Godzilla did have his own surf music! Godzilla vs the Sea Monster had the underwater fight music, and the dance contest scene from the beginning of the film.
Fun fact: in Red Dwarf, series 4 episode 6, titled: Meltdown they show a brief 3 second clip from this movie for no explained reason when Kryten and Rimmer arrive on a waxwork droid plant
They briefly explain it. When Kryten and Rimmer are at the resistance base Kryten checks a map and notes they landed in the 'Prehistoric world' section of Waxworld. I guess the Hitler/Capone/Rasputin/James Last villain waxdroid army didn't want to try and take on Kaiju.
"You should never harm a giant monster's child" Well that's just good advice in general. It's never a good idea to harm the child of something that can step on you.
"Hey, what's that monster movie about the creature found on a remote island?" "King Kong?" "No, the parents are looking for their baby" "Gorgo?" "No, they can fly" "Rodan?" "No, they have blue heat breath" "Godzilla?" 🤨
Little does Brandon know that Toho are trying to get the rights to him. Also hands up if like me you first saw Gappa in the Red Dwarf episode Meltdown, were they cameoed as rampant anamatronics in the prehistoric section of Waxworld.
Thanks for making me look up "cloaca". I'm now one word smarter. EDIT: I forgot to point out that the scene where momma Gappa shows up in the city with an octopus in her mouth was supposed to be a joke. Apparently it was "Japanese" humor. She was bringing food for her kid...pretty funny, huh?
Gives a good sense of scale. Rest of the movie goes on to teach the valuable lesson that you should never get in a fight with anything that's so big you can't poke it in both eyes at once with one hand.
I remember reading about a controversy in this movie about a place in the movie that was on a hill and people thought it meant Negro Hill. Instead of what it ment in Japanese.
I think the controversy was about the Japanese dun saying something about the monster attacking a district wich had been originally poorly translated into something racist
Originally gappa was intended to be a parody of monster movies at least from what I’ve heard when it translated into English everyone decided to make it a serious monster movie again at least from what I heard
14:02 I love figuring out which famous landmarks are being destroyed in these clips of Japanese movies. This attack takes place in Atami, which was a booming resort city at the time. So that's probably Atami Castle, which is a kinda tacky, fake "historic" castle built in the 1950s. So imagine the monsters attacking Las Vegas and going ham on the sphinx at the Luxor Hotel, and that's roughly what's happening here.
There's a great bit in Warren Ellis' novel Crooked Little Vein where the protagonist goes to an underground kaiju porn movie. They even have kaiju gloves.
SMEG! I recognized some of the monster footage from an Episode of RED DWARF (Meltdown) where Kryton and Rimmer are chased by unconvincing dinosaurs...I always wondered what movie they took those clips from and now I know thanks Brandon
Pretty sure they sneaked a few scenes from this into the Red Dwarf episode 'Waxworld'. Always wanted to find out what movie the creatures that chase the Dwarfers was from.
You might also be familiar with this movie if you're a Red Dwarf fan: The fourth series episode "Meltdown" used footage from this movie to depict fake dinosaurs in a planet-wide wax robot theme park.
I think the little boy in Gappa was also same kid actor in King Kong vs Godzilla. Honestly I would’ve liked to see Gappa vs Yongary, Gappa vs Guilala (X From Outer Space), Gappa vs Gamera, and Gappa vs Ultraman.
I had a feeling when the noise attack plan was gonna happen we were either gonna hear Dragon Sound or John Michael Thor and I'm glad I was right cause it is always hilarious

Whilst Nikkatsu did only make one monster movie, "Gappa" did fairly well at the box office in 1967. Nikkatsu was in dire straights financially and that's why they turned to porn just after this before going bankrupt in the 70s. Godzilla may be more well known, but Toho just wasn't doing as hot at this time. "Son of Godzilla" was the least successful monster film of 1967 (the year every Japanese studio released at least one monster movie). That is not to say "Son of..." bombed, it just didn't make as much money as the other films (and Toho's "King Kong Escapes" that same year did barely better). But yeah, the big money-makers that year were "Gamera vs. Gaos", "The X From Outer Space", and "Gappa." From here until 1970, Gamera would proceed to whip Toho's ass at the box office. While I'm not exactly sure I believe them, it is worth mentioning the two writers of "Gappa" claimed they never saw "Gorgo," when interviewed for "Monsters Are Invading Tokyo."
Yes and I really want Legendary and Wanna Brothers add Gappa in the Monsterverse in the Future because of this I believe the The Hellhawks in GVK I been wonder if the Hellhawks can evolve in the bigger ones if so that means it can evolve into Kaijus aka Titans, so my thinking is The Hellhawks can evolve into Gappa and His Species so yes Gappa can work in Future Monsterverse Films and he can be Godzilla's Ally aka Friend and other Titans from Hollow Earth. It will be Titanus Gappa the Prehistoric Avian Reptilian Titan from Hollow Earth and I know the fact that Gappa's Species live somewhere in Hollow Earth.
