ALRIGHT! YAY!!!! 6 months on this diet and my cholesterol is down ONE HUNDRED POINTS!!! If that doesn't get someone's attention, I don't know what will!!!!! Thank you, Dr. Esselstyn for teaching me the smart way to go! =D
Well, I've been on this diet for over a year, minus cheating with oils and had cheese about 5 times and one teen burger. Results, which may be psychosomatic are: dropped 40 lbs in 6 weeks and kept 30 of it off for a year. Sleep apnea is gone. Breathing is clear for the first time in my life. Bp has dropped 20 points. All stomach/intestinal issues disappeared in 3 days. Stronger muscles with more endurance. I require less sleep (7 hours) now. I was hoping to avoid meat and dairy for a year...now I can't see myself going back...I feel twenty years younger. Oh and a lot of my aches and pains have gone away too, including chest pain. I am currently 50 years old.

Love a dr. that understands the body God has given us if treated right can heal itself. Most dr.'s are afraid to say this for fear of losing their license, but when you are more concerned with saving lives i promise nothing else matter. God bless him and his family.
This changed my life. Even though I was already plant based, I added the greens to our diet twice a day and continue to see improvements in every area of health several months later. It is nothing short of amazing. THANK YOU Dr. Esselstyn for preaching and preaching and preaching. You do make a difference in the world.
This is an excellent talk from Dr. Esseslstyn. For anyone that is curious about the link between heart disease and diet, take 15-minutes and watch this video.
Having lots of heart disease in the family, watching a talk by Esselstyn was a powerful turning point in my life. What a relief to realize that this disease was not an inevitability but that I had the power to keep my heart healthy by changing my diet! This man + Dean Ornish should get the Nobel price in medicine.
Come St. Patrick's Day this year and I'm 3 years WFPB (whole food plant based, modified slightly) and LOVE IT. Lighter and healthier and less aches and pains and no more regular consumptionn of OTC drugs (and no Rx drugs either). I'm 51. WISH I'd started sooner, but you're never too old to start the healing. Make the leap.
I had a heart attack, a few years back and then a quadruple bypass. All before 32yrs of age. Although I'm on a sort of veggie diet, as I still eat fish. As the information I got was it would help me as they have Omega3 in them. But I'm convinced by this talk to go strictly plant-based. Hopefully this will improve my health even more. THXS, DOC.
+Jonjo Senna That amazing man, can get more than enough omegas from a tablespoon of flax seeds everyday. For me once I've added in all the leafy greens I eat I max out at 300% of omega 3s everyday without a single animal product. Good luck to you, hope you will be an inspiration to people in your life :)
I'm trying to get the word out, you have an advantage unfortunately due to your circumstance. Sad fact that most people only listen to those who have gone through the traumatic event. My family members say 'well you have to die of something', then in a few years they will be forking over their life savings for a few more years. Upsetting but this is the consequence of trying to educate yourself to the best lifestyle. Can't even shift them on the environmental and ethical issues either :(
+Luke Barnes 100% agree with you, Most people have this it'll never happen to me attitude. Until it does happen. That goes for environmental and political issues as well. But theirs more and more people-like yourself- educating and spreading this life saving message. Because of this; I have hope for the future.
Thank you, and you have a lot of faith, as I try to. But it is ultimately people like you who will change the world. Congrats again for making this effort and I wish you the best of luck in curing your atherosclerosis :)
A way to reverse CAD? That study changed my life. I was a small town farm boy from Indiana. I moved to Denver and helped people adopt a WFPB SOS flour free diet/lifestyle and then moved to Silicon Valley and once again helped people adopt a WFPB SOS flour free diet/lifestyle. All who have adopted this diet/lifestyle thrive! 🌱🤙❤️ rock on!
I have been plant based for about 30 days. My gut is almost gone, my suits are too big, my energy is thru the roof, and my libido is as high as it’s ever been… idk if it just a mental thing but damn I feel good!!! 🥦🥬🍠🍅🍆🍆🍆😂
What I'd give to know the mindset of those who down-vote this video. How come those who down-vote don't say why or give and an explanation? This man will go down in history, and we're lucky to have video evidence of his very clear, concise reasoning on why a plant diet is the best for humans.
So powerful and clear in his explanation of how and why a heart attack may occur...and, more importantly, how everyone of us can prevent ever having such an attack in the first place! This may be the most important video you ever watch.
What Dr Esselstyn is talking about isn't a diet per se. It's a lifestyle. It works. Bravo Dr Esselstyn for your focus on the cause, not just the symptoms.
Weird to hear the audience laugh at anything with a mother, shows how desensitized the general population is to factory farming, this man is going to save my mothers life and the mothers and children of many innocent animals
The "innocent animals" will cease to exist other than feral chickens, etc because mankind won't raise them for their eggs and/or meat which may be good in the sense that all those sheep, pigs, cows and what-not that no longer exist will reduce the greenhouse gasses produced by their flatulence.
I’ve embraced this wholeheartedly and have seen great results. I only wish my family doctor would have recommended a diet change instead of medication 20 years ago and I might have avoided having a heart attack.
Why is Dr.Esslstyn not awarded the Nobel Price for Health & Wellbeing (if there is one!)? This guy has done more for humanity (Heart Health) than all the American conventional cardiologists combined.
