think J will go back to not eating meat because that helped. I still don’t eat a lot.

    Best information i have heard. My dr tried vit b for me but it really did not lower my chol.
    Now on zetia generic version. Have not had a chol retest yet. So we shall see.
    I learned that triglycerides can be lowered easier the cholesterol. Stop eating pretzels, cookies, crackers, breads.
    I do wonder... if cholesterol goes up as we age, why do we not have "scaled levrls" for aging? Meaning, slightly elevated may not be sn issue as we age. However slightly elevated for those who are younger or even pre-menopausal is more problematic. Hope someone answers that for us.

    ***Question please... will lowering your cholesterol help reduce fatty liver syndrome, and gallbladder issues- that is - gall stones? Can “cholesterol” gallstones be eliminated or shrunken by lowering cholesterol? It seems gallstones/fatty liver are so common a problem these days for so many, and I know many would appreciate an answer. My understanding is that if one has fat around their middle, then the internal organs in that area can be dangerously fatty. Thank you. EXELLENT presentation. Clear, concise and so helpful. 👍🏼👍🏼💌Thank you.

    • @rualablhor
      @rualablhor ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think cholesterol itself directly causes fatty liver. That said they could be correlated, of course, like in metabolic syndrome. I'd check hba1c /blood glucose. Visceral fat, as you say, is a big sign...if you get your blood work ie cbc, check your alt/ast levels...they are the liver's health respectively alt>nafld and ast>alcohol related. My liver is fine (both ast and alt near optimal), but my cholesterol is slightly elevated fwiw. Hope that helps😊

    • @ukulelekitten15
      @ukulelekitten15 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rualablhor yes very helpful thank you. I just thought that since most gallstones are made of cholesterol, and since the liver sends (concentrated) bile into the gallbladder, that as you say, there might be a correlation. Thank you for the names of the tests to be screened for. I truly enjoyed your presentation. Well done! May all the great good you are doing for so many, return to you a hundredfold, and God bless & keep you. You’re a gift.

    • @rualablhor
      @rualablhor ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ukulelekitten15 fwiw my cholesterol total is between 200 and 250 yet my ast and alt levels are both under 20 (quite optimal). In addition, my bmi is 20 and body fat is merely 17%, again, quite good. Perhaps I'm in the minority, but obesity (visceral) tends to correlate with fatty liver, yes. But elevated cholesterol (me) doesn't always correspond fatty liver ie alt level AFAIK. Yea, get your cbc (complete blood count) and check the ast and alt levels. If you need further information, get your liver (hepatic) function panel done😊

  • @Daniel-hh8od
    @Daniel-hh8od 2 ปีที่แล้ว +86

    There is no such thing as good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. LDL-c does have the ability to transfer its cholesterol to HDL-c for reverse transport back to the liver. How can we call this bad? In addition, LDL carries 5-8 different forms of Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant, and LDL plays an important role in our immune function. The fact is we need LDL! If LDL is so bad why do we have elderly people in their 90s with high LDLs in the 190s and have no atherosclerosis? They have zero plaque from CAC score of zero. So it's not the LDL that is the bad guy. Correlation is not causation. Also, we need to know what kind of LDL do you have. Do you have large bouyant LDL (healthy & functional) or small/dense LDL (oxidized or nonfunctional) which is the more dangerous type. High LDL Particle Count or LDL-p (LDL particle count, you can get this from your Lipid NMR Test), and small LDL size (from Lipid NMR test) increase your risk for coronary event. You can measure this by checking your Apo B and Lipid NMR. Also, if you are eating low carb, red meat does not necessarily increase your risk for heart disease. Organic Grass-Fed Beef is extremely healthy, and they contain high amount of healthy omega3s. Lastly, it's the damage to the epithelial arterial wall (intima layer) that starts the process of inflammation and plaque deposition. This occurs from 1. High Blood Sugars (Constant & long-term attacks to the epithelial vessel wall by refined carbs and simple sugars, breads, pasta, cereals, cheerios!, fruit juices, cookies, candies, muffins, bagels, sugared drinks, high sugar content from processed foods, HFCS or High Fructose Corn Syrup, Trans Fats & Vegetable and Seed Oils) 2. Smoking, 2nd hand smoke, polluted air. 3. Heavy metal toxicity. (Get your blood tested for heavy metals), 4. Poor Oral Care or Hygeine. Also, dietary cholesterol does not cause heart disease, it's the sugar, the sugar, the sugar!! Metamucil is soluble fiber, so it doesn't work. You need both the soluble and insoluble fiber which comes from whole fruits and vegetables. Low fat, high carb diets, processed & ultra-processed food damages our mitochondria and sets us up for full blown diabetes, fatty liver disease, atherosclerosis and heart disease. If we practice the medicine of yesterday then how can we make the best & most optimal recommendations for our patients to take full control of their health and reverse and prevent heart disease? They simply can't. They need the right info & they need to take the right blood tests. (Apo B, Lp (a), Lipid NMR, fasting lipid panel, fasting Insulin, CMP to get your ALT, normal ALT

      This doctor is very old school in her interpretation of cholesterol. A study was done on people who had died of a heart event and then autopsied. Apparently, there was no correlation between those with high cholesterol and those with low cholesterol. Therefore, cholesterol does not cause cardiovascular events. Her recommendation for food choices are biased towards plant based diets. For purposes of health, a plant based diet is not superior to any other diet as long as sugar and processed foods are avoided or moderated.

