This Is Not the Flag of Nepal

  • The Flag of Nepal is in all likeliness the most-distorted national flag there is. Why is that so, what's up with its weird shape, and why are national flags rectangular in the first place?

When i was in 6th grade we did a country for the whole year. I picked Nepal. I regretted picked it when it came time to make the flag. I slaved away all week trying to get it perfect. When i was done with it i was so proud of how it came out. When we presented it in front of the whole school, i was the only one with Nepal and the only one with a different flag. Kids were so confused by it. A lot of them hated it but I had a few that thought it was cool. Now the dessert rice pudding i tried to make for the project, now that was terrible.

It would be harder than most think, IME, you can't just cut the fabric, as it would unravel at the cut, especially flapping about in the wind. You'd have to hem it over, meaning a complex printing so that the folded hem doesn't mess with the flag's design. Alternatively, if the flag is 100% synthetic, you could cut it with a hot knife that fuses the edges, but that would leave the edge rough and uneven. It would also be prone to cracking and let the flag start to fray anyhow. There's likely reason behind the laziness.

That ties in with what I suspect is the reason so many countries have a flag which, at least in an acceptable variant, is rectangular with a fairly ordinary aspect ratio: to allow multiple flags of equal size to be shown together. If a display has flags from multiple countries, all of which are g. 120cm by 90cm, then there can be no question about whether the flags are the same size. If, however, there were some flags that were 120cm by 90cm but some that were 100cm by 100cm, then some people might complain that the extra height of the square flag gave it too much visual prominence, but others might complain that the larger perimeter of the 120x90 flag made it more prominent. Making all flags have the same height and width avoids such arguments.

Idk about other countries but Nepalese Flag has a story
The Sun and The Moon represent that as long as there is sun and moon Nepal will still be there.
The crimson red is Nepal's national color, and it indicates the brave spirits of the Nepalese people.
The two triangles symbolize the Himalaya Mountains and represent the two major religions, Hinduism and Buddhism.
The blue border symbolizes the peace and harmony.
The moon symbolizes that the Nepalese are soothing and calm, while the sun symbolizes fierce resolve.

For the non nepalese people I will like to elaborate more of it design and colour. The crimson red is Nepal's national color, and it indicates the brave spirits of the Nepalese people. The two triangles symbolize the Himalaya Mountains and represent the two major religions, Hinduism and Buddhism. The red triangular flag has been a Hindu symbol of victory since the time of Ramayana and Mahabharata. And lastly The emblems represent the sun and moon. They signify the hope that Nepal will endure as long as the sun and the moon are shining. Hope this will help you on anything related nepal flag and if you are interested more in it feel free to comment.

I was always under the impression that flags were rectangular because before photographs, flags were sometimes described in order to communicate what the flag looks like to someone who has never seen the flag but needed to make one for a situation. One example being a really weird but funky version of the flag of the United States of America created for John Paul Jones in 1779. Not sure if that's even true though

Is that the one with red with and blue stripes?
As for everything else, flag design started as a sunset of heraldry which has had a system of how to describe a design for centuries now, because coat of arms can be extremely intricate and so a tradicion was established on how to describe them so as to be able to be designed by other heralds. However, flags, according to vexillologist, should be simple to the point a child should be able to draw it.