+Boyer Coe Partially wrong. Live expectancy and diet have a linear corralation. You increase your live expectancy and general health by getting rid of animal products. Smoking and drinking result in specific diseases. Drinking is a part of someones diet, if that person has a health risk from it. Smoking: Most prominently lung cancer and increased body acidity (really bad, because inflamation risk increases). Extreme and consistant drinking: Heart: Cardiomyopathy - Stretching and drooping of heart muscle Arrhythmias - Irregular heart beat, Stroke, High blood pressure. Research also shows that drinking moderate amounts of alcohol may protect healthy adults from developing coronary heart disease. Liver: Variety of problems and liver inflammations including: Steatosis, or fatty liver Alcoholic hepatitis Fibrosis Cirrhosis Pancreas: Alcohol causes the pancreas to produce toxic substances that can eventually lead to pancreatitis, a dangerous inflammation and swelling of the blood vessels in the pancreas that prevents proper digestion. Cancer: Drinking too much alcohol can increase your risk of developing certain cancers, including cancers of the: Mouth Esophagus Throat Liver Breast. Conclusion: What i want to say is that your mother isnt "healthy", because she doesnt drink and smoke. It most definetly has something to do with her diet choices, so you were right with the drinking part, but she is this healthy, because she either has really good genes and/or she is on top of her diet/has an andequate diet.
and he probably was taking a bunch of pills for illnesses that you don't know about...just because someone makes it to a certain age but are meat-eaters, doesn't mean they're extremely healthy....the data is there in front of our eyes...it's just a matter if we want to change or not....I'm a meat-eater, and I am researching and learning so I can transition to veganism....with such concrete data and analysis at my finger tips, i'd be remiss to ignore it.....but if you don't care about your health and want to be lazy (which many of us meat-eaters are) then we'll come up with excuses etc.
Genetics in all the studies of ethnicity do not play the same role as dietary environmental intake. Look up work done by C. Sirotri on Japanese migrants, or the China Study by T. Colin Campbell, Or Dr. Ornish.
Joe D that's a presumption on your behalf. I don't work in the dairy or meat industry, in my opinion grass fed meat from natural farms using natural fertilizer is healthy food, the same goes for butter some cheeses and wild fish and naturally grown vegetables, especially leafy greens. The biggest problem in the built up world today is the big corporate entities pushing their overly processed products onto the shelves of the supermarkets which covers all elements of food. if you go into a grocery or supermarket today to buy healthy food, you will be hard pushed to find anything that resembles genuine good food. So this battle between veganism and carnivore etc is irrelevant when both are being sold in both the good and bad forms of themselves. Whats more important is to educate ourselves about the good and bad version of our foods, and buy from the genuine producer and not the pusher of bad food and bad health, and stop blaming each other. Eat good whole foods, avoid synthetic or chemical processing etc. This is the formula for good health, also eat less often, only when you are genuinely hungry and eat less at a sitting. like i said this is my opinion, but it comes from years of research both at a science and practical level, but i am not a Scientist or a Doctor by profession.I am just an ordinary person with an ordinary job, that educated himself about health and well - being. I Also believe the biggest killer in today's world is not heart disease, but high stress levels from the corporate sector push for profits. This has come about from a well oiled Advertising machine which will not refuse money, and the bigger the funding the better. And last but not least, the lack of connection now among people all over the built up world is a major cause of illness especially emotionally, caused by the massive surge in the digital corporate world, which of course lines their pockets, and of course also the pockets of the psychiatric and medical industries. So, their are many corporate interests out there, you already mentioned two,. you see at that level of industry, health and well - being are not part of the plan. No, the industry must grow and expand and make money and become a powerful entity in the corporate ladder.
@@spirgtudsrubec7776 Some folks can eat paleo type diet, perhaps, and live long, but most will only thrive living on a whole food, plant based, SOS-free diet. Definitely to reconsider how we eat. I will be doing further investigation on the same. I am concerned about the adequacy of protein, bio-availability of iron, employing such a diet in special groups eg young children, elderly etc. Definitely interested... to make this a lifestyle change and not just a fad.
Mystee Prince also check out nutritionfacts dot org for scientific based info provided by a Dr Greger, he reviews peer-reviewed research papers on vegan diet and related subjects. If you're worried that you won't get enough nutrients try to track your food with some apps like cronometer (free!) and see how you're doing regarding protein, iron etc. I always have my iron even over recommended amounts, same with protein. Recommended amount of protein for females is between 40-50g/day so we really don't need that much, and to much is harmful for health
+Mystee Prince We get so much protein from every food. Protein is the one nutrient people are concerned about in the western world but should not be. Ever heard of kwashiorokor? That is the scientific name for protein deficiency but no one even knows it.
+Mystee Prince how are you doing? Did you started in a Plant Based Diet? If yes, How are you feeling? How was your investigation... What was the importance of Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn's TED Talk to your decision to change your diet? Were any other type of youtube content helpful to you change your diet, if you have changed it? Wish you well Mystee
Going to give this a go. A while back I started trying to hit the plant based diet but lost focus. It did make me feel better though while doing it so after seeing this I'm going straight back on it. Don't know if anyone has noticed but I also observed while having a plant based diet that my bank ballance got better? Probably why the conventional GP might not be plugging this. Not so much money to go round for them when people are healthy as we get to keep our hard earned cash. Really appreciate this video.