    • @mauricecoutanceau2297
      @mauricecoutanceau2297 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Totally agree. I studied medicine from 1971 to 1977 and then practiced for 40 years and it was only after retirement that I found out that pretty much everything we were taught about diet (which was close to zero) was wrong and all based on faulty science (like rabbits force fed on cholesterol and fats) and Ancel Key's cherry picked studies. My wife and I now are conducting seminars on healthy eating, diabetes and unstatinization (if that is a word) hopefully putting big Pharma out of business (not likely). Doctors who give the "advice" as in this video have their head in the sand and are either not interested in finding out the truth, or are in the pockets of big business. Unfortunately the general public (as seen in the comments) find the lie easier to believe than the actual truth.

    My former family physician insisted that my mother should drink soy milk because her estrogen levels were very high. She drank it for a bit, then stopped because she did not like the taste of it. However, her breast cancer spread to her bones, liver, bone marrow, and brain and she died 13 years ago on November 2009.

    What are your thoughts on the various ratios for cholesterol levels? Thanks for great video.

    • @herbertlong3981
      @herbertlong3981 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      most important would be the ratio of triglycerides (TG) to HDL get it down to 1.5 to 1. Even better, 1 to 1. High TG is caused by simple carbs -- sugar, flour etc

      Ratios are GARBAGE. Don't trust those numbers. My TG/HDL is always between .85 to 1.3 for >20 yrs yet all of hearts arteries are calcified. PURE GARBAGE. My LDL in the same period has been 170-185 mg/dL

    Hello Dr Cho. I have seen a talk of yours on a TH-cam video “Approaches to Lowering LDL-C. What is new in 2021 for Statin Intolerant Patient?”. In it you state that there is great data that it is really important for patients who have had a heart attack or a bypass operation to get their LDL-C below 70, and 80 is too high. I would be interested to examine this data. I had a bypass operation 13 years ago and my typical LDL-C level is 155. It is many years since I had any angina, so your statement is a little odd. But I would be interested to examine the data to which you refer.

Statin works only because it has anti inflammatory property but there are other method with no side effect and natural

    How can you get a high quality of life if you are struggling to pay my rent? I ate 2 times a day , I don't smoke nor drink alcohol, avoiding meat and processed food, I exercised and my Cholesterol is 205 . My aunts and uncles on their 90's and my brothers and sister on their 60's and 70' theirs. My Doctor had me took a Statin I have cramps and pain in my legs so I stop. My cholesterol sure high from stress because I have high anxiety paying bills and drug dealer neighbors. My doctor want me to go to her office every 3 months for blood work. I hate getting blood work every 3 months and every time I go to doctors office they swab your nose for Covid which causes me discomfort. Make my anxiety even worst. I have my doubts seeing my doctor every 3 months.. But great information though thanks a lot for this video.

    Telling people to minimize eggs (especially egg yolks) to reduce cholesterol is 'old advice' but there is zero experimental evidence that dietary cholesterol affects cholesterol levels in blood. Reducing red meat in your diet might be good advice for 'other than cholesterol' issues for the same reason. Furthermore - 'heart doctors' only care about the impact of cholesterol on the cardiovascular system and will say that the best level is the lowest you can get it - but - from a 'whole body health' standpoint, the least risk for deaths from 'all sources' is closer to 200 than it is to 100, in fact, studies have shown that a cholesterol level of below 130 has over a 50% increase in deaths than levels between 180 and 220.

    About the "benefits" of Metamucil. I beg to differ from personal experience, as well as from relatives using it too. It is usually flavored - awful soupy substance to swallow - ground way too fine and can even be constipating. I have been using much better psyllium products with great results, for many years (I am now 77). They offer a much more coarse grind, unflavored. For example, NOW brands offers one of them (available at Trader Joe's and Vitacost) and the another one is from Yerba Prima.

I believe everything changes with every science study. 🙆‍♂️ I like egg yokes too as there good for eyes with lutein & zeaxanthin known to improve or prevent macular disease leading cause of blindness. Contribute to cognitive function, reduce cancer & cardiovascular disease risk for now if you follow the science a term I dislike!

      Wrong. LDL is bad. HDL is good. I used to have very high HDL. Now, I have high overall cholesterol. It’s age and diet even though I eat healthy foods, I e slipped and have been eating potato chips. Now I have to be super strict again. I already run a lot (marathon runner). In my late 30s now. Thought it was too soon for me to deal with this. I have low blood pressure and low weight.

      @@JDMimeTHEFIRST LDL is required by the body. It becomes problematic when it is modified by glucose, or refined carbs.
      Another reason are the so-called heart-healthy vegetable oils, poly unsaturated fats. These are actually highly processed, refined seed oils. Pressed, extracted with eg. hexane, treated with concentrated caustic soda, treated at high temperatures, deodorized. They are extremely sensitive to oxygen and become rancid (and toxic).
      The original LDL is, just like HDL, a transporter for fatty substances and vitamins in the body. Once modified by glucose and oxidized materials they are not recognized for reuptake by the liver.
