Probably one of the most clear cases of the "Decoy protagonist" tope with Kaiju. The film is called Rebirth of Mothra, and features Mothra, the queen of the monsters looking prettier than ever. Only for her to be killed and for her son to take over for the entire trilogy.
In the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy I always found it odd that Mothra fought two different versions of King Ghidorah. Ghidorah is Godzilla's nemesis and there are plenty of other monsters that could be Mothra's rival. Like Rodan since he is also a flying monster, Batra was cool, or Gigan since in Final Wars it was said they fought thousands of years ago, and maybe Megaguirus since he is also a flying bug with a cool design and they fought once in the comics.

No, this is not true at all. In the Showa films, there is only the one King Ghidorah. Ghidorah is not "weaker" in the 1972-set "Godzilla vs. Gigan." You are mistaking Toho's lack of effects crew to properly operate Ghidorah for an actual statement on his personality. In the stock footage, Ghidorah is still as wild and active as ever. Just because it's stock footage doesn't mean it doesn't happen in the context of the story. Additionally, King Ghidorah HAD to survive the fight with Zone Fighter (set in 1973) because he had to still be alive in the 1999-set "Destroy All Monsters." That is an actual decision Toho had to make during production of "Zone Fighter."
@@ConstantineFurman I know that it's not cannon, that's why I said headcannon, meaning a personal interpretation of a fictional setting. It is different from a theory in that I don't believe it might be true, just that it is a possible interpretation of the multiple series I quite like to imagine.
I guess this is just a different universe a giant radioactive lizard do not exist in this Mothra universe