Go follow his daughter Jane Esselstyn and his wife Ann on Their You Tube channel! They cook plant based recipes and are sooooo funny!!! He makes guest appearances occasionally!
Hehe he always makes the Toothless Tiger comment :P Anyway, this guy is a hero. Him and Campbell and Greger. Whole foods, plant-based is the way to go!
True in part for a person at a later age with ample reserves but young kids eliminating all forms of animal sources and pigging out on sugar and flours is very bad medicine.
His system is wonderful, 7 years on it now, age 77, no meds, no symptoms, cholesterol 147, down from 270, lots of energy, and even my doctor is with me on it. My blood protein levels went up from 10/100 to 50/100, a five times greater level, after switching to all whole plant food diet with no oil. I believe that's because the plant diet provides enough high quality carbs so that the body stops breaking down protein to steal the carbs it needs. It leaves me with far more available protein, so my workout recoveries are very swift. Even my doctor had no idea about this phenomenon. It's because doctors don't study nutrition, or they would know that protein is just a carb with nitrogen tacked on. It's very easily split. So on a high meat diet, your 20 dollar steak is ripped down into 20 cents worth of pasta plus some nitrogen. You're being cheated horribly by the meat industry, in other words, same with dairy. You don't need them and will do far better without them. Keep your money, eat whole plants. Every single bean, lentil, or grain is a whole complete plant, and we thrive on them, as countless civilizations since the beginning of recorded time, as well as stay free from the tragedy of what we have been mistakenly blaming on age. Age on this diet is simply beautiful.
My Kaiser Doctor turned me onto Esselstyn and Dean Ornish as having the answers to reversing heart disease and i found Esselstyn's ideas to be outstanding and of real value. I pass this information onto my stubborn brother but There an old saying, "You can lead a horse to water (but you can't make him/it drink). My youtube parrot videos get more interest than these lectures but know that Dr. Esselstyn is not about "fake news". He is the real deal on reversing heart disease and preventing heart disease.
My dad is in 18 pills a day and everyone around me is skeptical about plant based, they think Im on an argument of saving the animals, when all Im trying to do is save my dad.
Sadly, I am now convinced our medical system is now being subsidized by the pharmaceutical industry based on what tests they are recommending and what tests they should be giving such as AC1 tests for diabetes as 1 of 3 people now have at least prediabetes but they wait to treat that with drugs when it gets really bad. Our medical industry makes money off of keeping people sick.
Bless humanistic plant-based doctors. "We cannot segregate the human heart from the environment outside us and say that once one of these is reformed everything will be improved. Man is organic with the world. His inner life molds the environment and is itself deeply affected by it." ~ Baha'i Faith