That Gappa casually knocking over the building after staring at it was HILARIOUS. Reminds me of my cat when he’s hungry and I’m fucking around instead of feeding him.
This is the one Kaiju flick I’ve heard of but never saw. The plastic animals in the Playmate Land model were very popular. I had the exact same toys as a kid. What was it with Kaiju theme parks?
Your videos always crack me up! When they were setting up the speakers I wondering what sound clip you would play. I was half expecting that "Against the Ninja" song lol!
My first experience of Gappa was an episode of Red Dwarf where the crew are teleported to a planet of robot wax figures. The explanation is the monsters are from a fictional creatures area and there is a comment on how fake they look.
Toei also had 1966's The Magic Serpent, though like the Damaijin trilogy by Daiei, it was more focused on the people in a more Ancient Japan like setting
I actually read that the writers of Gappa have claimed to have never seen Gorgo. In any case, its worth noting that the American release of Gappa (which never aired in theaters here, and instead went straight to TV) has about six extra minutes of monster footage. A shame that this version hasn't been remastered in HD like the Japanese cut has.
I find that hard to believe since Japan is where Gorgo premiered. The biggest problem with this movie is there’s hardly anything original in it. Things in it have been done much better in other monster movies. Also fun fact: Akira Watanabe who worked as an art director on the Godzilla movies did the special effects for this movie.
This transfer looks really nice. This one has popped on so many public domain DVDs (with a plethora of alternate titles) that it is refreshing to see a restored copy of it for once.
Im so accustomed to see this movie in absolutely deplorable condition I was shocked to see it properly remastered. This is one of the most abused giant monster movies i have seen (condition wise) on the airways.
Hey Brandon! Always good to see kaiju films getting some love (or ridicule). Here's a fun fact: Akira Watanabe, SPFX Director for this film, was part of TOHO's SPFX team for the original Godzilla (GOJIRA) and King Kong vs. Godzilla before securing his own gig with the indie company that produced GAPPA.
Imagine if TH-cam was a platform where people were free to post videos as they wanted, and the viewers decided what was appropriate for themselves. That would be weird.
Fun fact: did you know that one of the tank props in this movie was given to Tsuburaya and was modified into the Kaiju Dino-Tank for there show Ultraseven
I've actually owned a copy of Gappa since I was a child cause my mom got it for me thinking it was a Godzilla movie. I always wished there was a sequel or remake for this, same with Gorgo
We had this on film in the late 70's as Monster From A Prehistoric Planet. My dad would get the projector out and we'd watch it with Destroy all Monsters. Thanks for the memories. :}
Wow, I actually suggested this in the comments of the “Repo Men” video. I doubt that’s why Brandon chose it, but it’s still cool to see. I rented this from Netflix back when they mailed DVDs to your house. I wouldn’t blame Brandon if he never did another Toho movie. It would be real frustrating to do all the work of making the video only to have it taken down.
Fun Fact: Nikkatsu is actually Japan's oldest film studio, having started back in 1912 during the silent era and therefore actually predating Toho and its mainstream imitators like Toei! 😲 In fact, its name is actually an amalgamation of three words literally translated in English to "Japan Motion Pictures." Putting aside its pinku eiga and Roman Porno films, it was also notable for featuring the work of famed Japanese New Wave directors Seijun Suzuki and Shohei Imamura and series like STRAY CAT ROCK starring the one and only Meiko Kaji of LADY SNOWBLOOD and FEMALE PRISONER SCORPION fame!!!
I've been wondering for years after seeing it, what the red eyed bird kaiju scenes were, as I used to see them a lot but never knew the origin until today.
With all the jokes of a two parents being furious that their kidnapped child was being used in a sex magazine and a theme park land based off a pervert, I was half expecting a "groomers" reference.
Oh God this move brings me memories. Here in Mexico is kind of difficult to get your hands on movies like these by legal ways... So back in the day I sailed the dark side of the web and got a collection of Japanese Kaiju movies, some of them were in English, like this one. My friends didn't really like them, but sometimes when we were nerding out for day, we'd put some of them in the background and let them play. One time, a girl friend of us decided to join us and this movie was playing when she arrived... When the scenes with the guy telling the girl to quit and become a housewife played, she lost her mind... Heck, she dragged us out of playing AOE and to watch the movie... She was terrified, amused and offended by the movie. Ultimately culminating in her laughing at how silly and crazy the movie was... Good times xD