made the change 3week ago and i lowered my hypertension pills by more than half coversyl, monocor and norvasc :) lost 15pounds too !!! FORK OVER KNIFE + WHAT THE HEALTH changed my life !!!!!!!!!!
@Haseeb2 The trouble is single variable approach to nutrition. 1) Investigate variables related to health, 2) identify omega3 as very important to health, 3) identify fatty cold water fish have the highest omega3 levels of all foods, 4) conclusion: eating fatty cold water fish promotes good health. But fish aren't just made of omega3. Animal protein has been shown to have a negative effect on overall health (re China Study). Also there is the saturated fat. And then there's the mercury.
I feel the best when I am on a carnivore diet. 90% of my diet is meat, the rest is dairy products. No processed food, very little plant and fruit. I exercise, drink bone broth and wheatgrass juice, eat raw cacao, consume high amounts of vitamin C, ginger tea and a few other things. My heart and cardiovascular system is in textbook perfect condition. When I switched to plant based diet, I started experiencing all sorts of bad things, weight gain, brain fog, sleeping more, fatigue, etc. We are not the same.

HELP NEEDED: I have been following Dr esselstyn diet for over two years, hitting LDL of 43mg/dl, total cholesterol 85mg/dl. But my lipoprotein A is much higher than recommended level. This got me really worried as there is a direct correlation between Cardiovascular disease and Lipoprotein A, what do I do? How comes the plant based diet not having any affect on lipoprotein A?
LP(a) is almost entirely hereditary - you'll still benefit from making these changes in fact, it's more important for high LP(a) individuals to pay attention to this message.
At 8:50 he says inflammation starts but doesn't pin point what exactly started the inflammation ! Then he mentions bad cholesterol without saying what caused the cholesterol to turn bad ! Cholesterol (mostly 85%, I believe) is made by the body for healthy reasons. It is good cholesterol when made. What turns it bad and what starts the inflammation to begin with. Hint: it is associated & consumed with the foods he mentions & it's not fat. You don't have to be a genius to see what low fat diets have done to America's health as we are ranked one of the worst. Another hint, look in the shopping carts of your neighbors at the check out.
+Dave Yttri I did not say you can not, in fact you can get heart healthy on plant based diet. But few people can do that. They are the ones with gray hair before 50. Look around most people can not. I'm getting healthier with high (good) fat diet. No sugar or high carbs (0 to
Yes he did. The LDL that has stuck to the walls of the arteries makes it's way into and migrates into the sub strait of the endothelial cells. That migration is the what starts the inflammation.
It's not the fact that he has a degree - it's the fact that he has done with diet what was previously thought of as impossible by medicine, and that is to reverse heart disease. He has helped thousands of people to get better, anbd given tousands more hope. I'd say that's reason enough to listen to what he's got to say.
I go for a blood test this coming week, and I'll be very interested to see what my cholesterol levels are now, as opposed to what they were prior to starting this type of diet. I have a feeling it will be very good!
"Consumption of saturated fat impairs the anti-inflammatory properties of high-density lipoproteins and endothelial function." "Consumption of a saturated fat reduces the anti-inflammatory potential of HDL and impairs arterial endothelial function. In contrast, the anti-inflammatory activity of HDL improves after consumption of polyunsaturated fat. These findings highlight novel mechanisms by which different dietary fatty acids may influence key atherogenic processes."
baking potatoes and veggies w/o oil also works. Even frying with water is possible (although it won't get crispy). My go-to is stews now. Soups and stews!
i put my dad on your diet from your cookbook! Highly recommend it for anyone who's looking to avoid stent surgeries etc and want to take control of their life for good
Don't just stop at rice. There are sooo many grain choices out there: farro, amaranth, barley, millet, teff, buckwheat, spelt, bulgur, sorghum, wheatberry. Try them all !!!!! They each have their own nutrition to add for a healthy body and brain.

About two years ago I experienced a couple of bouts of PAT: Paroxysmal Atrial Tachycardia while lying in bed. I didn't need to go to the doctor or have an ECG (EKG). I knew what it was. Then I remembered my time as a nurse in CCU and two things came to mind (1) the heart is a muscle (2) the heart is a pump. So I just increased my cardio exercise to include swimming laps in a pool. The long walks/yoga were not enough. Also discovered plant-based diet via Dr Joel Fuhrman. Well, no more PAT. Stay well away from doctors - and statins. On no meds at all. BP has dropped to 120/70 as a bonus. Have never felt as healthy. (71 year old female). Folks, this stuff works. Don't go near statins. Just figure out what your body needs to heal, then do that.
My cholesterol is 131. And that includes my being on a “vegan” diet which included potato chips and french fries. No good! So now I’m on a whole food plant based diet which excludes oil! I'm very happy you got great results. But if you added meats and seafood into your diet, you'd experience even better health benefits. The main reason Dr. E's diet works so well for people is because people who adopt his diet quit eating all the junk foods and fake foods they were eating before - not because of the health benefits of vegetables. Vegetables are of course beneficial. But so is meat and seafood.

Love a dr. that understands the body God has given us if treated right can heal itself. Most dr.'s are afraid to say this for fear of losing their license, but when you are more concerned with saving lives i promise nothing else matter. God bless him and his family.
One of the best doctors that will ever live ... PERIOD. 💯💯💯
YES!
Great doctor and very caring human being !
+Luke Barnes
Thanks for the advice, and encouragement. Will try to get as many family and friends to do the same.
Good luck to u too, bro.
Can't even shift them on the environmental and ethical issues either :(
+Luke Barnes
100% agree with you,
Most people have this it'll never happen to me attitude.
Dr Esselstyn is so badass...love this talk!!

I have been plant based for about 30 days. My gut is almost gone, my suits are too big, my energy is thru the roof, and my libido is as high as it’s ever been… idk if it just a mental thing but damn I feel good!!! 🥦🥬🍠🍅🍆🍆🍆😂
hello its 4 weeks since my heart attack & 2 stents did you follow a specific diet ? glad you are doing well
What I'd give to know the mindset of those who down-vote this video. How come those who down-vote don't say why or give and an explanation? This man will go down in history, and we're lucky to have video evidence of his very clear, concise reasoning on why a plant diet is the best for humans.
What a great man, I admire him very much. I went vegan 4 years ago and I could never turn back.
The majority of doctors are scared of this type of doctor because he is actually curing rather than prolonging.
Thank you, Dr. Esselstyn! You are inspiring and give lifesaving advice to all who will listen. You are awesome!
It works. Bravo Dr Esselstyn for your focus on the cause, not just the symptoms.
i have great respect for this doctor he makes his case with before and after results i like him
Weird to hear the audience laugh at anything with a mother, shows how desensitized the general population is to factory farming, this man is going to save my mothers life and the mothers and children of many innocent animals
animals are so good in ma belly
i can feel the nutrition mmmmmm
Oh Vey
@James Parker healthy plant based diet xD what an oxymoron
The "innocent animals" will cease to exist other than feral chickens, etc because mankind won't raise them for their eggs and/or meat which may be good in the sense that all those sheep, pigs, cows and what-not that no longer exist will reduce the greenhouse gasses produced by their flatulence.
I’ve embraced this wholeheartedly and have seen great results. I only wish my family doctor would have recommended a diet change instead of medication 20 years ago and I might have avoided having a heart attack.
Absolute legend and inspiration for myself, family & my channel, keep them coming Dr.!
Why is Dr.Esslstyn not awarded the Nobel Price for Health & Wellbeing (if there is one!)? This guy has done more for humanity (Heart Health) than all the American conventional cardiologists combined.
AMEN!!
Would be interesting to hear his view on the correlation between cardiovascular disease and the promotion of processed seed/vegetable oils.
No SOS salt oils or sugar
Dr. Esselstyn advocates not one drop of oil.
Wish the whole Nation could follow his teaching it would benefit every one
This guy is 82. Most people are have a cane at this point. No Oil!!

Partially wrong. Live expectancy and diet have a linear corralation. You increase your live expectancy and general health by getting rid of animal products. Smoking and drinking result in specific diseases. Drinking is a part of someones diet, if that person has a health risk from it.
Smoking:
Most prominently lung cancer and increased body acidity (really bad, because inflamation risk increases).
Extreme and consistant drinking:
Heart: Cardiomyopathy - Stretching and drooping of heart muscle Arrhythmias - Irregular heart beat, Stroke, High blood pressure.
Conclusion:
What i want to say is that your mother isnt "healthy", because she doesnt drink and smoke. It most definetly has something to do with her diet choices, so you were right with the drinking part, but she is this healthy, because she either has really good genes and/or she is on top of her diet/has an andequate diet.
Yes, this may be true, but you cant take single excamples and generalize it, because each person is different in terms of genetics.
***** And he might have made it to 100 if he didn't.
and he probably was taking a bunch of pills for illnesses that you don't know about...just because someone makes it to a certain age but are meat-eaters, doesn't mean they're extremely healthy....the data is there in front of our eyes...it's just a matter if we want to change or not....I'm a meat-eater, and I am researching and learning so I can transition to veganism....with such concrete data and analysis at my finger tips, i'd be remiss to ignore it.....but if you don't care about your health and want to be lazy (which many of us meat-eaters are) then we'll come up with excuses etc.
Genetics in all the studies of ethnicity do not play the same role as dietary environmental intake. Look up work done by C. Sirotri on Japanese migrants, or the China Study by T. Colin Campbell, Or Dr. Ornish.
45 people in the meat or dairy industry disliked this video. This man should win a Nobel prize.
Joe D people who disliked this likely actually have a decent understanding into nutrition. This man should win nothing for his misinformation.
markas maclean So the fact that his patients were actually healed means....????
Nanie Lima if you go on any type of elimination diet where you cut out bs manufactured processed food you get healthier.
I am so thankful to Dr. E. and all the great WFPB doctors and other folks like Chef AJ, etc. who have made my journey an easy, joyful one.

Mystee Prince spinach is high in iron. Beans are high in protein. :)

VERY WELL EXPLAINED!

I’ve never seen or heard this man before, I think I’m in love.
Go follow his daughter Jane Esselstyn and his wife Ann on Their You Tube channel! They cook plant based recipes and are sooooo funny!!! He makes guest appearances occasionally!
This man changed my life forever!
One of the best doctors in the universe. Following the footsteps of Hippocrates.
The cut out of processed foods and refined sugar helps way more than anything 😁
Yeah it's like winning half the game already

Mind boggling results.

What an impressive lecture on whole plant food and optimal bloddflow and Health - and I loved the explanation of the endothelium and nitrit oxyde 🙏🍀💚😀

HELP NEEDED:
I have been following Dr esselstyn diet for over two years, hitting LDL of 43mg/dl, total cholesterol 85mg/dl.
Any diet that is real food, not processed food (including seed oils) and void of sugar will improve your health. Pick what feels right for you.

If I had known this 10 years ago I would never had a stroke. This came out when I should have made veggies my main diet.
I go for a blood test this coming week, and I'll be very interested to see what my cholesterol levels are now, as opposed to what they were prior to starting this type of diet. I have a feeling it will be very good!

Why are there millions of people who consume oilve oil without the slightest trace of Heart Disease or Diabetes?
"Consumption of saturated fat impairs the anti-inflammatory properties of high-density lipoproteins and endothelial function."
"Consumption of a saturated fat reduces the anti-inflammatory potential of HDL and impairs arterial endothelial function. In contrast, the anti-inflammatory activity of HDL improves after consumption of polyunsaturated fat. These findings highlight novel mechanisms by which different dietary fatty acids may influence key atherogenic processes."
Very Good News...But what about Salmon, Nonfat plain Greek Yogurt and Walnuts, Almonds, and Pistachios ???
very simple without oil. steam them for a start or pressure cook them
baking potatoes and veggies w/o oil also works. Even frying with water is possible (although it won't get crispy). My go-to is stews now. Soups and stews!
Or roast them
Air fryers make them crispy with no oil. No reason at all to use oil ever again if you get an air fryer.
i put my dad on your diet from your cookbook! Highly recommend it for anyone who's looking to avoid stent surgeries etc and want to take control of their life for good
congrats! keep at it and you will be glad you did!!
